I remember reading about the sheevaplug but I don't think I can find
one where I live. Other than that I have been running a server on my
main desktop computer for the SB3 classic - I guess I'll just keep it
running if there are not significant improvements implemented in the
SBS.

Yeah, I've read something about that. Is there a tutorial for making
that work? Meanwhile I'll keep hoping that any of the developers will
read this and implement a high contrast UI that's readable across the
room.

Thanks for the input!

The screen off screensaver just turns off the backlight, it doesn't
turn off the clock and sync sugnals to the display.

I could not hear any difference when the screen off screensaver kicked
in.

Most often this is a temporary issue. Factory reset shouldn't be required. Did

Are you still on the orginal software?
Hang in there - I think that 7.5.1 will soon be out with a bunch of
corrections.

I have noticed several users having problems scanning larger
collections.. 30.000++. As they describe it: using SQLite scan takes
forever.
But I just noticed yesterday that someone tried latest 7.6 with SQLite
for the 3-4 time and this time it worked like a charm.
So it appears that the latest SCAN checkins have had a effect ;-)

Hmm actually it was about pre-caching

It accepts hard drives as well. Make sure the drive has sufficient
power: some drives demand more than the USB specs allow them to do, so
if it takes external power it would be best to use it.

Also have to resist some urge...

For no compromise, try battery supply.
I don't know if there is something established to get 5V, either a
linear regulator, or 4*1.2V NiMH cells will get you close.

Only loosely related praise: I've measured the digital out of the SBT,
and can say it's the best I've ever seen. Crisp edges, perfectly
aligned and perfectly crossing each other at 50%, eye pattern can't be
more open. I can't measure jitter, but from the looks I can imagine it
is small.
I read the circuit has extra discrete flipflops to reclock the outputs.
Very nice!

Possible, anything is possible. But I don't expect it.

Its "TinySC" its not a real full blown implementation of SqueezeBoxCenter.

The Touch works great on a big thumb drive, and thats really mobile.

...Interesting, isn't it, how Logitech's website detailing the Touch's
feature states, and I quote verbatim:

"It doesn’t matter if your library includes 100 tracks or 100,000."

and

"You can access music and pictures stored on flash drives and memory
cards."

I've paid over half a grand for two SBTs, and so far, as the posts on
the forum reflect, my experiences have been mixed, leaving me largely
disappointed at the SBT's poor stability in normal use.

Time for Logitech to amend the website wording?

I live in the hope that FW updates beyond 7.6 (no substantial
improvement sadly from 7.5) render a better, more stable hardware.

[SlimDevices: Touch] internal server doesn't finish the scan

2010-05-18 Thread [IDC]Dragon

Poor little thing...

So far, it didn't manage to finish a full indexing run. I've tried it
"only" twice (because it takes forever, about 2 days). It is pretty
mistaken about its ETC, that time estimation gets heavily extended as
it goes along.

I did follow the instructions I saw here: power it up without disk, let
it settle for a while, connect the disk, watch only the progress and
don't touch it for the next days.

Symptom: The first quick run works fine, then it does a second, more
thorough run. That gets slower towards the end and finally the server
gets terminated. The screen shows a rather generic error message,
something like "local server was terminated because of a problem". The
disk is was spun down. Of course I wasn't around to see it happen, only
the result.

Setup: The disk is a 1TB 2.5" WD Passport, almost full with mp3 and
flac, about 100.000 files. Folders can be large, not with files, but
with subdirs, the largest has about 1200 subdirs.

Am I doing something unreasonable? I could imagine somebody with a 2TB
3.5" drive (or even a raid) full of low bitrate mp3s giving that
internal server way more stress than I do...
Is there some kind of diagnostic I can help with?

Thanks!

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] how to open up the squeezebox touch?

2010-05-18 Thread soundcheck

Now we gotta DUET II (respectively a stripped down Touch) at 3 times
the price of a Duet receiver.

I am asking myself - who is the actual winner in that game?

I am wondering if Logitech guys are reading this.

It must be frustrating for these guys - at least for the technicians.
I mean, this discussion sounds like pretty bad press to me.

Just to summarize what's being said over here - the message is:

"Take out everything what makes a Touch a Touch.
The community will be more than happy about it - at least the ones
who
look for great soundquality.
There is no way that you can go back once you're done with the
tweaks."

---

Dear Logitech.

