Mimi, Maybe some bighearted Texas cavers have an RV they could bring to the TSA convention for Jim and you to use and they sleep in a tent. That would be nice of them. Hi Mimi, Cave Without A Name rents out sites with RV hookups in the campground. Not sure if that's an option for y'all but wanted to make sure you knew about it. You'd still have to bring your own RV and the campsite has a separate fee payable directly to Cave Without A Name ($32 a night I think, but you'd have to verify with the park), but wanted to throw it out there as something for you guys to think about. We'd love to see you and Jim out there if it's possible for him! Kris On Fri, Mar 4, 2022 at 1:08 PM Mimi Jasek wrote: > Hi Bill, > > What a lovely and generous offer! Sorry Bill, Went to help him and hit send button before done! I am sure he would love a copy of that map. If it is the cave I am thinking of, I have also been in it, but not on a camping trip. Rehab and PTO for me will determine next steps, but I will keep in touch. Re: [Texascavers] James Jasek Update
Dear Mimi. Thanks for the report on Jim’s status and broken hip. That’s tough. Wishing you both the best. Maybe I could come up from Georgetown sometime to visit y’all. I would like to help and don’t want to be waited on. Thanks William R. (Bill) Elliott Sent from my iPhone On Mar 2, 2022, at 2:47 AM, Mimi Jasek wrote: Hello Everyone, It has been a while. Jim is still hanging in, but weaker physically as I predicted. He will be 81 this year, and was doing great till @ Sunday night. His replaced left knee began to hurt severely when he would get up to go to bed. By Wednesday I had him using his walker in the house, but he was fine on Thursday when I went to work. I got home @ 6:38 and turned into the den after calling hello. He met me with “Hi, Mimi! I am so glad your home! I fell and think I broke my leg!” He was sitting in his recliner with left leg out in front straight out. He kept wanting me to get him up. ( It was a Thursday night when I came home and found him comatose from his stroke too. Not a fun pattern.) So 911 and hospital ER. Unfortunately doc there took Jim as weak, old guy who fell. Took scans and X-ray and finally came back and said nothing broken so we can’t admit him and will start wheels turning to get him into rehab. It will take a while. Another doc came on later and I really fussed about his knee - as far as I knew from Jim cause of fall! Another doc, my fussing, PT eval and fact that two men could not get him up got us admitted by noon Friday. Due to blood thinner, had to wait till Monday afternoon to aspirate knee. Fluid had blood but no pus. Evidently first thing they look for in replaced joints that suddenly start hurting is infection. So cultures started, but Tuesday morn brought ortho guy saying not enough evidence yet to go in and clean out knee. Scans did not show anything out of place with replacement. For some reason they took him back for another X-ray, and results confirmed why he could not move leg and fussed so when turned in bed. His left hip broken! Turned out ER doc DID NOT x-ray hip, just knee!!! Me and ortho guy not happy, he was apologetic, but let’s get this fixed. He is a trauma bone guy. If you can have a good broken hip, he said Jim did. Top of femur, below ball, and in a small window that can make all the difference. Arthroscopic surgery, 3 small incisions, couple of smaller rods and voila! @ 1:00 tomorrow, and this fix meant to be walked on right away. If all goes well, 2-3 more days in hospital the transfer to rehab. I am having deja vu of Bill Russell and Pete Strickland. Jim’s recovery from his stroke event different, and fall due to collapsed knee as far as we can tell by fall site at home. I asked doc if his hip could have been the problem all along, but he said no. We know Jim went down hard on knee, and could have hit hip on very solid side/leg of recliner on way down. We will never know. Stats for recovery not helpful on this, so any prayers or positive thoughts would be appreciated. Due to lingering issues from stroke and some other things, doc said if Jim makes his 6 month check up at his office, his chances for survival of more than a year go way up! So goal! A lot up to him though, and me. Lots of hard work ahead for both of us. I still have to work @ 30 hours a week too for normal financial stability. I have always told him I want minimum 50 years, and we are coming up on 47. His mom survived a broken hip and lived to be 103, but had not had a stroke. Hope you are as well as possible, staying safe, and going caving. Wish my post was on a happier note. Re: [Texascavers] James Jasek update 06/04/2020
