+1 - categorically bit-perfect when vol=100 (DTS and HDCD prove this).
The Touch doesn't need the -63dB setting for the analogue outs that was
useful on the SB3).

There is no additional "analogue" level control on the Touch.

The Touch is a new circuit not a tweak to the SB2/3 circuit.
On ALL SB's the digital level control is always "in-circuit".

The analogue outputs on the SB3 did NOT need to be off for bit-perfect
output - the digital level needs to be at 100 and no replaygain...

As I don't need client-side HDCD decoding or dts playback, I prefer to
use replaygain and proper gain staging through my system. I'm never
going to agonise about the perfection of the 16th or 20-24th bits :-)

I do agree that an option to lock the Volume at 100 should be provided
(although replaygain will still override that!). I've voted.

2010-04-08 Thread iPhone

I have an easier way which I am already doing. Just take a Touch and a
large USB drive to work. problem solved.

I also have Clearwire so I have another solution for your air card. Buy
a cheap router that excepts USB air cards. When we go to shows we setup
a wireless access point for people with one of the routers designed to
take the Clearwire USB air cards.

Also if some people close to you at the office want to have an SB Radio
on their desk, set up an old wireless router, log your Touch into it and
give out the pass code to the people that want to use an SB Radio. Do
not hook the router up to the Internet or your office LAN. You are only
using the router so the other Squeezeboxes can talk to your Touch.

I do just this at out weekend cabin which doesn't have Internet. I
start the Touch up (it scans the USB drive and logs into my old Dlink
router), I plug the Boom in the kitchen in, I power up the SB Radio in
the bedroom, and have a pair of AudioEngine A5s attached to the Touch
in the lodge room.

The only way there would be any possibility at all of doing this is if
you had source for a linux driver for the USB dongle. It would then
have to be compiled for ARM with the exact kernel used by the Touch and
then loaded at boot time.

Its not impossible but kind of messy, assuming you have the source for
the driver in the first place.

The digital out IS bit perfect as long as the volume is set to 100, its
been tested by several people and does correctly pass a DTS file. Just
don't change the volume and you'll be fine.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Wimax USB 3g/4gdongle support ? Cant a person dream?

2010-04-08 Thread pounce

Ok, yes, before anyone says it's stupid etc let me just get it out. I
think having support for USB 3g/4b devices would be cool.

I have clearwire and have both the USB dongle and a home unit. Being
able to pop the wimax usb dongle into the touch would be great. Ok, I
admit this is niche, but it might get some press in wimax circles.

The one case where I want this is at work. It would allow me to stream
from mysqeezebox etc without using the office network (can't do it).
This would give me a touch on my desk with both local and mysqeezebox
access with very little extra stuff.

Of course a person can get a Craddlepoint router to plug the usb wimax
dongle into and then use Ethernet, but that's no fun :)

You can connect the drive to a windows box first and disable the CD
area using software from WD. That's what everybody has been doing when

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Help Buying 2.5" External Drive

2010-04-08 Thread andyg

A good rule of thumb is this:

If the USB drive has a port for DC power, or ships with a weird
2-headed USB Y-cable, it requires more power than 1 USB port can
provide.

If the drive does not have a power port and just includes a single
cable, it is designed to follow the USB spec.

The drive I have been testing with works fine self-powered, it's a
320GB WD Passport and does not have any sort of power port.

I've played with it, and yes, you can do other things with Samba.
There's a template config file that SbS modifies to add its shares. If
you edit the template file you can do things like add more shares,
change the workgroup name, etc. However, I think the template file
gets clobbered during a firmware update (see erland's concerns
elsewhere).

Mine ordered yesterday from the Logitech website in the UK appears to be
with UPS and is on it's way. There was no indication at the time that
it was in stock.

Touch should always be running Samba, as it shares the system log
folder in read-only mode.

You are indeed lucky I've been told that US and Canada
Logitech.com web sites will indicate In Stock on Monday April 12.

Sorry for the hassle and confusion, guys. I was hoping it would be
sooner.

I don't think it does have a preamp volume control.

