Re: [TMIC] Sweating
I'm so glad someone started this conversation. Nobody (doctors) has explained to me why these symptoms appear except to say that no, I don't have Lupus etc. I get a fever before the sweating and the only place I sweat is the back of my head. It just pours and I have to put a towel around my neck. The only place I have the freeze burning is a patch between my shoulder blades. I don't post very often so I should tell you I'm 9 yrs into TM and 'possible' MS. I can walk unassisted about 30 ft. I have a cane and have been using a walker more and more in the last 2 yrs. Saw my neuro last week & he's not happy with the downhill status so he's sending me for some rehab work. The backsliding has been gradual so he doesn't think we're looking at MS. My last MRI showed no change. Hi all, Yup Heather is right! In spinal cord lesions, it is "normal" to not sweat below the level of injury. Also, your body has a hard time adjusting to temp changes and where the nerve damage is you can get blotchy skin when it gets too hot... Take a look at this site, very good info to be found! http://www.apparelyzed.com/temperature.html Marieke (TM @T1, March 2004) http://nurse-to-be08.blogspot.com Date: Thu, 20 Mar 2008 18:39:11 -0700 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: tmic-digest Digest V2008 #89 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] --Forwarded Message Attachment-- tmic-digest Digest Volume 2008 : Issue 89 Today's Topics: Re: [TMIC] (no subject) [ Heather & Pieter <[EMAIL PROTECTED] ] [TMIC] Fwd: TODAY SHOW scheduled for [ CANDIS KALLEY <[EMAIL PROTECTED] ] Re: [TMIC] (no subject) [ [EMAIL PROTECTED] ] [TMIC] Sweating [ "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" <[EMAIL PROTECTED] ] [TMIC] Fwd: Sweating [ [EMAIL PROTECTED] ] --Forwarded Message Attachment-- Date: Thu, 20 Mar 2008 12:04:59 -0600 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] CC: tmic-list@eskimo.com Subject: Re: [TMIC] (no subject) Hi Linda, I don't seem to sweat below my lesion at T8 - T10. Re: [TMIC] Fwd: Sweating
I was effected ( or is it affected?) from T10 - T12 with my first episode with TM and then C4 - T1 on the second episode. I"ve made good recovery from being a quad. I have full use of my R arm/hand and most of my L arm/hand, however, my strength has deminished terribly - a gallon of milk feels like I'm lifting 50 lbs. I do not have any feeling in my L leg but it is the strongest of the two. My R leg has spotty feeling, but it is the one that is undependable and will spasm or give out whenever. My feet always feel cold but they do sweat - if I wear soxes they are damp when I take them off. I sweat like I've ran a marathon from the shoulders up - sometimes just sitting in my recliner I will break out sweating! Then the next moment I will be so very cold. It's worse than when I went thru premature change of life! My bottom, feet and legs always feel cold to the touch. If I sit on something cold, it feels like it is heated - when I went in the hospital the first time, I thought that were heating the bed pans and it was really nice - but when I had to removed my own bed pan is when I discovered that they were still the same old cold bed pans! Boy what a let down after 3 days of thinking that the hospitals were finally concerned about a patients comfort. Both of my legs are extremely sensitive to cold. If cold water hits either leg, it feels as it nails are hitting them. My R leg will spasm violently if my R foot is in cold water. I have to make sure that the water is warm and I'm sitting on my bath stool before I can put my R foot down and turn the shower on. I have the red spotches mainly on my L arm but have seen them in various places on my body. I also get a rash on my L arm, always in the same place, which seems to occur after I've been stressed. The rash will itch like crazy several times a day while the rest of the time it just looks terrible. I drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water daily plus 2+ cups of coffee, a glass of juice, and a 20 oz bottle of energy drink daily - no wonder I have to empty my bladder hourly. I don't really have control of my bladder - when I get the urge to go, I may have 1 - 2 minutes to make it to the bathroom otherwise the pad I wear needs to be changed. I use to have really good control of my bladder. Luckily, I have an ileostomy so I don't have BM problems which is great cause I don't have control of my muscles to push to empty my bladder or have a BM. I'm always with a terrible back pain. Cymbalta helps. TENS helps. A back brace helps. Pain pills help. Soaking in very warm water helps. BUT, nothing takes away the pain - all of the above dulls the pain but there are days that nothing helps, especially when the barometer is changing or I've over done the day (sometimes week) before. Other than TM and TM's residual effects listed above, I'm in good health and feel good. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: tmic-list@eskimo.com Sent: Thursday, March 20, 2008 5:43:04 PM (GMT-0600) America/Chicago Subject: [TMIC] Fwd: Sweating Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. Hi, Linda! This is what makes this site such a wonder! I, too, have the greasy line' around the band but had never attributed it to anything! I have a real problem with full blown sweating above the T4 level right up to the top of my head which I had never had problems with before! Plus!! I have to lather lotions and creams on my legs and feet. Strange, huh? My left side is the very worse when it comes to spasms, coldness, and pain but it is by far the strongest. It was the first side to become paralyzed. The right side had hypersensitivity from the start and still has touch sensations but feels dead inside as the left side also does. The right side is also the one that drags. But when I drive it does come to the rescue as it controls the gas and brake. I rarely use the hand control. I did this for a year as I tried to return to work 40 miles away. Isn't that just amazing? I still feel like I am full of wet sand from the chest down even tho I can move around pretty well. I walk like a drunk so it's a good thing to carry a cane when we go somewhere otherwise I get funny looks and chuckles behind hands (that's true!)!!! It's too bad there aren't neurologists and providers reading all of our info They could sure benefit from it! [TMIC] Re: Sweating
I agree, Linda! That is why I said that I wished some neuro's and providers would learn from everything we write about and maybe some one person that comes into their office with similar symptoms then they can wisely help them instead of just shrugging their shoulders and saying, "Ahhh, right...you have Transverse Myelitis." and yes, that is exactly what happened to me, not once but twice by two different neurologists! I, too, have red splotches on my skin mostly on the right side and right foot. The skin also gets flaky around the splotchy area. I use Neosporin which helps. Both of my legs feel like they are in ice water but when you touch the right one which is the strongest but worst when it comes to pain and spasms, it is warm. The right one always feels much cooler. All of these strange things, right?? When I was still nursing one of the Internists I worked with was going to help me get a series of questions together for patients with TM to see what we all have in common both before and after the onset. Since I was unable to continue working because of the loss of stamina so we didn't get it done. We still can do that. I think it would be very interesting. I wouldn't mind starting it if we could get enough interest?? Think about it. It would probably be a big help for people to use in going to their own providers. RE: [TMIC] (no subject)
Linda, I don't have the banding all the time. Mostly it is when I am tired, stressed, or not feeling well. Some times it is just there for no apparent reason but during those times it seems more tolerable than when I am tired, stressed, or not feeling well. I am T-4/ T-9 and early on, I didn't sweat in that range or below. That's pretty normal for paralysis. That is why it is so dangerous for para's and quad's to be out in the heat. We can't turn on the bodies air conditioner.(Sweat) That might explain the (greasy sensation) around the affected areas. I don't remember ever having that sensation. I do remember as my feeling was coming back I itched horribly. A nurse pored corn flower on me and that seemed to help? Anyhow, that's my two cents. Hope everyone has a beautiful day! Happy Spring!
