Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Multiple songs generated in a playlist
I will take your advice and re-rip the same albums very carefully, using FLAC. As an aside, I was having a problem with the mediasmart collector finding the files, since I had them on an external hard drive to a PC. I discovered that the server finds them more easily on the system hard drive. It is possible that some of the albums actually resided in more than one location. That may have resulted in a problem. The scan done by squeezebox server would have found an album in more than one sub folder on the ex495 music folder. -- tspyder tspyder's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=41771 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=83544 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Multiple songs generated in a playlist
Since you are just getting started, an important bit of advice is to rip to FLAC files instead of WAV. The FLAC files preserve the full audio quality of WAV, but take up much less disk space and much less network bandwidth. More importantly, FLAC has excellent support for metadata (tags), whereas there is no tagging standard for WAV. You need good metadata/tags to really leverage the SB system, and dBpoweramp is an excellent tool for fetching the tag information and writing it to FLAC files. If you don't have cue sheets then don't worry about them. Most users don't use them and are fine without them. As for your original problem, that's an odd one. I expect it's something wrong with the way you are ripping, but it's hard to say from the info provided. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=83544 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Multiple songs generated in a playlist
Further review of albums loaded in indicates that not all of them result in the extra songs duplication in the playlist, and that when they do duplicate, all of them, including the last one, are duplicated. (Remember, I am just beginning to experiment with this equipment and have only loaded down about 6 cd's so far.) I do have the volume set to 100 on the Touch. I am ripping the cds using Dbpoweramp and creating wav files. I do not have any playlists previously created. I have simply been using the squeezebox software to pick the albums and then saving the list on the HP. Firewall, you did open port 3483 tcp and udp and port 9000 tcp. 3483 is the server discovery among other-things here the players broacast their presence and the server could pick them up . This requires that every is on the same network wich it usually is on most peoples network. There is a connect to remote server kind of setting in the Touch where one can specifically type in the ip of a server, if you got a complicated network and this does not work. Switching between local sbs and mysb.com is not necessary sbs has settings for you mysb.com creds so everything including apps and radio can be done from your local server with better performance. The "switch to mysqueezebox com" setting can be moved up to the top menu. It's lurking in the settings > advanced > networking ? The Tiny SBS is not designed to look at a network share. Under some circumstances it can be done, but its not easy. Its WAY better to run SBS on the external box which is also serving up files to other computers. This works very well and gives you the full functionality of SBS. This is what vortexbox does, its a linux server that has SBS and samba for sharing any files on the box with other computers. You can set it up as a video server as well. It also has a DLNA server. If you want something really small and silent but still quite powerful a FitPC2 running vortexbox software is great. The cheapest way to do this is with a sheevaplug and squeezeplug software, but I don't think it comes out of the box setup as a general purpose file server, but setting it up to do so is not very difficult (WAY easier than getting TinySBS to read a network share) John S. -- JohnSwenson JohnSwenson's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5974 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82070 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

You are right, I have not heard this particular one, but I have built over thirty DACs with many different DAC chips, IV and output stage topologies. I have also heard many DACs that I have not built myself with even wider set of components and topologies. From all this I have a fairly good set of correlations as to what things are important and what works well together. >From what I can see on the net and read from people that have worked with this DAC I see nothing that would indicate it would sound better than a Touch with the PS I mentioned, configured properly, especially if you bypass the output caps. Note I said there is a low probability it will sound better than the properly setup Touch. It might still be an incredibly great sounding DAC that puts a well setup Touch to shame, but I really doubt it. [SlimDevices: Touch] Multiple songs generated in a playlist
I have just installed a Touch and have the squeezebox server running on an HP ex495 server. Therefore i am just experimenting and attempting to become familiar with the set up. In general all is working fine except for two items. 1) When the squeezebox software scans my music files it generates what appears to be a proper list of albums. Looking at he songs in those albums at that point shows one entry for each song on the album, as expected. When the album is selected to be played, the playlist now shows 3 entries for each song. They all play consecutively when that playlist is used. I can delete the extra entries, but that is a nuisance. Also, the last song from any given album appears only once. What am I doing wrong? 2) The sound level of the songs are much lower than what is experienced when the same cd's are played on a standard cd player. On my amp, a level of about 12 would require a setting of 2 to 25 to achieve the same volume. -- tspyder tspyder's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=41771 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=83544 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Thank you again, toby10. Late last night, well after I had posted my last note, I got it to work. On yet another PC. So, it must have been the firewall/anti virus software on the first two PCs. But even when I got the Touch to connect to the SBS it was kind of iffy. The SBS showed up on the display of the Touch, and I could then change the library; I was not able to "select" the Touch from the SBS web browser. Add me to the A5 recommendation. Touch + A5's is a killer and versatile combination. A5's MSRP is $349, regularly available for $299, I got mine for $249. Sonos wants $399 for their player/speaker combo. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch and readynas
I have a ReadyNas duo which I bought hoping to be able to run squeeze center. It's not just the web interface that's slow - it's that handling of album art is painful (6hrs+ for a small 400 album collection). I use it now as an excellent file server and bought the little atom powered Revo box to act as the media server (which it does superbly - same rescan in 30 mins). I recently set up a system at my girlfriends where I had a readyNas set up and added a small barebone atom server, with cheap 32G SSD and 2Gig of memory for under $200 from NewEgg - I intalled Vortexbox onto this and run it headless. The performance is astonishing and I can leave it unattended for weeks (connected to a UPS) and its simplified my maintenance of this system completely. The ReadyNas is underpowered as a lot of floating point calculations are needed for the artwork rescaling I believe - so you need a better chip if you want this to be handled well - maybe the new atom based RedyNas duo that is about to be launched will have the power - certainly looks that way, but I don't know the price. -- linvale Squeezcenter running on ACER R1600 Windows XP Fileserver ReadyNAS Duo Main Listening Transporter / Controller Kitchen : SB3 Bedroom : Boom Bath : SBRadio Study: Duo linvale's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22828 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=83521 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Ive has a ReadyNAS NV+ before running SBS, two SB3s and one Boom. I used iPeng remote as well. The NV+ is comparable to the DUO performance wise. The NV+ does fine when only using the SBs to stream music. Once you ask a bit more, such as using the iPeng remote, things became quite slow. Also iPeng is quite slow on the NV+. I decided to sell my NV+ and I bought an NVX instead. The difference is huge. Performance with the NVX is top notch. Well I would certainly endorse the Audioengine's - I am happily listening to my A5s no,w but I do have a sub connected - so the A2s may be a better choice for full frequency(and you will be getting a sound most audiophiles recognise as good value for money). Of course the boom or radio sound great in non audiophile locations. It's also fairly easy to get an inexpensive amp and tuck it away to power a whole range of good value bookshelves. I've always found when it comes to making my girlfriend happy with this type of product simplicity of interface (it should just work), good looks (ie be unobtrusive) and that sound quality comes last (thinking about it - isn't that how girls pick their men on the whole?). Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Is it possible to synchronize playback between two Touch boxes?
