Well if you make sure your kit doesn't have multiple earths you avoid
ground loops.

As for 20' of speaker cable - depending on the speaker cable you can
run into other kinds of problems involving losing power in your speaker
cable.

Just depends how much of a purist you are and how much you are pumping
down the cable to the speakers.

I agree, the Squeezebox Radio and the Touch complement each other
perfectly. I have this exact setup and I'm thrilled when I can run
same or different streams of music around the house at the same time.

Also a few question about Touch an HD:

Is it necessary to let the power on for the harddisk?
Or can you switch it off every evening.
What happens when you want to play your music on the touch and you
are forgotten to switch the harddisk on?

No Music unless you switch to MySB.com for an Internet Stream. If one
is running TinySC and the HD is off there is no access to local
files/music.

I don't like the current behavior of when a HD goes to sleep or is
powered down with TinySC still running. And since one can't do anything
anyway, my suggestion is if one is going to save the few watts of
letting the HD sleep or be turned off, one might as well Eject the USB
Drive and unplug the Touch also.

When using TinySC, I just let the HD and Touch stay running. We are
talking less then 9 Watts for a Touch and USB powered USB Drive.

Wasn't that my suggestion if one doesn't want to use the less then 9
Watts by leaving it running, one might as well Eject the USB Drive and
unplug the Touch also? I guess from where I sit the 9 Watts is
basically nothing in the grand scheme of things and it is my opinion
that powering down and powering up (and the scanning that goes along
with that) is harder on the drive then just leaving it running 24/7 in
a stable state. Just my opinion YMMV.

The part I was talking about being unhappy with is how TinySC deals
with USB Drives that like to sleep, spin down, or are external powered
and power is removed and/or reapplied. That's all I was saying. Sorry
if that wasn't clear. I have no problem with ejecting the USb HD and
powering off every time in general. Its just that I use my Touch so
much, I feel its unnecessary wear and tear on the USB HD.

I use the Touch with attached HDD mostly on weekends and holidays so I
eject the HDD but leave the Touch running on mysqueezebox.com to listen
to internet radio. Once its attached I usually leave it connected for a
few days.

To re-attach the drive I first start TinySC and when it asks for a USB
or SD card I attach the drive. Re-scan doesn't take very long after
the initial full scan. Sometimes it's a hit and miss situation, at
times I have to reboot the Touch before re-attaching the drive. It
just takes a little patience but it works for me.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch needs server for various things?

2010-08-04 Thread Mars Warrior

Ok. Small update.

Everything seems to work since I switched explicitly to MySB. I do
understand that there might be some issues using MySB, but in my
situation, using a Touch only, it seems to work very good in
combination with the applets running on the Touch (Soma FM, Last.fm,
etc.).

Running a server 24/7 is no option for me. I find it just as 'weird' as
having your motor engine runing 24/7, or having the lights on 24/7 or
the heating on 24/7 for just a few hours of traveling, darkness and
cold.
As the server is also used for real-time transcoding movies(PS3, iPad),
it's a rather fast server with a relative high idle power consumption...
So the server is running on-demand using WOL over LAN WAN and that
saves me about €100/year on my electricity bill.

Since I'm using the Touch, I am considering using TinySC and a small
mobile harddisk in the future once TinySC / SC matured a bit and all
plug-ins have been made compatible with the new version.
The mentioned Sheeva/Guruplug combined with again a mobile harddisk is
also a viable solution, but I let them fix the powersupply overheating
issues first ;)

however connects fine to my network and strams internet radio without a

So in desperation I shut down the Touch, the cable modum and the

Nothing but trouble since day one...

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch needs server for various things?

2010-08-04 Thread aubuti

Glad to hear things are running better now. One thing, note that SomaFM,
Last.fm, etc are apps not applets. Apps are really services, and
even though the interface talks about installing them, they really
aren't installing anything. Applets, on the other hand, are things that
you actually install and run on the player. Applets only work with newer
players (SB Controller, Radio, and Touch), whereas apps also work with
older players like the Boom, SB3/Classic, etc. So there are plugins,
apps, and applets. Confused? You're not alone. Basically Logitech
decided to jump on the iThing bandwagon and get app-happy with what
are basically internet services for the SB.

Since you have your server running on-demand via WOL, I don't
understand why you presume a SB server would have to be on 24/7. SBS
can be run on-demand as well. In fact the SrvrPowerCtrl plugin has lots
of great options, including switching your players over to mysb.com
after a certain idle period, and then suspending/hibernating/shutting
down your server. Getting that to play nicely with your video serving
could take some work, but running a local music server does _not_ imply
it has to be on 24/7. Granted, you'll want to get your SBC WOL problem
sorted out first -- did you ever check if audio playback was enabled on
the SBC, and if it was, disabling it?

Oh, and if you're waiting for SBS plugins to be compatible with TinySBS
you'll be waiting a long time. The current lack of plugin support on
TinySBS was a conscious decision related to hardware limitations. I
doubt you'll ever see many (any?) plugins for TinySBS on the current
Touch hardware.

I'm using WHS as the OS and LightsOut to control suspending the server,
so I can't use the nice switching functionality of SrvrPowerCtrl I
guess...

And yes, I didn't imply that the server must be on 24/7, the Touch does
a nice job sending WOL to wake up the server, as does the Controller,
altough the Controller does it a bit to often in some cases

More inconsistent statements from Bruce (the owner of the studio that
HDTracks uses to prepare its downloadable music files):

We are extracting the direct DSD data stream. It does not enter the
analog domain.
http://www.computeraudiophile.com/content/SACD-sound-quality-vs-computer-audio-sound-quality

Any DSD processing that I do goes to the analog domain and then back
to DSD
http://www.whatsbestforum.com/showthread.php?1037-Upsampled-SACD-sp=10655

Bruce has zero credibility in my opinion based upon these inconsistent
statements.

This process of digital to analog to digital again results in
additional loss of fidelity.

And these are more details not revealed by HDTracks.

You certainly have had your share of odd issues. :(

There was just a recent thread in the Boom forum where someone had to
completely go through the entire Boom network setup every time they
unplugged their Boom and moved it to another part of their house,
connecting to the same WiFi network router. They even had to reenter
the SSID and encryption passphrase every time.

Why their setup did not allow the Boom to function properly and just
reconnect like most other Booms do is a mystery. My Boom always has,
just as my Touch has never had your issues. There are just too many
variables.

Let's hope all is well after your network reboot reconfiguration.
