Re: apache2.0.39 + tomcat4.1.x + mod_jk2.so
I've temporarily given up on trying to configure mod_jk2 as my last post on the issue came up without a response. (I'm secretly hoping that the person developing jk2 is listening and is currently looking through the logs I posted seeing if anything looks familiar.. other than that, I'm sticking with mod_jk v1 for production and getting ready to see if 4.1.6 is the answer to my prayers tomorrow.) Re: The best website database!
I've only witnessed one occasion where someone else was able to do something pretty cool with Access, but it was sufficient enough for Access to earn a bit of respect from me. I think many Tomcat users use MySQL and PostgresSQL due to the fact that they've got an open-source (as well as free) solution. At least I do; I can't afford Oracle, nor do I need it. Will, I use MySQL, and I'm happy with the MySQL Front free gui interface for it, however I don't think it's /quite/ what you're looking for. You don't design queries in MySQL (or in other apps I've seen) the same hands-off way you can in Access. Be this a blessing or a curse, I couldn't tell you. MySQL Front's website http://www.mysqlfront.de has some screenshots, check them out and see if they're helpful at all. I normally design all the queries in MS ACCESS and then I just write the single line command SELECT QUERY1 rather than writing the full query in a javabean or jsp page by hand as this saves me alot of time. Ideally, you will, in time, wean yourself of this reliance, as most databases do not have a GUI. In the long term it's better to have a more intimate relathionship with SQL, minimally for performance reasons. But, it seems pretty clear you haven't reached that threshold yet. However, all is not completely lost. One of the Neat Things(tm) about MS ACCESS is not so much that it has a built-in database based on Microsofts Jet Engine, but that it can act as a central access point for, technically, any number of ODBC compliant databases. So, you can theoretically still use ACCESS as your primary database, but have all of the tables be linked from the true database host. This will certainly cost you performance, and the queries you devise may not work quite like they do in native ACCESS, but it will be close. Particularly if you are sticking close to the most basic of SQL functionality, and not relying on a lot of the higher level functions provided within ACCESS. If you're using mostly Pure SQL, then ACCESS is simply a data broker, and yet another layer between your app and your DB. As long as the contention and locking facilities are being used in the native backend, versus within ACCESS, you should gain quite a bit of reliablity over pure ACCESS as well. I'm not totally sure if this is the case, but it probably is, again for basic SQL statements. The goal is to use ACCESS simply as an interface into your new database, and have it broker your SQL statements to and from the database, with hopefully as little intervention as possible. Your SELECT QUERY1 will still work, however, but beware that ACCESS will potentially happily suck in all of the data from the new DB, churn on it, and then spit it back out to you. Depending on the query, this can be expensive and isn't what you want. If you like the simplicity of SELECT QUERY1 from ACCESS, I would suggest that you perhaps use ACCESS to develop your basic queries, and then use the actual SQL generated to turn them into VIEWS on the host DB, so the SQL in your Java becomes SELECT * FROM VIEW1. Again, it's almost always better to use the literal SQL rather than VIEWs, etc. ESPECIALLY if you're joining them together. SELECT * FROM VIEW1, VIEW2 WHERE ... CAN be very expensive. It all depends. But, when you data or activity gets big enough to actually notice the performance dogging, this kind of stuff tends to float to the top pretty quick, so when you need to fix it, you'll find it. These kinds of things work great with 10 rows in the tables, and die horribly with 1 rows. You WILL have issue with BLOBs of any kind, however. Of course, if you continue to receive data from your admin in ACCESS format, you will need a way to convert that data into the new back end. Ideally, this to can be automated from ACCESS as well: INSERT INTO NewBackEndTable SELECT * FROM OriginalACCESSTable. So, the point being, that even if you go to a new

RE: The best website database!
Hi Amram, Take a look at SAPDB (www.sapdb.org). It's free even for commercial applications, very scalable powerful, has plenty of functions, stored procedures, transactions, replication etc., a nice user interface in Windows. JDBC, ODBC, Perl and Python interfaces, a C/C++ precompiler and lots of documentation is available. For a simple website that doesn't require transactions this might actually be almost an overkill, and a lightweight db be more appropriate (like MySQL). SAPDB is closer to the big ones like Oracle. I personally like it a lot, unlike PostGreSQL it runs well on Windows. Re: The best website database!
