No update on the bug report yet... all gone rather quiet - it would be
nice to get this fixed.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Last few seconds of song being cut off...

2010-05-04 Thread DigitalMitch

Tony,

you can raise the bug yourself at http://bugs.slimdevices.com/

the best way to help is to be very specific with your details so that
others (notably QA at Logitech but also interested users/devs) can
replicate and confirm.

that means including as many variables as you can (type of file, size
of library, type of USB drive, number of players, sync or not).
logfiles may also help if they show something.

teh bug process is in a sticky
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74846

I suspect I've experienced the same problem, but wasn't paying enough
attention to confirm and its inconsistent with me. I'm having lots of
other problems which may be overloading the CPU and therefore this may
be another symptom but could equally be unrelated. If I capture
anything I'll hunt down and add to your bug.

others can add their experiences and vote.

Mitch

It also works with the Radio and Boom. In fact, the Controller works
with every player ever released in the product lineup (here for all:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Hardware_comparison).

The Controller communicated with the server, and the server
communicates with the players, so players that were released before the
Controller was conceived will work. The Controller also doesn't need to
know specifically about players released after the Controller was
conceived.

Hi Phil,

You did read my post didn't you ;)? It works if I impact the streaming
to all of my devices. My flac are all at -5 and I have many of them so
I don't really want to re-encode them if HQ here are working on a more
robust fix/solution.

If a non-teckie user (like my Dad who is at the limit of web use and
playback via SB) buys some 96/24 flac online and has to then re-encode
them to get them to play is hardly a desirable solution is it ?

SBT should play 96k flac at any level of compression.

hi john

thx for your detailed write-up.

i'm still at the samge stage, trying to pull apart the case. yes, very
slowly. looks like i really need a putty knife.

yes, i want to replace the digital output rca with a bnc. i also want
to see whether i could get i2s or not. see what chips are used and what
i could do to get the best digital output out of it.

i'm only using it as a digital transport so the dac and headphone amp
section, i'm going to ignore it. if i could remove its power, that's
even better!

right now powering with paul hynes 5v supply for squeezebox. as i'm not
using an hdd nor thumbdrive to it, paul's 1.5a supply is still
sufficient.

thx again!

[SlimDevices: Touch] Cover art problem since update to 7.5.0

2010-05-04 Thread mik3000

I use

Squeezebox Server (7.5.0-r30464)
Touch (7.5.0-r8673)
Receiver (Firmware: 65)
Controller (7.5.0-r8673)

Since my update from 7.3 to 7.5 I have following problem with cover
arts at the Controller (and on my new Touch too), but not at the Server
on the computer:

Mix-Album, e.g. Norah-Jones Mix, with different songs from different
CDs.
Each MP3-song has its own integrated cover art, depending of the
original CD.
The songs for this Mix are stored in one folder Norah-Jones Mix and
all songs tagged as the same album Norah-Jones Mix, so they appear in
Squeezebox Server in one album Norah-Jones Mix.

When I play this album:
- at the Server on the computer I see in the playlist the different
songs with their individual (different) cover
- on the Touch and on the Controller I see for all songs in the
playlist only the same cover of the first song ?! The now playing
cover is for all songs the same (the first cover of playlist/mix
album). This behaviour is new on the Controller since my update to
7.5.0.
When I choose in the menue of the Controller (or Touch) for one song
show cover art then the correct cover art is shown?!

I made a rescan and a also deleted the database and made a new scan:
No Improvement.

Best regards for help or a bug-fix in a new Software.

Mikel

What file-system and block size are you using on the HDD? I see that
the twin is HFS formatted, but you don't explicitly say the one you
used is HFS. I think this is probably more relevant than the number of
files. Same questions for the USB stick.

MCG555: I don't know the compression rate of my 24/96 flac files,
because I did not generate them myself.

Most of them have been generated by a friend of mine, from 24/96

pretty sure he did not use any fancy compression level, but I will ask
him anyway.

I also bought a couple of these files from the Gimell Records label
(http://www.gimell.com), and I don't know their compression rate.

Next week-end, I will test my HDD with only a couple of files (and hope
that my backup HDD will not fail at this very moment !!).

