Re: [Trisquel-users] an Open Source Hardware Certification
So it'll be necessary to see and wait if that make it in or not. True that but that would be MY definition of truly open hardware. ;-D It seems you're trying to present the so-called Open Source Hardware Certification as something more fundamental that the RYF program. Right now this is pure speculation but once a definition has been developed which allows free hardware (not free of charge but free in the sense of free software) I indeed think it would be much more fundamental than the RYF program is right now. Provided this hardware would be made available we would, for the first time ever, have to chance to have a truly free computer system. Including all hardware and software parts. Unfortunately, we are still very far away from such a system right now and all we have is free software and a free BIOS on some mainboards.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Intel graphics will require non-free firmware
Anyway is this really happening?
[Trisquel-users] Remove unnecessary packages and services
I use Trisquel 7 Mini and everything works well. However I want to remove unnecessary packages and services that I really don't need for example lvm2, dmraid, mdadm, modemmanager, ppp, btrfs-tools, jfsutils etc. I can remove them using apt but then I get a long list of packages due to dependencies of Trisquel's metapackages above of line Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them. If I would execute autoremove then it will remove almost all the system. I get a same list and message if I try only remove Trisquel's metapackages. So what would be the best way remove these unnecessary packages and services safely and avoid message of Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Intel graphics will require non-free firmware
Why would you not believe that it is? Well, because Larabel, the last time I searched, was the only guy to explicitly say that it's happening without linking to Phoronix. False hope on my part, huh?
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Intel graphics will require non-free firmware
After talking with Nico (who is the developer of Bananian, a Debian based OS for the Banana Pi board, you can visit his website at www.bananian.org) the Banana Pro has a wifi chip that is supported by an open source driver. I made that specific question and his answer was this: 3.) The wifi driver is open source. Compare these two commits (merged from LeMaker) adding ap6210 support to our kernel: https://github.com/Bananian/linux-bananapi/commit/8049c152337806b5c2ea8c456a673bacc6770b5b https://github.com/Bananian/linux-bananapi/commit/0ceb311d369b9f334f5b1391b73ba065cb9aa738; I agree that we should move away from the x86. That is why sooner or later I will get a Banana Pro and run it with only free software (which is possible if you are willing to sacrifice 3d for now, work is being done to take care of it).
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Intel graphics will require non-free firmware
Nope, not just Phoronix. Even Intel.com. It's real. It's happening. It's not a joke.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librebooted Macbook 2,1
It would make your computer a lot more private and hard to track if everyone shared the same MAC Address ;) It would make network access impossible. Any responsible network will shut down your access in the event of duplicate MAC addresses.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Intel graphics will require non-free firmware
Not with Intel, unless someone manages to reverse engineer stuff or Intel changes their mind. First they had the proprietary BIOS. As if that wasn't bad enough, enter Boot Guard. To make things even worse now this with the video. Switching to AMD can address (some) of these three problems but the long-term solution for RYF-capable hardware, really, will eventually have to be leaving x86 entirely. I am once again reminded of http://files.jxself.org/build.ogv
[Trisquel-users] Websites that suggest exclusively free addons/plugins.
While filing a bug report[1] in Trisquel's bug tracking system, I came across these two websites which suggest exclusively free addons/plugins; 1. http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/GNU_IceCat 2. https://f-droid.org/ Do you know any other websites which can fit into the context? Also, is it possible to include GNU IceCat in Replicant's[2] repository, just as Mozilla Firefox is customized for latest Android phones? [1] https://trisquel.info/en/issues/14607 [2] http://www.replicant.us/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Websites that suggest exclusively free addons/plugins.
Do you know any other websites which can fit into the context? The entire directory.fsf.org website. I understand that getting IceCat into F-Droid is planned already but Rubén has been rather busy. See the Personal Note at the end of this: http://savannah.gnu.org/forum/forum.php?forum_id=8290
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Intel graphics will require non-free firmware
I haven't been checking enough then :( And there's no effing way out that's newer than Broadwell?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Could Trisquel 8 switch to MATE?
I apologize for the spelling mistakes by the way. I wish I could edit the original post. :-(
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librebooted Macbook 2,1
Although that could be potentially good. It would make your computer a lot more private and hard to track if everyone shared the same MAC Address ;) But yes, sometimes people need the real MAC so it's a good idea to save it.
[Trisquel-users] Could Trisquel 8 switch to MATE?
