I for one don't like textures in my theme. Especially in New Wave which is a

[ubuntu-art] New Wave 0.8.1 RC Pack

2009-07-28 Thread Antonio
Hi all,

I'd like to show you the latest New Wave that fixes some bugs and comes
with configurator GUI. For the changes refer to the README file in the
pack. I am showing the pack in order to get some opinions on the
Configurator GUI and behaviour. I'd like to ask those that test it to
help me and give feedback on these topics:

 - If the theme works with Eclipse/Lotus Notes?
 - Is the Configurator working as expected? Reading root theme files
(copy provided themes to /usr/share/themes/ as they are the only
supported right now)?
 - If you set tool-tip time-out to 990ms and play a song in Rhythmbox is
the tool-tip of the playing song appearing.
 - Does the Configurator show the icon in the main extracted folder?

You can find the pack here:

[ubuntu-art] New Wave configurator

2009-07-20 Thread Antonio
Hi everyone,

I'm developing a New Wave Configurator that will allow you to easily
modify some of the settings of New Wave that are not available in the
Appearance dialog. Here are some screenshots:

Selector dialog:

Main window:

I want to know if this is easy enough to understand by every user and if
the options are enough. Every feedback is welcomed even I encourage
criticism.

I'd suggest:

Scrollbar arrow buttons at:

Tooltips appear after [920 +-] ms

Note: units should follow after entries.

Drop the Nautilus.

Well it would be good if there is only one path where the theme is

Me thank you :) Making another theme with different color is possible

Well - mode color versions - the Blue version like Blue Wave, possibility to
switch to normal ( old ) combo-box style for opening / listing options for
all applications ( because is better - Gnome does not do a better thing with
the new combo-boxes opening style from an Usability point of view, also
the new style has not a good implementation ), possibility to choose where
the arrows for scrollbars will stay ( 1 up, 1 down ; both down; etc )

Globally is one of the best Gnome modern themes - simply and elegant - not
bloated, and with unity of style. Normally I switch between Redmond and New
Wave, Blue Wave, and New Flow Wave which implement a colored state for the
active tab which is a very good / usable addition to New Wave.

 Hello everybody,

I would like to announce the release of New Wave 0.8.0 (although some of
you are already using it via Ubuntu 9.04). If you still don't have it
you could download it for test from here:

 1) https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/New_Wave
 2) http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/New+Wave?content=87134

P.S. I hope you enjoy using the theme.

Great work Anton. You perseverance and energy in working on New Wave

I love new wave. It makes me feel sexy when I use my desktop. And when
it all breaks down, this is how everybody wants to feel. I am not
inserting a smiley face here (as I would have done) because I actually

This is a very interesting approach to the interface: that it should
look good in times of crisis. The verity of your comment would not have
registered if not for the following coincidence: I've decided to play
around with fluxbox and I still haven't gotten the gnome-settings-daemon
up, which means I am writing this in the ugly default GTK+ theme.
Although I am getting things done, my desktop's present ugliness is an
overwhelming nuisance.

You can add lines like these to the end of the index.theme:

ApplicationFont=sans 18
DocumentsFont=sans 18
DesktopFont=sans 18
WindowTitleFont=sans 18
MonospaceFont=monospace 18

I do *not* suggest doing this because although one font size might look good
on your desktop it definitely will not look good on all desktops. This is a bug
in the selection of the font by the installer (or whatever) and I suggest you
report it if it isn't already. On my system the fonts were larger than before,
so setting large fonts in the theme wouldn't help me at all ;)

The sliders should not be as dark as the metacity because if
they are they will attract too much attention and will not be usable.

The will look even better without the up and down arrows from the gtkrc.
This version with arrows is specially for Ubuntu's defaults because Open Office
does not
display sliders if they don't have steppers (very strange if you ask me).

I just downloaded the theme and I'm loving the new stuff.
My only (tiny) critic it's that the tabs on the Firefox theme have a

Of course, that we could add your button to the Breathe theme ;) But if

Anyway, the theme it's fantastic.

 have some depth.

 2) A rounded text box in the panel gets surrounded by straight edges.
So there is this white border around it (I am talking about the
 dictionary applet).

Thank you for the feedback.

1) It would be nice indeed but the image used for panels could not be
stretched due to limitation of Gnome. So I'm using one universal image
for top/bottom and all sized panels. If I make a highlight at the top of
the image for the bottom panel it would be ugly in the top panel. i
think that the panels stand out by their darker color and in the same
time are usable.

