Re: [U2] Associated MVs

2005-12-01 Thread Mats Carlid

No problem.

Set up the 'D' dict records of ADATE ACTIONS OACTIONS and BYS
to have the same assoc field say 'X' and keep your PH-records.

The you may think of the 'X' as the 'Controlling association code' and
the AS_4 and AS_4A as the 'Dependent association codes'

The 'X' describes the 1-1 relation between the values in the fields and
the PH entries are not much more than a shorthand notation for listings.

In a Pick style dictionary this is no problem with the [D]ependent and

Hi Bill,

Is it possible to assocate the same dictionary item (field definition) to
more than one association phrase? I'm doing some conversion work and

How can this ever be necessary? If item A has a value by value relationship
with item B and item B is similarly related to item C, what situation can
exist where the values of A and C are not related in this same way?

2005-12-01 Thread Dave Walker
I've also taken a look at OOo, albeit in the context of supporting openqm as
opposed to U2. There's lots of potential there for ANY MV database.

I even dug down to see what might be involved in getting openqm recognized
as a datasource. At that time, all the database specs were SQL oriented. But
if the OpenOffice folks have open minds (sorry, couldn't resist), we'd be
smart to jump on this opportunity.

My $.02. Headed over there to vote now.

 Hi,
thanks for that encouragement - BetterBetter will probably
 be the place
to pursue the IBM angle. However Openoffice.org have also
 proven that
they are willing and able to modify OOo specifically for U2 if there
are enough requests from users for similar features/fixes - they have
already done so in the past. So, the request is still for the U2
community to take 10 minutes each (in total that adds up to a lot of
hours) and vote on the Openoffice.org issue. There are many
opportunities to take advantage of OOo, not just as an office
 suite but
as an integrated part of U2 applications, especially if you
 are looking
for similar MSOffice functionality/API on Linux/UNIX.

Thanks to those who have already voted. Apart from my own
 vote 5 other
U2 users have used 2 of their votes on this issue.

RE: [U2] Associated MVs

2005-12-01 Thread Bill_H
Thanks Mats. Actually I simply changed the association in the dictionaries

M AS_4
OACTIONSI ACTIONS TAKEN @RECORD7 30T
M AS_4 (from AS_4A)

and left the phrases alone. This is a bit counter-intuitive though. It's
as though there's no fixed relationship between attribute 7 and the phrase.
In fact, I changed the dictionaries to be:

and left the phrases alone as (no 'X' phrase) :

This is the result of the query:

Martin: The ACTIONS and OACTIONS are synonyms for the same field, so
presently ADATE(4) would have a C;8;7 in it while ACTIONS(7), OACTIONS(7),
and BYS(8) would have a D;4 in it. This is one of the painful (and oldest)
nuisances with the U2 products, where multiple dictionaries need to be
created for different output scenarios.

Thanks again,

Bill

For too many years in the U2 Community, we have been laboring with a single

I just downloaded the Eclipse software and the U2Editor plug-in.
Everything went pretty fair during the installation with a few variances
from the installation instructions and the actual options presented.
I'm having a problem, though, getting to the Universe programs. The
problem seems to be at the point of registering an account. The notes
say that the path is not required for Universe but when I try to
navigate to the account, I get no listing of directories or hashed
files. I can't find a way to change the account registration so I have
to delete the whole server registration and start over to try something
else. If I DO put in a path, I get directories and files listed but I
also get an error message The account name supplied is not a valid
account Failed to establish connection to MYSERVER.NAME

There are a number of other issues that lead me to believe this is not a
ready for release version. It shows a LOT of promise, though. It may
just be that the mirror site I used isn't up to the latest release, yet.
The ABOUT screen says version 3.1.1, build M20050929-0840.

I, too, had some problems getting the Eclipse U2Editor plug-in to open

I do agree though that this tool has lots of potential as a

[U2] RE: [UV] is there an equivalent to the UD ALL UniQuery keyword?

To all you UniVerse experts out there.

A site I know is moving from UniData on VMS to UniVerse on UNIX. Don't ask
why, they just decided that was the path they wanted to go down. Anyhow,
they've got used to the ability in UniData to LIST filename ALL and see
everything. They're a bit surprised that this doesn't work in UniVerse.
Any ideas?

Of course we could write them a BASIC program called LIST that scans the
command for the keyword ALL and if it finds it, works out what ALL means in
the context of that file before invoking the real UniVerse LIST with a
modified command, but I'd like to exhaust other options first.

Cheers,

I have noticed that HASH.HELP is strange like this on UV W2K. You can
end up resizing the file over and over and over because the
recommendations, including the file type, change as you resize the file.
Best bet is to stop after one use of HASH.HELP.

Re: [U2] JDBC and OpenOffice on Linux

2005-12-01 Thread Ian Stuart
Yes, Openqm has been on my mind as well, perhaps a JDBC driver could be
developed. Especially with Linux in a thin-client implementation it
becomes really feasible to distribute your database and application
servers across multiple physical servers.

Is there any merit in considering the possibility of starting a
U2/OpenOffice interest group

I've also taken a look at OOo, albeit in the context of supporting openqm as

I even dug down to see what might be involved in getting openqm recognized
as a datasource. At that time, all the database specs were SQL oriented. But
if the OpenOffice folks have open minds (sorry, couldn't resist), we'd be
smart to jump on this opportunity.

Hi,
thanks for that encouragement - BetterBetter will probably
be the place
to pursue the IBM angle.

Ian Stuart

2005-12-01 Thread Ian Stuart
Create an @ phrase in the DICT of the file with all the field name.
This will also honour any associations.
You could also create an @ALL phrase if you already have an @ phrase in
the DICT

LIST filename @ALL

ED DICT CM @
0001= PH
0002 = COMPANY ADD1 ADD2 ADD3 PCODE PROV ORDER.DATES ORDER.VALUES

Alternatively, if no @ phrase exists in the DICT, type REVISE filename
and an @ phrase with the first 50 fields will be automatically created
in the DICT - at least it does that in INFORMATION and PI/OPEN flavours.

How about just adding a phrase to each DICT called ALL that lists all of
the D-type items?

eg: DICT CUST.MST ALL
001: PH
002: CUST.NAME CUST.ADDR1 CUST.ADDR2 CUST.CITY ... etc

You could even write a simple program to SELECT DICT filename WITH TYPE =
'D' BY LOC, and then loop through create the ALL phrases for that
particular file.

One time setup, then it's available for their use.

2005-12-01 Thread Womack, Adrian
An alternative to using Larry's suggestion of writing a program to
create a phrase of all the D types, you can use REVISE filename which
will automatically create an @REVISE phrase in the dictionary containing
all the D-types. You can then just rename @REVISE to ALL.