*If* you enable that feature -- you can leave that disabled even if you
do attach a disk. There's also a simple touchscreen UI for setting a
username & password for accessing the share. I haven't looked to see if
the usual Samba command line tools are in place for making more complex
setups if you're willing to SSH in to the Touch.

Now I noticed that on Amazon, you can click on the Touch where they
show the entire SB family. This takes you to a page that says
"unavailable".

I guess I missed my small window of opportunity yesterday when the
Logitech website had them available.

I thought being part of Logitech was supposed to be an *advantage*
regarding distribution.

Ugh!

See this discussion of 'VolumeLock and Squeezebox Radio'
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=71095) -- the same is
pretty much true of VolumeLock and SB Touch. It cannot prevent you from
changing the volume via Touch's screen or IR remote, but it can quickly
restore the volume. That's *not* a good substitute for addressing Jim's
ticket though -- I just offer this as a short-term hack until someone
makes a proper fix.

Touch offers a really cool new possibility on the fixed output front.
With 100% fixed (when available) and a '$10 USB-to-serial cable'
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=11436) (and a
not-yet-written applet), Touch should be able to directly control
volume and more on amps & receivers that have RS232 inputs -- and to
effectively web-enable amps & receivers with RS232 ports.

Jim, thanks for posting about this. Votes should help, as Logitech
recently *downgraded* the importance of this request (see 'its change
log' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_activity.cgi?id=14807)), pushing
it farther into the future. Since the software involved is all
BSD-licensed, anybody could create a patch (and even publish it
directly to other customers thanks to Erland's Patch Installer applet),
so I hope this problem will have a good resolution pretty soon.

Toshiba is very good about staying below the USB power spec. I would be
willing to bet it will work fine because a company like Toshiba doesn't
want returns and this drive has no means of connecting external power.
But you are right that until somebody tries it, we will not know for
sure. And thanks for the $10 lower price find. $159 was the best I
could find when I looked last week.

How does that go then for bit-perfect output from the Coax SPDIF?
Will the digital volume still be "in circuit" and therefore teh output

It's taken so long for this to come out, so it's exciting and I'm
trying to be upbeat :-).

Looking at Amazon's website, I realized that the Squeezebox Receiver
isn't listed either (and hasn't been for some time). Hopefully this
doesn't mean that the Touch is now in the same category as the Receiver
- waiting for more units to be manufactured in some factory in China.

My optimism defalted a bit after realizing that.

Yeah, I just noticed that the Squeezebox Touch has disappeared totally
from Amazon. Maybe it's a good sign - perhaps they are updating to to
say "in stock - place your order now!"

Toshiba has a '1TB portable USB powered USB drive'
(http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/adet.to?poid=471538) on sale for
$159 on their main site. If that is large enough for your needs. Nice
to just have the USB cable and no external power except for the Touch.

Anyone else get it through Amazon.com? I'm hoping they start shipping
soon. My toddler is starting to walk and she is a bit too interested
in the CD shelf and boombox that I hope to replace with my Touch.

Please Mr.Logitech man, save my child! Tell Amazon to start shipping

[SlimDevices: Touch] status of Logitech order for Touch

2010-04-08 Thread Kiwi

I placed an order for a Touch in early March. The status of this order
has not changed since I placed it and I don't understand why if the
Touch release "button" has been pressed. These forums show that
European orders are leaving the warehouse as of April 7th.

Have any members who placed an order with Logitech in the US received
any notification of a change in status for your order?

Order Date: 03/03/10 15:56:25
Order Status: Order in Process

Add me to. I thought the whole idea of a pre-order was to have the item
in hand (or at least in transit)on the day of release. At least that's
how all the pre-orders I have placed with various online vendors
(Apple, Amazon to name a couple) has worked to date. Sounds like the
left Logitech hand has no idea what the right Logitech hand is doing.

Yes, United States.

It showed as out of stock until the very last page which was the
'submit order' page. I figured I might as well order it as Logitech
will be the first to have them back in stock, most likely. Sure enough
it showed as 'in stock' at the very last page.

If units are in stock in the US, why can't it be determined when they
will begin shipping?

It seems the entire Squeezebox line has been infected with a level of
weirdness the past few months that has been off the charts.