2) This is also a problem with GTK because the text control could not
have transparent backgrounds (the white pixels left) thus I'm using the
most appropriate color for the control to fit it's usual (light grey or
white) background. You cannot see this in clearlooks because the panel
is light. Also the pixmap engine is known for not such a great
flexibility when it comes to integration and merging of widgets.

Probably it is possible to make a exception matching for textboxes in
panels but that would not solve the problem on other dark backrounds.

'sudo apt-get install p7zip' saved my day :-)

Here goes:

 - Really polished, probably the best version hitherto. Super work overall.

 - I think the scrollbar color is good - that is: I disagree with some
of the other commenters who found it too subdued

 - The scrollbars are very experimental and they work well on some
widgets and not so good on others. It is very good for embedded lists
and tree views, but not so good on fx. GMail's embedded text editor
(which I am using as I write this :-)). Another problematic case is
when the scrollbar is on the right. You can try this out in Gnome
Terminal by configuring the Scrolling tab in its profile. I don't
know how RTL languages lay out the scrollbars...

 - Have you experimented with some kind of left edge on the scrollbar.
The problem is that it appears a bit floating the widget on the left
of it does not provide a natural border (again see embedded GMail
editor).

 - But to make it clear - really, really, great work!

 - Looking at The Widget Factory It looks like the text entries in
GtkCombo does not align pixel perfect with their arrow-buttons (there
seems to be some cruft in the right corners of the entries).
GtkComboBoxEntry looks good though.

I agree that there are some apps that ignore the rules of positioning
the scrollbars but you can get used to it. Even if it is only scrollbar
it preserves it's shape and general sunken look at the left side.

You mean right edge? No I haven't experimented because my purpose is to
cut lines in order to make the interface look simpler. I have done this
because ppl use the only slider to drag the contents up and down and the
arrows very rarely. That is why I decided the right lines are not
necessary at all.

I know for this but don't know how to match (in the gtkrc) the entry of
the combo in order to make it with better shape to fit the button
(currently drawn: normal entry + partial button). If you know smth I'll
be glad to hear it.

Well the horizontal progressbar is only experimental right now (yes it's
new) but it seems to integrate well for now. What do you think about it?
Thorsten Wilms did not liked it but I think it is just fine. On the other

Difficult to say, unless seen in action. But from the static preview, my

however the current horizontal progressbar, I note, takes up too little

Hi, Anton.
Great work!
I really like the new scrollbars too, but I'm not sure about the decision to
make them without the arrows. I guess I just have to try and see.
One thing that I would add it's a focus state for the text fields. Maybe an
orange border like the buttons.
Overall, I love New Wave.
Keep up the good work!

Well I'm not real gui designer either but I'm trying my best at creating
usable themes. Regarding the progressbar it is usually so rapidly moving
that you don't see anything. In the cases you see it I want to attract the
attention of the user to the part that is moving forward by making it more
orange.

Well the arrows are not a big problem because without them the interface
looks much more consistent and because we all use the scroll wheel or drag
the sliders instead of clicking on arrows. I have made a special version of
arrow states that will fit the new scrollbars and everybody will be able to
turn them on/off by simly modifying 2 lines of the gtkrc file. I wish there
was some small graphical python utility to do that but I have no experience
at this.

This type of window top was a concept that I used to develop in May this
year and stopped but now I plan to start working on it again.

As far as the min/max/x buttons they are going to be changed because the
current ones are too strange for most of the people. Probably I'm going
to make them all the same height as some have suggested.

Anton, I have to say that I like the old New Wave min/max/close better than
the one you implemented here. I feel the shape is just too jagged. I do like
the buttons a lot.

For the min/max perhaps instead of making the shape smaller, you could
extend it to cover the entire min/max/close as the same size.

Keep up the good work!

The flat style titlebar with the nice techy close, minimize and maximize
looks great in my opinion. What i think is that this flat style doesn't
really fit with the gradient scrollbar and gui styles. The titlebar
could looks like the texture/gradient of the scrollbar.
Or everything has the same flat darkstyle like the titlebar.

If you want look like os x window style, decent dark metallic texture
would be nice too.

Personally i like flat styles.

That was the intended look of the window top. But many people think that

I really like it! Especially the fact that there is a gdm and un-lock theme!
I believe there is an icon theme somewhere on lauchpad but I don't know how

The un-lock theme is great, but is the black thick border around it normal?
I've seen a bug but I can't screen-cap it: on the GDM theme, in French, the
first of the three bottom-left buttons reads mise en veille, on two lines,
and the first word, mise, is hidden underneath the button.

