[SlimDevices: Touch] Possible solution for stuttering FLAC 24/96

2011-12-14 Thread sendermen

Hi!
I started encountering more and more dropouts (rebuffering every minute
or so) during FLAC playback, while FLAC playback used to be perfect.

Ejecting my HD, connecting it to a PC and defragmenting and 'deep
optimising' using Auslogics Disk Defragmenter completely fixed my
problem.

Perhaps it also works for you if this problem is nagging you?

How about buying an older used laptop for $50? Doesn't even need to
have a WiFi card, just ethernet.
Then load the VB software for free. Or just keep that laptop's OS like
WinXP and run the full LMS server. Now you have an actual PC instead a
limited NAS.
Can't get any more budget than that. ;)

great feature the SB3 had. Actually this great feature was provided by a
plugin called Auto Dim Display. This plugin obviously doesn't work for
the Touch and Radio due to their different OS.
I like to darken the display completely between a certain time period
(night time). In the morning the display comes to live again. Is there
any similar applet or patch for the Touch?

Do you just want it to be black or do you want it to be darker ?

There is at least:
- Screen Switcher applet which allows to you configure different screen
savers for different time of the day
- Custom Clock which allows you to design your own clock screen saver,
for example one with a darker color of the text.

Both are commercial, so you will also need License Manager applet and a
license for them, but you can apply for a free 30 day license through
License Manager plugin in SBS to evaluate if it works as you like.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] safely adding to a playlist

2011-12-14 Thread sendermen

I try not to use the Touch for editing playlists.
I use Foobar in combination with some batch scripts to reset the
filename paths. Currently, there are 5 playlists in my Touch, because
it's too worksome.

It would be so great if Logitech took this serious: a good realtime
playlist solution is something you really need in the Touch. Currently
it's crippled and non-intuitive. And it's driving my girlfriend ma.
:D

What I want: whenever you hear a song, you are able to add it to a
specific playlist that is not active. So in random song mode, when you
hear a great groovy song you are able to add the current song to your
playlist funkyjazz.

Imo the players are only an extension of the server (the old players

Also to use Touch as a server you need an external drive, put that
money towards a server .

One of the few ways to get a usable server cheaper than the Touch is

it migth seem contradictory that we all say that any old clunker can

Most decent NAS'es have x86 proc. these days. There's a good change
that these NAS'es have more proc power than an old retired laptop you
buy for $50.

Besides that, a NAS is a setup and forget kind of device. No OS patches
or service packs to install every week or so.

There is also power considerations. NAS'es are built to run 24/7 and
have power tweaking settings. The old laptop will probably consume a
lot more power.

If you don't like that server:Squeezebox cost ratio then the solution
is simple: you need to get more Squeezeboxes! :-)

Seriously though, the real beauty of the Squeezebox system (and similar
systems such as Sonos) comes when start spreading them around the
house/flat, so you have full access to your music collection, online

LOL!!! I already have a SB Radio for over two years now, and my SB
Touch is scheduled to come tomorrow (Thursday).

I actually worked on your earlier suggestion yesterday: I installed my
SB server on my old laptop, opened iTunes on it, pointing it to my
Apple Lossless file on my NAS. It worked and I was able to access my
music on that machine's itunes. I then scanned/pointed SB Server
software to NAS through Library tab/Media source, and did a rescan
through advanced tab. I checked out my SB Radio and my music on NAS
was all there. I played a few tracks off it with no problems.
Logically, this setup should work on my new SB Touch when it arrives
tomorrow. I will keep you updated.

Those memory chips are pin compatible, so it was trivial to double the
memory without having to redesign the PCB motherboard. The hard part is
to reprogram the boot loader and Linux platform with the new memory
configuration.

2011-12-14 Thread jean2

Mnyb;676538 Wrote:

Are they using the most effective programming methods to utilize this
 hardware ?

It's a tradeoff, over-optimising the software is not always the best
strategy. I actually think they are using the most effective
programming methods for the SqueezeBox product line.

If you have enough engineering resources and time, sure, you can code
everything in assembly language on the bare metal and be able to fit
everything into ridiculously low CPU and memory footprint.

However, in the real world, you want to ship in a short amount of time
(time to market) with limited software resources (development team,
testing team). So, you use a lot of existing software packages (Linux,
Samba...) and program in a high level language (Perl, Python), both
using more hardware resources (CPU, memory, network).

Depending on the expected volume and price point, you will put the
cursor at a different point. If your volume is very high, you can
afford more engineering (large software development team) and therefore
reduce the hardware cost. If your volume is lower, you want to contain
the engineering cost and have to accept a higher hardware cost.

At the end of the day, your widget cost depend on the hardware cost
(BOM), engineering cost and support/return cost. And your sale price
depend on the perceived customer value (supported features). You need
to strike the right balance between all those parameters, and can't
optimise a single parameter without understanding the impact on the
other parameters.

And you also have to remember that the cost of many hardware components
goes down over the lifetime of the product (CPU, memory for example),
and you have to take that into your calculations. This is the reason
why Logitech has been able to reduce the price point from $300 at
launch to around $230 today. Actually, I believe that Logitech is
taking some risks in the long term in letting the price point on the
Touch erodes.

Another example of this tradeoff : for 7.6.0, it looks like Logitech
optimised a bit too much the release/testing engineering ;-)

And the final hardware beta testing was finished a bit before that
since the mass production had to start so the units were ready to be
shipped mid-2009.

And on top of this, the work to make the built-in server run on the
Touch had barely been started at that time, so I'm not sure Logitech
really knew how much memory it would require after the optimization.

There are always two types of updates - the server software, and then
the Touch.

If you have the latest server then the Touch probably needs new
firmware. If it updates, then the two will be in sync. Switching off

2011-12-14 Thread sc53

I am trying to increase the signal strength for my Touch by connecting
it via ethernet cable to a new wireless repeater I just bought. I set
up the repeater fine on my iMac and it found my home network and said I
could now unplug it and start using it in other rooms of my house. So I
took it downstairs and plugged it into the Touch via ethernet cable. I
then tried to select wired network from Settings page on the Touch
but no wired network is ever found. What am I doing wrong? I can still
connect wirelessly to my home network but the Touch won't recognize any
wired connection to this repeater. Damn!

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] some cue file and flac no longer play in Music Folder

2011-12-14 Thread lovemov

Happily downloaded new 7.7.1 today.

Sadly found out the bug is still there.

What a waste! Don't know what's in Logitech's brain. New features
aren't important, but better stable existing user experience is more
important!!!

There is a simple workaround: don't browse by music folder.

My first thought would be to try a different Ethernet cable. If that
does not work, try connecting a laptop or some other device and see if
the repeater gets connected to it. If not, the repeater may be faulty.

Good luck!

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Empty itunes playlists on SB Touch after library change

2011-12-14 Thread NineOneOne

There is a place in the online squeeze server setup to specify the file
location for the ITunes playlist info (.xml file if I remember right).
I've had your problem before and telling squeeze server where to find
the playlist info fixed it. Good luck!

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Software updates

But when I switch (on the Touch screen) to mySqueezebox.com it goes
straight to 'a new update is available' screen.
How can I stop this please?
You can't, because the player firmware version must match the server
software version. So if you are running an old SBS and switch to MySB
it will prompt you to update, and if you switch back to your local
server it will probably prompt you again to revert to the old firmware.
I don't know what happens if you reject the update, the player may or
may not work with a mismatched firmware depending on the changes that
have been made.

Just as an idea, would it be possible to use the Touch's built-in
server instead of connecting to MySB even if there is no USB drive
attached?
