Re: [U2] [OT] Interview Questions
Tony, I agree with everything you said except one thing . "And I'm going to alienate about 70% of our colleagues here, but I think a modern interview needs to favor those who have current knowledge of a variety of technologies. A BASIC-only developer isn't going to cut it anymore and people who are BASIC-only are holding onto their jobs because they know their current applications, not for their technical skills ." I think you have it wrong and that 70% agree with you and 30% will disagree, I don't want to get to far off topic on this off topic topic, but most if not all know that just being a pick basic developer doesn't cut it anymore, pick talks to all kinds of "modern" technologies and the "green screen apps" are going the way of the dinosaurs, so one would have to have their head in the sand to not see that you need more skills than just knowing pick basic and how to create dictionaries and write prok's, having said that your post was well said "as usual" dougc ___ U2-Users mailing list U2-Users@listserver.u2ug.org http://listserver.u2ug.org/mailman/listinfo/u2-users

[U2] uniobjects dll question
Is it possible to just put the uniobjects dll on a system without installing it? I am working on a "home" project where I have an android app call a web service to get UV data from my linux server. I have a hosted system running windows server and I am working on a c# web service that will receive data and pass it to a subroutine (via uniobjects) on my linux box. I have it working locally on my home test system (windows 2003 with uniobjects installed) but I would like to move it to my ISP, I have an email in to them to ask if they could install uniobjects and they are looking into it but I was wondering if they just put the dll somewhere I can reference it, if it would work (in case they say no). I may try creating a VM and trying it but I was hoping that someone on here would know if it would work or if it has to be installed. thanks dougc ___ U2-Users mailing list U2-Users@listserver.u2ug.org http://listserver.u2ug.org/mailman/listinfo/u2-users

[U2] [AD] FREE pick date conversion android app [/AD]
hey all, I just published an android app that will convert a external date to an internal date or a internal date to an external date. While I know that the "seasoned" people on here probably have the dates memorized and the "brilliant" people on here can probably do the math in their heads, for the rest of us (or maybe just me) I needed a tool. Yes I realize that it can be done at TCL and probably every (or most) developers on here has probably written a voc/proc/program to do this, I am getting into android development (not using java but a basic4android sdk that mimics vb.net) and decided to write one. I plan to add additional functionality in the future to include: 1. generating prime numbers 2. generating a recommended file size (based on user input) 3. converting time 4. creating a widget 5. any thing else I or you can come up with that would be useful and once again I know, reinventing the wheel but at least this wheel will fit in the palm of your hand ... the app has a button to generate an email for suggestions/bugs/complaints/compliments/etc ... I hope if you have an android phone you check it out (bear my dog would really appreciate it as would I) the app is called "MULTIVALUE DATE CONVERTER" (or search for bagofchipapps.com that should bring it up) The app was just published so it may not show up for a while. thanks everyone dougc ___ U2-Users mailing list U2-Users@listserver.u2ug.org http://listserver.u2ug.org/mailman/listinfo/u2-users

Your right that if the server have an external IP then certainly you could access it but I doubt many companies actually do that (put an external IP on an internal sever but it can certainly be done). Then there is always firewall port forwarding that could allow an internal server to be accessed externally, but in all these cases you need a good system/network admin to ensure its setup and secure. Anyway we are getting off topic, so if we want to continue this discussion we should probably move it to its own thread. Re: [U2] [Windows]
I find this thread interesting (now that we have the name calling and such out of the way, I am taking no sides just saying) having said that I am still trying to fully understand what you are trying to accomplish. I understand (I think) that you have a system (running universe on windows) and you want to know the IP address of the system(s) connecting to your system running universe from another system? If I am not far off base, this would be pretty easy in linux using iptables (yeah I know) anyway I am not sure why you could not modify the windows firewall rules to record telnet connections, I have done this using iptables but never in windows, I may play around with it as I have a windows 2003 server I could toy around with (let me know if this is what your trying to accomplish or if I am way off base) Dougc -Original Message- From: u2-users-boun...@listserver.u2ug.org [mailto:u2-users-boun...@listserver.u2ug.org] On Behalf Of Wjhonson Sent: Thursday, September 06, 2012 7:50 PM To: u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org Subject: Re: [U2] [Windows] I've discovered, for useful content on this thread, that using SYSTEM(42) I can return my IP address, and then, on the SERVER (doing DOS from Universe TCl command line) I can then use the tracert command to associate that IP address back to my LOCAL (client!!!) PC who is doing the telnet. That is, each telnet knows the IP address from SYSTEM(42) but you cannot get the hostname from that, and there doesn't appear to be any way to ask the SERVER (not the CLIENT), what that IP address means in terms of who is ASKING (not responding). I know people who do this on a SINGLE pc get wildly confused by actual networked installs. At any rate, I still don't know how you get from the local information to the PID outside of having a connected universe process, and querying from inside universe. Re: [U2] Uniobjects on windows
