Re: Warning Messages when installing updates
It probably isnt terrible, because its a WARNING not a an ERROR or a FATAL, i dont know what the warning is from or for though. Does it happen when a specific package is being updated? or when a certain package is part of the update? Hey Jared, That would be awesome, i only know roughly how translations work (im an app dev, not a translator). IRC Classroom Sessions
Hey all, Some good news, i have time now (lots) to get the Classroom sessions i promised going, i first need some info though: Can anyone who is interested in these sessions please reply with answers to these questions: a) When would the sessions be best for you? (date/time) b) What topics would you like to see in the sessions? (please suggest more than one if you can) Be aware, i plan to run the sessions over IRC, since i am on the other side of the country. Any other idea's or suggestions are welcome as is anyone who wishes to help me run one or more of the sessions. I am willing to run sessions about anything i can, including Ubuntu Development, App development, Basics of Ubuntu, Using the Terminal, programming, etc. Although i will NOT be running sessions where users ask for support because they are having hardware issues, etc. That is what the support channels are for. Please ask if you have any other questions about this. Ryan Macnish (nisshh) -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au

Hello there, It seems its rather complicated to install the Intel Fortran compiler under Ubuntu/Linux, although if you jump on IRC (Internet Relay Chat) and connect to irc.freenode.net and the channel #ubuntu-au, i can help you out in real time, which may be easier for you. Some instructions are here, although you may not understand much of that since you have no Linux experience: http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/using-intel-compilers-for-linux-with-ubuntu/ <http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/using-intel-compilers-for-linux-with-ubuntu/>and you can chat to me and others from the LoCo team by reading the information here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AustralianTeam/IRC Hope this helps Ryan Macnish (nisshh on irc) On Wed, Dec 22, 2010 at 7:44 PM, thisara welhena wrote: > Hi , > I am new to the Ubuntu . Post-meeting Mail
Ok, so i will leave the issue of the IRC structure alone, its clear that some of the loco veterans dont want change, even for the benefit of the loco. But also if i bring it up again i may get kicked from the loco. So now we have that sorted, i am agreeing not to bring up any more issues about the loco that need discussing, because its evident that some people in the loco are disturbed by this. So you will hear no more complaints nor see any more action from me on this front. As for the social stuff, if everyone just announces meetings and events on the social platform of their choice (be that facebook, identica, diaspora or whatever) then people will re-tweet it and know about it, so we may get more activity and participation. Even things like Urban Terror and stuff should be announced. Thanks, Ryan Macnish (nisshh) -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au

LoCo Day
I am asking this on the mailing list, because the LoCo Day is pretty much the day after the meeting. The classroom team have organised an event called LoCo day, where heaps of LoCo's come together and hold sessions about LoCo stuff (like an Open Week for LoCo's). I want to know if we want to participate, i will be present and asking questions regardless. I think this would be a perfect opportunity to gather together and have some fun, while also getting advice and tips about fixing up our own crippled loco. The LoCo Day event spans over 3 days (December 17th - 19th), so if you think we should participate, please reply BEFORE about the 10th of December or so. I do not want to hear any "I think we should participate, but i'm not going to", we are a group, so we should all pitch in and do this. If you guys want to get re-approved, we need to do something! IRC fortnightly sessions
Hello everyone, Just a quick post to say that i have done up a quick page for what was discussed at the meeting here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AustralianTeam/Projects/Classroom Please add your name to the table on that page if you wish to be an instructor for a session. For now i have set myself as the "Session Contact" so that the classroom managers have someone to contact in case they need to. I am currently organising the use of #ubuntu-classroom for this purpose, which is looking promising. I was also told about Loco Day which is held just before christmas this year, it is something i think we should look into participating in. Re: Open USB IO Module
Ok, that shouldnt be hard, to boot from the livecd all you need to do is boot up normally, insert the livecd into the cd drive, reboot the computer and during boot it should come up with something like "Press any key to boot from CD-ROM", this all depends on your BIOS though, since different BIOS's do different things. (for instance, my BIOS just boots from the CD, it doesnt even ask me to press a key) If no message like that comes up at boot and your computer just boots normally, it means your boot order in the BIOS needs to be tweaked. To get back out of the livecd, simply shutdown the computer and while its shutting down, remove the cd from the drive, then turning on the computer will boot it normally again. Geoffrey, Excellent, just so you know the command 'chmod +x ousb' just makes it executable, i just said to do that first just in case it wasnt already set to executable. When you run it, nothing will happen visually and you will get returned to the prompt after a second. But it is working, so that is fine. Hi Geoffrey, The default directory for the terminal is NOT the desktop, it is your home directory, i suggest you put that executable in your home directory, then open a terminal and execute these commands: chmod +x ousb ./ousb It should then either ask you some questions or install it for you. Re: Suddenly failed to connect
Hi David, Looking at the ifconfig output there, it appears your wife isn't getting an IP address assigned to her computer, first i would check her connection settings, to do this head to the upper right corner of the desktop and you will see all those icons in the panel, hover your mouse over each one until you get a tooltip that says something like 'Wired connection 'eth0' active'. Right click on that icon and select Edit Connections, then select eth0 (or whichever one she normally connects with) and hit the edit button. Then just go through and make sure she has the same setting's as you do. Specifically make sure she is using DHCP automatically. Sorry if the above doesn't make complete sense, i try to be as clear as possible. Let us know how it goes. Re: Promoting Ubuntu
