[Trisquel-users] Can someone please guide me through the JDK installation?
I installed Linux on my shitty old laptop because I wanted to learn how to program in Java, and I thought that maybe installing a lightweight Linux would make it easier for me to use this piece of crap. I had no problem installing JDK on Windows, but when I follow the instructions on the Oracle website I can't get it to work. I used [this](https://docs.oracle.com/javase/8/docs/technotes/guides/install/linux_jdk.html#BJFCDAIB) guide and after completion I get my terminal, write java or javac and it doesn't recognize the command. I've been trying to get it working for the past 3 hours so I'm pretty furious with the whole thing. Can someone explain to me how to get it done?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Migrating Trisquel to Another Hard Drive
And in general I would not recommend backing up programs if they are available in the distros repository. They can be easily reinstalled and it avoids the issue of different and incompatible software versions crossing over into a different distro and then making everything go sideways.

[Trisquel-users] Migrating Trisquel to Another Hard Drive
Hi everyone, This isn't specific to Trisquel, though I am running that OS on my computer. My laptop, which at the time was running Linux Mint, gave out on me. The hard drive has chronic read errors and can't find a boot device. I installed Trisquel GNU/Linux on an external terabyte drive as a stop-gap until I order a new hard drive for my laptop. I changed the BIOS settings to look for a USB device to boot from first, then look for an internal hard drive second, so as long as I have the external plugged in the computer will boot just as if it were an internal hard disk. Soon I'll be buying a new hard disk and installing it in my laptop. I'd like to migrate my system- data, programs, everything- from the external hard drive to the internal hard drive, then use the external hard drive only for backups. Is there a (relatively) simple way to migrate the system to a new drive? Thanks for your help.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Liferea privacy/security queries
I don't think it would matter as long as you have your trisquel operating system encrypted, aka if you encrypted your home drive, it wouldn't matter because they wouldn't be able to see anything except random letters, numbers and other crap. Do not quote me on this in case I am wrong, although I saw someone post something about what linux encryption does. You should look it up just in case. EDIT: I use noscript also, it is a very good addon.

Re: [Trisquel-users] ChaosEsque Anthology Release 76
It's 4 times the size of Xonotic's download, and I can't tell the difference between the two, other than some extra weapons and maps. Plus, your data is terribly organized. And you're making a new release every week. When your download size is 4 GB. No one in their right mind is going to download a 4 GB game over and over again every week. Not even if it's the best game in the world, which this game isn't. So in short, I think this fork of Xonotic is nowhere near good enough to be worth paying attention to, let alone actually playing. At least Xonotic is stable, a much more reasonable download size (a half hour to download instead of two hours), and focuses on quality rather than quantity.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Liferea privacy/security queries
Whether the connection is secure would depend on the server you're getting information from. It's nothing to do with Liferea specifically. If the URL starts with "https", it's encrypted. If it starts with "http", it's not. This is true of Web browsers, too. But note that the actual information in feeds is usually public. What would matter the most to a snooper is metadata: what feeds you're following, specifically. Encrypting a connection does nothing to prevent this kind of snooping. You need to use Tor to protect your anonymity: route your requests through proxies to obfuscate the location you're requesting information from. Whether the hassle of setting up Liferea to route through Tor properly is worth it is up to you. The easiest way to get that working is through Tails. (Tails is not a libre distro, I should note; it contains proprietary firmware blobs. But if you have a computer that doesn't have any hardware needing proprietary firmware like one of Think Penguin's computers, that firmware obviously won't run.)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Liferea privacy/security queries
Ok so I can assume that trackers are able to obtain information through ads and other scripts regardless of whether its connected by https or not, as these are not blocked by any means in Liferea. I might see about routing it through Tor. I might also consider a VPN.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Boot Splash and LightDM do not work!
Hi, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, reinstalling didn't help. It now doesn't show any splash at all; before, it showed the text splash. I tried editing the text splash, the logo splash, still it shows the same. I tried update-alternatives too, but it didn't do anything. This is just a regular fresh ISO of Trisquel Mini. Surely I can't be the only one experiencing this?
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to connect to wifi
And sometimes the drivers may be free but functionality would require a firmware that is not free... In such cases if the hardware does not function at all the only way is to get another piece that can be operated in freedom or if the hardware works partly one has to decide whether it is tolerable in which case it will be used as is or if not tolerable, then again another part has to be acquired.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Liferea privacy/security queries
Thanks for the response. I disagree that it doesn't matter. Encrypting my hard drive, as far as I'm aware, does nothing to address these issues. If liferea connects via http for example, that could very well mean that the connection is insecure and I'm at risk of having information intercepted. Also, as there are no script or ad blockers in Liferea, does that mean that Facebook, Google and the like are tracking me by widgets on websites etc? Are third parties getting identifiable information of me through Liferea? .