Steve: The 1.5 To HDD used with TinySC is FAT32 formatted (the Touch
does not support a HFS formatted disc directly connected to it). I
formatted my drive by using the Disk Utility on my Mac.

I don't disagree that it should work with flac @ at any rate.

I don't see how streaming as PCM (in the meantime) would impact your
other players as the server only serves up one stream no matter how
many players there are (if synched). You should have plenty of
bandwidth even for 5 different unsynched pcm streams...
Of course, I'm assuming your router is wired to your server... :-)

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Adjusting text size

2010-05-04 Thread TJHUB

Frankly I'm surprised I haven't seen more threads around the internet
regarding the text size of the Touch. I don't know how most are using
the Touch, but I would have expected many to use them with a stereo
system sitting in an audio rack. For me, this means I sit about 12'
away from the Touch which makes the screen basically useless even with
the large text skin currently built in. I find this VERY unfortunate.

I currently own a Duet and I frequently use my laptop to control it.
While this means I don't really *need* to view the Touch's screen, it's
just another aspect of the Touch that seems to have failed.

I'm very close to returning the Touch and just stick with my Duet. It
would be nice to know that something could be done to make the text
more viewable from a distance. This would seem to not be a very
difficult task.

Have you actually seen the Touch? Depending on your eyes and the room
lighting it might be fine at 12', although I would guess that would be
true for only a minority of users. For me 12' is borderline but do-able
if the room isn't too bright. There is 3rd party development work on
screensavers that allow for a wider variety of font sizes, although
there's always the tradeoff then of how much fits horizontally on the
screen.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Adjusting text size

2010-05-04 Thread Mnyb

I'm struggling to see it sometimes I could see the SB3 just fine and i
did not use its largest font ?

But no setting on Touch can match the SB3 in visibility at a distance.
I could read the text on my SB3 from anywhere in my living room.

Using a completely black background instead of a fancy picture helps.

I judge that if SB3 is 100% the Touch is visible from 60-65% of the
distance and in somewhat narrower angle both horizontally and
vertically .

Thats is one area where the SB3 actually was better.

Otherwise I think Touch is a good device in it's own rights.

Therefore I often use my controller, or squint a little and use Touchs
ir remote :)

When you have a wall-powered squeezeplay device you notice how often
controller is in it's vegetable state spinning the wheel .
So the UI is much faster on Touch vs controller.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] how to open up the squeezebox touch?

2010-05-04 Thread JIJ3

I am interested in modding the Touch as I did with the receiver, to
bring out I2S signals with LVDS drivers and bring in slave clocks from
my Dac. This requires mounting LVDS driver and receivers in the
vicinity of the Touch DAC or processor. In the receiver I was also able
to mount a DVI connector on the box. It seems like the room for this may
not exist inside the Touch. (The receiver is WONDERFULLY spacious)

John, you have the most experience with the insides of the Touch. Any
room for such mods? If not, I will likely want to pull out the receiver
circuit board to mount elsewhere (sacrificing the controller - I am very
happy with SlimControl on my Windows phone and don't really use the
Touch controller).

Actually, all I want is an upgraded receiver for 88.2K and 96K
files...

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Jack Jones

2010-05-04 Thread foxx

I have also experienced what you are describing. So I can confirm it.
But I'm not sure it is a bug. I would consider it deliberate
behaviour.
Since you are playing an album, but there are multiple covers to choose
from, the device chooses the cover art of the first track and considers
this to be the cover belonging to this album. There is a certain logic
to it.

 other suggestions?

You need to have your auto-ripper NAAS connected to your network so it
can get cover art and ID3 tag information for your ripped music. The
Touch is usually connected to your network as well. So if you had a
VortexBox as soon as you connected it to your network it would be
connected to your Touch.

Here's how the VortexBox works.
1. Connect VortexBox to your router
2. Put a CD in the drive. It will be ripped in about 4 minutes.
3. Select vortexbox as the server for your touch and play. (The
vortexbox will appear on the server list)

If you need to use your Touch without a network you would need to copy
the music to a USB drive.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Music being cut off

2010-05-04 Thread elziko

Hi, before I had my Touch I had a Receiver, hard-wired over a power-line
network and it always seemed to be fine connected to a local Squeezebox
Server (7.5.0 - r30464 ).

