Re: Mounting Floppies

2010-11-03 Thread Scott Evans
Just check to see if you have the following,

ls /media
cdrom cdrom0 floppy floppy0

The following are symlinks, cdrom floppy, they just point to the directories
ending in 0.

If there isn't a floppy/floppy0 just create them (as superuser) then see if you
can mount the floppy. My desktop is floppy(less!) So I'm not 100% sure if this
will fix the problem. My server was installed using ubuntu server edition
(8.10) and these directories/symlink were created on install.

Hi James...

I have a HP c4480, I believe this is the model above from the one you
have (or its replacement) I have no issues using any of the functions.

Can you try 2 things...

1. open your web browser and type in 'localhost:631' this is the CUPS
interface and see if your printer is listed there and that its on line
etc...

2. if their are multiple entries for the printer remove them all and
then plug it in again to see if that may remedy the situation.

HP printers are generally hassle free under Linux ;-)

Although I'm on Debian these days I had both my HP printers running
without issue under Ubuntu.

Re: HOW TO: Netcomm NB9WMAXX and Firewall

2010-07-16 Thread Scott Evans

The main thing is that unless you need ANY ports open on your
modem/router then you are fin behind the NAT you only expose yourself if
you are running a service that requires something/someone to connect to
it. Also unless you are on a fixed IP from your ISP, then you can always
randomly switch your modem/router off/on and you would most likely be
reassigned a new IP.

and likewise about port scans, I'm not interested in scanning your
system, but I will if it would make you feel a little more comfortable
(using Nessus) if you do then just shoot me a PM (I'm expecting you to

Re: 701SD wireless

Can we just back track a little...

When the Eee PC is powered up is the blue LED active? if not then the
wireless card has been disabled with the FN + F2 key combination. Also
as previously mentioned, double check the BIOS to ensure that the
wireless is enabled (default is not enabled)

As for the make of the chip for the wireless is an Atheros type. I
have 2 Eee 701SD here, both using Lucid netbook edition and the wireless
is working just fine!

I too have an old WiFi gateway that only uses 40bit WEP (used with MAC
filtering as well) so maybe also check (or reset) the password in your
WiFi gateway (remember to update password in all other items that use
the gateway!)

re: transfer of Gramps in Hardy Heron to Lucid Lynx

2010-05-19 Thread Scott Evans
Hi...

My wife uses Gramps so I have a little knowledge that may shed some light
on your situation. Ok all your Gramps data is stored in a directory in
your home directory called .gramps Now notice the . prior to the name,
this means this is a hidden directory. So I'm hoping that when you did
your backup, you included this directory! So if you did, then once you
have Gramps installed you can then copy that hidden directory into your
home directory. You will get a prompt to update the database for each
family tree you have.

I hope that this helps out...

I've been thinking about the applicability of state-based LoCos as

assumptions), .us has 309 million persons (very rough figure from
Wikipedia) in 50 states, or approximately one LoCo per 6,180,000

It's a bit of a catch 22 either way, I had thought along similar lines

It is for this exact reason I've kept quite today! firstly, making sure

The decent and honest thing to do would have been to CCed the list their

In what way did people undermine anything? nothing was happening! Be

Lets revise and regroup

2010-05-13 Thread Scott Evans
Ok as most of you would be aware the current status of the ubuntu-au
loco. As a result of this news there has been some pointers on how to
path the way forward to regain the loco status. This gives us the
opportunity to review the current plan of how the loco was being run to
now how it will be run in the future.

At this point I ask for all ego's and anger to be left at the door, if
you feel that you can't do this then maybe you need to review your
status within the loco group as a whole, after all we all need to get
along to move forward. The last round of debate about how a potential
structure could be implemented ended in a way that simply proved (to me)
that the current people in charge of the loco were not up for new
suggestions or change. This is the first failing of the loco, we have to
evolve as the time changes or you end up with a stale non-motivated
group.

So where to go from here ?

Clearly there has been little change in the organisational structure
since the loco was first approved. This needs to change and I believe
that all rolls should be on a rotational basis, meaning that there
should be equal opportunity for all to have a turn. So what are the
current rolls that people have assigned to them? how active are they in
this roll?/how long have they had this roll?

