[SlimDevices: Touch] Using Squeezebox Touch with External DAC
Hi Can an external DAC be used with the Touch? In other words, is there a digital out? And if there is, will the Touch pass through wireless to the digital out? I really like the Touch concept, but the DAC in it isn't as good as the one I had been using and I'd like the best of both worlds... Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Wireless vs Ethernet. Any sound quality differences?
In a nutshell 1 there is no rational reason why wi fi cannot stream data as accurately as a wired connection 2 some people think they can hear a difference in the music played by the different routes through a Touch though. 3 the explanation posited seems to be that the wifi receiver (and possibly the processor) has to try very hard and that this might make the touch handle the wireless stream worse than wired ethernet stream even if the two streams are themselves identical 4 early generation wifi suffered from unreliability and drop out which lead to the standard mantra being that you shouldn't use wifi for high quality audio. 5 some people don't hear any difference and attribute the suggestion that there is a difference to expectation bias. (Do these big black speakers sound a) dark, b) bright?) 6 similar considerations apply to a whole raft of other possible tweaks (offboard flac conversion, turning off extraneous processor functions etc and possibly to others such as turning off analogue/digital outs). Personally I listen over wifi because I can't be bothered to re-wire, and have separate mains spurs powering the hifi so I doubt powerline will work. If i go to the trouble of installing cat 5e throughout my house I probably not bother to A/B afterwards anyway because it will be too late by then. By my guess even if wired is better a. you could reproduce the same result by having a second wireless router thingy wired to the touch. I may try this. b. most people who currently strongly prefer wired connection would not like that idea at all for a variety of reasons which will range from metaphysics to quantum field theory and all of which may be true. Basically if you don't already know what you think before listening I bet you will still be unsure after. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Connecting Squeezebox touch to audio system
There are only two ways to run local files with the Touch. One is using an attached USB drive and running TinySC but this limits what one can do. The other is by having a PC/NAS/Server running that has SBS on it. I personally don't care for the NAS solution as it to can have limitations. I think it costs less just to build/buy and Atom based dedicated Music Server. One has all the features this way and plenty of horsepower and resources to run SBS. -- iPhone *iPhone* Media Room: Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono's, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, Vandersteen Speakers: Quatro Wood Mains, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Video: Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1, Vandersteen V2W Subwoofer Living Room: Duet, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Kitchen: Squeezebox BOOM Bedroom: Squeezebox BOOM Bathroom: Squeezebox Radio Ford Thunderbird: Duet, Mac Mini Ford Expedition: SB Touch, USB drive iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82049 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

I have always found it as bit odd that it only steps down 240VAC to 24 VAC, as I would have assumed that the point of an external PSU would be to keep to AC/DC conversion outboard. It made me wonder whether it really made that much difference. I did pay for a full mod of sorts, but I was told that an ealier modding attempt had made it impossible to fit their normal regulators. They used something else which may or may not have been quite as good. As a matter of interest did they do anyhtign to your X 10D/ Perhaps i should send them theat, although it occurred to me that the better the op amps in the DAC the more doubtful the X10D would become. I am very interests in the Digital room corection, and I suspect that my next step might be to try out inguz. I don't know how good that is relative to the TacT system, but i can see the sense in dealing with the whole thing in software before sending it to the DAC. At the moment though I am using a QNAP NAS which runs squeezeserver fine but would not have the horsepower for DRC. Have you read the stereophile Oct review of the touch yet. I think the measurements are interesting. I may start a separate post on this invting more technical sorts to comment on what conclusions we can draw. The X-10d was rebuilt with new diodes, caps etc. Sounds quicker (hard to explain). The x-10 magic comes from the nuvistor valves. The DAC mod was way more important. The X-PSU is just a very nice multi-secondary toriodal transformer in a pretty box. It probably has more of a benefit to the x-head amp than anything else.. It is in fact optimal to do the AC-DC conversion in the DAC - you do not want the regs a long way away from the circuit that uses the DC for several reasons. -- Phil Leigh You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it ain't what you'd call minimal... [SlimDevices: Touch] Some (Preliminary) Comments on Sound Quality
