Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] All albums and songs listed twice
One interesting thing that the Touch does is that is lists albums that are in the 'Trash'. If you've deleted a file, it doesn't go away until you've connected the drive to your PC and emptied the trash and this can lead to duplicates when using the Touch with a USB drive. Don't know if this is your problem but it's one to bear in mind. -- HectorHughMunro HectorHughMunro's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16514 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78630 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] All albums and songs listed twice
Thanks, NAS sounds appealing. In the meantime, I "swiped and rescanned" (I think that was the option)the USB hardrive within the Touch, which seemed to rebuild the Touch's database. Now, all the album's are properly listed singly. I'm not sure how the double listing of albums occurred- it may have been from connecting and disconnecting the USB drive so many times with new files and/or editing the files over the network from my computer- I don't know. Anyway, now I'm back on track and listening to my Touch with a logical readout of content. Thanks everyone! [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch/iPeng...settings help
Hi again all. First off here is my setup: USB HD connected to PC running Win 7 Home Premium. Running Squeezebox Server on PC. Touch connected to Yamaha AVR via Toslink. iPeng on iPod Touch 8GB 3rd Gen. Everything is updated to latest firmware. = Is there a setting on either the Touch, iPeng or Squeezebox Server that can allow me to press a song on the iPod without it starting immediately? If I understand correctly, pressing and holding a song will bring up a sub menu, which will ask you to "play next", "play", "add to end", etc. However, occasionally a slight mis-touch will just start the song playing, interrupting the song that was playing. Not only is this annoying, but also frustrating and a real mood-killer. I suppose what I am asking is, can I set it up so that even if I just slightly touch the song in iPeng, it will bring up the sub menu? That would sure put an end to the sighs, rolling eyes, and angry looks when someone's song gets interrupted :) Thanks ahead of time for the help :) -- starfury starfury's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=37465 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78729 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

After plugging the drive back in at a later time? My experience is that its generally better to play music after rebooting the Touch after it has finished the initial scan. Then after reboot and plugging in the drive you need to wait while it does the file scan (mush faster than the initial scan) before playing music. Any attempt at playing music while still scanning is doomed. If you STILL have the problems after waiting for the quick scan to complete, then there is really something drastically wrong and we will need to go into some greater debugging. Alex, Are you trying to play music right after the initial scan? After plugging the drive back in at a later time? John I experienced this anomoly after all three scan phases were complete. After the power off etc...repower, reattach USB etc.. I was practicing searching, and it started this restart the song thing. I was playing a song while searching...maybe this is an issue? I also notice that If I look at the USB drive from the Tiny OS SDA1 and I start scrolling thru my cd's on the usb drive the song playing will restart as well.so it was after my search while playing a song then scrolling thru the directories on the usb drive that I noticed this restart thing. I stopped playing the song, then I just played a song, with no scrolling or anything, just listen, 30+ seconds the song would restart and not play the entire tune. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch problems
Hey John, I am really a very technical PC person, been in the development engineering business for a loog time.. The user experience for me the first time around is really lacking. Your posts have helped out alot but the Touch I have is really doing some wierd things. I really dont think the external USb part is ready for prime time, but I bought it anyway and want it to work!! Attaching to my wireless network was easy and worked just fine. I am standalone with a 1.0 TB drive (powered) USB. With 300 cds in FLAC. I did the firmware update via the wireless connection. No Issues. I powered up the touch played with the internet radio etc fine works ok. I then attached the powered on USB drive to the powered on Touch it saw the drive, attached and started the frist file find. I had not warning or earthly idea that there are 3 phases of this file find / database build going on. I stopped I think after the first phase and started toplay songs only to have the song stop 10 seconds into playing of the song so the server could go get the cover art. this took 40 seconds and longer. no sound, but the song play advances and when the song audio comes back its a minute or so later!! I was really disappointed. I am sitting here on phase 2 of the database compilation, 91% there and then the third pahes and hope the stopping of audio of album art is fixed. A few questions: 1. I dont want to unplug the usb drive and re-plug in each and everytime as you suggest to avoid the re-cataloging? IS there anyway this can be fixed? I bought this gem to be able to play my flacs from a USB drive and unhooking and rehooking this in my audio setup is really awful. 2. Several messages while the scanning process is going on overlap..really looks terrible... 3. I guess if #1 cant be fixed I will just put my songs on a pc harddrive and be happy :<((. It looks much nicer than the normal webUI. Its JUST for viewing, there are no buttons, but it seems like that is what many people want. The guy who wrote it did it for a high res flat screen TV so it might be too large for smaller devices, if thats the case it can be shrunk and modified. Its possible to make it display pretty much anything with a little programming. I have it running into an old HP tablet which has a 12" screen, this produces a WAY more visible now playing screen than the Touch itself from across the room. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch problems