Hi Paul, The Meetings wiki page is probably immutable because you aren't logged in when you visit that page (look in the top right hand corner of the page), if you still aren't able to edit the wiki page, please come and see us on IRC in #ubuntu-au on irc.freenode.net. If it comes to it, one of us will be happy to add your item to the agenda, although anyone is supposed to be able to edit that wiki page. Re: substitute for flash on linux 10.04 (desktop)
Sure, there are two alternatives to Flash that i know of, one is called Gnash and the other is called Lightspark, which dont work with as many websites as flash, but are getting better all the time. But no i am NOT going to tell you how to bypass your schools blocker to download torrents, that is not what this loco is here for, sorry. Re: substitute for flash on linux 10.04 (desktop)
I am a bit confused by the title and then what you said after that. Can you clarify for me: Do you want an alternative to Adobe Flash? OR Do you want to run a Windows program on Ubuntu? Sorry, just need to know this before i know exactly what you want. Re: Tech support
I agree, it does look pretty bad having that on the mailing list. Ian, if you have any ideas (if anyone does!) please share them, id love to hear any ideas people have for improving the loco. To get the ball rolling, i will go and do some research RIGHT NOW. I am going to go and see what some of the other LoCo's are doing to keep activity and organisation nice and streamlined. I think we can learn from others, and collaborate with others and each other to improve our loco and get it re-approved, i really really want this to happen, so instead of just talking i am going to go and get started. So, if you agree with me and Ian, come and join in the effort to rebuild our once awesome loco. Re: printer and internet wired or wireless doesn't work
Hello, Ok, first of all: 1) try rebooting, i cant give you better instructions for this, since i dont use Kubuntu. 2) That printer probably just needs setting up in Kubuntu's preferences, again i cant help, i dont use Kubuntu. 3) This i can help with, you see, a .exe file cant be run in Kubuntu just like that, .exe is a *windows only format, *to use that software you will have to install the program called wine, which allows you to run windows applications in Kubuntu (on linux basically). Also i am fairly sure there is piano tuning software available for Kubuntu, if you do a search when installing software, and have a poke around you should be able to find some. Sorry i cant be of more help, i dont use Kubuntu so i have not much of an idea about what configures what. Re: Pando on Linux
Ok, first install the dependancies it lists there, some of which you should already have install because of Ubuntu. If you want a system-wide install you need to copy the contents of the tar.bz2 file into the /usr/local/bin directory, if you dont want a system-wide install, just put the contents of that file into your home directory. For step 2: all you need to do is run this in a terminal for a system-wide install: export PANDO_HOME=/usr/bin/local/pandodl OR wherever you put the 'pandodl' directory. As for the values in the config file: Unless you are using a proxy ignore the proxy values, and for the other two values i would have a look at Pando's docs for those. Hmm, its closed source windows only software. The only advice i can give you is to try it in wine. Good luck. You have to load up a link to a blog? You should be getting all the list mail by email, unless you have it turned off in your subscriber preferences. RE: Metrocracy vs democracy
Andrew, None of us really want a meritocracy, but we want the same structure that option 1a gives us. It was named the wrong way apparently, which is why you probably think we are all going with a meritocracy, but we are not. I thought everyone already agreed on a model of election. But it seems we haven't just yet, this is something that should be discussed next meeting. Ubuntu AU LoCo Restructure Poll
Hey everyone, So, iv made a poll and iv made it so you can only select ONE option, although you can change your selection that is irrelevant since its not possible to vote multiple times using the same name. If you fake it and want to try my patience, then so be it. http://www.doodle.com/zift4eahcy3mrvv9 Ryan Macnish _ Need a new place to live? Im certainly interested in this idea, its easy to do, helps ubuntu out, and helps the ubuntu-au members to get to know each other. That is one of the failings of having only one person for contact for the whole of Australia. There really should be several. That's actually a good suggestion. I tried to start something like that here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AustralianTeam/ContactUs/UnofficialLocalContacts It's looking pretty empty at the moment. The concept of meritocracy is a literary fantasy and on par with many esoteric doctrines designed to establish superiority over the ignorant. Please abandon this concept. It has no right to exist and the way it has been used in the Ubuntu community smacks of autocracy in disguise. Like it or not, meritocracy is the way the Free Software development community works (and by extension, a lot of the rest of the Free Software community). Being dismissive of it will not help you gain favour with the LoCo council, and there is no way it will ever be abandoned as a practice. I was quite embarrassed by your letter to the LoCo Council. To me it seemed dismissive and untruthful. Again, in your post below, I read of matters totally foreign to me. Either I have not been paying attention or your inventive skills are finely honed. Andre, the time for finger-pointing and name-calling has passed. Now is the time to show your strength by 1) getting over it, and 2) doing something positive to make it better. RE: Australian LoCo Re-Approval Application
Hey all, I have been watching these events unfold for a number of weeks now and i have slowly become convinced that something MUST be done, someone MUST act, so i am posting this to put the suggestion out there: Why dont we hold an IRC meeting and sort all this mess out? surely you all still want to be recognised as a LoCo? Im sitting in #ubuntu-au and #ubuntu-au-chat right now if anyone wants to join me. We indeed formed a group outside of LoCo, and since debate failed, decided it would be best to contact them separately on the issues involved, since it did not do any good raising them on the list. Maybe it took this to happen for certain people to be convinced. I think I remember someone trying to tell me there was only 4 of "us" that disagreed with the current leadership / structure / everything.