The version I have I just downloaded from rocket 2 days ago (10.3.3 of universe as well as the current version of uniadmin) It would be nice if I was wrong but like I said going through the documentation it mentions configuring RPC and walks you through it but that option is missing from uniadmin. Maybe its pre configured and your not allowed to modify it (on the free version of universe for windows) but I keep getting RPC errors (in uniadmin as well as when trying to connect via uniobjects), My program is a PHP scipt that works just fine connecting to my other pick systems (which are all licensed versions of universe) but on the free version of universe (for windows) I keep getting RPC timeout, the code is on the same box as the database and I made sure the firewall is configured to allow uniobjects connections in (even though they are on the same physical box and I am using localhost). If I am wrong and I am just missing something I apologize to everyone for giving out misleading info I was just following their documentation and uniadmin does not have a configure RPC configuration option in the network section like the documentation says it should and shows. dougc On 12/13/2010 4:17 AM, Symeon Breen wrote: I have used the udt personal edition with uniobjects so i am not so sure that is the problem.. ___ U2-Users mailing list U2-Users@listserver.u2ug.org http://listserver.u2ug.org/mailman/listinfo/u2-users

Re: [U2] FTP Users in HP-UX
check your /etc/ftpusers (man ftpusers to get all the gory details) below is a snippit NAME ftpusers - list of users that may not log in via the FTP daemon DESCRIPTION The text file ftpusers contains a list of users that may not log in using the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server daemon. This file is used not merely for system administration purposes but for improving secu- rity within a TCP/IP networked environment. It will typically contain a list of the users that either have no business using ftp or have too many privileges to be allowed to log in through the FTP server daemon. Such users usually include root, daemon, bin, uucp, and news. If your FTP server daemon doesnât use ftpusers then it is suggested that you read its documentation to find out how to block access for certain users. Washington University FTP server Daemon (wuftpd) and Profes- sional FTP Daemon (proftpd) are known to make use of ftpusers. if that doesn't help let me know and I'll do some more digging around doug -Original Message- From: u2-users-boun...@listserver.u2ug.org [mailto:u2-users-boun...@listserver.u2ug.org] On Behalf Of Anthony W. If the behaviour is different for them and you, then it's presumably a firewall thing - their ftp request isn't even getting as far as the server. Once you've got as far as the ftp login, what happens there? Can they log in as root but not as themselves? You've now got a permissions problem. Oh - and your comment about the box being rebooted says immediately that this is a "soft" problem. Have you got any records as to what you did when you configured ftp? Because what seems obviously to have happened is that you made changes to the running configuration, but you didn't then push them back to the config files. So when the system all the changes got lost. You need to look at what permission changes you made, especially ones that affected the running ftp daemon. Because obviously you needed to make the changes, but that's as far as they got... I don't want to get to deep into this discussion but I have to agree with Tony (and even when I don't agree with him which is RARE, I am scared to argue with him as his knowledge makes me look like a school kid (well maybe a HS kid) .) just kidding! but I will admit that I respect his opinions greatly. anyway ... Re: [U2] Problem with Multi-value market in general