Thanks linvale Now, for me, comes the quest to find a decent pair of powered speakers for the "other zones" where amplification without any ability to EQ is acceptable. It's in these non-audiophile locations that price /performance of products like the Sonos are hard for the Touch to compete with, and I definitely don't want a mixed setup for WAF and control purposes. You could simply use a longer USB cable between Touch and USB drive, then you can better hide the drive. I've had SBS on a ReadyNAS Duo controlled via iPeng for over an year now. SB devices on wifi and the NAS wired to the wireless router. The performance is quite decent, but occasionally it becomes slightly unresponsive. For example starting or skipping a song might take 10 seconds. I have no problems playing an album uninterrupted. iPeng certainly feels faster than the web interface. I think this is because iPeng caches album/track/artwork. In general things have been noticeably faster since upgrading from SBS 7.4 to 7.5.x. -- gmudunuri Main rig: SB Touch -> PS Audio DL III (Cullen IV modified) -> PS Audio Trio C-100 (Cullen III modified) --> Dunlavy Aletha full range speakers. Still, what's so awfull about using DHCP Reservation then? When "new" users experience network problem some people advice them to go for static IP's and I think it's totally crazy advice. Sometimes I think either the people giving the advice or the those taking it don't understand the difference between "static IP vs DHCP reservation". Static IP's are NOT needed for a squeezebox setup and regular users should stay away from this. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch and readynas
I can only say that I bought the readynas duo specifically for storing music and running SbS to feed several SB players. After a few weeks it was obvious that it was way too painful to use ANY interface for browsing or selecting music. I do have about 60,000 tracks. So I gave up on the readynas. I just use if for some backup file storage now. I initially just moved over to an old laptop and used it for running SbS. It was fast, but noisy and used lots of power. the vortexbox appliance uses less power, is fairly quiet, and is rock solid as a server. Thanks for the info. I do read conflicting reports about the readynas speed and streaming to duo/touch. I don't care if the web ui is slow (which apparently it is), or indeed syncing the whole music database 10 times a day :-))) Simply; find an album, play the track. Is a duo running slim capable of doing that in a usable form i.e. responsive? I know thats slightly subjective; but you can see that essentially 'speed' for me is only in finding an album and playing it. The ipeng is simply an APP that runs on an iphone or itouch for controlling a SB player (like a SB touch). The ipeng by itself is not useful; you still need a SB player. The vortexbox is basically a headless computer running linux and running SbS. It is fast and efficient. Mine has 6TB of disk space so the files are on the Vortexbox itself. Vortexbox is free (just a software installation). You can install it on almost any old computer you have around. You could also go with the sheevaplug approach have it use the files that are on your readynas. Sheevaplug runs the SbS software (and much better than a readynas duo, which is too underpowered), but files still stored on readynas. re dnla. Not that familiar with it, but I recall from other threads that SbS doesn't currently work with dnla. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch with USB drive : mastering TinySB
Hello, I find that running a NAS just for the Touch is too much hassle and is also energy hungry. However, the problem is that I would also like to get access to the USB hard drive where is my music from other device or computer. And, also, the hard drive connected to my touch is not very beautiful and looks crappy in my bedroom. Thus, I think that the best way is to have the hard drive somewhere activated as a network drive. Some tiny routers/modems running on Linux have a usb plug and enable to share the hard drive connected to it. As we are mastering the command line in ssh on the touch, I would like to know if you have a solution to prompt the TinySB to look into a network drive instead of the USB drive. Is there a file that I can change to tell this TinySB to have a look at \\livebox\music. -- zub zub's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=41764 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82070 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Which "ready NAS" there is a lot of models ? from glacially slow to quite good ? :) Note the Squeezeboxserver 7.5.x or better is needed (sugest 7.5.2 official is 7.5.1). I also recommend you to try the search functions this is a very popular question . http://forums.slimdevices.com/search.php "Slow" is very personal and subjective and can depend on file formats size of collection, album artwork plugins etc. It is usually the web-UI that takes the largest performance hit. With a Touch it is handling of large playlists and updating artwork on screens that will suffer most in my experience . Well, it works fine if something (like your suspected router) prevents the player from seeing the server. ;) Example: I've never experienced what you are seeing. If SBS is running my players always find it. Never have problems switching between SBS and MySB. Any chance your router is an Apple product? Certain Apple routers create a "guest" connection for new devices. This essentially places the "guest" device on a separate network. In this case your SBS server is on network 1, but your Touch is on network 2.