I have now replaced the SBR with a Touch (7.5.0-r8673) and when I'm
playing a playlist (I usually use random song mix) the player will
suddenly stop playing although the elapsed time will continue to
increment forever. Clicking 'Next' will nudge it onto the next song and
things will be OK until the next time it fails.

I have attached a Touch log - the music stopped playing twice in this
log. Can any one decipher this, I can't really spot what might be the
problem. There are no entries in the SBS log over this time.

way you describe it the VB Appliance could sit hidden away next to the
router and the SB touch would connect to it wirelessly. Are there
issues of responsiveness if one does that?

Watch the servers cpu usage during this.

How large are this playlist ?

And on random mix how is the setting for how many songs to show ?

Try the default 10/10 or similar.

Try not to press shuffle with a large playlist.

I would recommend to use erlands plugins for playlists if you have a
Touch.
Then you can random from your previously saved large playlists without
problems ( keeping the settings on how many to show at 10-20
something).

Read my bug here to see if it corresponds in some way

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] how to open up the squeezebox touch?

2010-05-04 Thread JohnSwenson

There IS I2S inside. The S/PDIF and I2S come directly out of the
processor. They both go through reclocker flops. I don't remember if
all the signals on the I2S are reclocked or just one of the clock
signals.

There is a quarter inch or so between the main board and the back case
so thin boards can be added. As long as the board has SMD chips and
caps (no electrolytics that stick up from the board) you should be able
to add boards. I would just mount them with insulating double stick tape
to the existing board.

Jack, I'm planing on doing exactly the same thing, a small board with
LVDS interfaces to feed the clocks and take the I2S out. It worked fine
on the SB3. For the SB3 I just ran a pigtail cable (the rolled up
twisted pair IDC cable) through one of the holes after I took out the
connector. Something similar could be done with the Touch.

The connectors for the FPCs have a latch which is on the front of the
connector. Look at the part of the connector where the FPC enters, that
part is actually on a hinge. You need to take a small flat blade screw
driver and pry up that front piece, it will rotate up out of the way.
Once its up its obvious. You can then just pull the cable out. This is
the easy part.

The hard part is putting it back together. You have to feed the cable
back in, properly lining it up, push it all the way in, and then rotate
the latch back down. While holding both pieces of the assembly slightly
apart and trying to squeeze your fingers down in the very narrow space
between sections. Small hands help here! I don't know how they assemble
this in the factory!

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Does the Controller also work for the Touch?

2010-05-04 Thread JohnSwenson

You can even do weird things like have the contoller control the player
in the Touch while the screen on the Touch is controlling another
player!

The Controller even has a player builtin (which drives the headphone
jack), at one point just to see if it would work I had the Controller
controlling the Touch player and the Touch screen controlling the
Controller player! It worked.

Logically you can think of the Touch as having three pieces, a
controller, a player, and a server. In normal use these are connected
together but they don't HAVE to be. Any or all of these can be
disconnected from each other and used across the network with other
squeeze devices in pretty much any configuration you want.

screensavers that allow for a wider variety of font sizes, although
there's always the tradeoff then of how much fits horizontally on the

I have a Touch right now, so yes I've actually seen it. I can read the
track playing, but the artist and album info is on the edge of
impossible to read. Maybe my viewing distance is actually more than
12', I'll measure tonight.

As far as the larger fonts for the small screen, I used to own a Roku
M2000 that I used with the largest, single-line font and it worked well
with the scrolling feature. I'm not saying the font needs to be twice
and big as the current large font, it just needs to be bigger; maybe
2-line with scrolling?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Adjusting text size

2010-05-04 Thread foxx

I believe you are misinterpreting the cutting edge of the Touch.
One of it's main advantages over other media players is that you can
configure and control it without having to have a TV set running or to
have a PC in the direct vicinity of your listening position.

To control it from the sofa the IR remote is only a render of last
resort. Normaly you use the controller or an iPhone, iPod or other PDA.
This works bi-directionaly, giving you all the information you are
expecting to see from your sitting position.

Using it without any of the wifi remotes means you are operating it
similar to a CD player. You are supposed to see the information when
you are standing in front of it, not across the room.