As of Ubuntu 15.04 onward, Ubuntu MATE is an official spin meaning MATE packages are available by default and will get feature and security updates from here on. Things can only get better with 16.04, for which Trusquel 8 will be based on. While I applaud Ruben's work in getting Gnome 3 classic almost usuable, maybe its best to switch to MATE to get the pre version 6 look and features that made the Gnome 2 versions so great. Low in resources and works well without 3D accelleration. Thoughts?
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Intel graphics will require non-free firmware
Of course it is. Why would you not believe that it is? This is just some joke thread? Sadly, it is not.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Intel graphics will require non-free firmware
From a software freedom perspective, x86 is like the Titanic. It's going down and it's time to get off. Now where's my lifeboat?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librebooted Macbook 2,1
I know, but the idea is that we stop doing that. Just as an IP can't/shouldn't be used to identify a user, same way a MAC address can't/shouldn't. Also, there is the very stupid (or very futuristic as someone called it) idea of build our own networks, that I suggested in a thread in the troll hole. That would not have a problem with MAC address :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Remove unnecessary packages and services
This case has solved. I did a fresh installation using GUI installer and I could remove metapackages except one and then I removed all my unnecessary packages (and then apt-get autoremove command). Re: [Trisquel-users] Looking for help with Abrowser flash films
I thought I recalled Flash being pulled from Macs. My bad, then.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Could Trisquel 8 switch to MATE?
It's disingenuous to suggest that GNOME has removed a feature it hasn't Sorry for my imprecise use of the language, I'm still learning English. What I wanted say is that we lost a feature because of GNOME putting in the way, not that it was GNOME itself who removed it. Sorry about that. and supposedly (I've only heard it in this thread) it's difficult to use an alternative window manager with GNOME Flashback now I read this in an article about Metacity on Wikipedia some time ago, though it's in Spanish http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metacity#Controversia My translation: However, since Gnome 3 it will not use Metacity but Mutter, which does not allow the use of any window manager without rewriting the source code, this has generated even more controversy to the point that the Proyect GNU itself has greatly criticized the project and suggested solutions but apparently have not been heard by the GNOME project. I'd say what's most important is to look at the accessibility problems MATE has, and consider whether the benefits of MATE outweigh those problems. I agree, perhaps @Dave_Hunt can tell us more about those few minor accessibility gaps with MATE.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Looking for help with Abrowser flash films
Adobe Flash is available for Android. I found plenty of results by searching flash for android in DuckDuckGo. You did say they typically don't have it, but I wanted to make that clear.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Could Trisquel 8 switch to MATE?
Yes, there is a version Mintmenu for MATE. It seems to prevent dconf-editor from running correctly when I install the version from Dagda, though (except I'm probably the only one who cares one wee bit about that). Agree with you regarding GNOME Shell.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Looking for help with Abrowser flash films
Mainly because Apple (mainly Steve Jobs, IIRC) explicitly rejected Flash on iOS, which was to my recollection mainly because they wanted to control the user experience of iOS tightly, and Flash handed off control to Adobe. Apple passed it off as Flash being obsolete, or something to that effect. Partly also because Flash Player just didn't perform very well on ARM devices of the time when Adobe first released betas for it. I experienced this first-hand; on the OpenPandora, Flash performance was so terrible that having it was pretty much completely useless. (Note that the OpenPandora was less powerful than other ARM devices at the time, so it probably wasn't this bad for most Android users, but it still wouldn't have been all that great.)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Could Trisquel 8 switch to MATE?
solving several longstanding energy management issues. Can you give examples of those energy management issues?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Websites that suggest exclusively free addons/plugins.
@jxself, Thank you for the update. Personally I love GNU IceCat due to emphasis on privacy and, of course, it respects my freedom. Porting this gem to F-Droid, the fully free repository for Android distributions is a recognition in itself to the maintainer and the whole community behind it. @pizzaiolo, Great suggestion! @marioxcc, What I meant was websites that suggest exclusively free 'addons/pluggins' for IceCat/Abrowser. Anyway, I can crunch on some of those games later; Thank you.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Looking for help with Abrowser flash films
Why would you think that? Adobe releases all its other software for OS X, why would they neglect Flash, a program which used to be so incredibly prominent on the Web that people to this day tend to install it just as a matter of routine? The only general-use computers running proprietary software that don't typically have Flash on them are ARM devices.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Looking for help with Abrowser flash films
While we're on the subject: why is ARM so badly supported?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Looking for help with Abrowser flash films
Anyway have they got a mobile version (Android and iOS don't use Flash)? I think if they have it'll be possible to open them without Flash, and hopefully without proprietary software at all.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Could Trisquel 8 switch to MATE?