Hi, Anton.
First of all, sorry for my lack of contribution to the icon theme but I
didn't find the time to put the effort that deserves it.
Right now, I'm waiting for the community theme to get going and see what can
I contribute there, and I'm making some icons just for practicing :) You can

About the theme, I think that looks great. The changes you make from the

I must say, however, that I like better the previous metacity buttons than
the ones in 0.6. Right now it's my ony complain.

Thanks. However I changed the metacity buttons because people were not
happy with the previous version. The new one is more form specific and
should be used without desktop effects enabled because when they are on
additional buttons are added to each window that sometimes results in
not such a beautiful view. I will add the old version to gnome-look so
that everybody can choose what he wants to use.

to make it good enough for the 0.6. You can try it out by downloading it
from here:
http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/New+Wave?content=87134

or here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/NewWave#Download

If you find out anything that you consider is not good or is odd please
let me know.

[ubuntu-art] New Wave on Gnome-Look.org

2008-08-14 Thread Anton Kerezov
I've posted the theme at gnome-look.org to get a better idea of the
acceptance of the theme. Here's the link:

That's because (as said in the instructions) the pack contains a theme
and other folders for emerald and compiz. First extract the Beta Pack
and then you could install the new-wave050.tar.gz.

Re: [ubuntu-art] New Wave new version available

2008-08-14 Thread Dylan McCall
Anton, I love how you have made the Nautilus side bar bearable to look
at. Lots of themes make the side bar white except for the drag handle,
which looks really bad. The squared off buttons are a nice departure
from the round widgets which have become 'the norm'. I think they look
good!
This avoids all those dumb jagged corners on the windows, among other things.

Is that shadow on the bottom border new? It's a good addition, because
before the shadows on the Metacity theme risked being (while
attracive) inconsistent with the shadows everywhere else. It may be a
good idea to run Metacity with its compositor turned on and try to
have the theme's shadows match what Metacity's compositor does.

I think the orange highlight on selected widgets is just the right
touch of Ubuntuish orangeness.

Good work!

Anton, make sure you update the theme. Gnome look moves pretty fast
and even if every single person votes up your theme it will only hit
60 or 70 by the time it fades into page 6+ obscurity. The only way to
get an accurate count is to bump your theme to the front page a few
times with updates.

Nor true. I have created themes that I published on gnome-look.org that
got rated 80+ without bumping them deliberately.
See for example my oxygen-port which I only updated once (81%).

If people like it they will vote it good instantly.

I will leave it as is now because a lot of updates will be coming in
short periods of time and it will sort of naturally update to first
page. Later on if the theme is not very popular i will use this
advertisement method you proposed ;)

This theme looks similar to a theme that I use (Out of 50+ themes I can't
find anything I like better) called NiteLight Gnome
http://ebupof.deviantart.com/art/NiteLite-GNOME-Pack-90872564. It's a good
thing that people are starting to make more black and white themes. I doubt,
however, it would go over well with Canonical.

By active you mean pressed, right? Or you mean default buttons that are
activated when you press Enter?

Yes, I meant pressed, although different styles can be applied for every
status (active, selected with the tab touch, hovered, pressed...), with a
bit of colour (orange, obviously) on important ones.

I think that is absolutely brilliant. I love the drop shadow onto the
menu. It separates the menu and the top bar while still adding a feel
of consistency to the whole thing. I like the orange buttons, but
perhaps only on hover (if that's possible)? Though I think either way
is fine. The only problem I see in that screenshot is the
emerald/metacity drop shadow. It might just be a glitch on your
computer, but about one quarter of the way down the drop shadow kinda
cuts off. It might be a driver issue. I think I'm going to switch to
it as my default theme next time I'm on a gnome computer, I think it's
looking great so far.

Thanks man! I'm very glad you like it. The glitch is from emerald and if
I upgrade to newer version I hope the glitch will disappear.

I decided to give the widgets more details and started a revamp. Here is

The button and the scrollbar (plus the range) are the images that are
made by aother person - Francois. Can you make a mockup of a button with
everything you thing should be in. I'm having difficulties with the
button image because it's the most important one and I do not know how
to make it. But I will have a try to redesign it myself.

Also there are some complaints from GTK:

I've seen these but I do not know how to fix them because the symbolic
color is present in the main file and the image is in the dir. The panel
constant exists too but it is in different file. Any ideas?