Pleeease - build a DUET II - no frills. Half the size of the old DUET
should be possible. You might even skip Wifi (or built in a switch to
turn it completely off), since Wifi messes with the sound anyhow. Just
focus on sound quality. You might think of an I2S output. (I am not
asking for USB on purpose) . And 24/192. Stay with 5V on the DC side.
We'll take care on the linear supply. You might consider GBIT ethernet.

If the quality is good enough you'll be able to sell it at 199$ and
probably
come out with an even better margin than you'll see with the Touch.
For sure you'll have much less trouble compared to the Touch, with such
a product.

And for sure you'd turn the traditional "High-End-Audio" world upside
down, with such a product. ;)

TX for listening.

Best regards
SC

[SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch Question for Audiophiles

2010-05-18 Thread Flashgordon400

As a big believer and user of high quality power cords for the rest of
my HiFi / AV system, my question is, would a descent power corded

I presume this is in effect, the same as a CD transport as I am using

2010-05-18 Thread Chris61

Hi,

I decided to have a go at running 7.5.1 firmware to see if it fixed the
issue. I installed the latest 7.5.1 Squeezebox server on my windows PC,
connected the Touch to it which then allowed me to install Firmware
7.5.1 r877. I then reconnected to TinySC on the Touch and checked My
Apps - it seemed to work! However, after a few minutes the Touch told
me there was an 'update' available of 7.5.0 r8673. I couldn't find a
way to ignore this so I then had to begin the update. However, this
failed ("There was a problem installing this update. Please try again,

stuck with no working Touch. Is there any way I can skip the update
stage to keep running 7.5.1?

Thanks,

Chris.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Can the Touch replace a server?

2010-05-18 Thread JohnSwenson

There are a number of options, there is a VortexBox micro applience
which is based on the fitPC2 which has a builtin 500G drive, its about
6 watts for the whole thing and about the size of your hand, no fans
and the only sound is the drive itself. But its pretty expensive.

You can buy a fitPC2 and put VortexBox software on it yourself.

Another option is the Sheevaplug, (or the new Guruplug) $99 which has a
ethernet and USB jack. You load linux and SBS on an SD card and run the
plug off that. You do need an external USB drive for the music
library.

Of the two the fitPC2 is a more powerfull computer but costs several
times more than the plug. Either of these will be a much better
experience than using the Touch builtin server.

Remember that one of the advantages of the SBS design is that the
server can be anywhere on your network.

Mine is in a cabinet under the bar.

It could just as well be out in the utility room.

The real trick is efficient use of electricity to be green enough to
suit your values. But that gets to be complicated when you factor in
the environmental cost of building a new machine. Reuse may be much
better for the environment, even if it has higher electricity costs.

memory and a decent Atom processor. It does not need an optical drive
(I have a USB one I could plug in when necessary) and all my encoding
and ripping will be done on my much more powerful PC.

I use my NAS mainly as a backup drive and for hosting my photos, blog
and documents over the web. The SqueezeBox sever application (then
SqueezeServer) was originally on my PC until I discovered SSODS, and
later the Synology packaged version of SC/SBS.

The NAS will be staying for all its other functions. I just need a
better 24/7 host for SBS. Will take this query to the DIY forum.

Just a suggestion try ... Music/Genre/Artist/album/ I use general
categories like Rock, Classical, Dance, Country, Pop ... etc. It turns
out easier to find a particular album if you already know what your
looking for.

Gotta love the Touch but waiting for a better HDD support options.

What is the total size of your library? It may be that you need the
extra "power" of a dedicated server instead of the "TinySC" built into
the Touch? A dedicated server brings you additional benefit of being
able to run 3rd party plugins, as well as an overall "more responsive"
experience if you are overloading the TinySC capability. Examples of
additional plugins would be erlands "custom clock" which could allow
you to at least create some screens with higher contrast/larger fonts.

Are you running a separate Squeezebox Server on a computer ?
If not, that might be the problem.

The idea is that it should work to install with just the built-in
server in the Touch but I think there was a bug on MySB that resulted
in that it didn't work.

If this is the problem, the easiest solution is probably just to
install Squeezebox Server on a computer, install the applets and then
uninstall it or at least shut it down when you are finished.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Built-in server performance and display contrast issues.

2010-05-18 Thread iPhone

Hello and Welcome to the Forum.