It's disingenuous to suggest that GNOME has removed a feature it hasn't. What's happened is Metacity never had this feature in the first place (GNOME first got it with GNOME Shell), and supposedly (I've only heard it in this thread) it's difficult to use an alternative window manager with GNOME Flashback now, meaning you can't (easily) get the feature from Compiz anymore. The solution for GNOME Flashback would be to add the feature to Metacity. That's not to say I disagree with the position that MATE is better. Honestly, I don't have a strong opinion either way; for my needs, both are about as disappointing (I much prefer GNOME Shell), though I think MATE does have a variant of mintMenu, which is a neat thing if that's true. I'd say what's most important is to look at the accessibility problems MATE has, and consider whether the benefits of MATE outweigh those problems. After all, one of the major reasons Trisquel uses GNOME is GNOME's great accessibility.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Could Trisquel 8 switch to MATE?
Well, if we want to keep using Metacity we're never getting window tiling - and it's not GNOME's fault. Metacity never had it and Compiz didn't have drag-to-edge tiling until 0.9 anyway. It's got nothing to do with GNOME 3. But yeah, if you want tiling with a stacking window manager that doesn't ask for 3D acceleration, I wouldn't call MATE an unwise option.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Looking for help with Abrowser flash films
I thought you can't?
[Trisquel-users] Re : Could Trisquel 8 switch to MATE?
Isn't that great? It isn't. It means MATE still uses the unmaintained ConsoleKit framework that GNOME recently ditched in favor of logind, thereby solving several longstanding energy management issues.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Could Trisquel 8 switch to MATE?
GNOME Shell is the normal GNOME experience. Yeah, but as far as I know Trisquel aim to have a classic and lightweight DE for it's default image. And GNOME Shell needs hardware acceleration to run decently. That's why we use GNOME Flashback, but since it lacks features that MATE have without loosing anything (as far as I know), then we have a reason to make the change. Wouldn't you agree? Perhaps I should've used GNOME Flashback instead of just GNOME in my previous post.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Could Trisquel 8 switch to MATE?
its nede systemd?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Could Trisquel 8 switch to MATE?
BTW, can run orca in lxde
Re: [Trisquel-users] Remove unnecessary packages and services
BTW, if you ever want to clear the autoremove list, this command comes in handy (run as root): aptitude keep-all
Re: [Trisquel-users] Could Trisquel 8 switch to MATE?
GNOME Shell allows you to maximize windows on the left or right side of the screen. Of course that's got little to do with what GNOME Flashback is capable of, but GNOME Shell is the normal GNOME experience.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Could Trisquel 8 switch to MATE?
It's systemd needed? According to Gentoo's Wiki, no. Does MATE rely on a specific service manager or init system? No, MATE has been tested to work with both OpenRC and systemd and might work on other service managers and init systems too (untested, but no known reason for it to break); systemd support was added in release 1.6. Re: [Trisquel-users] New Intel graphics will require non-free firmware
If I'm not mistaken x86 is actually nowadays used to refer to 32-bit x86 processors while x86-64 (or AMD64) is used to refer to 64-bit so I'm not sure what you mean.
[Trisquel-users] Looking for help with Abrowser flash films
Hello everyone, I have the following problem: For professional education, I would like to use the following site http://ilias.aekwl.de/ilias.php?baseClass=ilSAHSPresentationGUIref_id=27033 After login, there is a virtual book with several presentations. When I click on them, there is a new tab, black, with a grey bar at the bottom, reading: Click to play. I know this bar from youtube videos or tv streaming and ususally I can watch what I like. However, here the result is only a grey tab with nothing playing. I have already tried the following: Installed Totem extensions; the greasemonkey firefox extension with Linternamagica script; and Epiphany. It doesn't help and epiphany sometimes crashes. I don't know how to make it run and I'd appreciate any help because I don't like the thought to install any proprietary software. Thanks in advance.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Could Trisquel 8 switch to MATE?
its run orca??
Re: [Trisquel-users] Could Trisquel 8 switch to MATE?
I was thinking about this too, even with the great work of Rúben and the others on the appearance of the distro. We have lost features like window tiling, and we have bugs like bad drawing when scrolling on lists. And, as far as I know, is all Gnome's fault. But then, we have MATE which could make Rúben's life easier since he is not fighting with the DE on how should look like, because MATE already looks and feels just the way we are used to.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Looking for help with Abrowser flash films
Forgive me for saying this, but if it needs Flash, it needs flash. Is there any other format under which the book thingie is in? (I think there's got to be - because otherwise Mac users wouldn't be impressed either).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Could Trisquel 8 switch to MATE?