I agree fully with Liam I'm an Apache/Tomcat user with a MySQL database, I use MySQL Front and have found it to be an excellent client application for accessing, importing and exporting data. Access can export data to CSV format which can simply be imported via MySQL Front for cross compatibility. Beware though, there are certain MySQL issue to be aware of: 1/ No support for UNION (at least in 3.23) 2/ No support for Sub-Queries 3/ No stored procedures or even stored queries/views (except in a sql text file). A variety of workarounds are available some of them more successful than others though. And it's not difficult to install. Best Regards, Anthony Geoghegan. SSL and Authentication
Hello everyone. I have a security-contstraint set up with url-pattern/*/url-pattern and JDBCRealm, and I have SSL configured in server.xml. Both the JDBCRealm and SSL are working, just not quite as I'd like. Currently, when the user first enters my site (/mysite/index.html), he is asked to authenticate himself. When the user requests a page through SSL (.../location=https:8443/mysite/../Registration.jsp), he is again asked to authenticate himself. What I want is: 1) The user to be able to access index.html (and a few other pages) withought authentication. I'd rather not have to enter every page individually under web-resource-collection. *2) The user to not have to re-authenticate himself when he selects to go to Registration.jsp via SSL. Re: Need help with Tomcat on Apache on Windows 2000
No need to use the debug version unless you plan on actually debugging it in Visual Studio or something. Here's my include statement: Include C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Jakarta/tomcat-4.1.3/conf/jk/mod_jk.conf You can autogenerate the mod_jk.conf file by doing the following in your server.xml: Put the following right after the Server... element and change the paths for your system: Listener className=org.apache.ajp.tomcat4.config.ApacheConfig modJk=c:/Progra~1/Apache~1/Apache2/modules/mod_jk.dll jkDebug=info workersConfig=c:/Progra~1/Apache~1/Jakarta/tomcat-4.1.3/conf/jk/workers.properties jkLog=c:/Progra~1/Apache~1/Jakarta/tomcat-4.1.3/logs/mod_jk.log / Put the following right after any and all Host... elements you have: Listener className=org.apache.ajp.tomcat4.config.ApacheConfig append=true forwardAll=false / This will output a mod_jk.conf in the CATALINA_HOME/conf/auto directory. After this is done, I suggest commenting out the stuff you added to server.xml and copying the conf/auto/mod_jk.conf to conf/jk/mod_jk.conf. This makes it so if you want to tweak your mod_jk.conf, you can do that without worrying about it being overwritten. Now you just have to worry about the workers.properties. I'm attaching mine for your convenience. I'll also attach a copy of the auto-generated mod_jk.conf. If you have everything under the localhost Host and notice that you can't hit hit your app at any address but http://localhost/mywebapp, remove the following from mod_jk.conf: VirtualHost localhost ServerName localhost Or, just make sure to set your app up under the proper host in server.xml. Either way will work. Also, in addition to the somewhat messy setup of the mod_jk.conf that you see autogenerated for most of your contexts, you can also configure it simply like this: JkMount /myapp ajp13 JkMount /myapp/* ajp13 That negates the need for all that extra Alias, Directory, and Location stuff since all it does is tell Apache to forward everthing to Tomcat. The disadvantage of this clean setup is that Apache will no longer serve up static files which would take some of the burden off Tomcat. Anyway, that's it. Attached are my example files. Re: What does this error mean loading mod_jk module?
Rick, I found that a big tricky as well. It took a little guesswork, but the name of the module has been changed- instead of jk_module, it should be named jk2_module. If you make that change in your httpd.conf, you should be all set. Since I didn't see any JSP entries in the $CATALINA_HOME/webapps/examples/WEB-INF/web.xml, I merely copied it over to my own directory and deleted all the tags concerning servlets and EJB's. Now my JSP runs fine from my own directory. I still don't know what should go into web.xml but that seems to be it for the time being. Now for another question: is there a special location for tag library definitions (.tld's)? I wrote a version of my program that uses a tag library but I can't seem to get it to run. Re: Need help with Tomcat on Apache on Windows 2000
Joey, Jakarta Ant is actually a java compiler of sorts, not a connector.. but from that website, it looks like you're trying to use mod_jk. I didn't see your Include line in your httpd.conf file. The syntax for it is something like this: Include C:/tomcat4/conf/auto/mod_jk.conf what are the contents of your C:\tomcat4\conf\auto\mod_jk.conf file? And do you have a mod_jk.dll file in your apache\modules directory? Is there anything in your error log, which is in your apache\logs\error.log file? Sometime in the future, you might want to think about upgrading Apache to the latest version http://www.apache.org/dist/httpd/. There was a security hole mentioned for the 2.0.36 release which has been patched in 2.0.39. RE: Need help with Tomcat on Apache on Windows 2000
