Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Jumbo Chumby released - Compliments Touch
hehe... it's butt simple and can run completely local. It does have media services from Chumby and others, but it has a realtime clock so you don't need a server for time. The music services like Pandora and Shoutcast don't require a server anywhere. It does have a UPnP client, but this release is only photo's and video's. Upcoming software should include music support. It's really just a giant hackable Chumby so you can build and run anything you want on it. SqueezePlay would be a nice port ;) -- pounce pounce's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12645 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79871 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Jumbo Chumby released - Compliments Touch
The device has apps that let you put your cards in and upload your pix to sites as well as view them. That's the reason for all the card support. The button on the top is multi function. It's not really designed to be an alarm clock, but it can do it. Yes, no audio out other than the headphone jack. I'll post back after I try a USB DAC. I'm a huge Pandora consumer and can add that the Pandora player works well. It's still not Pandora One, but it works just as well as mysb. You can view previously played song art using the touch screen. -- pounce pounce's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12645 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79871 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
[SlimDevices: Touch] Jumbo Chumby released - Compliments Touch
So, I'm not a troll. I own a Touch and use it about 8 hours a day. I also have Chumby's and a Sony Dash... Just to keep the techno-geeks into the Touch informed about another touch screen appliance: Insignia (Best Buy) just released an 8" touch screen running Chumby and some nice native apps. It's fully hackable as well, unlike the Dash. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Insignia+-+Infocast+8%22+Internet+Media+Display/9854795.p?id=1218185322584&skuId=9854795&st=9854795&cp=1&lp=1 I haven't tried by USB DAC yet (it's at the office), but I am told by Chumby it should work. The alsa setting are set for 44 at the moment, but it played 96/24 FLAC's without a hicup. An interesting thing to note is that this chipset can run Android and Windows Embedded. I'd wager we will see Android running on this device in the next few months. -- pounce pounce's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12645 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79871 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Can you back that up with some facts or real data? This just seems a little wishy washy. "Fair" or "unfair" needs to be quantified. We cannot measure whether the Touch meets the requirement it was designed for unless we know just how many files or songs it should support and NOT support. Do we have a software or hardware defect? Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] USB Digital out?
Here is the link to the other thread. Typically the most value is to have USB on the DAC side. In many cases the Host side is going to be a computer and not a device. I can think of very few devices that can act as a USB host to audio to a USB DAC. Also, typically the USB connection is going to be more limiting than a good SPDIF connection. I say typically because in most cases the USB connection is limited by its common off the shelf chipsets. Only a few manufacturers of USB DAC's have gone far enough to get 96/24(+) working well. I fiddled with this and got my USB DAC's working with the Touch thanks to John's pointers. I do not yet have the Dacport product I mentioned in the other thread. I'm curious to see if it would work without the config changes since it's a 24bit DAC. I would like supported functionality, but like the others here I understand this is more niche and would understand it if Logitech didn't bother changing anything. There are other bugs I'd like to see fixed first if choices need to be made. -- pounce pounce's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12645 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78469 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

They are identical. Ok. I'll give it a go. When you see a difference how do you know it's actually audible and not something that's masked by the content? The test approach would be to baseline with whatever AD you have regardless of quality? I struggle with this a bit since you probably want to have as high of resolution as possible in theory to make this work well. wrt SPDIF I think the testing would want to look for Jitter which would/could impact the DAC on the receiving end and result in audible differences. peterw, Thanks for the reference. For whatever reason my search didn't turn up the thread, but with the poster info I was able to find: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70407 Yes, the Dacport is supposed to be a very good USB powered DAC + headphone amp. From the reviews on Head-Fi it's one of the best. I like my iBasso D10 as well, but the manual battery babysitting is getting old since I mostly use it at the office. The iBasso also has a limit on the USB and can't do 96/24 (it can on the spdif). [SlimDevices: Touch] Sending audio to USB DAC?
Can Touch support or potentially support a USB DAC? I'm seeing some references like snd_usb_audio that make me think it might be possible. I tried my iBasso D10 by just plugging it in and resetting the Touch and trying to play something, but no joy. That's as far as I got. Anyone have any information or insight on the topic? Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] SQ: streaming vs. local operation
You have many many variables above what you have stated to deal with. First, you haven't mentioned what connection you are using. You do mention Jitter. Is this the only item you are considering to impact the quality? If so perhaps if you are in the business you might send your device to some of the testing houses that provide the testing service for Jitter on hardware devices. There are several. If you don't want to go that far and you want the community to participate you may want to make your full system specs available was well as a test file. It's doubtful that there will be great numbers of people with your same hardware so you might want to consider reducing the hardware components down to a bare minimum in order to get more involvement. You may want to check the other threads on disabling wlan. Last I checked nobody was sure if the radio was off even if the drivers were not loaded. You also might want to set your screen saver to turn the display off during your tests. This will reduce interference from the backlight. This means that there is typically no way to put the issue of some form of balance control on the customer by using their receiver etc. This means that if a person is listening off the headphone jack and is in need of some balance control due to a a situation (bootleg live concert, hearing problem etc) they don't have any ability to do so. When comparing the use cases for a balance control it's a little easier to lower the priority when you look at the outputs to customer equipment like the spdif's and analog out. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] balance?
If this was really needed via remote I would imagine the two options would be using a Controller or using a universal remote. Implementing with a Controller would probably be the the most ideal since you would pick up a lot of functionality and would be dealing with SqueezeOS on both devices, but more costly for the end user. A universal remote could add some IR codes which could then be passed into the event system to address balance. I looked for documentation on the IR events, but didn't find much. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Static IP
I almost agree, but would state that in an enterprise DHCP is better even with mostly static machines because of the extra management bells and whistles it provides. Yes, even servers get DHCP. At the home with consumer grade equipment and less need to manage pools of IP's and changing infrastructure do what works for the issue at hand. -- pounce pounce's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12645 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77625 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

I'll disagree with you and move on. Plenty of testing to show there is a difference. Big difference between a consumer toslink cable and a fibre cable. Don't forget these cables are fragile. Bad cables and even high quality glass cables can be damaged and still technically work, but not work well. -- pounce pounce's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12645 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77649 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Well, good terminators and a crappy plastic cable between isn't going to help. It's everything. The terminators, cable and receivers. Higher quality is required for less jitter where coax can get by cheaper. -- pounce pounce's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12645 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77649 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] My thoughts on the sound quality of the Touch
Lots of debate on toslink, but in the end it typically has less bandwidth than digital. A PCF toslink cable is what you want for any distance with less chance of damage. If you have groundloop issues and don't need to run over a few feet then toslink is ideal. toslink is also more dependent on good components to eliminate jitter. Digital is much more likely to do 24/96 or 24/192. I use both. Using digital on the Touch at the moment. -- pounce pounce's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12645 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77649 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch's Handling of High Rez Music Files
Is this a pre-sales question? The Touch does not download files. You can play them from a local drive or SD card or you can use the Touch with a remotely installed SBS to play your files over the network. DAC sound is too subjective. Since you can hook up with analog and digital to your receiver you might just want to try both and do a blind test and just use the one *you* think sounds better. -- pounce pounce's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12645 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77624 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24bits/96hz is stuttering like crazy
John, Do you have a Touch? There are several threads on the same topic really discussing a lot of these point. I think you have restated many of the issues well. In a nutshell using an external server works best. Obviously, this is not how the Touch was designed to be positioned, but for 24/96 that seems to work best. -- pounce pounce's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12645 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77550 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