while I agree that marketing cannot totally save every product it sure can't hurt, I agree that saying "we run on an IBM database" sounds so much better than "we run on a rocket database" at least until rocket becomes (hopefully) a more well known company. To be perfectly honest my point was more of an attempt at humor than a "this is the solution" idea. I want U2 to succeed but the I have to agree with others that losing the IBM name (whehter you felt they were improving U2 or not) is a blow to thoes trying to sell a U2 solution And I have to slightly disagree with you about apple's marketing team, NEVER in the history of cell phones has there EVER ben a phone released where people stood in line for HOURS (20+) just to get a phone, not just because the iPhone had the app store or a touch screen or a web browser or visual voicemail, or the many other things it LACKED (prior to 3GS coming out) trust me I have had an iPhone since about day 200 and while I did not stand in line I was amazed that it took weeks before I could get an iPhone without having to wait hours. I do have mac book and I am actually working on a iPhone app (abeit not one that connects to U2), while I would love to do one (maybe tied to u2pipe) I want to wait and see how "rocket universe"/rocket U2 shakes out. Other makers have been trying to catch up with their versions of Apple's mobile products, but they're just not in the same league. It wasn't _just_ marketing that has made iPhone popular. The overall design and execution of the technology progression was planned very well. Can you say the same for any MV database? Apple has had a long-term (and huge) client following for many of their hardware devices and software applications. Many facets of the iPhone including interface design and app design and deployment venues contributed to the fast growth. It's not just a smart phone with web toys on it. It's a business sales channel with access to many markets. It will change the way business is being done, even more so than the Palm and Blackberry. Suggesting that marketing can help U2 grow the way the iPhone has is just absurd. Sure, we need marketing help in general but what has been said before is still true; people don't buy databases, they buy solutions. The iPhone is a solution (which runs SQLite for the apps BTW). Write an application for the iPhone that talks to U2 and sell it if you want to broaden the horizon. Also I have no history with them A lot of what all you say as to U2 not evolving enough is true, but part of the reason for that and problems in the D3, U2 or mult-value world in general is that almost all the current multi-value providers are doing one or more of these things .: 1) Either living off the bones of their installed base and/or swooping in to feed off of whoever is still running D3 and its flavors, but doing nothing to attract new users. IBM falls into the 2nd category. 2) Jbase (& I think Cache) are successful application software companies that basically created their own version of Multi-value to migrate to save their investment. I have not looked a Jbase in a while, but Cache has some nice new features. My company (BAI) is one of the dwindling software providers still bringing in "fresh meat" to the table. Up to now just saying U2 was part of IBM made a HUGE difference. The original Unidata name was not a good as saying we were an IBM database but their name and support material were very good. As good a Rocket may be, not sure saying we are running on a data base from a company called "rocketsoftware" will be any help in selling to our prospect base. Unlike IBM we will have to sell RocketSoftware viability as well as our applications. Unless Rocket comes up with a super marketing effort, things just got a lot harder for us. Frank E. Re: [U2] UV to SAP migration disaster
I worked for a company that bought another company to replace an existing product strictly because it has a "pretty interface" by management. The amazing thing was that they got several developers and support personall together to go over the system and see how it compares to ours (which was good) but that consisted of talking to the sales lmanager ady and hearing her tell us "oh yes it does that ..." amazingly we were not allocated time to actually see the system in action but rather to ask question if it could do "x" after purchasing the system, we had a meeting with the president of the company and I asked how come we did not just put a GUI on our current system and was told " we know you'll can do it BUT we cannot wait the 2 years it will take to develop" well we rolled out the system to our first customer and a week later they rolled back to the old system because while it had a pretty interface it lacked over 70% of the functionality that the old green screen system had and 3 years later when I left the company we were still fixing it to make it as functional as the old system it was replacing. Re: [U2] universe sockets
Interesting points, I will certainly share your "Stop looking at the sale price man! " quote with them. I appreciate everyone concern about reinventing the wheel/you'll never do it right/its a nightmare/it will be next to impossible to maintain/it cost more to reinvent the wheel than use a current wheel comment(s) and I will certainly pass them all on. Having said that I would appreciate any advice on how to at least make a good attempt at this, so that even if it gets scratched I can continue to "play" around with this at home (I personally find it interesting). Right now my biggest problem is how to make my app. nonblocking from blocking, I can create a blocked socket and read/write to it just fine but when I try to make it nonblocking it never connecting to socket request. My code basically is in a loop trying to read from a socket using readsocket and I understand why it works blocked but when I create the socket as unblocked I get the following error when I call acceptconnection "Connection ACCEPT Status = 12/The socket is marked as nonblocking and the requested operation would block." The acceptionconnection code is below (where MODE = 2 nonblocking) RESULT=acceptConnection(SOCKETHANDLE2,MODE,TIMEOUT,INADDR,INNAME,SOCKETHANDLE3) I would appreciate any advice/suggestion/code examples/etc, if your willing to share anything (or help) lets take it off the list so as not to bother others (d...@chancofamily.com is my email) thanks dougc --- u2-users mailing list u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org To unsubscribe please visit http://listserver.u2ug.org/

