The Touch doesn't need the -63dB setting for the analogue outs that was useful on the SB3). There is no additional "analogue" level control on the Touch. The Touch is a new circuit not a tweak to the SB2/3 circuit. On ALL SB's the digital level control is always "in-circuit". The analogue outputs on the SB3 did NOT need to be off for bit-perfect output - the digital level needs to be at 100 and no replaygain... As I don't need client-side HDCD decoding or dts playback, I prefer to use replaygain and proper gain staging through my system. I'm never going to agonise about the perfection of the 16th or 20-24th bits :-) I do agree that an option to lock the Volume at 100 should be provided (although replaygain will still override that!). Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Wimax USB 3g/4gdongle support ? Cant a person dream?
I have an easier way which I am already doing. Just take a Touch and a large USB drive to work. problem solved. I also have Clearwire so I have another solution for your air card. Buy a cheap router that excepts USB air cards. When we go to shows we setup a wireless access point for people with one of the routers designed to take the Clearwire USB air cards. Also if some people close to you at the office want to have an SB Radio on their desk, set up an old wireless router, log your Touch into it and give out the pass code to the people that want to use an SB Radio. Do not hook the router up to the Internet or your office LAN. You are only using the router so the other Squeezeboxes can talk to your Touch. I do just this at out weekend cabin which doesn't have Internet. I start the Touch up (it scans the USB drive and logs into my old Dlink router), I plug the Boom in the kitchen in, I power up the SB Radio in the bedroom, and have a pair of AudioEngine A5s attached to the Touch in the lodge room. -- iPhone *iPhone* Media Room: Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono's, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, Vandersteen Speakers: Quatro Mains, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Video: Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1 Living Room: Duet, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Kitchen: Squeezebox BOOM Bedroom: Second Boom Bathroom: Squeezebox Radio Ford Thunderbird: Duet, Mac Mini Ford Expedition: SB Touch, USB drive iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77031 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

[SlimDevices: Touch] Wimax USB 3g/4gdongle support ? Cant a person dream?
Ok, yes, before anyone says it's stupid etc let me just get it out. I think having support for USB 3g/4b devices would be cool. I have clearwire and have both the USB dongle and a home unit. Being able to pop the wimax usb dongle into the touch would be great. Ok, I admit this is niche, but it might get some press in wimax circles. The one case where I want this is at work. It would allow me to stream from mysqeezebox etc without using the office network (can't do it). This would give me a touch on my desk with both local and mysqeezebox access with very little extra stuff. Of course a person can get a Craddlepoint router to plug the usb wimax dongle into and then use Ethernet, but that's no fun :) -- pounce pounce's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12645 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77031 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Help Buying 2.5" External Drive
A good rule of thumb is this: If the USB drive has a port for DC power, or ships with a weird 2-headed USB Y-cable, it requires more power than 1 USB port can provide. If the drive does not have a power port and just includes a single cable, it is designed to follow the USB spec. I've played with it, and yes, you can do other things with Samba. There's a template config file that SbS modifies to add its shares. If you edit the template file you can do things like add more shares, change the workgroup name, etc. However, I think the template file gets clobbered during a firmware update (see erland's concerns elsewhere). -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=76997 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

See this discussion of 'VolumeLock and Squeezebox Radio' (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=71095) -- the same is pretty much true of VolumeLock and SB Touch. It cannot prevent you from changing the volume via Touch's screen or IR remote, but it can quickly restore the volume. That's *not* a good substitute for addressing Jim's ticket though -- I just offer this as a short-term hack until someone makes a proper fix. Touch offers a really cool new possibility on the fixed output front. With 100% fixed (when available) and a '$10 USB-to-serial cable' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=11436) (and a not-yet-written applet), Touch should be able to directly control volume and more on amps & receivers that have RS232 inputs -- and to effectively web-enable amps & receivers with RS232 ports. Jim, thanks for posting about this. Votes should help, as Logitech recently *downgraded* the importance of this request (see 'its change log' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_activity.cgi?id=14807)), pushing it farther into the future. Since the software involved is all BSD-licensed, anybody could create a patch (and even publish it directly to other customers thanks to Erland's Patch Installer applet), so I hope this problem will have a good resolution pretty soon. -- peterw http://www.tux.org/~peterw/ Free plugins: 'AllQuiet' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/AllQuiet.html) 'Auto Dim/AutoDisplay' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/AutoDisplay.html) 'BlankSaver' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/BlankSaver.html) 'ContextMenu' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/ContextMenu.html) 'DenonSerial' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/DenonSerial.html) 'FuzzyTime' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/FuzzyTime.html) 'KidsPlay' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/KidsPlay.html) 'KitchenTimer' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/KitchenTimer.html) 'PlayLog' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/PlayLog.html) 'PowerCenter/BottleRocket' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/PowerCenter.html) 'SaverSwitcher' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/SaverSwitcher.html) 'SettingsManager' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/SettingsManager.html) 'SleepFade' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/SleepFade.html) 'StatusFirst' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/StatusFirst.html) 'SyncOptions' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/SyncOptions.html) 'VolumeLock' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/VolumeLock.html) peterw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2107 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77018 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

So you don't have to unplug the drive, drag it to another machine, copy files and drag it back. Just leave the drive where it is, and drag-and-drop the files. (No clue what the subtle differences between SMB and CIFS are, but it's Samba, so it should just work.) Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch pointed to network share?
Thanks for the info. I'll look into this tinysbs. I'm a performance and automation tools architect. My daily job is software and system performance. I generally don't make performance statements without testing. That's why even when developers believe performance will be a certain way I generally don't bank on it until proven (don't take it personally). I also try to quantify performance deltas rather than to state they suck or they perform reasonably well. I'd personally compare the two and take a few functional use cases and quantify the performance by timing responses whether that's UI or otherwise. Of course Andy and others know more about the system and can guess better than I. I have to believe someone will try this out at some point so I'll be paying attention. :) -- pounce pounce's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12645 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=76997 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

I have a Touch, but unless I suddenly find a few hours with nothing better to do I doubt I'll experiment with it. Like I said, when people who know the system inside out like andyg say performance will suck, I tend to believe them. I mean, what would they gain by lying about that? In other words, you may not be convinced, but I am. Fyi for the details, the Touch runs SBS but with certain features disabled. "TinySBS" does not support the web ui, does not support transcoding, does not support the oldest players (SliMP3 and SB1), and does not support 3rd party plugins, although it does support 3rd party applets. TinySBS uses SQLite as the db backend, which is also an option on the regular SBS as of 7.6. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=76997 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

If you have a Touch and feel like giving it a go and letting us know how the performance delta I'd appreciate it. I really don't spend a lot of time in the forums and really don't know the micro details of what's been implemented. Really didn't know there wasn't any sort of http on the device. I'm sure if they wanted to add this sort of functionality that they could come up with an elegant way to do it. A small utility or some config file you add to a memory card or usb stick on a one time basis... who knows. I really don't like buying things if I think there is a 50% chance I would return it. Not fair to the seller. I think I'll wait and see if others try this out and it works ok. They aren't even shipping yet so i guess it will be several weeks before I'd consider a purchase.