(I'm starting way too many replies about the Touch like this.) During
the beta testing it was suggested that the large font size was a step
backward from the large font size used on the SB, SB2, SB3, Transporter
and Boom. And it was suggested that a similar sized font be introduced
in a single line, scrolling Now Playing screen. Like many others,
these suggestions were ignored by the developers and designers without
comment. Even if it was recognized now that it would be good to fix
the problem, it probably could not be, as the graphic artists and ui
designers responsible for these shortcomings have long ago left the
project.

Try a Left Swipe (IE Go Back) when the Touch asks for a Network
Connection.

The way I have handled this is to put an old D-Link WiFi Router in
service (or buy a cheap used WiFi router). The Touch sees the WiFi
Network and doesn't keep asking for a connection. I do this on the
weekends at our cabin which doesn't have Internet. This also lets other
Squeezebox players use the Touch as a music source without being
connected to the Internet or Ethernet wired. I use a Boom and an SB
Radio on the weekends with just an old D-Link Router and the Touch
running TinySC.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Protecting Your Touch Screen

2010-05-04 Thread iwannatouch

I've read comments about how easily the Touch screen can be scratched,
marred, etc., so I did some investigating about what products might to
available to provide some protection. I found a company called ZAGG
which makes an invisibleSHIELD for the Duet controller, and asked
them if they plan to make a comparable product for the Touch. This is
the response I got:

Hello Rob,

Thank you for contacting ZAGG, where we are Zealous About Great
Gadgets! My name is Betty and I appreciate the opportunity to assist
you. At the moment we do not have an invisibleSHIELD design for that
device, but we might be interested in creating one! You can submit a
request for a new invisibleSHIELD design at the following link:

http://www.zagg.com/hotgadgets/index.php

This request will be submitted to our Hot Gadget Team to research if
the Logitech Squeezebox Touch is a device we are looking for. You
should receive a response from our Hot Gadget Team about your request
within 24 hours.

I hope this helps! Please feel free to contact me if you have any
further questions or comments.

All the best,
Betty

If enough of us express an interest in such a product, we might just
make it happen. Check out the Duet Controller invisibleSHIELD here:
http://www.zagg.com/invisibleshield/logitech-squeezebox-duet-cases-screen-protectors-covers-skins-shields.php.
If you like what you see, I encourage you to follow Betty's suggestion
and put in a request.

Yes, you can add to Favorites from the menu list-items.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] how to open up the squeezebox touch?

2010-05-04 Thread JIJ3

Thanks John,

I wonder if you have decided whether to use your existing clocks and
add a clock doubler to output to the Touch or to use double frequency
clocks? I am tempted to use a clock doubler, which would be jittery,
but since I am reclocking the final output to the DAC anyway with the
receiver-frequency clocks, it shouldn't matter in the end. All the
clock doubler circuits I know require a perfect square wave (50% duty
cycle) input. My Tent clocks are not specified for duty cycle, but they
look good on the scope. I wonder how sensitive you think the Touch
processor is to clock jitter, and whether a doubler circuit would be
good enough? Thanks for your help.

Jack

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Experiencing Touch for a couple of days

2010-05-04 Thread HectorHughMunro

I've had a little while with the Touch as well and it's been generally
positive.  Here are my notes;

1) There's an increase in sound quality on all fronts; as a drive in to
my DAC and from the analogue outs.
2) The touchscreen functionality and menu system works well.
3) It feels better made than the Duet.
4) Using a USB drive, it all slows down enormously. I'm using a 0.75
tb Western Digital My Passport drive with a D Link hub (for power). My
impression is that it slows down as the size of the database gets
larger. I'm expecting this to improve in later iterations of the
firmware.
5) Installation was very quick. Barely ten minutes and it was working
with the database on the PC.
6) I've had no networking problems (using Belkin N+ router).

Generally very good. The only thing that really needs work is the
speed of Tiny SBS with an hard disc. I wonder if anyone has tried with
other types of hard drive? Is a standard 3.5 faster?

Seriously? You should re-read my posts...

