Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Toslink's optical vs rca digital cable
Have recent direct hopefully helpful experience with this, albeit I own a Transporter not a Touch. Had read that BNC was the best digital connection with the Transporter, so i decided to go with that. Also read that digital is digital, so go with a decent "non nonsense" cable - went with Bluejeans BNC cable. Then... A friend of mine brought over a Lifatec Silflex optical cable and it sounded BETTER than the Bluejeans BNC cable. *Conclusion: *Digital is NOT just 1's and 0's and all cables are not the same. Then... I bought a Black Cat Silverstar 75! cable as still had it in the back of my mind that Sean Adams had said BNC is best. *Result: *Subjectively, the Black Cat cable BLEW AWAY both the Bluejeans BNC and the Lifatec glass optical. Much better sounding, particularly in the top end where everything had rock solid focus and the sense of timing (read musicality...) was noticeably better. A far better sense of musicians playing off one another, instruments sounded more how they should, as well as much improved timbre and sense of the room acoustic. Seriously, its a much better cable and made my Transporter sound better than ever. In fact I didn't know it could do quite what it could...its awesome. Hopefully some helpful first hand experience. :) Gazjam's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18604 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104602 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

I'm, guessing the EDO process happens and is output via USB to the DAc before SOX has a chance to downsample. Would this seem right? Maybe it is better, maybe it does nothing at all, maybe it is even worse. After thirty some years in the RF and microwave business I've come to not accept anything till it can be shown to work. The output of a power supply should be very easy to measure. I do have to be skeptical about the benefits of a power supply. I work on instruments that have dynamic ranges far beyond that of the human ear. They are packed full of oscillators, clocks and numerous switching power supplies. We also use external switching power supplies to run them. But I'm open to the idea. My one experiment with a linear supply on SB yielded nothing more than a lot of wasted electricity and money. My two cents worth. Fair point well made, its good to be sceptical. In general principle your experience has taught you to be sceptical and thats good, me too. Specifically though - and not trying to be funny - but how does the instruments you work on (that are outside the range of human hearing)have any bearing on audio equipment? :) The forum here has been round this roundabout a million times though, and I don't want to go down this argument - rather get on with my life. Going by who designed it, trust me, I'm sure this supply measures fantastic. I've done more than one experiment with linear supplies actually and had good and bad results. The point is they CAN MAKE WHAT THEY ARE CONNECTED TO SOUND DIFFERENT. A cheapie I tried (Strontionics I think?) buzzed like a bee, heated the room up and sounded worse than the stock supply. ..and that was on my SB3. SO not all linear supplies (like switchers) are not equal. I'm a skeptic on a tight budget so colour me sceptical about such things. Thing is, this supply HAS been shown to work...it made my digital source sound a helluva lot more involving, musical and enjoyable than before. How do you measure that? ;) I don't know what a power supply sounds like and I dont care to honestly. :) Its the final result that comes out my speakers and hits my ears that matters and this made that experience a whole lot better. I mentioned that it made my hifi addictive again... its about musical enjoyment and its better becasue of this psu. In my book thats it being shown to work. As I said, I'm not trying to justify anything or get drawn into debate, just passing on my experience. -- Gazjam Gazjam's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18604 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=90742 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

I have no detailed info on the Touchs design re internal suplies but if it is similar to SB3 the incomming 5v gets transformed to different other voltages by internal switch-mode supplies anyway. There is a quite real possibility that the switch-mode wallvart can disturb other components, an indirect influence . Many audiophiles own very strange equipment it sensitivity to such things can vary greatly. Then this switch vs linear thing is bogus anyway. there are good and bad powersupplies of both kinds . The original slimdevices SB3 220v Eu supply was very shoddy it even have a burning smell around it ;) and was very feeble and cheap ? Linn and Meridian uses switch-mode supply and are not regarded as shoddy designs So their we have the weakness of our discussions OP may have had (or not) some sucess with his PS he thinks so , he shares his experience. We can read and take notes if we ourselfs should want to get another supply. But from this none can really conclude if it works or not it is especially impossible to tranfer to our own situations . I use an CIA 5v supply I used with my SB3 I let it be in the hifi rack when i got my Touch (my SB3 uses the Touch PS ) Can I recommend it ? I don't know, it is not bad that's what I can be certain of and it does transfer to you, it would be not bad for you too. Technically it looks solid. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] linear power supplies, done right can improve the Touch.
