I can not imagine how miserable that must have been. I have not had any
esperience like that ever and cold does not bother me in that way. The only
thing I could think of to do was inhale my bottle of baclofen. It helps with
my leg spasms at nite. Hope that never happens to you again - you have
suffered enough. Janice

Oh the joys of TM - yes I also have the same problem - our internal
thermostats are also affected. Once you go either direction, hot or cold, it
seems like forever before it evens out. I don't know how many times I've woke
up sweating like a race horse and then the next minute I'm freezing and it
takes forever to get back to sleep. I know it's not menopause because that
happened many a year ago and quit long before TM.

My legs burn like they have 2nd degree sunburn while my feet feel as

Heather I have found that sometimes you just have to do what you have to
do!! I flew alone to be with my mom when she was in her late 80's and I was
so glad that I did. Everyone was so kind and helpful. I too use a walker and
sometimes a cane! Long trips are awful but my son is getting married in
Lima, Peru in November and I am definitely going to be there! I have hand
controls on my car because I do not have any real control over my legs. All
rental cars have handicapped equipped cars. And they are not allowed to
charge extra for the device. There are different types but it's so easy, you
catch on very quickly. Tho it sounds like you have lots of people to ferry
you around. Have a wonderful time!! I love it when our family gets together!

I'm s ready to get off the plane when we land. I do not need to change
planes or anything so that is another good thing. I have found that everyone
involved with air travel has so far been really good. Oops. with one
exception. Last fall I flew back east first and my husband followed a week
later. Going through security here in Calgary my WalkAide set off the
security and I had to take it off the leg, explain to them what it was etc
etc. Wires, batteries etc. Almost missed my flight. This time I have
located the booklet on it and will keep it handy. Last fall I misplaced it
just prior to packing. I actually had it packed. Then decided to take a
different carry-on piece of luggage and could not for the life of me figure
out where the booklet went. I found it in January this year when I was

age, road conditions they now meet in May. I don't often see these gals but
am hoping to get there this year for the little reunion in mid-May. Really

2009-04-09 Thread marieke dufresne

I have travelled by plane alone and with my boyfriend (now ex). Last time I
went alone was from Montreal QC, Canada to Seattle, WA. Took 2 planes there and
2 back. (Mtl to Toronto to Seattle there, Seattle to Vancouver BC to Mtl back).
The long rides were 6 hrs, the short was 1.5 hrs (Mtl-TO) and 30 min (SeaTac to
Van).

I travel with my wheelchair and bring my cane and wear my long leg brace. When
I travel alone I usually get bumped to FIRST Class for FREE! I ask for seats
close to the bathroom (and often they figure since I am alone I will need more
help as I am in a chair, and they have more time to help when in 1st class).

The first time I travelled alone I was nervous about going through security,
the only time they ever gave me problems was going from Mtl to TO to Seattle.
The Mtl security (US side) was ok really, but one lady there wanted me to take
off my brace... um, I need to take off my shoes/pants.. I just looked at them
and said, it's a brace that surrounds my leg, no hollow parts, I can't hide
anything there. I was pissed, not b/c that they wanted to check it, that's
fine, but it was her attitude that really got to me. She was rude and talked
like I was mentally challenged. Um , hello, I may be in a wheelchair, but I
am perfectly capable of making conversation! Grrr...

Don't let the difficulties of travelling stop you! It sounds harder than it is,
and I was plenty worried, but it turned out just fine and I had a great flight!
(the attendents were so very nice and helpful and it doesn't hurt that I look
under 18 sometimes!).

[TMIC] Cody Unser Oscar Qualifing Runs

2009-04-09 Thread Jim Lubin

NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: April 7, 2009

Cody Unser Documentary Oscar Qualifying Runs Scheduled in NYC and LA
(Albuquerque, NM) –Christopher Productions and The Cody
Unser First Step Foundation are proud to announce that the theatrical
release of the documentary entitled, CODY; The First Step begins
Oscar Qualifying runs in LA County April 17th –April 23rd, 2009 and
in New York City from May 1-May 7th, 2009.

CODY is a powerful documentary that charts the
extraordinary story of Cody Unser who was tragically struck with
Transverse Myelitis at the age of 12. The disease left her paralyzed
from the chest down. However, she refused to let that diagnosis
define her and instead at age 13 founded the Cody Unser First Step
Foundation to ensure that money would be raised to find a cure. For
the last five years Cody has lobbied state legislatures and Congress
to push for stem-cell research which offers the key to her own
recovery. During the film, Cody shares with the viewers her
determination to walk again. The film takes the viewers on an
intimate journey with Cody detailing her daily emotional and physical
struggles. The film also charts where science and politics
intersect. Visit http://www.cufsf.org/www.cufsf.org to see the trailer.

Cody Unser said, I hope my story will shed some light
on what it is really like to live with paralysis. I also hope that
the film will lead to more research dollars so that paralysisnot
just for me, but for all people, will become a treatable and
reversible diagnosis. I want to thank all the people who have made
these Oscar Qualifying Runs possibleespecially Don Chalmers Ford,
the Off Shore Super Series Powerboat Racing Association, Johns
Hopkins Project Restore, and the Al Unser Jr. Children's Charities.