As to using TinySC, it is a feature of the Touch and not the Touch's
primary purpose. The Touch's primary purpose is being a NMP. The other
things it does are features or gravy.

I have been using TinySC for about 9 months now. It does the job its
meant to do, takes the place of a Server when one is not available. We
should all remember that, TinySC takes the place of a dedicated server
when one is not available. TinySC is also limited. Few plugins (just
the ones built-in), no WebUI, playlist limited to 100, and so on. Due
to limited resources, the Touch UI is going to respond slower then when
using a dedicated server. This is not a 'problem' with Touch or even
TinySC, it is a reality of the CPU and limited memory can only do so
much so fast.

Have you thought about building a small Atom MB Vortexbox OS dedicated
Server or trying a SheevaPlug? Using a SheevPlug gets all the TinySC
missing items back for about the energy signature of having another
Touch running.

I'm semi-guessing here but I think the point is to not have an excessive
amount of files in a single folder when using FAT32 for filesystem as
this will get slow due to limitations in the file system. This should
not apply to NTFS-formatted harddrives.

Come to think of it. I wonder if the WD MyBook is NTFS-formatted from

It's a bit unsorted really, but every album is at least in it's own
subfolder so I'd say that every folder does not include more than 100
files and most of them only around 15 files.

I have now upgraded to the newest firmware 7.6. Upon some brief testing
the restarting of songs seems to have been cured. I have not heard any
skipping so far either. Let's hope and pray that these issues have been
fixed as they are indeed the most pressing ones.

The sluggishness as described above remains pretty much the same.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Built-in server performance and display contrast issues.

2010-05-18 Thread leadc4ge

Hi,

I had written a very long post outlining my experience with the touch
and some problems, but for some reason the forums decided to crap on
me.

So here goes again, in shorter version:

I primarily bought the SBT for the improved DAC's. The sound is easily
better than my SB3 classic on my > $10k amp and speaker system. And the
SB3 classic already performed admirably. So I'm happy with that, but
there are some problems

I bought an SB touch and also a WD MyBook 1,5 TB USB 2.0 external
harddrive to house my 310 GB (12400 song mostly FLAC) song collection
and to be played back via the built-in server.

1. The UI is sluggish (yes, it has completed the scanning). Navigating
albums/artist is somewhat OK but it takes 10 seconds for a song to
start playing after pushing play and another 5 seconds for the UI to
update. Although that's just annoying the fact that every song restarts
after a random amount of time makes this solution useless atm.

2. Using IPeng or Squeemote to control the built-in server is also an
annoying experience. Apart from the above mentioned sluggishness an
extra 15 seconds is also added for the UI in the IPhone app to update.
(As you all know this is done in the blink of an eye when connected to
a PC-server.)

3. The display is unreadable for me from 5 meters away (16ft) and
because of this I have to resort to using the iPhone at all times to
control the SBT. This is with a black background and the largest text
size available. This is one area where the old SB3 classic VFD display
outshine the new SBT imho.

So is there hope for me? Is it likely that future revisions of the
firmware or server will bring performance improvements? Are there
solutions available that I'm unaware of? Do you think improvements to
the readability and contrast of the display will come along? Thanks for
any input you might have.

//Jörgen

it can still be that it does that, which would be a bug in the drive fw
as it probably unmounts from the OS then and TinySC is suposed to shut
down when the drive is removed ?

After reading this thread, I've switched to PCM decoding and... what a
difference! No placebo effect here; definitly an improvement. The sound

significantly; drum kits now sound 'weighty' and solid. This Touch

which is worrying.

This is very strange behaviour.

A drive spinning down should not drop the connection, it's the dropped
connection that is causing the built in server to quit. Does a Mac make
a sound when a USB drive is plugged in and then removed like Windows
does?

Is the drive disconnecting on spin down on the Mac? Because they really
aren't supposed to do that.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Playing Podcasts / Menu Configuration

2010-05-18 Thread paf

OK, as it seems that nobody wants/can help, here is a way I found:

- install Podcast Plugin
- choose the plugins you want on SBS server (in the plugin's settings)
- still on SBS server, add them to the favorites (I think it was in
extras/podcasts)

Then you can access the podcasts from the favorites menu on the SB
Touch - even without having to change manually from SBS to mysqueezebox
each time, incredible, that's ergonomy!

I would be so glad if I knew where to find instructions on how to
achieve such elementary tasks without having to try for hours every
time...