Re: [Trisquel-users] How to change keyboard layout to Russian?
I haven't recently used the default Trisquel graphical environment, but I remember that changing the keyboard layout didn't work well at all. As a workaround I installed GNOME Shell. You can install GNOME Shell like this: sudo aptitude -R install gnome-shell Then you have to logout and in the login screen, where you select a user and type in your password, you have to specify what kind of session/graphical environment you want to use. You should select "System Defaults". If everything is correct, your desktop will look like this: https://www.gnome.org/gnome-3/ Changing the keyboard layout should work as expected with GNOME Shell.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Help me come up with a name for this Trisquel fork.
This was what I was thinking. It is better for us to band together and improve a project to further greatness than further fragmentation. While I can see the potential for a slightly different flavour of Trisquel to be added to the current ISO's but even then it would have to be a fairly big difference for it to be of any real major use.

Re: [Trisquel-users] How to connect to wifi
Your wifi card may not be supported by Trisquel, as Trisquel by its very nature of being free software (as in freedom), does not permit software that is non-free (as in imprisoning) - including some wifi drivers. It MAY be possible to get your wifi card working, but this is an ethical issue for some here to assist in this. If you don't know if it is, open up a terminal and type in lspci -v and scroll through the returned results until you find your wifi card. You can run a search on your wifi card and it may be supported. Ubuntu forums are probably the best place to look. If it is, it's then your choice whether you would like to install software that does not respect your freedom, or consider buying hardware run with free software e.g. https://www.thinkpenguin.com/catalog/wireless-networking-gnulinux

Re: [Trisquel-users] I've the old problem with the Intel wifi card
I don't know how hard it is but I know that the more freedom we want to offer the easier and out of the box the experience should be. That is the only reason for which I've chosen Trisquel instead of the others recommended distros because freedom should be for everyone.
[Trisquel-users] Wifi card support
The number of threads on this forum that is regarding unsupported wifi cards, I think, is cause for concern. I think that there needs to be a list of supported cards made more obvious to people new to Trisquel, and a note as to why the majority of them are NOT supported, as well as suggestions for alternatives otherwise people are going to continue to encounter this problem and more and more of these forum threads will be created. I don't want to deter people from installing Trisquel or discourage them from using free software, but I think people arrive with a preconceived notion that things are just going to work - particularly if they worked beforehand on Windows, Mac or other GNU/Linux distros.

Truth be told I just don't think Trisquel will play nice with NSA/Windows. :)