The main reason why I bought the SBT was the promise of better sound via 96/24 files. After listening for a few days, here are my preliminary comments (all with the SBT's digital out into the Cambridge Azur DAC): * 1. Wireless vs. USB Memory Stick*: To my surprise, (since USB uses SBS on the Touch rather than on the computer), USB stick sounds better. More natural timbres, more detail. (Though my upstairs network is hard wired, I don't plan to run ethernet to the downstairs listening room.) *2. The same CD vs. ripped to 44/16 vs. downloaded 96/24*. The CD sounds a bit more delicate than the 44/16 rip, but the latter has more body and presence. Not necessarily better, but different in an engaging sort of way. The downloaded 96/24 version, perhaps not surprisingly, offers more air and a more natural overall presentation than the other two versions; more refined; truly excellent dynamics and clarity. On the other hand he does have kind of a pet peeve about audiophiles going by other people's opinions rather than using their own ears. For some reason or other your initial post seemed to have hit he hot button. The Touch's analog outputs are really quite good and the Touch sounds better than many stand alone CD players and external DACs. I believe that what Phil was trying to say is that only by listening to and comparing both the sound of Touch's analog output versus the sound of the Touch feeding an external DAC can one decide which configuration sounds best. I have my Touch's digital output connected to the DAC built into my Headroom Desktop amp only because I already owned the Headroom amp prior to purchasing the Touch and I like the sound of Headroom amp. So if you already own a good external DAC whose sound you are happy with, by all means use it conjunction with the Touch's digital outputs and enjoy the music. Give me a day or two and I'll post the instructions. There are some caveats, its NOT plug ang and play, if you make the file modification to use a USB DAC you can't get output from any other output, it will JUST play to the USB DAC. You also loose the UI sounds (beeps etc when you touch the screen). You cannot use a USB DAC that requires a custom driver, it must be one that can work with a generic USB driver. If you can live with these it works well. And I know of only two companies that are even remotely dealing properly with the issues. And if one can afford their DAC, one can afford to buy different equipment so one doesn't have to depend on the USB for digital output. I agree with iPhone. Maybe I somehow missed it but when did a USB connection become the most desirable one? Last thing I recall was reading about what big pain in the neck USB connections where and how much better it was to transmit the data via a network connection, something about jitter and bit perfect but who knows. All my flac files sit on a 2tb Buffalo Linkstation Pro and I'm thinking that installing SBS on that may save the need to have the current PC running SBS switched on when listening to music? -- Steve W Steve W's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=40470 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82065 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Possible to install SBS on Buffalo Linkstation?
I did use the Buffalo Linkstation quite a while for Squeezebox Server. But its very slow and it doesn't make much fun (also it's quite some fiddling to get it working). On the 3rd party hardware forum there are plenty of threads and tutorials to install SBS on a Linkstation. In the meantime I switched to a SheevaPlug. Its a lot more powerful than the linkstation, installation is easy too (there are also some threads about it here). You can access all you mp3s on the LinkStation of course. -- bluegaspode Big Screen for great Boxes available now at your AppStore: *'Squeezebox + iPad = SqueezePad ' (www.squeezepad.com) *! [SlimDevices: Touch] Removing duplicates of tracks in 1 album?
For some reason the tracks listed under one of my albums in my music library has 2 entries for each track. On investigation it turns out that the duplicates are pointing at the same location but via my network rather than via my computer as an attached drive (my NAS appears under both Network and Computer). So far I Have tried rescanning Music Library. Uninstalling SBS, reinstalling and then rescanning. Deleting the offending folder, rescanning (it is removed from the music list on SBS), then putting the folder back and rescanning - it reappeared but with the duplicate entries. So any other way of getting rid of the duplicate tracks? -- Steve W Steve W's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=40470 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82066 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

ralphpnj;577275 Wrote: I agree with iPhone. Maybe I somehow missed it but when did a USB connection become the most desirable one? Last thing I recall was reading about what big pain in the neck USB connections where and how much better it was to transmit the data via a network connection, something about jitter and bit perfect but who knows. My feeling is that JS did it just to see if it could be done and in an honest effort to explore all possible ways of connecting a Touch. Sometime imbetween stereophile getting excitable about that ayre dac, dcs adding a USB input and KR saying in his touch review that via the USB out to the ayre it gave the best digital 2 channel sound he had heard, I'm guessing. -- adamdea adamdea's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=37603 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82040 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
