Several years ago we used to store all the concepts here: https://wiki.
ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/NewWave
(this is the page of my old theme). What happened to that place?

I have nothing against creating many places for artwork as this would
encourage fair point of view and ratings. But the question I asked is Is
there really a need for such a place and can't you use already build
infrastructure to store your work? Maybe I'm too old and rational but
imhothis is just a unnecessary exercise, isn't it?

 I did monochrome icons because it felt slick and smooth keeping in mind

It might start soon (but not earlier that a month) and will finish when

I don't understand why people think pixmaps are bad. With the power of
today's computers you even don't see the difference between code based
and image based theme plus the fact that the detail and quality is at
least two times more for the little more you pay.

 You could try to raise some interest outside Ubuntu.

I'll definitely ask some more about this.

 If it's worth it?
 Is it possible the result would help you personally enough to make good
 for the effort invested? Could it lead to an influx of decent themes?
 Perhaps. I would likely try it out if it existed, but I would not write
 such a tool. I'm much too disappointed of GTK theming and every
 additional detail I learned about GTK made me like it less.

But as you say I might wait and see what Gnome 3.0 will deliver on the
theming side. I thought that later this could be integrated with the css
theme engine by simply having two (or more in the future) buttons:
Export pixbuf based theme and Export CSS based theme.

 Other pages: GTK, Metacity and Export.

Yeah I think that there could one more page Package alonside the
others. I think that a numbered list of steps in order to create the
theme would be the best.

 For the content of Theme Settings: try labels on the left.

I just tried to save some space.

 On Metacity Settings: Title parts order needs explanation right in
 place or an interface where you can move blocks around (most likely too
 complicated to code to be worth it, though).

Sure it does need this and will get one in the real project.

 You would either have to remember the date of last modification on
 export, or keep a copy of the last export around for a comparison.

I think that the date would be the preferred way of checking this.

Thanks for the reply! I hoped more people would like to see this

But I suggest this could be changed by using larger images (but slowing

If I accept your idea for the svg workflow then how could we specify

Porbably possible :)

 Either the border values have to specified separately (a GUI tool could
 help), or perhaps you could have a layer with rectangles in the SVG and
 have a script that queries for their dimensions.

 Aren't there elements where stretch is pretty much a must? Or do you
 have an example of an element that would have to be stretched in one of
 them, but not another?

Example:
image {
   function = SLIDER
   recolorable  = TRUE
   state= PRELIGHT
   file = Images/Range/null.png
   border   = { 0, 0, 0, 0 }
   stretch  = TRUE
   overlay_file= Images/Range/slider-vert-prelight.png
   overlay_stretch  = FALSE
   orientation  = VERTICAL
  }
where the thermer may want to stretch the overlay or

 image
{
  function  = BOX
  state = NORMAL
  detail= spinbutton_up
  recolorable   = TRUE
  file  = Images/Spin/spin-up-bg.png
  border= { 2, 2, 2, 2}
  stretch   = TRUE
  overlay_file  = Images/Spin/arrow-up.png
  overlay_stretch   = FALSE
}

where you might want to stretch the arrow somehow and use some specific
image for bg. Still it is very uncommon to do so :) If the creator want
he can open the file and edit this manually.

As you say a GUI that creates a template folder with template svgs
(probably with example content in them) would be perfect along with that
rect that the designer specifies to be a border.

No problem ;) I can recommend this theme too for inclusion in the
community-themes package.

James if you have time you could desaturate a bit the highlight at the
corners so that they are equally strong colors with the top highlight thus
merge into one. Besides that I have no further remarks.

I think the theme is quite finished. The only thing I'm not sure about is
the lack of highlights at the top corners of the metacity that makes it
unfinished. Maybe it iw wanted but I would make the highlights to see how
they would look like and then choose what to use.