I am using my Touch almost exclusively with a directly-attached USB drive. I have a number of downloaded 24 bit files from Linn, HDtracks, Analekta, the Classical shop etc, together with 16 bit flac downloads and rips. Obviously I get the stuttering problem. But that is not the end of it: I am getting fed up having to deal with a host of interrelated problems. 1. the Touch sometimes crashes altogether when playing 24 bit tracks, very occasionally 16 bit flac (doesn't really seem to happen with MP3s or WMAs). It actually turns off and reboots, rescans, sometimes tells me it now can't see the usb drive (which probably got as upset as i did with having its power turned off). 2. Sometimes it just stops playing without crashing 3. This problem seems to happen far more often when using Ipeng, but it does happen when I am controlling the touch manually. 3A. It also seems to happen more often if you try to change the album while it's playing rather than stopping it, deleting the playlist and then starting again: especially in Ipeng but manually too. 4 The Touch seems to particularly dislike my Linn 24 bit download of the Bach St Matthew Passion from Linn. This has 100 tracks in one album . It is also not particularly fond of the Hyperion complete Schubert Lieder edition in 16 bit flac which appears as one album too, even though it consists of 37 cds and 800 odd tracks. 5. The Touch also seems to randomly refuse to recognise the usb drive from time to time and says it can't read it. 6. I have noticed that using Ipeng and when accessing manually (but to a lesser extent) it seems to hang while searching sometimes. Even with my relatively modest 6500 tracks no search = what is the bloody point of this thing anyway? I have tried the very helpful procedure posted earlier and can say that it has definitely helped to deal with the problems; but it has not solved them. The whole thing is beginning to annoy me. I agree with the view expressed that the Touch is not really up to to running as a stand-alone player and server at present. I don't know whether this is because it is underpowered or because the resident squeezeserver is too buggy, but I just don't think it's quite up to the job. I am guessing that the problem with HD files or big playlists or finding files on the usb drive or interrupting what it's doing or even Ipeng are probably just aspects of that problem. One minor aspect of this incidentally is that on many threads it seems to me that those would are running the player in standalone and those who are not tend to have rather different concerns and experiences, and sometimes talk at cross purposes. I am having problems with my PC at present so I can't compare very effectively running the software on a separate server. I am going to try using the Touch with my QNAP TS-239 NAS in the hope that it will run better that way. If not I am likely to lose patience with it, sell my DAC, preamp and power amps, buy a Linn Magik DSI and go and bore people on another forum. -- adamdea adamdea's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=37603 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78386 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch problems
Pushing the little button on the back actually does a reboot. The power button on the screen does two things, it stops the player if its playing any music and it activates the "off" screensaver (which you can choose in the menus), thats it. It doesn't actually power down anything. The server is still running so there should be no problem "waking up", which just changes the screensaver! The only issue is how the drive behaves. Some drives have a sleep mode which will spin down the drive if not being used for a certain period of time. If this happens it might take some time for the drive to spin back up and be ready to play music. There also seems to be some drives that actually disconnect themselves from the USB port after a certain time, this is bad because the server will then stop. If that happens you either have to plug and unplug the drive or manually restart the server, in either case you then have to wait for the rescan. So the big issue is to see how your drive responds after not being accessed for a long time. The easiest way is to just don't play anything over night, then check the status of the server, if its still running then you should be fine. If the server isn't running it probably means the drive has disconnected itself. The best solution for that is to find some way to change its settings so it doesn't do that. The New York Times just published an article on many of the issues mentioned in this thread: "In Mobile Age, Sound Quality Steps Back" http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/10/business/media/10audio.html An interesting point made in the article is that audio engineers are now not even creating good quality recordings anymore: "So audio engineers, acting as foot soldiers in a so-called volume war, are often enlisted to increase the overall volume of a recording. Randy Merrill, an engineer at Masterdisk, a New York City company that creates master recordings, said that to achieve an overall louder sound, engineers raise the softer volumes toward peak levels. On a quality stereo system, Mr. Merrill said, the reduced volume range can leave a track sounding distorted. Modern recording has gone overboard on the volume, he said." So even if you buy a socalled hi def recording, the engineering process many times has messed up the mastering to such an extent that it is not even worth listening to on a high quality playback system. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] USB Digital out?