Not saying its not relevant, I'm just trying to suggest that its not all about measurements... the ear/brain/enjoyment thing is harder to quantify. Was just passing on my experience which was NOT a subtle improvement...something or a combination of somethings are improving the overall final sound quality. The stock Touch supply is not supposed to inject a lot of noise into the mains so I'm not sure its just a case of removing the last of the switchers from my system... As someone said, try or don't try, whatever works. There are of course other psu's out there for the Touch, some cheaper some WAY more expensive. To me £150 GBP is about my limit of diminishing returns. I try to buy sensible, not the cheapest but dont throw money at something just because its high end and SUPPOSED to be better. If I hear it for myself and its value for money - its a bargain. That, for me...works. Other folk may want to spend less, more or nothing at all. All I'm saying is that this wasn't a subtle improvement over the Stock supply and musical enjoyment is a lot better. Enough free advertising, its good, end of. :) -- Gazjam Gazjam's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18604 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=90742 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

[SlimDevices: Touch] linear power supplies, done right can improve the Touch.
Been listening to something over the last couple of days, knew the SB3 supply could be improved on, but the stock Touch switcher? Naa. uhm..yes it can. Clean linear power supply can do it. Dont groan.. :) I wouldn't put pen to paper if it wasn't something special. What I'm using is a two box, linear psu custom designed by someone who knows his onions... A word from the designer... Why a two box solution? Well, the idea came from the fact that its a bit silly having a regulator thats several foot from the load its supplying. Just looking at the voltage across the load you can see the regulator its trying to control it at the end of a long stick. So the idea was to try and get the regulator as close as possible to the load. And after that thought, given that I have more control over both sides of the regulator, I thought something a bit more interesting than a stock three pin reg would be called for. The regulator in the little box isn't discrete as such because it uses a low noise op amp as a error amp and a descret mosfet to control the output. I can also pack some paralleled caps in there to try and get closert to a fast responding small regulator. First stage regulator and transformer out the way, final high speed low noise regulator close to the load. Just looking how the load voltage varies shows that you get at least a order of magnitude closer regulator than using a three pin regulator on the end of a wire. Common sense electrical engineering? I'm sure it measures well too... (I have no commercial affiliation with the product or its designer, just had a chance to hear an early example of it. I'm happy to recommend it. -- Gazjam Gazjam's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18604 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=90742 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Thanks Phil, nice one. very clear explaination, you done this before? ;) Phil Leigh;584445 Wrote: Gaz, The Touch CAN output 88.2 in the following circumstances: 1) you are playing a 176.4 file - it will be downsampled by SOX to 88.2 assuming you haven't fiddled with the FLAC Transcode entry in convert.conf 2) You have set convert.conf to force EVERYTHING to 88.2 3) You are playing an 88.2 file and have not altered your convert.conf settings Upsampling on the Touch is a waste of time with MOST Dacs IME. Many recent dacs upsample internally anyway via ASRC these days - even if you feed them high sample rates... There are only a handful of DACs that would theoretically benefit - ones with no internal upsampling. The way that the SBS code works is that it gives you two choices: 1) the basic convert.conf entry which is the FLC FLC * entry. This does nothing to any files that are 96k or less for the Touch. I HAVE AMANDED MY CUSTOM-CONVERT.CONF AND DELETED THE TRANSCODE ENTRY AND HAVE AMENDED THE FLAC