This time I agree with the others. There are some things to note that
probably will improve the looks of the gdm:
* Than bg color is not cool. Desaturate the reds in it or make it lighter.
* This checker style is not ok imo. If you remove these the user list will
look much better and as as one interconnected whole.
* I would try the white bg f the glow to be some different color (lighter
brown that would look transparent).

These assumptions are just my point of view. I like more the previous design
with the enchantments you have done though.

2009-08-11 Thread Anton Kerezov
I really don't understand you guys. You should be happy that something is
happening and it looks cool and matches every possible theme the user might
choose afterwords because it is as neutral as possible (BW). I can't see
how the current GDM is better that the proposed one? The new style just
feels modern and will definitely not be liked by many but many others will
enjoy it. That is just a start and if implemented it will develop and become
better over time just as every theme, program or whatever product. As this
is only a mockup we will have to wait for a real release to be able to
criticise more.

Just my 2 cents

There are certainly things that I don't like too but I'm just curious to
know how would they implement that glow and all other things. That is pretty
impossible right now (at least I don't a way to do it). Also that dialogs
and windows have inconsistent shadows and highlight, seem rather flat, the
active item does not feel right with it's vast white bg but it is a starting
point. If somebody can implement that then it would be very easy to add some
gradient to the active items or tune up shadows and transparencies. That was
my point.

[ubuntu-art] New Wave User Requests

2009-07-16 Thread Anton Kerezov
Hello everybody,

This thread is about telling me what you would like to have
changed/added in New Wave so that it better fits your needs. Fell free
to express everything.

Not everything that is requested thought will be included because first
I'll have to make sure it will be of benefit to everybody else using the
theme. So here is a list of things that are already changed and will
make it in 0.8.1:

 - Combobox fix in Open Office and other apps that use the old format
option-box.
 - Brasero notifications fix.
 - Scrollbars inside OO and FF are much better looking and integrating.
 - Metacity improvements for dialog windows (bottom line in titlebar and
modal dialogs look different). unfortunately these additions do not show
when you use compiz.

you are already using it via Ubuntu 9.04). If you still don't have it
you could download it for test from here:

1) https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/New_Wave
2) http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/New+Wave?content=87134

P.S. I hope you enjoy using the theme.

[ubuntu-art] New Wave metacity on Jaunty

making the metacity look very ugly. Does anybody knows a way to fix this?

 You need to cite specifics. ;) Bets way to rub me wrong is say it's
 bad without giving info to back your opinion.;)

Well it looks too blurry and the front pane looks as if it's shrinking by
going up.
See this old new wave screenshot. It has an experimental folder icon in it's
left corner:

I have made this long ago and I don't keep the sources but my idea is
generally that. The colors may be further tweaked.

 It's an uphill battle but one anyone can win

In that case I might join the competition ;)

 Yes. I would say for 1 the inside of the folder is too gray. There's
 also a softness here that doesn't fit Sebastien's (nor the current
 folder icons) crisp feel.

I'm only talking about the degree of openness here and that the edges are in
diff position than the back side. But it wasn't as blurry as the previous
folder icon in the wiki I must say.

Btw is that crisp enough?

 Bring it on! :P

 I gotta say though, this is really gonna be a opinion thing here. I'll
 try to get as wide a opinion as I can before I make a switch. Opinions
 from heads at Canonical will also have some weight.

This version with arrows is specially for Ubuntu's defaults because Open Office

@ Seba
 My only (tiny) critic it's that the tabs on the Firefox theme have a
 different close button from the rest of the applications.
 Of course, that we could add your button to the Breathe theme ;) But
 if someone use a different icon theme the button remains the same.

The firefox theme is only beta plus it would probably not be included in
Ubuntu. But if Kenneth decides I will polish it some more and will
provide a better version with some more tweaks and fixes. I'm providing
it now in order for easier firefox fixing and integration.

@ Dodol
Use the theme with dark menus and you will have no problem with OO.

