Are you still on the orginal software? Hang in there - I think that 7.5.1 will soon be out with a bunch of corrections. ...Interesting, isn't it, how Logitech's website detailing the Touch's feature states, and I quote verbatim: "It doesnt matter if your library includes 100 tracks or 100,000." and "You can access music and pictures stored on flash drives and memory cards." I've paid over half a grand for two SBTs, and so far, as the posts on the forum reflect, my experiences have been mixed, leaving me largely disappointed at the SBT's poor stability in normal use. Time for Logitech to amend the website wording? [SlimDevices: Touch] internal server doesn't finish the scan
Poor little thing... So far, it didn't manage to finish a full indexing run. I've tried it "only" twice (because it takes forever, about 2 days). It is pretty mistaken about its ETC, that time estimation gets heavily extended as it goes along. I did follow the instructions I saw here: power it up without disk, let it settle for a while, connect the disk, watch only the progress and don't touch it for the next days. Symptom: The first quick run works fine, then it does a second, more thorough run. That gets slower towards the end and finally the server gets terminated. The screen shows a rather generic error message, something like "local server was terminated because of a problem". The disk is was spun down. Of course I wasn't around to see it happen, only the result. Setup: The disk is a 1TB 2.5" WD Passport, almost full with mp3 and flac, about 100.000 files. Folders can be large, not with files, but with subdirs, the largest has about 1200 subdirs. Am I doing something unreasonable? I could imagine somebody with a 2TB 3.5" drive (or even a raid) full of low bitrate mp3s giving that internal server way more stress than I do... Is there some kind of diagnostic I can help with? Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] how to open up the squeezebox touch?
Now we gotta DUET II (respectively a stripped down Touch) at 3 times the price of a Duet receiver. I am asking myself - who is the actual winner in that game? I am wondering if Logitech guys are reading this. It must be frustrating for these guys - at least for the technicians. I mean, this discussion sounds like pretty bad press to me. Just to summarize what's being said over here - the message is: "Take out everything what makes a Touch a Touch. The community will be more than happy about it - at least the ones who look for great soundquality. There is no way that you can go back once you're done with the tweaks." --- Dear Logitech. Pleeease - build a DUET II - no frills. Half the size of the old DUET should be possible. You might even skip Wifi (or built in a switch to turn it completely off), since Wifi messes with the sound anyhow. Just focus on sound quality. You might think of an I2S output. (I am not asking for USB on purpose) . And 24/192. Stay with 5V on the DC side. We'll take care on the linear supply. You might consider GBIT ethernet. If the quality is good enough you'll be able to sell it at 199$ and probably come out with an even better margin than you'll see with the Touch. For sure you'll have much less trouble compared to the Touch, with such a product. And for sure you'd turn the traditional "High-End-Audio" world upside down, with such a product. ;) TX for listening. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Can the Touch replace a server?
There are a number of options, there is a VortexBox micro applience which is based on the fitPC2 which has a builtin 500G drive, its about 6 watts for the whole thing and about the size of your hand, no fans and the only sound is the drive itself. But its pretty expensive. You can buy a fitPC2 and put VortexBox software on it yourself. Another option is the Sheevaplug, (or the new Guruplug) $99 which has a ethernet and USB jack. You load linux and SBS on an SD card and run the plug off that. You do need an external USB drive for the music library. Of the two the fitPC2 is a more powerfull computer but costs several times more than the plug. Either of these will be a much better experience than using the Touch builtin server. What is the total size of your library? It may be that you need the extra "power" of a dedicated server instead of the "TinySC" built into the Touch? A dedicated server brings you additional benefit of being able to run 3rd party plugins, as well as an overall "more responsive" experience if you are overloading the TinySC capability. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Built-in server performance and display contrast issues.
Hello and Welcome to the Forum. As to using TinySC, it is a feature of the Touch and not the Touch's primary purpose. The Touch's primary purpose is being a NMP. The other things it does are features or gravy. I have been using TinySC for about 9 months now. It does the job its meant to do, takes the place of a Server when one is not available. We should all remember that, TinySC takes the place of a dedicated server when one is not available. TinySC is also limited. Few plugins (just the ones built-in), no WebUI, playlist limited to 100, and so on. Due to limited resources, the Touch UI is going to respond slower then when using a dedicated server. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Built-in server performance and display contrast issues.
