the techs from the marketing folks, it's also a good idea to distinguish
Logitech from the resellers.

 2) my debit card was debited within 24 hours, but 24 hours later the

I also believe that at least one other person has posted here saying

Thanks for clarifying with facts about the debiting and near-instant

As for the announced release date (your reply to dave77), the only
announcement that Logitech ever made was in September at the consumer
electronics show in Berlin (I forget the name), when they said -The
Logitech Squeezebox Touch Wi-Fi music player is expected to be available
in the U.S. and Europe beginning in December- (see:

The SB Touch runs a Samba (file sharing) server. So you can connect any

The SB Touch can be controlled by any capable device (eg, computer, PDA,
etc.) on the network, just like any other SB since the original SliMP3.
There could be an iPeng-like app for the Blackberry, but it would
probably have to come from a 3rd party developer (just like iPeng). As a
BB user I would like to see one, but I don't have the skills to write
it. And I don't see nearly as big a market for it compared to iPeng. But
one can hope.

That information helps understand your questions. There is still one
important question, which bpa asked: do you plan to run the server
software (Squeezebox Server, aka SBS) on the SB Touch or on a computer,
such as your notebook?

If you plan to use the SBS on the SB Touch (aka TinySBS), then you
cannot control it via a web browser, but you can control it via
SqueezePlay (as noted by usch), which is other software that you can run
on your notebook. If you intend to run SBS on the notebook, then you can
control the SB Touch from any other computer on the network.

fundamentally, how can you expect to know delivery date when Logitech

I think (personal opinion, no insider info) that Logitech has missed
the Christmas '09 window, and it is in their reputational interest to be

Yes, you can use the SB Touch as a controller for the SB Duet Receiver.
But what you heard about 802.11g not being capable of streaming FLAC and
SBC traffic at the same time is simply wrong. In some cases individual

maxing out an 11g network.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Text on Touch

2009-10-25 Thread aubuti

The text size changes automatically. If you use the IR remote, it goes
to the 10 foot (~3m) interface, because that's about the distance from
which it is readable (depending on lighting, your eyesight, etc.). If
you approach the SB Touch, the built-in proximity sensor senses this and
changes to the 3 foot (~1m) interface, which is smaller text. Of
course, if you touch the screen it also switches to the 3-foot
interface. I don't imagine many (any?) people would actually be picking
up the SBT to control it -- it sits on a shelf just like an SB3. I can't
comment on the audio quality of the digital out because I use the analog
outs.

 the point in my case.
You're welcome. Please note that in general the SB Touch does _not_
need to be connected to a PC. It can run the server software on its own.
However, the Inguz is by far the most resource-demanding plugin
available for the SB, and needs a sufficiently powerful PC to run it.
Putting that kind of computing power in the SBT would drive up the cost,
size, and noise of the SBT considerably, for a plugin that only a small
percentage of users would ever use. You can have Inguz, or you can have
PC-less operation, but you can't have both.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the question. The Touch and SBC both
communicate via TCP/IP. You need a network for them to communicate. That
network may be no more than the SB Touch, SBC, and a wifi router -- it
doesn't have to include a computer.

Strictly speaking I suppose one could use the IR Emitter feature of the
SBC to communicate with the SBT over IR, but if you're going to do that
you would be better off using the IR remote that is included with the
SBT.

Indeed, if the Touch can play files from an USB drive, it should be
also possible to play internet radio streams from a technical point of
 view.

I get the impression though that the internal server is only started if
 no network connection is found.
No, the internal server is started if the user starts it. It's
activated by commands from the touchscreen interface or IR remote. You
can definitely start it even if there is a network connection --
otherwise it couldn't stream to other SBs, and the built-in Samba server
wouldn't be any good either.

And yes, if it is connected to the internet, it can play internet radio
streams. Re 'standalone', obviously if it is connected to a network it
can do anything that it can when it *isn't* connected to a network
(kidstypike's def'n of 'standalone'), and it can also do more.