[Trisquel-users] Liferea privacy/security queries
As a newb, I don't know how to check for this sort of thing, so if someone could inform me how that would be much appreciated: I use Liferea to keep up to date with a few different sites and it dawned on me that I don't know how it is able to load pages within its console. Does liferea connect to pages through https? That it's connecting to websites, doesn't that mean it is doing so without any script-blockers, ad-blockers etc. that I use in my browser? I use liferea to update me of any changes, and I right click on the links and open in an external browser. Is this not "leaking" identifiable information? How do I go about viewing what information is being exchanged between Liferea and the subscribed sites?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Help me come up with a name for this Trisquel fork.
I myself am not a Crunchbang user, I have always made my own forks of various other platforms that are similar (better imho) to Crunchbang. I now want to proceed with these principles on a completely free system. I like Crunchbang-esque distros because I am a very minimal person. I like minimal environments, simplified menus, slim designs, and distros that have superior and more software choices out of the box. Despite what you may imagine, the official Crunchbang was not very lightweight. Any debian or ubuntu-based system running Openbox will use less memory. So I figured Trisquel with Openbox would be a good candidate.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Help me come up with a name for this Trisquel fork.
Very understandable. Crunchbang was discontinued recently. If you think it would be a good alternate edition of Trisquel, maybe Crunchsquel? Tribang?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Help me come up with a name for this Trisquel fork.
Why not make a fork of debian that is similiar to trisquel. it would be much easier, you just learn from gnewsense and debian to make something awesome. or, you could trisquelise debian... Then we would have a trisquel that could hibernate, be installed like debian (but with the exception that it could have a live image of every good desktop as an option. :) any thoughts?)

"I want to make a fork of Trisquel" If Trisquel isn't meeting your needs in some way please help to address that by joining the development of Trisquel to improve it and the things that don't work for you rather than fragmenting effort by starting a new one.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Help me come up with a name for this Trisquel fork.
First of all. Great that you want to help free software. Instead of a fork, maybe be a part of the NetInstall disc as KDE is today. KDE version is called Triskel i think. Maybe get your project there? Name suggestion Trisbox ?? Most people here would not recommend using the word "open" in Openbox because it hints to open source. I see that make a fork of something can be great if a project has lost its road or stopped developing but forking a project that is walking the correct path and forking it It will just lead to confusion and people in the free software have to work more for less because their is no cooperation.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Need for compromise in Free software? With Richard Stallman
My comment about what they talk about is I feel if the free software movement would not compromise at all and go the RMS road that would limit the message and it would isolate it to a small corner of teh internetz. A small isolated universe of geeky guys. I would not be a free software user if I hadnt listen to many hours of RMS talks at Youtube, and RMS dont want his talks on Youtube. Catch 22? This isolation has the open source world cracked and has created great looking and easy to use distributions. The best example I know is Linux Mint. It is great looking, easy to use, easy to update and easy to install new software. Any Windows user can easy start using that. My thinking is that free software movement today is too geeky. Geeks like RMS or long time "Linux" users that jump over to Trisquel. Trisquel is missing the "magic" that Mint, Ubuntu and other big distroes have. I think the firsts steps is too big for new users for Trisquel. If you show a new user any new Linux Mint release and Trisquel and say that Linux Mint is open source and Trisquel is free software the user would not go the free software road because they probably think that free software is 10 years after because of all the compromising/only free software. I hope that Trisquel 8 will look a lot better then 7 out of the box. A good style, theme and icons for that I did read MATE. And some good looking included backgrounds. Themes that looks ok for a new user, a theme that dont repel new users. I cant contribute for the theming work but I can be a tester of the theme before final release of T8.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux

Re: [Trisquel-users] Creator of Debian committed suicide…or beign murdered?
After the wet season, when the northwest monsoon has finished and before the southeast trade winds begin, various items wash up on the beaches around Cape Arnhem and Yirrkalla. Among these items are coconuts, breadfruit, pandanus cones, long seed pods, as well as timber and the occasional canoe. The people in these areas believed these to be gifts from the jiridja spirits to the relatives who are still living. They also believe the northeast winds and the clouds are also gifts to them from the jiridja spirits. The living send the spirits of their dead by performing the mortuary rites and singing the appropriate songs. http://www.austhrutime.com/land_of_the_dead.htm We owe you so much Sad Rest in Peace Ian
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to connect to wifi
The price varies by region. It's $25 in the U.S. Apparently, the listed price in Europe includes VAT, so that's one of the factors in the price being higher. I don't know what other factors may be at play, if any.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Python to Move to Github
"What is your idea?" That when the GitHub apocalypse finally comes, free software will be very hurt indeed.
Re: [Trisquel-users] LibreJS is not allowing any page to load
It won't load gnu.org, nor this forum, nor any other site. Sometimes a DuckDuckGo seach pages loads... but not the pages.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wi-Fi is still not connecting
The problem is the intel wifi. That will not work with free software. You can get an internal or external replacement. See e.g. https://fsf.org/ryf
Re: [Trisquel-users] The Gaming Trap
All of the Doom source code by id Software was also released under the GNU GPL. Odamex is derived from code under the GPL, and it's libre. The problem with Zandronum is it's derived from ZDoom, which contains additional Doom Source License code from other contributors (since that is the license the ZDoom project chose to use, I think mainly because the Doom Source License doesn't have as strong copyleft).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Creator of Debian committed suicide…or beign murdered?
Not everybody who saw the context sees bigotry and racism: http://archive.is/OPlI7 although I tend to agree with onpon4 that Mr. Murdock probably had an unrealistically high opinion of human nature and did not anticipate the fact that mainstream media is quickly dismissing the incident as "the nonsensical drunken ravings of a lunatic". I find the spin of the SFBay article: http://sfbay.ca/2015/12/31/police-confirm-ian-murdock-arrest-before-suicide/ "Gatpandan said she urges anyone seeking help with a suicidal individual to quickly call police to get them to the help they need." particularly chilling.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How re-compile ich9gen - Libreboot installation
Usually you read documentation that comes with the source, often in an INSTALL or README file. That will tell you. (The GNU standard is just running ./configure and make when in the source directory. This works often.) A handy way to get what you need for compiling is to install the build-essential package.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Python to Move to Github
I don't think this is something to be overly concerned about, to be honest. GitHub isn't that great, but moving from one Git repository to another isn't difficult. I've done it multiple times. The SGE Game Engine used to be hosted on GitHub before I moved it to Savannah (actually, there was a long period when it was hosted on both), and Project: Starfighter used to be hosted on SourceForge before I picked it up and started maintaining it. Also, GitHub generally does not require proprietary JavaScript to use it well enough to contribute to projects hosted there. That's more than I can say about SourceForge.
[Trisquel-users] How re-compile ich9gen - Libreboot installation
Hello, I'm gonna install Trisquel but before I have to make libreboot installation with write protection by software methods. From libreboot.org site I know I need to change 2 files: descriptor.c and mkdescriptor.c and it was already done. Next step its re-compiling ich9gen with these changed 2 files. Could anybody tell me how can I complete this? What command I need to use for re-compilling ich9gen? I have never do in past something like that. thanks for helping
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wi-Fi is still not connecting
Your Ralink one need proprietary software in order to function. The AR9271 does not, but it does need a (free software) firmware. Please be sure to install the package open-ath9k-htc-firmware.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to connect to wifi
two thoughts occur to me, one you can dual boot until you figure this out, or two, thinkpenguin and technoic (not sure if that's what its called) well they have wifi dongles that can help you. its been suggested so I would go with one of those choices or both...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Creator of Debian committed suicide…or beign murdered?
RIP Ian Murdock. This is very sad news. Unfortunately, as onpon4 said, I don't think this is going to bring very much attention to the issue of police brutality. And to the people calling him "bigoted," please take a look at the context of his tweet.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Noob Here
Hello again! I'm back! I changed the version of Trisquel I have been using to the full version with GNOME! I absolutely love this thing. I never did solve this password issue however. Nothing works. I think it has to do with the manner in which I configure my hard drive? Just a guess, but here goes... First off, I am running this version of Trisquel installed on a flash drive. It is not installed on my hard drive. Next, the hard drive has three partitions: 1. swap 2. primary partition where operating system is installed (Puppy Linux Tahr Pup). 3. primary partition where files are stored. OK, what I need to get done here is to be able to access all files on the third partition and go to work on them. Trisquel will not allow it. Trisquel says I do not have permission to modify the files. I am to understand there are some passwords I can initiate that will make it possible to do that. Is there someone who knows how to do this?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Flyer Ideas about distributed computing
How about: "do you want to help humanity"?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Noob Here
Trisquel is installed on my USB stick from the live DVD. I boot from the USB stick drive and run Trisquel from there. That's not the problem... The problem is accessing files on the hard drive partition. I can read them. I can even save them as something else if I do modify them. But I cannot modify the existing files and save the changes. Trisquel says I do not have permission to do that. How to use this "su" and "sudo" password (if that is in fact the case) business to get my way with my own freakin' files?
[Trisquel-users] Re : Wi-Fi is still not connecting
Didn't you write in https://trisquel.info/forum/wi-fi-still-not-connecting#comment-85892 that the adapter with the Atheros chipset works (as it should)? The adapter with the Ralink chipset cannot work with free software: the driver is under the GPL but is useless without a proprietary firmware that Trisquel obviously does not ship.
Re: [Trisquel-users] The Gaming Trap
the doom source license says we can not allow mods for shareware doom. So using odamex will allow mods for shareware?
[Trisquel-users] Re : Wi-Fi is still not connecting
Are you certain it is the same chipset (not only the same driver) at work? You can plug both and show us the output of 'lsusb' (to be executed in a terminal). If it is, then the non-functioning adapter must be defective. Otherwise, there must simply be no free firmware available for it.
[Trisquel-users] Re : How can I make a bootable USB with Trisquuel mini?
Go ahead: the documentation is a Wiki you are invited to contribute to.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wi-Fi is still not connecting
Yes, there was, another model, but with the same Atheros chipset. It lights up, but it doesn't blink. And it says the device isn't ready, at the side of the clock. But this big Atheros adaptor worked as soon as I plugged it, even before any system or kernel update. The small one should be broken, I guess...