Here is the link to the other thread. Typically the most value is to have USB on the DAC side. In many cases the Host side is going to be a computer and not a device. I can think of very few devices that can act as a USB host to audio to a USB DAC. Also, typically the USB connection is going to be more limiting than a good SPDIF connection. I say typically because in most cases the USB connection is limited by its common off the shelf chipsets. Only a few manufacturers of USB DAC's have gone far enough to get 96/24(+) working well. I fiddled with this and got my USB DAC's working with the Touch thanks to John's pointers. I do not yet have the Dacport product I mentioned in the other thread. I'm curious to see if it would work without the config changes since it's a 24bit DAC. I would like supported functionality, but like the others here I understand this is more niche and would understand it if Logitech didn't bother changing anything. There are other bugs I'd like to see fixed first if choices need to be made. -- pounce pounce's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12645 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78469 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

I am pretty sure it was suggested during the beta testing, but not picked up. And I completely agree with the spoiled comment. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Stops in middle of song and repeats
John, I did several things tonight over the last 4 hours and I think I am a happy camper for the time being! One of the issues I think I had was not fully understanding how the Touch is setup in the multiple scans, how the menus flow, especially when going thru My Music and selecting a different source. I copied 100GB + to a solid state drive, which is plugged into a external USB adapter. This is one of those very small 1.5 or 1.8 inch ssds you see in the more recent notebook computers. The adapter is a sata to usb device but I have to use a special voltage converter to get the micro sata drive to power up. While I was copying I downloaded the latest squeezeserver and ran it on one of my desktop pcs, once i got connected it worked and played flawlessly. I took this offline and rescanned the new SSD drive and it was fairly fast compared to a spinning 7200 rpm drive. I did not power it down like you recommended. I just selected it and voila it worked, the skipping and restarting did not show up, I searched while it was playing, did all kinds of menu selections etc. It was solid. I even hooked up the coax vs the analog outputs to do some comparion for the audio quality. I put the system into sleep mode many times and came back online and it did not loose the USB SSD etc.. When this things works its really very nice!! I have NO USB external drive noise, and its now fast. I am now at the point where I can start to enjoy the music and the other things the Touch provides, like the Pandora and apps stuff...which to me are a bonus. Thanks for all the help and I will report back if anything hiccups etc. All the best Alex -- adydula adydula's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33723 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78553 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

In the > light of such, what are your suggestions based on? A hunch? Maybe Logitech (and many other companies, including Sonos) can deliver in Canada at the same price but instead _choose_ to charge a higher price. Why? A perfectly good and common explanation is that Logitech thinks Canadians are less price sensitive than their neighbors to the south when it comes to SBs. If they're right about that, then the sales they lose by pricing SBs higher are more than compensated for by the extra revenue gained on the units they do sell. In the US it's the opposite -- they profit more from selling higher volume at a lower margin. It's called demand elasticity, and it's not a hunch. Maybe for the other unnamed products you refer to the demand curves in the US and Canada look the same. If that's the case, _and_if_ the company can supply both markets at comparable costs, then it makes sense for the company to sell at similar prices on both sides of the border. Like Goodsounds says, if you're not happy with Canadian pricing, vote with your wallet and look elsewhere. That will show Logitech that Canadians are price sensitive. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78389 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Adjusting text size
I'm using my Touch that arrived today. I too sit 13 feet away from it. When I look at it in now playing mode (the one with the album art and scrolling title etc.) it is just barely legible. If I hit the now playing button cycle to where it does the "frequency" chart, the title text is more legible. But when playing music in random mode, when I try to look at what is coming up in the play-list everything is too small. I remember those funny magnifying screens they had all over in the movie "Brazil". I'm gonna get me one of those and maybe a bunch of ducts. Getting older sucks. But I like the sound of my new Touch a lot more than the V3 it replaces. I suppose I could put the V3 next to my listening chair, hook it up via wireless and have it synced to my Touch so I can have the more text options. Which reminds me, my Squeezebox server is running out of a computer in another room. Has anyone developed a way to connect to the remote server via a Wii? A Wii interface would be nice. [SlimDevices: Touch] USB Digital out?