I'm semi-guessing here but I think the point is to not have an excessive amount of files in a single folder when using FAT32 for filesystem as this will get slow due to limitations in the file system. This should not apply to NTFS-formatted harddrives. Come to think of it. I wonder if the WD MyBook is NTFS-formatted from scratch? Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Built-in server performance and display contrast issues.
It's a bit unsorted really, but every album is at least in it's own subfolder so I'd say that every folder does not include more than 100 files and most of them only around 15 files. I have now upgraded to the newest firmware 7.6. Upon some brief testing the restarting of songs seems to have been cured. I have not heard any skipping so far either. Let's hope and pray that these issues have been fixed as they are indeed the most pressing ones. The sluggishness as described above remains pretty much the same. -- leadc4ge leadc4ge's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=38240 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78926 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

[SlimDevices: Touch] Built-in server performance and display contrast issues.
Hi, I had written a very long post outlining my experience with the touch and some problems, but for some reason the forums decided to crap on me. So here goes again, in shorter version: I primarily bought the SBT for the improved DAC's. The sound is easily better than my SB3 classic on my > $10k amp and speaker system. And the SB3 classic already performed admirably. So I'm happy with that, but there are some problems I bought an SB touch and also a WD MyBook 1,5 TB USB 2.0 external harddrive to house my 310 GB (12400 song mostly FLAC) song collection and to be played back via the built-in server. 1. The UI is sluggish (yes, it has completed the scanning). Navigating albums/artist is somewhat OK but it takes 10 seconds for a song to start playing after pushing play and another 5 seconds for the UI to update. Although that's just annoying the fact that every song restarts after a random amount of time makes this solution useless atm. 2. Using IPeng or Squeemote to control the built-in server is also an annoying experience. Apart from the above mentioned sluggishness an extra 15 seconds is also added for the UI in the IPhone app to update. (As you all know this is done in the blink of an eye when connected to a PC-server.) 3. The display is unreadable for me from 5 meters away (16ft) and because of this I have to resort to using the iPhone at all times to control the SBT. This is with a black background and the largest text size available. This is one area where the old SB3 classic VFD display outshine the new SBT imho. So is there hope for me? Is it likely that future revisions of the firmware or server will bring performance improvements? Are there solutions available that I'm unaware of? Do you think improvements to the readability and contrast of the display will come along? Thanks for any input you might have. //Jörgen 2. -- leadc4ge leadc4ge's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=38240 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78926 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Recommended decoder settings for best sound quality
After reading this thread, I've switched to PCM decoding and... what a difference! No placebo effect here; definitly an improvement. The sound is now richer and more 'solid sounding' The bass has improved significantly; drum kits now sound 'weighty' and solid. This Touch thingy is beginning to out-perform my (expensive) Naim CDX2 CD-player, which is worrying. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Avoid Spin down on a WD digital Passport, HOW?
This is very strange behaviour. A drive spinning down should not drop the connection, it's the dropped connection that is causing the built in server to quit. Does a Mac make a sound when a USB drive is plugged in and then removed like Windows does? Is the drive disconnecting on spin down on the Mac? Because they really aren't supposed to do that. -- funkstar '[project log] funkstars digital lifestyle' (http://forums.hexus.net/hexus-lifestyle/179882-project-log-funkstars-digital-lifestyle.html) - 'hexus.community' (http://forums.hexus.net/) *in use:* *1*x touch, *1*x boom, *2*x sb3, *1*x controller *in a box:* *1*x radio, *1*x (beta) controller, *1*x receiver, *1*x sb2 wired (silver), *1*x sb (black), *1*x slimp3 (with rear shield) if you have any others, let me know, i'm interested!! funkstar's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2335 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78858 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

OK, as it seems that nobody wants/can help, here is a way I found: - install Podcast Plugin - choose the plugins you want on SBS server (in the plugin's settings) - still on SBS server, add them to the favorites (I think it was in extras/podcasts) Then you can access the podcasts from the favorites menu on the SB Touch - even without having to change manually from SBS to mysqueezebox each time, incredible, that's ergonomy!