FLAC ENTRY TO : FLC FLC * * # FT:{START=--SKIP=%T}U:{END=--UNTIL=%V} [FLAC] -DC --TOTALLY-SILENT $START$ $END$ -- $FILE$ | [SOX] -V0.9 -D -Q -T WAV - -T FLAC -C0 -B24 - RATE -V -S -M -A 96000 WOULD I BE RIGHT THEN IN THINKING THAT ALL FLACS ARE BEING UPSAMPLED TO 96K NOW? 2) the FLC FLC Transcode entry - this uses SOX to downsample 192 to 96 and 176.4 to 88.2 Beyond those default settings, all you can do is force one or both of these choices to a fixed rate (e.g. in your case 88.2). I'VE AMENDED THIS NOW TO 96K. I THINK I READ INTERNET FORUMS TOO MUCH AND ENJOY THE PLACEBO EFFECT. NO DIFFERENCE WITH 88.2 AND 96 WORTH BOTHERING ABOUT ON RE-EXAMINATION. :) What you can't do without real code changes to the server software is to be selective - you can't say (for example) On a Touch, leave 88.2 and 96 files alone but upsample 44.1 or 48 to 88.2 GOTCHA - CHEERS At the moment you are forcing 96k to 88.2. I really REALLY wouldn't do this. You are losing information for no good reason. There is no DAC on the market (that I know of) that can do 88.2 but not 96... MY DAC DOPES 96K - I'LL LEAVE WELL ALONE If you really feel that 44.1 upsampled to 88.2 is a clear audible improvement, I would take a long hard look at your DAC choice. I'm happy to trust someone more knowledgable who's looked into it in detail! I can always tweak it as time goes on, as and when I learn more about Sox implementation..:) One question though, in Advanced/File Format settings, under Flac I now have Sox/Flac and Disabled as my two options. If I set to disabled, with the Sox upsampling be done on my server and not the Touch itself? and is it a case of that to set Flac to Sox/Flac means the conversion is done on the Touch itself? Which option is preferrable you think? I'm asking from the view that the less the Touch has to do (i.e. transfer as much number crunching to the server pc as possible)is better - and ties in with the Software mods reducing the load on the Touch CPU and memory as possible. [SlimDevices: Touch] Cant get SoX upsampling to work - pulling my hair out...Numpties Guide please?
I run my SB Touch into an external DAC and are very impressed with the audio capabilities of the Touch into my dac using coax spdif. I have TRIED to get upsampling using SoX working, but just cant get it going. I have created the modified config file and put it in the right place..all the things im supposed to be doing? I get the feeling I'm missing something fundamental. When I was TRYING to get SoX working, I noticed that when I go into More Info my Flac files read as 16/44 and not 24/96 which I would have expected if the files were upsdampled using SoX. Troubleshooting this, I notice that sox.exe isn't even kicking in on my server. Would I assume that a good way to check it is working is that once SoX upsamples theFlac files they will read as 24/96 rather than 16/44 on the Touch More Info screen? For Info: I run Windows 7 x64 and have set Squeezecentre to decode Flac not on the Touch but on the server itself. I have upsampled a couple of albums in FLAC using Foobar to 24/96 and I can appreciate and prefer the difference over 16/44 versions of the same music, so to save me having to use Foobar to upsample ALL my favourite albums(!), it would be great if I could get Squeezecentre to upsample them before being sent to the Touch. Again, should it be a case of once SoX upsamples theFlac files they will read as 24/96 rather than 16/44 on the Touch More Info screen? -take to heart as well this advice: Get a Squeezebox Touch right now. You'll never look back.- Quite the glowing review I'd say... Reading it had really made me think about asyncronous USB. I actually suspect that the Reviewers opinion that the Touch sounded SO over and above the norm with USB indicates the Touch's even greater potential as a Transport, NOT JUST how good the Ayre Dac is... Theres a lot of interesting movement with asyncronous Dacs just round the corner, and I get the feeling that the Touch output via USB into, say, the new John Westlake Audiolab Dac (My next upgrade) will take the Touch into that other place that the review speaks of. Maybe over time Logitech's reasons for discontinuing the Transporter will reveal themselves?