I am sure I read on a forum months ago that one of the beta testers got their Touch to output through the USB by 'messing about' with the options. He didn't go into detail of how he achieved this and I was hoping that by release there would be an option somewhere in the menu to do this. Does anyone know how to set the USB to output the digi audio feed? The reason I am asking is I am looking for a new hi-end dac with USB-in and would like to feed it from the Touch via its USB. Having not actually tried this yet, will it just recognise its connected to a dac and automatically start to send out through USB when its plugged in? Non of the default clock styles have seconds. But there is something called the Custom Clock Applet which lets you make your own clock styles. With this you should be able to make a clock with seconds. You download it with": Settings->Advanced->Applet Installer Unselect "Recommanded Applets Only" You should now see Custom Clock in the list. At this point your best best is to go over to the 3rd Party forum and find the thread on the Custom Clock Applet for details on its use. I don't think it lets you do a spectrum analyzer. Thats a complex chunk of code. There is one in the now playing rotation, but putting it in a clock will take a lot of work, which I'm pretty sure nobody has done yet. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] artwork problems
hmm that's strange then. if vortexbox expects cover.jpg, than i just double checked and my artwork is definitely being tagged as folder.jpg by subsonic. anyways, i changed a few covers that aren't showing in squeezebox from cover.jpg to folder.jpg and did a total clear/rescan: still no covers. the only solution that i have found to fix the dead art is to remove the existing art and find another .jpg of the art to replace it and full rescan. not exactly an elegant solution. BTW i need to reinforce that all is working great in vortexbox and this doesn't seem to be a problem that has anything to do with it. -- ratso Emerald Physics CS2.3's - Odyssey Stratos/Khartago amps (coming soon) - Supratek Chardonnay Preamp - Slim Devices Touch - Panamax M4300PM power conditioner - KRK Ergo room correction - Cables by Me! ratso's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11493 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78538 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Will not connect to test.mysqueezebox
OK, installed the latest Nightly 7.6. Now i can see the favorites from mysb.com. But switching to it only works from the webserver and not from the Touch. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] USB Digital out?
sckramer;545174 Wrote: > what about asyncronous USB? for those new DAC's coming out- is it > possible with this hardware? Yes it is. The current firmware does not fully support it though. I have written a patch that does properly handle asynchronous mode and submitted it to Logitech but it has not made it into a firmware release yet. Now this is only going to work for those devices that use generic drivers, ones that take a special driver will not work with the touch. For example HRT streamers that use async will work but the M2Tech will not. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch + Caiman
Thats been known to be the case in other people s systems...its not the Dac itself exactly. as those guys got around the problem by swapping out the opamps. My experience its way beyond the SB3 and easily better than the Touch, but remember my Dac has been modded so is above the standard spec. Before mods though it was DEFINATELY better to my ears (as in couldnt go back to the anaolgue outs) that the SB3. Guess system interaction comes into play and Stan Beresford himself acknowledges this himself. [SlimDevices: Touch] Playing Podcasts / Menu Configuration
Hi all, 1) I'm wondering if it is by design that I'm not able to select podcasts I added in Squeezebox Server from the Squeezebox Touch directly. I do not want to have to use the webinterface of Squeezebox Server for the purpose of playing/selecting podcasts. Looks to me that this feature is missing! 2) Why is there no menu configuration possible from the Squeezebox Server for the Touch as it is with Classic? I mean that is a typical task that is worth using the web interface of Squeezebox Server. All in all, it looks as if there's no one at Logitech that is responsible for usability considerations. But hopefully I'm just missing a detail to get these two things work.