Maybe Mr. Quindlen needs to sign up for an episode of the "Undercover

Yes, the Touch runs a Samba server when you plug in an external storage
device.

So you don't have to unplug the drive, drag it to another machine, copy
files and drag it back.

Just leave the drive where it is, and drag-and-drop the files.

(No clue what the subtle differences between SMB and CIFS are, but it's
Samba, so it should just work.)

I don't know where you saw that or where it came from, but I can tell
you its not true. I have my Touch running standalone at this time with
two Booms, SB Radio, two Receivers, a Transporter, and four SB3s. So as
far as I am concerned you are not going to have a problem. Now it can
basically only 'Show' two at a time as in itself and the one it is
controlling without going to a sub menu and picking a different player
to 'show'. And unless sync'd, it can only control/show one player at a
time without switching the 'Choose Player'.

Did that answer your question?

Thanks for the info. I'll look into this tinysbs.

I'm a performance and automation tools architect. My daily job is
software and system performance. I generally don't make performance
statements without testing. That's why even when developers believe
performance will be a certain way I generally don't bank on it until
proven (don't take it personally). I also try to quantify performance
deltas rather than to state they suck or they perform reasonably well.
I'd personally compare the two and take a few functional use cases and
quantify the performance by timing responses whether that's UI or
otherwise.

Of course Andy and others know more about the system and can guess
better than I. I have to believe someone will try this out at some
point so I'll be paying attention. :)

[SlimDevices: Touch] Assigning Favorites to number buttons.

2010-04-08 Thread harmony895

On my Radio when i push a number on the remote, like 1 and then the play
button it plays the first favorite of my radio list.
Button two/play the second and so on.

How can i get this working on the touch?
I see the Beta with holding Ir0, Ir1 and
But when i assign a favorite station under this and playing a other
station, then holding button three it assigns the station i am playing
for this moment under that button.

Is there another way, or am i doing something wrong??

Glad there is someone as excited as I am. I CANNOT wait. I'm in the US
though and I do not know when to expect it. The Touch sounds so
awesome.I watched the videos.

This only applies to logitech.com, correct? I have noticed none of the
other online stores (amazon, crutchfield, J&R) list it as released or
in stock.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch released or not?

2010-04-08 Thread MickeyG

Here's the latest news I have on being able to buy a Touch from
Logitech.com:

- United States -- now listing as Out of Stock again. Still working
  on it.
- EU countries -- also listing as Out of Stock. Still being
processed, web site should change this status on 9 April to Add to
  Cart
- Switzerland -- available 16 April

Pre-ordered units starting shipping in Europe 8 April. Don't know about
US.

I have confirmed that Squeezebox Touch units are in stock in the US and
Europe, and Out of Stock is misleading.

These were pre-orders from October last. There was an announcement on

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch pointed to network share?

2010-04-08 Thread aubuti

I have a Touch, but unless I suddenly find a few hours with nothing
better to do I doubt I'll experiment with it. Like I said, when people
who know the system inside out like andyg say performance will suck, I
tend to believe them. I mean, what would they gain by lying about that?
In other words, you may not be convinced, but I am.

Fyi for the details, the Touch runs SBS but with certain features
disabled. "TinySBS" does not support the web ui, does not support
transcoding, does not support the oldest players (SliMP3 and SB1), and
does not support 3rd party plugins, although it does support 3rd party
applets. TinySBS uses SQLite as the db backend, which is also an option
on the regular SBS as of 7.6.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch pointed to network share?

2010-04-08 Thread pounce

If you have a Touch and feel like giving it a go and letting us know how
the performance delta I'd appreciate it.

I really don't spend a lot of time in the forums and really don't know
the micro details of what's been implemented. Really didn't know there
wasn't any sort of http on the device.

I'm sure if they wanted to add this sort of functionality that they
could come up with an elegant way to do it. A small utility or some
config file you add to a memory card or usb stick on a one time
basis... who knows.

I really don't like buying things if I think there is a 50% chance I
would return it. Not fair to the seller. I think I'll wait and see if
others try this out and it works ok. They aren't even shipping yet so i
guess it will be several weeks before I'd consider a purchase.

Thanks for your time.