I should state at this point I believe that all positions should be
declared open!

The rotational system that I'm suggesting should last for a period of 1
year (can be reviewed if this doesn't work) and that all that have
singed the ubuntu CoC are entitled to participate. Should one person not
have ubuntu membership (will be required for the loco contact) then as a
group we should work together to help that person gain it.

Essentially we need to work as a team not as individuals...

So can we expand on this plan and see where it can take us? all debate
is welcome ;-)

Well yes I may be, but I still wish to try...

A while ago now, I first heard the phrase the vocal minority, I
thought it was pretty clever at the time. Now it gets used whenever a
groups leadership is challenged. You see, apparently ubuntu-au locos
downfall wasn't the responsibility of the leadership, but the fault of
the vocal minority. But you won't find that said anywhere logged.

Well this is possible however I feel that the for a group to exist there
needs to be healthy discussion, this has been lacking within the -au
team for some time. As was clearly the case with Andrews proposal, some
were very quick to criticise but not put up an alternative to discuss,
instead chose to simply attempt to make the whole debate a slanging
match. This is why I believe the whole process broke down.

If you speak up, you are labeled a vocal minority, a trouble maker,
someone to watch out for, a kook.

Well I have been called a lot worse over the years! ;-)

It's coded, been down for years, let it rest in peace.

No lets attempt to make something worthy of it so the previous work has
essentially not all been for nothing.

Re: Low-end iSCSI NAS

2010-03-30 Thread Scott Evans
Although not strictly on the topic that was originally posted...

Another software option could be unRAID from Lime Tech

http://www.lime-technology.com/

There is a free version that you can use (allows 3 drives) that you can
have a play with to see if it will suit your needs then possibly (if
needed) update to other versions provided. (No I'm not a representative
for Lime Tech)

Its a Slax variation of Linux that the default NAS protocol is to use
samba file sharing (designed to work fairly seamlessly with windows
clients)

So maybe another option to consider...

Re: Ubuntu-AU Digest

2010-03-21 Thread Scott Evans
Well IMHO all this could be much easier sorted if the default behaviour
of the mailing list was set-up to reply to the list instead of the
individual. This is why most simply use reply-to-all option because the
action of reply goes direct to the poster thus then whatever one has to
say is only seen by the originator of a thread. Why mailman was set-up
this way in the first place has me beat!

I have to say that going down the path of forming an incorporated body
is NOT the way this should go! Lets keep it real and review the basic
function of the role of the Loco before re inventing the wheel.

Also (not researched) but one would think that if an incorporated body
did exist then you would possibly have a trademark violation by the use
of 'Ubuntu

So please lets not entertain this idea!

Re: Governance Structure Proposal for Ubuntu-AU

2010-03-07 Thread Scott Evans
I think that those that are showing any interest in this discussion
should be automatically flagged as having a vested interest in the
future of ubuntu-au loco. We can go around in circles forever and a day
saying that person X isn't right or person Y has got it all wrong...

@Melissa you have done a good job for your time in the position, but
have you considered that the ubuntu-au loco may have become stale and
in need of a facelift/change of guard?

For me, if there is enough people that believe that I am capable then
yes, I'll certainly put my hand up. However should it be deemed that I'm
not all I ask is for a reasonable explanation as to why, so that when
this comes up again (and I still have a interest) I know were to target
myself for improvement.

For those that may remember I posted a blog about the state of ubuntu-au

http://www.vk7hse.hobby-site.org/blog/2009/09/ubuntu-au-obsolete-or-needing-a-revamp/

So seriously, there does need to be an overall outline that can be
achieved by all of us! what ever contribution you do weather it be in
your business/private life then this needs to be considered as well. Not
all of us can or want to hold a some type of position, they will just
contribute in their own way as they see fit.

As I see it over the last few years the ubuntu-au loco has stagnated and
hasn't made much of an attempt to do more than to simply exist on the
official list (ubuntu) really if you were to compare us to some other
small loco teams one would have to seriously think about where we stand
from that view point.

So what is it we want to achieve? who are we and what do we stand for?
What is the future of the Australian ubuntu-au Loco team?

Re: Governance Structure Proposal for Ubuntu-AU

2010-03-07 Thread Scott Evans
Hi Michael...