 2) A rounded text box in the panel gets surrounded by straight edges.
 So there is this white border around it (I am talking about the
 dictionary applet).

Thank you for the feedback.

1) It would be nice indeed but the image used for panels could not be
stretched due to limitation of Gnome. So I'm using one universal image
for top/bottom and all sized panels. If I make a highlight at the top of
the image for the bottom panel it would be ugly in the top panel. i
think that the panels stand out by their darker color and in the same
time are usable.

2) This is also a problem with GTK because the text control could not
have transparent backgrounds (the white pixels left) thus I'm using the
most appropriate color for the control to fit it's usual (light grey or
white) background. You cannot see this in clearlooks because the panel
is light. Also the pixmap engine is known for not such a great
flexibility when it comes to integration and merging of widgets.

Probably it is possible to make a exception matching for textboxes in
panels but that would not solve the problem on other dark backrounds.

 Here goes:

  - Really polished, probably the best version hitherto. Super work overall.

Thank you :)

  - The scrollbars are very experimental and they work well on some
 widgets and not so good on others. It is very good for embedded lists
 and tree views, but not so good on fx. GMail's embedded text editor
 (which I am using as I write this :-)). Another problematic case is
 when the scrollbar is on the right. You can try this out in Gnome
 Terminal by configuring the Scrolling tab in its profile. I don't
 know how RTL languages lay out the scrollbars...

I agree that there are some apps that ignore the rules of positioning
the scrollbars but you can get used to it. Even if it is only scrollbar
it preserves it's shape and general sunken look at the left side.

  - Have you experimented with some kind of left edge on the scrollbar.
 The problem is that it appears a bit floating the widget on the left
 of it does not provide a natural border (again see embedded GMail
 editor).

You mean right edge? No I haven't experimented because my purpose is to
cut lines in order to make the interface look simpler. I have done this
because ppl use the only slider to drag the contents up and down and the
arrows very rarely. That is why I decided the right lines are not
necessary at all.

  - Looking at The Widget Factory It looks like the text entries in
 GtkCombo does not align pixel perfect with their arrow-buttons (there
 seems to be some cruft in the right corners of the entries).
 GtkComboBoxEntry looks good though.

I know for this but don't know how to match (in the gtkrc) the entry of
the combo in order to make it with better shape to fit the button
(currently drawn: normal entry + partial button). If you know smth I'll
be glad to hear it.

Well I'm not real gui designer either but I'm trying my best at creating
usable themes. Regarding the progressbar it is usually so rapidly moving
that you don't see anything. In the cases you see it I want to attract the
attention of the user to the part that is moving forward by making it more
orange.

@ Sebastian

 I really like the new scrollbars too, but I'm not sure about the decision
 to make them without the arrows. I guess I just have to try and see.
 One thing that I would add it's a focus state for the text fields. Maybe an
 orange border like the buttons.
 Overall, I love New Wave.

Well the arrows are not a big problem because without them the interface
looks much more consistent and because we all use the scroll wheel or drag
the sliders instead of clicking on arrows. I have made a special version of
arrow states that will fit the new scrollbars and everybody will be able to
turn them on/off by simly modifying 2 lines of the gtkrc file. I wish there
was some small graphical python utility to do that but I have no experience
at this.

This looks ok but when a I saw it I had an idea - pure white Ubuntu logo
with black outline for dark themes would look very good (though some ppl
will say it's a mac thing) and in white ones could still be visible. Making
such a logo is very difficult as you don't know where the button will be
(top/bottom of the window) and you cannot make specific versions of it. Also
you don't have control of where that dropdown arrow appears.

Good work Sebastian! I like them.Only if I can make some tips: I think that
the iconset should not only be constrained by orange as some people have
said earlier but to all available colors. I like the folder cab indeed but
at smaller sized I prefer it to be closed so that We could have a cleaner
icon.