What exactly broke?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Microsoft wants you to train you in using Linux
Because people like Bill Gates, and a lot of those who have tons of money in the Technology sector, like Mark Zuckerberg, Eric Schmidt, Elon Musk, use their money in an almost political manner to try and shape the world the way they see fit. It's more about power than caring for those less fortunate.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Python to Move to Github
I think you're overlooking what happens when so many people are in one place. It's not about how easy it is to edit .git/config to change the remote origin. Even though things like bugs and such can be exported out of GitHub, few (any?) people actually seem to do this so as to maintain a backup of their project. Then there are the projects that don't have much activity. So when GitHub apocalypse finally comes few people will be prepared and there will be data loss either way. Not really a GitHub-specific issue though: It happens during outsourcing. The real solution is self hosting, but I understand this is unpopular, but please don't try to minimize the harm the free world will experience when the GitHub apocalypse finally comes. (And it will, because no company will last forever.)
Re: [Trisquel-users] LibreJS is not allowing any page to load
I did an experiment now, and the result was unexpected. I installed LibreJS on Firefox in my office's computer, which runs Windows 10,and guess what? The same result, it blocked every page from loading!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Microsoft wants you to train you in using Linux
If you think population and breeding control is helping people, sure. I call that a bit too Hitler-like. Of course Hitler was a Eugenicist too. A simple search for Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Eugenics will send you down the rabbit hole. This is one of the reasons I stopped using MS programs, and why I don't use Google. We have to fight back where we can.

[Trisquel-users] Re : Wi-Fi is still not connecting
Those two lines indicate that one of your adapter has an Atheros chipset; the other one a Ralink chipset: Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0cf3:9271 Atheros Communications, Inc. AR9271 802.11n Bus 001 Device 007: ID 148f:3070 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2870/RT3070 Wireless Adapter Is there a third adapter? If so, was it plugged when you executed 'lsusb'?
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
(1) I voted for Gnome Shell. This is for the "regular" or "main" edition. (2) And there should always be Trisquel mini with LXDE for computers with low resources.