Awesome Mike! Amy and I both had talks with him that had him sounding so good too! Reaching out is wonderful for him, but if he is tired or woken up for call, calls not so great ☹️ He might forget tomorrow that he talked to you too, as he did with a friend yesterday and today. But this is PROGRESS, and an expected part of the ups and downs of healing from the brain event he had. He amazes me - but then he always has ☺️❣️ Mimi Sent from my iPhone > On Jun 4, 2020, at 6:51 PM, Lindsey Adamoski > wrote: > > Hang in there Mimi! Your strength through this is amazing. Re: [Texascavers] James Jasek update 06/04/2020
I received a phone call today from some guy named Jim Jasek. What a surprise. He sounds good and and in fair spirits. We reminisced about cave trips we were on and other stuff. It was great to hear from Jim. Our phone call was unfortunately cut short because it was time for a therapy session. Mike Harris On Thu, Jun 4, 2020, 12:40 PM Mimi Jasek wrote: > > New update. Re: [Texascavers] James Jasek 05/26/20 Update
Mimi, I am so very sorry that you are going through this! I know you and Jim miss each other terribly. I bet the nurses were amazed at whatever cave stories Jim told them back in the hospital. If Jim is more aware and feeling better I'm sure he's more annoyed to be away from home than he was in the hospital, but tell him we are all rooting for his progress! I hope one day you can look back together and say, "remember the time?" and "wasn't that SO crazy!" about this whole situation. I'm so glad he's in a nice facility and that they're communicating with you and asking thoughtful questions about his baseline. Please keep us updated. Mimi, We’re all pulling for Jim and you. Sounds like you made the right (but difficult) decision. Hang in there, it will get better. Geary Schindel From: Texascavers On Behalf Of Michael Harris Sent: Friday, May 22, 2020 10:14 PM To: texascavers@texascavers.com Subject: Re: [Texascavers] James Jasek new update 5/22/20 External Email Mimi, You had a tough decision to make but ultimately it comes down to the best care for Jim and his recovery. I feel that most of these facilities have a handle on the COVID-19 situation so Jim should be in good hands. I'm sure you will be able to visit by phone. Hopefully the desire to go home will increase his drive for a speedier recovery. Let us know of you need anything. Keep the faith and keep us posted. He and case manager spent all day doing that, for they could not get the PT and stroke/brain/memory help they feel he needs through home health etc here without it costing me an arm and a leg. So, after two management meetings and a negative COVID test, I got a call from the center his doc really wanted him to go to that he was accepted - but law won’t allow me to go. No visitation either. She will be 103 in August, but is now in a unit where she gets the extra physical help she needs. Due to virus, though, they will not be allowed to see one another. I also know the director of admissions from seeing her around when visiting Jim’s mom, and from my work. She is a member of the credit union and member/ friend of my boss. When they had to refuse us yesterday, she saw my name and called me personally. Then today called back with the Yes for Jim, but no for me. Case worker really tried to get special exemption for me, but that only works for end of life residents for last goodbyes. Again, law. They have wonderful PT, and specialize in all things memory and brain related - what Jim needs. They have weekly FaceTime day for each wing, and Jim supposedly could get an aid to call me so he can talk to me. No phones or tvs in rooms, which is great since Jim does not really watch TV. All private rooms with shared bathrooms. I have to list positive aspects to help cope with the fact he may go nuts when he does not have access to me for two-three weeks. They moved that rascal to a different room - right across from the nurses station to keep an eye on him better - and he had a nurse call me because he was scared, did not know where he was, where was I etc earlier today. Yet they told me this morning before that he was totally lucid, answered all their questions correctly, and even called doctor by his correct name! I need positive thought and prayer for him to be able to handle this separation so as to heal, get better and stronger, and come home to me. For those who know him well, you know he is a friendly guy. When I asked how he did today, they said he walked around - with a belt restraint to catch or guide him, but no walker - sat up in his chair for over an hour, and hung out with them at the nurses desk for about an hour and a half. I was like ?? Standing up?? They said