Re: [TV orNotTV] (Mostly NoTV) Going back to Cali

2013-10-22 Thread Kevin M.
Even though it is a chain, my friends who like fish tacos swear by the
Wahoos chain.

Old Town is OK, but it is a misnomer, as it is a recreation, not the
genuine article. Coronado is tough to hit on the way out of town, unless
you're leaving town on a boat. Balboa Park is very tranquil to me... the
little food stand next to the Old Globe Theater sells Guinness and has free
wifi... great place to sit and write.

 Kevin,

Thanks for the recommendations. Today was beaches, mostly from Mission
Bay north to La Jolla Shores. I managed to drive Sunset Cliffs near
sunset. I'll check out Cabrillo and Balboa Park tomorrow, hitting Coronado
on the way out of town on Wednesday. If I have time, I'll check out Old
 Town as well.

Any recommendations for fish tacos? Lucha Libre sounds interesting on
general atmosphere alone, but I suspect the fish taco isn't their strongest
 dish.

While in San Diego, don't miss the Hotel del Coronado or Balboa Park.
Ocean Beach is more for surfers (and I have it on authority the tamale
stand also sells drugs) but it has a groovy vinyl record shop called The
Cow that I swear was the basis for High Fidelity. I prefer the beaches
and bars of Pacific Beach, and a walk around Mission Bay is nice. Kayaking
on the bay is the best!

I'm trying to make my way back to California as well, but likely won't
make it this week. Catalina is worth the trip if you've never been, though
it will consume an entire day of your schedule unless you can afford to
charter a helicopter to get you to and fro (as I understand it, the
Catalina Flyer, aka the only fast boat that services the island, no longer
runs). If your travels take you as south as San Diego, i can make several
recommendations. Craig's show is fun to see, but be aware they'll most
likely tape two episodes with you in the audience, not one, but they don't
really stop tape for any reason so it flies by -- commercial breaks only
 last 10 seconds.

 I miss Roscoe's.

 Catalina or not).

Arsenio and Craig are off the week of the 21st, but I managed tickets for
both Conan and Leno on the 23rd. Will likely cancel on Leno in favor of
the Irish Craig, even though Harrison Ford is scheduled to sit with Big Jaw.

Kevin and I managed to visit Roscoe's when I was in L.A. a couple of years

[TV orNotTV] Tonight Show juxtaposition

2013-10-22 Thread Kevin M.
I'm down to one box full of videotapes to digitize. Today's VHS to digital
conversion included the 25th Anniversary of The Tonight Show starring
Johnny Carson followed by the 10th Anniversary of The Tonight Show with
Jay Leno and boy did it represent how times have changed. Carson's
retrospective was full of remember when? memories, while Leno's special
had a sense of see what you missed? to it. Aside from Leno asking Hugh
Grant what the hell he was thinking, I don't believe his incarnation of The
Tonight Show has produced any other iconic moments (maybe the Dancing
Itos?). The pace of the two specials was different, too. Carson spent time
not just on musicians who visited the show, but broke it down by genre.
Carson showed clips of comics whose careers he essentially launched. It
just goes on and on, and Leno had nothing that came close. Leno's
anniversary show was full of cameo appearances by big names who walked onto
the stage, said one word, then left... no substance... nothing memorable.
Carson just sat at his desk with Ed at his side. Leno used the El Capitan
Theater filled to capacity while Carson used his beat up old set in Studio
One in Burbank.

What the hell happened to late night talk shows? In my head I have a long
form article to write about the devaluing of the timeslot and
people working hard to make it less watchable to people. I genuinely have
no episode of Carson's show that followed the same format, and that came as
a shock to me because we take it for granted that Carson set the rules by
which everybody played. Aside from the theme, monologue, and Johnny
swinging a golf club to cue the commercial, viewers got something different
nearly every night. Sometimes it was a prepared comedy sketch, or it might
be a musical act, or a chat with Ed at the desk, or stump the band. No
formula. Yet on Leno's show, every Monday night since it debuted, Jay reads
humorous headlines... every Monday night for 20 f-cking years! How does
Leno not bash his head in with a hammer to avoid the monotony? No wonder he
has no iconic moments.

Done venting now. For now.

I remember Leno and Letterman doing anniversary shows (fifth, probably) at
about the same time. Dave's clips were actual moments, often bits of
conversation with guests, while Jay's were just a bunch of shots of starts
in the guest chair.

What the hell happened to late night talk shows?

Probably the biggest thing is that they went from being about conversation
to being promotional vehicles for guests. Of course, the LLS shows the
limitations of the conversation format, since it requires guests who have
something to say and a host who's willing to engage.

Re: [TV orNotTV] One Marlowe to revive another at ABC

2013-10-22 Thread Adam Bowie
I must admit that I'd get much more excited about a period Marlowe set in
LA of the thirties or forties. Yes it'd be much more expensive, but it
could look gorgeous. 13 episodes rather than 24 as a limited series. I
guess only premium cable tries period dramas properly these days.