Window tiling's gone?? If it is I don't think it's gNOME's fault since it was basically absent in GNOME 2 and is present in GNOME 3.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Intel graphics will require non-free firmware
x86 and ARM are instruction set architectures (the format and semantics allowed for machine code). 32 bits or 64 bits in this context refers to the “word width”; the size in bits of the general purpose registers and usually also of the RAM addresses. Both ARM and x86 have 32 bits and 64 bits versions, but they differ in more than the word width. Most laptop and desktop computers use x86‐64 CPUs (Also called “AMD64”, “EM64T”, “Intel 64” and incorrectly, “x64”).

Do you know any other websites which can fit into the context? Yes, Libregamewiki.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Remove unnecessary packages and services
This situation is similar when the user is used Synaptic. Problem is that these packages are installed by default via OS installation and they are dependencies with OS metapackages. I also tested on Linux Mint 17.1 and there were not any problems there, All packages were standalone without dependencies and I could remove them easily using apt. For instance: sudo apt-get purge lvm2

Re: [Trisquel-users] Could Trisquel 8 switch to MATE?
Had Ubuntu MATE not become official Ubuntu project, though, would MATE still have made it to the repos anyway (since I'm pretty sure it's present upstream at Debian)?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Websites that suggest exclusively free addons/plugins.
Also, Trisquel's own browser add-on list: https://trisquel.info/en/browser/addons
Re: [Trisquel-users] Remove unnecessary packages and services
If I'm not mistaken none of the preinstalled packages are set to auto so you should be safe even if you remove the metapackages. The best way to know for sure is to remove one of them and do an apt-get autoremove and see if it asks to remove anything. Anyway, there's always netinstall :) or debootstrap. I use the latter.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Looking for help with Abrowser flash films
There are a few options you can still try: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/play-videos-without-using-flash
Re: [Trisquel-users] Could Trisquel 8 switch to MATE?
Same. Great idea. MATE for days. I love MATE.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Could Trisquel 8 switch to MATE?
Well, window tiling wasn't a GNOME's feature, but we have it in Trisquel 6 thanks to Compiz. As far as I know, we don't in Trisquel 7 because it's impossible to use any window manager other than Metacity without changing GNOME's source code. And Metacity don't seems to have window tiling, at least no in Trisquel 7.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Could Trisquel 8 switch to MATE?
I have Mate and orca working in another distro. There are a few minor accessibility gaps, but it is usable. Since Ubuntu Mate is an official spin, and Mate packages are also maintained in Debian (Jessie) main repos, I think Mate in Trisquel 8 is a fine idea!
[Trisquel-users] Re : Remove unnecessary packages and services
'apt-get autoremove' removes packages that were not explicitly asked for and that do not depend anymore on a package that was explicitly installed. Because the default install only explicitly installs the meta-packages, 'apt-get autoremove' suggests the removal of most of the system after those meta-packages are removed. The solution (besides never using 'apt-get autoremove') would therefore be to explicitly install the packages you need. You can take a look at the dependencies of the meta-package, ask for them but, before confirming, check whether it would trigger the installation of the packages you do not want. If so, then look at the dependencies of that dependency and apply the same process. Recursively. It can take a while but it certainly is doable. To do all that you can use the Synaptic package manager (in the System settings) or the terminal ('apt-cache depends' followed by the packages name gives its dependencies).
Re: [Trisquel-users] new to trisquel, linux-libre kernel, and the free software ethic
welcome to the community!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Looking for help with Abrowser flash films

Re: [Trisquel-users] an Open Source Hardware Certification
I think the goal for now is a free software notebook mainboard. If fx I could get a newly manufactured libreboot x200 mainboard, I would get one. I agree, you will not get non knowledgeable buyers to buy a free software computer, especially not because it will likely be more expensive. It has to be organized within the circles of free software users. Even at a somewhat higher mainboard price, I think it will have sufficient buyers if a campaign is executed. About the remaining librem 15 non free software, can it be reverse engineered? What if crowdfund money is at hand? Or is the encryption unbreakable?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Remove unnecessary packages and services
Because the default install only explicitly installs the meta-packages I think this is a bad idea. Perhaps we could file a bug requesting the actual packages instead? (In Synaptic those are in Installed (auto removable). If you select such a package and then go to the Package menu and click the tick next to automatically installed, the package will be moved to Installed (manual).)
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Intel graphics will require non-free firmware
Our safest bet is 32-bit? Why is it better than x86? (Sorry I'm not very knowledgeable, but willing to learn)
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Intel graphics will require non-free firmware
Huh, I always had the impression that 64-bit and x86 were synonyms :P Thanks!