Wow great points . see below for my answers dougc >A full response to your inquiry really depends on the answer to >another question, which is "why are you doing this?" We want to explore other connection options that are not tied to uniobjects so that if we decide to switch from universe to say database "x" we can do so easier. I would also say that (in this economy) money is probably an issue as well, we have looked at several of the pick option available and while they work they also cost and its tough to sell management on a new way of connecting when uniobjects has done a decent job. Also we want to see if a socket call would be faster than a similar uniobjects one. >Sockets are geeky, fun, and challenging, and quite satisfying when they >work >correctly, but for the most part working at that tier is hardly >cost-effective given the plethora of software available to do >communications at a higher level. This is a good point BUT several things: 1. are you not limited to what they provide, so if I wanted to send/receive data differently than what they provide I cannot. 2. price 3. speed cost, would not doing a socket be faster than using some high level communications system? >Do you want to do sockets for >fun or because your business requires communications? Are you >trying to build a better mousetrap or trying to save money? I'd say experiment with building a better mousetrap and give us the ability to easier move from universe, should the situation arise (I personally hope not as I like pick) >You're going to spend a few weeks on this, now or over time. BUT I am curious what products are available for a few hundred bucks? I would certainly be willing to check them out BUT its hard to sell our budget committee when we have a product that work (uniobjects) or can write our own (sockets) >Also, if you decide to change employers (or your clients change >vendors), who is going to get stuck maintaining all of the custom >code? I suppose another developer which is why if we go this route we are going to have extensive documentation >If I were an IT director I would not allow someone to >write a custom socket interface internally for production use. [U2] running uvrpc at the same time on different ports
Hey all, is it possible to run uvrpc (aix 5.2 universe 10.1) on different ports at the same time? Its currently listening on 31438 but datastage is trying to access 31538 and we cannot find any reference in datastage that allows us to specify what port to try connecting on. so what we would like to try it to have uvrpc also listening on port 31538 (obviously as a seperate process), I have tried adding the additional port to /etc/services and may try adding it to inetd.conf am I wasting my time or is it possible to run uvrpc on different ports (at the same time)? thanks dougc --- u2-users mailing list u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org To unsubscribe please visit http://listserver.u2ug.org/

Thanks everyone great info! Dougc TLOTSP On Sep 19, 2008, at 3:57 AM, "Ray Wurlod" <> wrote: The "slave" referred to here is the process that needs to log in to do the work. When you connect via uvcs (which you do from UniObjects to UniVerse) the listener is unirpcd (or uvrpcd on older versions), listening on port #31438 (by default). A request to connect has unirpcd consult its services file (unirpcservices) for the name of the service that you have requested (that is, uvcs, the UniVerse common server), checks from the services file that your IP address is eligible to request that service and, if so, starts an instance of the associated executable, in this case uvapi_server. The uvapi_server is then your connection's "agent process" on the server, looking after such things as maintaining communications, monitoring the inactivity timeout interval, and so on. When some work needs to be done, such as executing a query, a child process uvapi_slave is logged in to do the actual work. Its stdout and stderr are redirected back to its parent (uvapi_server) so that the results may be returned to the client. It is this slave process that has failed to start correctly. Many reasons exist why this might be so. The most common, in my experience, is that there is no "clean path" to TCL - that is, the LOGIN process in the account puts unexpected text on stdout. All uvcs processes must be guaranteed a clean path to TCL. You can test @TTY = "uvcs" in the LOGIN paragraph in a similar way that you might test @TTY = "phantom" to bypass application startup for PHANTOM processes. (This might not be your actual problem, of course, and I'm not suggesting that it is, but it's something that's definitely worth investigating.) - Original Message - From: "Clifton Oliver" <> To: u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org Subject: Re: [U2] .net uniobjects error 39204 Date: Thu, 18 Sep 2008 16:19:26 -0700 Here's the error. Re: [U2] AIX Socket Command?