Hey Joey, Ant is a make tool. It would be best if we knew exactly what version. For instance, I am using Apache 2.0.39 and Tomcat 4.0.3, and Java SDK 1.3.1 I also followed this guide, but I did not build anything myself. http://www.galatea.com/flashguides/apache-tomcat-24-win32.xml for instance, I followed the link to the compiled dll, and I was able to get my version running by downloading this mod_jk.dll http://www.acg-gmbh.de/mod_jk/Release/mod_jk.dll This one was compiled using Apache 2.0.39 and Apache Tomcat 4.0.4; I was originally trying to use the connector from Tomcat 3.3, but it failed miserably. If you make any changes to your httpd.conf or mod_jk.conf, remember to RESTART APACHE. Also, check the event viewer if your service fails to start. That helped me troubleshoot a lot. the very last line of my httpd.conf file is (notice the forward slashes / as apposed to the usual \): # include mod_jk.conf Include C:/Program Files/Apache Tomcat 4.0/TomcatOnApache/mod_jk.conf # I have a folder in my Tomcat directory called TomcatOnApache where I store all my files My mod_jk.conf file looks like this: #begin mod_jk.conf IfModule !mod_jk.c LoadModule jk_module modules/mod_jk.dll /IfModule JkWorkersFile c:/program files/Apache Tomcat 4.0/TomcatOnApache/workers.properties JkLogFile c:/program files/Apache Tomcat 4.0/TomcatOnApache/logs/mod_jk.log JkLogLevel info JkMount /*.jsp ajp13 JkMount /tomcat-docs ajp13 JkMount /tomcat-docs/* ajp13 JkMount /struts-documentation ajp13 JkMount /struts-documentation/* ajp13 JkMount /bookstore ajp13 JkMount /bookstore/* ajp13 JkMount /webdav ajp13 JkMount /webdav/* ajp13 JkMount /examples ajp13 JkMount /examples/* ajp13 JkMount /struts-example ajp13 JkMount /struts-example/* ajp13 JkMount /manager ajp13 JkMount /manager/* ajp13 JkMount /jsp ajp13 JkMount /jsp/* ajp13 #end mod_jk.conf * And my workers.properties file looks like this: * #begin workers.properties # Tomcat Home Directory workers.tomcat_home=C:\Program Files\Apache Tomcat 4.0 #Java Home Directory workers.java_home=C:\jdk1.3.1 #Environment slash; \ on NT and / on Unix/Linux ps=\ # ps=/ worker.list=ajp13 # , inprocess #-- DEFAULT ajp13 WORKER DEFINITION -- worker.ajp13.port=8009 worker.ajp13.host=localhost worker.ajp13.type=ajp13 worker.ajp13.lbfactor=1 #-- DEFAULT LOAD BALANCER WORKER DEFINITION -- worker.loadbalancer.type=lb worker.loadbalancer.balanced_workers=ajp13 #-- DEFAULT JNI WORKER DEFINITION- worker.inprocess.type=jni #-- CLASSPATH DEFINITION - worker.inprocess.class_path=$(workers.tomcat_home)$(ps)lib$(ps)tomcat.ja r # worker.inprocess.cmd_line=start #Java 2 jvm worker.inprocess.jvm_lib=$(workers.java_home)$(ps)jre$(ps)bin$(ps)classi c$(ps)jvm.dll # Setting the place for the stdout and stderr of tomcat worker.inprocess.stdout=$(workers.tomcat_home)$(ps)logs$(ps)inprocess.st dout worker.inprocess.stderr=$(workers.tomcat_home)$(ps)logs$(ps)inprocess.st derr #end workers.properties -Original Message- From: Joey Kovacs [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Saturday, June 29, 2002 4:22 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Need help with Tomcat on Apache on Windows 2000 Thank you Liam My connector I believe in ANT I am using Tomcat 4 Apache 2 Java SDK 1.3 - this is supposed to be my JKD?? Re: SSL and Authentication
I figured out that I'll need to refactor my directory structure and use seperate security-constraints. I'm curious, is there a standard or preferred way to do this? My next step is to integrate Tomcat with Apache, and then an EJB server (perhaps JBoss?)... --Dmitry Dmitry ... [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello everyone. When the user requests a page through SSL (.../location=https:8443/mysite/../Registration.jsp), he is again asked to authenticate himself. Hi. In the first case, it looks to me like tomcat should have been started -- these are the normal messages. Try to connect to :8080/http://localhost:8080 with your browser. Re: [4.1.6] Milestone available for testing
I just ran some benchmarks with 4.1.6 and noticed a couple of things. 1. 4.1.6 is showing less of an impact once the connector reaches the max processors. With 4.0.3, I was able to trigger a out of memory error by letting JMeter continue for a couple minutes after tomcat reaches the max processors and is denying connections. I discovered this by accident when I was running benchmarks with 120 con current connection hitting pages with lots of JSTL tags. the max processor was set to 75. 2. performance appears to be more consistent memory and cpu wise. Under moderate and heavy load, the cpu usage varies more with 4.0.3 and it takes longer for 4.0.3 to return to normal memory usage. This was done with just task monitor and not optimizeIt or JProbe since I can't get JProbe to work correctly with jasper2. 3. tag pooling does show 5-10% improvement over jasper2 w/o tag pooling. Once I figure out how to get JProbe to work with jasper2, i will run more tests. peter --- Remy Maucherat [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hightlights in this test release include: - fix for a memory leak in the request dispatcher - many fixes and refactorings in Jasper 2 - admin webapp improvements - other misc fixes See the release notes for the list of changes.