Chris Schueler, Director/Producer of CODY said, Cody
Unser has become an inspiration to everyone associated with the
production. Despite her paralysis, Cody has not only remained
remarkably independent but has made some amazing accomplishments. I
am honored that Cody was willing to let our film crew into her life
and I am confident the documentary will forever change how the public
views people who are not disabled but rather differently abled.

  Janh,

I like that. We are a living puzzle. Good thinking. I'm sure there are
other ailments in this world that people with them feel the same way. I guess
a lot of conditions, especially ones that are not so common resemble puzzles.
Also by looking at some of the different websites that are up and running, I
wonder if there are more people now with TM or are we just finding each other
because of the internet??

Jan, I did not know, but it makes sense, that you only sweat above the

does it come over you all of a sudden, sometimes for no reason? Janice

The only thing I was told that I would not regain, is
my temperature!! My legs which were paralyzed, feel hot on the
inside and freezing on the outsidethus phrase
freeze/burning...I cannot stay out in heat too long
because I can sweat only above my point of paralysis (t8)
and heat stroke is possible sooner than normal folks would be
affected..I can't complain tho', cause as the saying goes, just look
around and you'll see someone worse off..at one time there was a fellow in
group who sweat only on one side of his face and his max time sitting under
tree in Arizona was 5 minutes!!
TM has given so many varieties of ailments that no two of us suffer
alikeit's like living the life of a puzzle!!!

Heather I have found that sometimes you just have to do what you have to do!!
I flew alone to be with my mom when she was in her late 80's and I was so glad
that I did. Everyone was so kind and helpful. I too use a walker and sometimes
a cane! Long trips are awful but my son is getting married in Lima, Peru in
November and I am definitely going to be there! I have hand controls on my car
because I do not have any real control over my legs. All rental cars have
handicapped equipped cars. And they are not allowed to charge extra for the
device. There are different types but it's so easy, you catch on very quickly.
Tho it sounds like you have lots of people to ferry you around. Have a
wonderful time!! I love it when our family gets together! Cherish those moments!

misplaced it just prior to packing. I actually had it packed. Then decided to
take a different carry-on piece of luggage and could not for the life of me
figure out where the booklet went. I found it in January this year when I was
moving some things around to do with our luggage. NOW I know where it is.
Of course with the memory problems that we have (well some of us have) with TM
I could forget where it is by that time. LOL

  Heather,
You are so brave to travel alone. I am trying to get the strength I
need to travel, by car, with my husband, to Savannah, Ga.
I am in therapy for my legs now and hopeful I can make a trip like that
this fall. It would be to see my sister and her husband.
I love Savannah deeply, but will not go during the hot months. We used
to go every March - a perfect time to visit there. Sure hope I can make it
this fall.I know you all will have a great time and it is justly deserved!

Funny how this came up. I live in Calgary, 2000 miles from where I
grew up in Hamilton Ontario. About a dozen or more of my high school friends
get together every May now. Used to be at Xmas every year since 1964, but with
age, road conditions they now meet in May. I don't often see these gals but am
hoping to get there this year for the little reunion in mid-May. Really
looking forward to it as it has been more than 40 years since I have seen some
of them. TM or not I plan to get there this year. Hubby staying home so I'm
flying solo this time. I have lots of family there too and miss them all
terribly.

My legs burn like they have 2nd degree sunburn while my feet feel as
if they are in an ice bucket! The burning, itchy, stingy occurs all over the
body for whatever reason. It seems as if everyday its the same but different
in different ways.

Life is short! Break the rules! Forgive quickly! Kiss slowly!
  Love truly, Laugh uncontrollably .
And never regret anything that made you smile.

Prayers and thoughts for you and yours,

I knew Dave was going to have surgery at some point, but not sure when. Must

HOSPITAL. I WONDER IF THERE ISN’T ANY SOCIAL ORGANIZATION THAT CAN ARRANGE FOR
SOMEONE TO BE WITH YOU WHILE DAVE IS HAVING HIS SURGERY. IF THERE IS, YOUR
DOCTOR’S OFFICE OR THE HOSPITAL SHOULD BE ABLE TO PUT YOU IN TOUCH WITH THEM.
I SURE WISHED WE ALL LIVED CLOSER SO WE COULD HELP EACH OTHER IN TIMES LIKE
THIS.

AT TIMES LIKE THIS WE SURE NEED FAMILY. I AM SO FORTUNATE THAT MY DAUGHTER

When I travel alone I usually get bumped to FIRST Class for FREE! I ask for
seats close to the bathroom (and often they figure since I am alone I will need
more help as I am in a chair, and they have more time to help when in 1st
class).

It sounds harder than it
is, and I was plenty worried, but it turned out just fine and I had a great
flight! (the attendents were so very nice and helpful and it doesn't hurt that
I look under 18 sometimes!).

Hey Guys!!! Sounds like everyone is really ready for SPRING!
I am really ready to dig my hands into the dirt and get my flower pots ready
for summer.I can't plant in the ground anymore, but I sure go nuts with my
pots!We have already planted pansies and they are looking great. Won't be
long for spring.