he seemed restless and bored and kept asking for me, so they brought him to the desk and sat him in a chair, and he entertained them. I was like were you entertained? The young man laughed and said “oh yeah”. Jim does not drink, but give him a brain event, and no telling what he said! I did have another tech ask me if I really met him on a caving trip, and he and another said it sounded like we had both had quite an interesting life with many adventures. I think they will miss him, and probably why my ears were burning?! I bet the walls at that desk will never be the same, and they know things about us that would make me blush!! But I wish I had been there to enjoy the show 😊 Will be there early and stay till he goes to rehab to make sure we say goodby, and explain again what is happening and why. Hang in there Mimi. Sometimes the best and hardest things to do in medical treatment requires hurting someone to help them. That takes strength and is nothing anyone can criticize you for. They had asked me yesterday if I wanted them to dig deeper into new law to get Jim into rehab, and I said no. Hence my update yesterday. But family was worried about me, for it really is just me, so I texted doc late last night and said check. All because of unreported deaths, virus cases etc in nursing homes and rehab centers! And because he hops out of bed and tries to go where he wants, he will be in a lock down unit. So. I feel he would get better faster at home mentally, but I can not give him the other things he needs. I have to be honest about my physical limitations and accept help. Mimi, You had a tough decision to make but ultimately it comes down to the best care for Jim and his recovery. Get all the at home health care assistance and rehab you can, especially at first. Thank goodness you can get some financial help from FMLA. Your are strong and wonderful, but remember to take care of yourself since that is vital for both of you. Sending love and strength and prayers for all of you. Mimi, I'm sure this is a worrisome time for y'all but may good and positive thoughts be with both you and James from everyone. As far as they can tell, it was a clot from heart that caused strokes on both sides of brain. Could have been seizure along with that, and intense evidence of major trauma to tongue from thrashing around caused subdural hematoma ( in sack or area around right side brain - bleed NOT in brain!). All tests so far today show bleed is stable, and no more strokes. Watchman procedure was successful and a good try to get Jim off Eliquis - super high level blood thinner - but obviously Jim is one who needs the heavy duty blood thinners☹️ Hence the strokes. Nothing we did was wrong, but did not give him the protection he needed 😢 Still on IV, total liquid diet, but can swallow, and this is improving. Is more alert, moving better, speech better, and WANTS OUT TO GO HOME!! Main concerns are high blood pressure and renal - kidney - function. Changed blood pressure IV meds to kidney friendly ones, put in a catheter for urine help, and have run every test possible to find cause of kidney decline. No medical cause so far, so could be a massive drop in blood pressure during stroke event. Have no idea how long event lasted, but serious low bp can cause ATN - acute tubular necrosis. Wait, treat, and see on this - heavy good thought and prayers here. DO NOT WANT DIALYSIS! Also, since no blood thinner protection due to bleed, could throw another clot. Still very weak, so only me can call. Doctor does not think he could pick up phone by himself. In hospital probably another 3-5 days, then thinking rehab for a bit. With lockdown and me not with him, could cause mental stress bigtime☹️ He is strong, stubborn, and wants to get home, so please keep lifting us up with prayer and positive thoughts. Happy Mother’s Day to any it applies to 😊🌸❤️ My daughter Amy, her boyfriend Walt, and my beloved granddaughter will be up later to give me a lovely outdoor picnic in backyard. Re: [Texascavers] James Jasek Sunday doctor update
Hi Mimi, Thanks for the updates. If you have any questions about speech, voice, cognition, language, or swallowing following a CVA please let me know. It's my area of expertise. Many patients on my typical caseload are adults with difficulties in these areas following a stroke. Lindsey On Sun, May 10, 2020, 3:08 PM Mimi Jasek wrote: > > Current doctor update. Mimi, Thank you for updating us. I am so sorry to hear this and we're all hoping for a full recovery. My heart goes out to you - not being allowed in the doctor's office with a loved one now is agonizing, so I can't imagine what it must be to not be by his side in the hospital.