The way I would do it, is as follows: 1. login as root 2. run netstat -Aan | grep LISTEN you will see something similar to the following: # netstat -Aan | grep LISTEN f1f302506b58 tcp4 0 0 *.13 *.*LISTEN f1f302502358 tcp0 0 *.21 *.*LISTEN f1f3031a1b58 tcp4 0 0 *.22 *.*LISTEN f1f302503b58 tcp0 0 *.23 *.*LISTEN next run the below command on the port you want to know about) rmsock tcpcb below is an example (I know that port 22 is sshd but lets pretend that I did not) # rmsock f1f3031a1b58 tcpcb The socket 0x31a1800 is being held by proccess 250016 (sshd). # Now you may be worried that rmsock (remove socket) will terminate the socket but ti will not /*THE COMMAND WILL FAIL (I LEARNED THIS TRICK FROM AIX SUPPORT) */ BUT IT WILL RETURN WHAT PROCESS HAS THE SOCKET OPEN. In the above case sshd dougc now here you will need to know the Kevin King wrote: > I could find this given the time but time is not on my side right now. > Anyone recall the program on AIX that tells which program has a particular > socket open? > > -Kevin > http://www.PrecisOnline.com > --- > u2-users mailing list > u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org > To unsubscribe please visit http://listserver.u2ug.org/ --- u2-users mailing list u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org To unsubscribe please visit http://listserver.u2ug.org/
[U2] RE: UNIVERSE on Red Hat?
Hey all, First off thanks for the responses I have gotten so far! A couple more questions: 1. what kind of systems are you running red hat/universe on (model, specs, etc ) 2. what are you doing for high availability? 3. what are you using for backups (software/type of tape drives)? These questions are for people running universe on red hat enterprise server Thanks again everyone! Hey all, Does anyone have any experience running universe on red hat in an enterprise environment? I have run UV PE on centos and red hat just fine BUT I am talking about 400+ users, uniobjects, tons of printers, etc .. I would LOVE to hear about enterprise experiences running universe on a red hat system in particular; 1. any "gotchas"? 2. any praises? 3. any performance issues? 4. any universe/OS issues? 5. any printing issues? 6. any issues with terminals or termdefs/termcaps? 7. uniobject problems? 8. anything else anyone may have run across that I did not mention This is really a question for fitzgerlad/long but what about running FAST on linux? (a wonderful chance for a plug here) :-) Any and ALL experiences/thoughts/whatever are welcomed! IF we move it would be from aix 5.2/universe 10.1 to red hat enterprise server/universe 10.2 on a "beefed up" dell server Our current setup is about @400 users @40 printers @250 uniobjects connections (from a windows app) Connections from datastage throughout the day @3000 pick databases The biggest being @ 5 gig in size Also while this is not really pick related does anyone have any experience with "flash copy" on linux/red hat? It allows us to unmount file systems and 'flash copy" the data to another area and the remount the file system and then make a backup from the "flash copy" area. Thanks!