JJZolx;543373 Wrote:
(I'm starting way too many replies about the Touch like this.) During
the beta testing it was suggested that the large font size was a step
backward from the large font size used on the SB, SB2, SB3, Transporter
and Boom. And it was suggested that a similar sized font be introduced
in a single line, scrolling Now Playing screen. Like many others,
these suggestions were ignored by the developers and designers without
comment. Even if it was recognized now that it would be good to fix
the problem, it probably could not be, as the graphic artists and ui
designers responsible for these shortcomings have long ago left the
 project.

Thank you for this information. I can understand them ignoring the
suggestion, I just could not understand no one else wanting it. Too
bad really. Since I don't seem to like the sound of the digital out of
the Touch vs. my Duet, I'm sending it back. The Touch does nothing for
me over the Duet and the only real reason I tried it was because so
many stated that the digital output was very good.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Music being cut off

2010-05-04 Thread JohnSwenson

Looking at the log file it looks like you have a major network
connectivity issue. Many times the Touch looses cits connection to your
server, it tries a couple times to reconnect, gives up and tries to
connect to mysqueezebox.com, cant connect there either, gives up and
tries your server again, it connects! Starts playing a song, looses
connection, goes through the process over again.

A few times is got messages from other player in the house that they
also lost connection. So its not just the Touch.

Its a little tough to figure out whether its the server or the network.
I'm leaning towards the network since it couldn't connect to
mysqueezebox.com either. If there was no problem with the network I
would expect it to have made connection to mysqueezebox.com. (unless
you don't have an internet connection up at that time)

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Protecting Your Touch Screen

2010-05-04 Thread starfury

That's quite true, actually.

I did the same thing with Zagg for a POS phone from Virgin Mobile.
Enough people responded that they actually did make a screen protector
for the phone I am speaking of.

How many people that need to respond is the question I guess.

They do make an excellent product. Trouble is, they are rather
difficult to apply if you are a member of the I can never apply screen
protectors without air bubbles crowd.

I couldn't find an equivalent on the Touch.

I was able to save a radio station to favorites by first adding to the
end of the current playlist, then in playlist I was able to save to
favorites.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Adjusting text size

2010-05-04 Thread agentsmith

I have near 20/20 eye sight so I can assure you that 12' away is not
readable for most people. Logi-techs screwed up big time in the
usability department.

The cleverest bit of the original Squeezebox is the huge green one
liner despite the small screen. It made the box a joy to use.

By the way if you look at the nice Touch screen it is very similar size
to a PDA. I am quite sure that Logitech is using its purchasing power
and leverage parts from other PDA or one of their LCD remotes to make
the $299 pricing. And from the shape of the screen I think it will be
a challenge to display large letters like that of the SB2 and SB3.

I am also surprised that no one else raised that issue. And to imply
that the product is designed to be used with an iPhone or the
Controller is bull. That was never stated in the product requirement.
And it would preclude the requirement of many of the users who would
expect the remote control is to work remote from the coach side of the
living room.

I have an iPhone with iPeng, and even I use the remote control 99% of
the time.

If they did a focus group they asked the wrong groups.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Adjusting text size

2010-05-04 Thread agentsmith

Oh and by the way, despite the extended launch date the product is still
not ready for prime time.

The first Touch I bought was certified bricked refusing to go into
initial set up. It think it must have been one of those early samples
waiting in the warehouse.

The user interface is a nightmare compared to the
Transporter/Squeezebox 2/3

The Linux server code refuses to play 99% of my Apple Lossless music.

The Touch is displaying double byte characters as little blocks

Other than that, the box itself is nice and solid, very cute looking.

It was raised, many beta testers commented this a lot during their
first test weeks. I has gotten a lot better since then, mainly due to
changed font sizes and the large font skin with three text lines. I
personally think it can be improved even more by experimenting with
adjusting colors and font sizes. It feels like Logitech mostly has
focused on the small font touch skin so far and not so much on the
large font skin used when controlling it with IR.

I have no problem controlling it comfortably from the coach, of course
I'm more like 10' away so that might make the difference. For people
sitting 20' away I can imagine that it's very problematic and for these
I don't think there is a good solution. The limited display with would
make large fonts unusable, possibly a two line display with a little
larger fonts or a more compressed font style (similar to Boom) might be
a possibility.

Do you have more problems with some specific screen / menu or is there
nothing that works from the couch ?

Are there any competing devices besides the old Squeezebox products
that does this better ?