Happy Holidays,

You have probably seen that there are some apps (Open Office and
Firefox) that need further tuning. Does anybody know how to fix them

anyone that can help me make a theme for Firefox?

I like the games one but the brush handle on the graphics is too
unprofessional looking. Probably wooden would be better imo. You could
add some more detail to the paint tube too to make it more realistic.

 Sorry, NewWave is older than Dust! Maybe you should ask: Does the word
 NewWave come to mind? when seeing Dust...

Kevin you said your words unprepared here. As proof to François's
opinion I post a link with and image. You could see the date the
attachment was added - a long long way before dust existed:

This type of window top was a concept that I used to develop in May this
year and stopped but now I plan to start working on it again.

As far as the min/max/x buttons they are going to be changed because the
current ones are too strange for most of the people. Probably I'm going
to make them all the same height as some have suggested.

 Something like this may work though, assume rect(t, r, b, l) gives

 /* Draw the button itself, from the image that includes the `aura'. */
 GtkButton[has-default=true][has-focus=true] {
border-image: url(theme.svg#button-default-focused) 8 9 6 9;
-moz-image-region: rect(t, r, b, l);

 /* Draw the `aura' (aka focus indicator). */
 GtkButton[has-default=true][has-focus=true]  gtk-focus-indicator {
border-image: url(theme.svg#button-default-focused) 8 9 6 9;

 Need to try and find out how it works out. Also `-moz-image-region'

I wish I knew CSS so that I can make a theme using the new engine. It seems
to handle these default things good as well as it may turn out to be very
feature rich after some months of theme experiments.

[ubuntu-art] New Wave Question

2008-11-26 Thread Anton Kerezov
Hi all,

I haven't been writing in the mailing list for some long time but now I
have PC and Internet connection so I can continue my work on New Wave
theme. I may not be able to spare as much time as before but the work on
the theme will continue.

Now I'm working on newer version that is going to have some enchanters
such as animation-like behaviour of check and option buttons as well as
better focus system (images). One thing that bothers me and other people
though is the menubar+titlebar looking too flat or strange. So I'd like
you to help me with some ideas. I'm thinking of adding some kind of
texture but I don't know what. Plese share your opinion freely. Every
word could be the key to some inspiration!

That was the intended look of the window top. But many people think that
it is some kind of strange top-bottom gradient. What should I do to
convince all people that this is behind the window(like another one that
is holding the content)? Probably I should increase the border at left
and right?

 Of course, this is my opinion, and I'm a fan of the Dust theme, so
 take it with a grain of salt. ;)

I agree with Rico but I think you could do it better. IMHO it needs some
more depth and detail to the front plan (the ibex and the rocks). Maybe
you can add the silhouette of grass or high mountain plants. The light
rays just behind the ibex remind me of a rain wall that is pouring out
of the sky (hope you know what I mean). And if that are going to be
storm clouds they need more volume and light touches to give them more
materialism.

 I really like it! Especially the fact that there is a gdm and un-lock
 theme! I believe there is an icon theme somewhere on lauchpad but I
 don't know how to get it?

You should be able to get the icon theme by branching from bzr using a
command like 'bzr branch lp:~ubuntu-new-wave/anton/devel.icons'. For
more info look here (the Get this branch label):
https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-new-wave/anton/devel.icons

 The un-lock theme is great, but is the black thick border around it
 normal?

Well no but there is currently no way to do this otherwise with round
corners that are transparent. I may decrease the size of the border but
it would still not be perfect.

 I've seen a bug but I can't screen-cap it: on the GDM theme, in
 French, the first of the three bottom-left buttons reads mise en
 veille, on two lines, and the first word, mise, is hidden
 underneath the button.

 Yann Dìnendal

Check if this is the same bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/anton/+bug/265079

Otherwise do you find any bugs in the gtk theme? Anything odd? Its
better to tell me now because in a few days I'm leaving town and won't
be able to fix them any time soon (university stuff :) )