Indeed go nuts - shoot it in black and white! What was the last TV series
shot that way? There's the odd episode here and there - and I'm thinking
back to Moonlighting. Or how about putting a black and white version on
your website or in a Saturday re-run?

Adam (who'd clearly never make it as a television exec)

PS Off-topic, but I saw the upcoming film Nebraska in the London Film
Festival recently. It looks gorgeous in black and white. However director
Alexander Payne admitted that he was forced to make it on a lower budget
because of that creative decision.

Of course, even in Carson's day it was about the plug (Bob Hope only came on

Probably the biggest thing is that they went from being about conversation

limitations of the conversation format, since it requires guests who have

As to weird, convoluted plots, The Big Sleep had 11 murders and only 10
were solved. This oversight even made it into the Bogart/Bacall movie.
Since the oversight was already known, I guess it meant that the studio
expected the audience to have already read the novel and expect that one
murder was accidentally unsolved. The oversight was brought to Chandler's
attention and he just shrugged it off. He was working on another story and
saw no reason to go back to a finished book.

I don't see Marlowe as a good detective choice for modern times. The things
he did well back in his day are less needed in our day. And he would
certainly be lost on a procedural drama which is more ensemble oriented.
But I also don't think a network audience would be interested in a period
drama.

However, there are only four West Coast teams, plus two in the Mountain time

other 26, or some games get played in the Eastern and Central time zones with
late start times, or they have the two Thursday night games going head-to-head
to some extent.

On that middle option: granted, Monday Night Football kickoffs were just
past 9:00 Eastern for years, but with today's longer game times, if they were
going to do the second game of the doubleheader at 9:00, they'd probably want
to start the first game at 5:30 or even 5:15 to avoid overlap, and that seems a

since it just didn't work for me in the viewings I gave it).

On the other hand, Castle hasn't done anything for me, so I expect this
to go nowhere.

The best Marlowe? Dick Powell. Garner came second, and would have been
perfect with a better script, but is still not bad. Bogart is third.

[TV orNotTV] Re: Tonight Show juxtaposition

2013-10-22 Thread Dave Sikula
I don't disagree with you about Jay, but I'll just add further how debased
Dave has made his brand. The great moments of his show happened either on
Late Night or in the first years of his stint at CBS. I think anyone
would be hard-pressed to assemble even a half-hour clip show of highlights
from the last ten years of Late Show; once Dave started phoning it it. I
mean, beyond the 9/17/2001 show, the return from heart surgery, and the
birth of Harry, (and note how long ago all of those were) it's been pretty
tough sledding in the Ed.

For now.

[TV orNotTV] Cee-Lo legal issues not likely to affect work

as Usher and Shakira would come back to relieve him and Xtina.

Andrew Jameson, Green's production-company partner (not his manager despite

time zone. Either those 6 teams end up on Thursday nights much more often
than the other 26, or some games get played in the Eastern and Central time
zones with late start times, or they have the two Thursday night games
going head-to-head to some extent. (SNIP)

But, the only reason I can think of for two Thursday Night games is that
the NFL is looking at those 12-16 games per week as so much valuable
potential TV programming content, and thinks it is somehow wasting that
profit potential by showing so many of them in the same time slots on
sunday mornings/afternoons. How does it help them to move a second game to
Thursday if they only wind up overlapping them again?

This of course misses a big part of the appeal of the NFL, which is how
compartmentalized it is on Sundays. It is very easy to follow an NFL
season, and there is a natural rhythm in building up anticipation for each
Sunday's games. MNF has been an enhancing exception to this, though still
keeping it confined to an extended weekend. With Thursday games I am
constantly losing track of who is playing and when, and it is often not
clear to me emotionally whether I am watching the first game of the next
week or the last game of the previous week.

I actually do have a running set of random Letterman highlights i've
recorded over the years (includes the Simon Garfunkel episode, as well as
the episode where he told the story of waking up to find a bear in his
kitchen). I just digitized the post-heart attack episode which was good,
though the episode where Bill Cosby guest hosted on the same VHS tape was
more entertaining to me.

I think on those instances when Letterman chooses not to phone it in, he is
the best talk show host alive. But since he rarely seems to take an active
interest in his show anymore, Ferguson gets my vote for most watchable

I will resist the temptation to give a full-throated defense of Dave, and
just make two notes:

1. Dave (Sikula) is grossly underestimating the number of really memorable
shows/interviews Dave has had. The last show with Zevon really can make a
case to be one of the ten best episodes of any show of any kind; the show
when he reveals the extortion attempt was riveting. The show he did the
night Carson died, that one particular show he did when he called O'Reilly
on his bullshit, the show he did during the 2008 election when McCain stood
him up, his riffs on the Leno/Conan wars. Those are just a few, he has had
a series of really interesting interviews with serious guests, and
thoughtful reflections on national tragedies and the deaths of people
important to him and the show.

2. I liked Carson fine, and saw many of his shows live, but I think you
will find that Dave has had more memorable moments in the last 10 years
than Carson had in the ten years before he retired.