Got another question for you all. Do you have a problem with
all of a sudden getting too hot - and no one else is? It isn't

hot flashes, had a complete hysterectomy over 20 years ago. This
just started since TM (2007). My doc has given me patches

of clonidine. You change it every week and it does help - doesn't
cure it, but it helps. I am dreading warm, humid weather because that is when
it is the worst. We live in Missouri and the summers get pretty warm and
humid. But we keep our house pretty cool in the winter too.I really
notice it when I am more active.

What about you all?

I have only been on the site a couple of months, but I really miss
your chatting when it is quiet.I know every one of us has a lot to deal
with, some more than others. But, when we are emailing, we are all on level
ground and getting to know the real person, not

just the TM person. I have many friends, but I count myself very
fortunate to have found you all.

Sorry, no suggestions.Again, it is such a good feeling to know that many of
my problems are similar to you all. I used to think it was all in my head.
I would pull my gown or a blanket up my body and it would send spasms,
especially in my torso, for a few minutes and then it would settle down.
Wonder if eventually it will go away. Sure hope so for all of us. I
have no problem wearing shoes as far as pain goes, but it feels good to get
them off. I am going to have to give away a lot of my shoes because I
can't wear heels anymore. I do not want to wear tennis shoes in the summer -
too hot. So, I will have to get sandles that have no
heel and give some support. I intend to start clearing out my closet of shoes
next week.Oh well, at least I have 2 feet - even if
I can't dress them up anymore.Janice

I am exactly the same! So what do you do about shoes? I arrived at my
Rheumatologists office in flat open sandals in 8 inches of snow this winter.
He looked down at my feet and said I don't even need to ask
Also it hurts to have my very soft sheets touch me. I know there are a lot
of us who have this challenge. Suggestions anyone? Thanks

Same here! my feet burn 24/7, they fell like there in grease frying all the
time. I can not take socks or shoes on my feet, even the blankets oin the bed
hurt them.

HI JANICE:

I DIDN’T GET YOUR ORIGINAL POST ABOUT BEING WARM ALL THE TIME, BUT DID
GET JEANNE’S ANSWER TO YOU. I HAVE THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE PROBLEM. I AM COLD
B! ALL THE TIME. THE WORST ARE MY FEET. THEY FEEL LIKE A BLOCK OF ICE
MOST OF THE TIME. THIS WINTER I HAVE BEEN MEISERABLE. I HAVE HAD TO HUDDLE
UNDER BLANKETS WHENEVER I AM SITTING STILL FOR A WHILE. EVEN LAST SUMMER WHEN
WE HAD THE AIR CONDITIONING ON, I HAD TO HAVE A SWEATER. I HAVE BEEN TOLD TM
SCREWS UP YOUR INTERNAL THEMOSTATE. I DON’T WANT TO TAKE ANY MORE MEDS SO
WILL JUST KEEP A SWEATER HANDY WHEN IT IS TIME TO HAVE THE AIR ON THIS SUMMER.

TAKE CARE, JANICE.

   Hi, Jan,

It looks like we TMer's are back in business with all of the
notes going back and forth and your temp. problem is one of the main subjects
right now! I'm so glad we're back in business as I miss you all when we take
our 'naps' as we do off and on.

I'm off to stay with my little Sis for a couple nights so we can
meet up with my big Sis and go to our monthly '60's Chicks' luncheon in
Grandview which is where we graduated from. All Grandview 'chicks' no matter
what year they graduated try to meet and we have lunch, chat for a couple hours
and off we go. It is really a special time as we have all learned how special
life is and is not to be taken for granted. Some we haven't seen since
graduation or longer. Take care, all! Jeanne in Dayton

I also can not wear shoes or socks. Not even the ‘softest socks” out there, I can’t tale anything touching my feet. I have to sleep with my feet outside of the covers because I can’t take the sheets touching my feet. The skin on my feet feels tight and they burn like they are frying in grease. Winter is hard as when I am in public without shoes or socks on so many people stop me to tell me its cold and why don’t I have anything on my feet. I get tired of telling the long story so just tell them due to nerve damage I can’t wear them. Then people start telling me “wear soft socks” I tell them sock and shoes burn m feet. But its amazing how people do not listen and keep telling me which socks to buy that will help…I understand people mean well but it’s hard to explain that even my feet toughing the foot pegs on my wheel chair is very painful. So far I have learned to try to put them up when I can, and I keep mint type foot lotion with me all the time and it is a short time relief. So when it’s snowing or freezing out here I am rolling around bare foot. But funny thing is I love foot massages. When someone rubs my feet it feels so good and I don’t want them to stop.
Have tried Neuratin, did not work, how I am on 60mg Cymbalta and it seems to help the nerve damage in my legs but no change in my feet.

hot flashes, had a complete hysterectomyover 20 years ago. This just started since TM (2007). My doc has given me patches

of clonidine. You change it every week and it does help - doesn't cure it, but it helps. I am dreading warm, humid weather because that is when it is the worst. We live in Missouri and the summers get pretty warm