Your input is valuable because from what you see currently (most likely)
without any prior knowledge of any disagreements (wrong word but it all
that I could think of!) between person A to person B. This is the
information needed, because for those that have been involved with
ubuntu-au from its inception may not necessarily see how its public
appearance is (healthy/unhealthy) I have to admit there really should be
more information being posted regularly to the front page with respect
to current happenings within the ubuntu community. Also for those that
are into blogs have an RSS feed syndicated into the
http://planet.ubuntu-au.org/ and there you can share information there
and attempt to get more interest in this field.

I think the strongest way that we can all contribute is to simply make
well crafted noise on the internetzs! and lets just see what we all can
achieve!

Re: Reapproval time

2010-03-06 Thread Scott Evans
Hey lets not forget that Melissa is but one person! and sadly most
things end up getting thrown back at her...

This is a chance to regroup and set out new goals and to work towards a
common goal. Also with respect to the ubuntu website, its hard when the
ubuntu-au loco team doesn't have direct access/control of that resource.

As individuals we will achieve little, as a group we have a better
chance! Also if the requirement to be a position holder within ubuntu-au
requires ubuntu membership then that in its self is going to be an issue
for most that don't have it!

Also of course there are people in the ubuntu-au/au-chat IRC that simply
are not inclined to want to be more involved than what they currently
do (this is fine!)

So is this really a call to the viability of the Australian ubuntu-au
loco?

@Melissa can you expand on what titles are in need of review?

Thoughts please?

There could be a number of reasons, the fist I think may be the hardware

Or maybe the setting in you power management need to be reviewed (just

Not guaranteed, but maybe these may help in some way... ;-)

Re: Team roadmaps - UDS Dallas

2009-12-14 Thread Scott Evans
I'm wondering if the idea is being taken the wrong way...

Is it so important to have them using ubuntu? or is it better that they
know of ubuntu? because in a perfect world we would have both! but in
the real world I think its only going to be achievable to have one at
this stage. Whilst Microsoft spends millions on advertising/vendor
incentives then it will always be an uphill battle! to add that with no
official funding as such to even compete (and it would be pointless to
even bother!) then word of mouth is our best weapon against the giant!
and certainly targeting local on-line access centres, adult-Ed etc...
would be by far more eventful than a full page spread in a daily rag!

my 2 cents worth! :-)

Re: Topic Change: Does everyone like the Koala

2009-11-14 Thread Scott Evans
Hi to all...

I have to agree on the half baked! I realise that Empathy will mature,
and maybe even surprise us all to the point of hey why didn't we use
this earlier! but sadly for me I find it irritating for IRC and have
since completely removed it and reverted back to Pidgin! (I only use
IRC, ICQ, Gtalk/Jabber!) so to loose video conferencing to me is no
big deal! I use skype for that...

Now for my Eee, I have one of the wee tiny ones! (701-SD) and the
7 (16:10) display real estate is at a premium! I initially was using
(during Alpha) the normal desktop install but settled on using the
current UNR as the sleeker UI is far more usable than the previous! and
it's nice to now be able to still use a pretty background picture and
still be able to see it!

I did have some small issues with sound, but this was soon solved by
playing with what was available (meaning what works!) and due to having
a 7.1 surround sound device after selecting it ... well hey its all
good! As for the usplash, defiantly some work needed there a plain white
ubuntu logo I think looks bloody awful after having colour for so long!
(again just my opinion!) I've since to found a nifty way to set whatever
desktop image you have to then become the default after that ugly B/W
ubuntu logo!

So if I had to rate 9.10 I'd still give it a 8 -/- 10 and for the UNR
that gets a 9 -/- 10 ...

Ubutnu has been striving to make the transition to Linux smooth, but
their approach is not going to suite everyone! the concept of
repositories for software for some is WTF! but for those of us that
have been using Linux (of any flavour) for some time, just think back to
the very first distro you ever played with, was it smooth running for
you? I certainly recall back in 1998 attempting to install Red Hat 5.2
on the PC of the day and I had nothing but trouble! mind you Linux
certainly has progressed a lot since then!

There is a lot of information on Ubuntu forums, but there is also a lot
of mis-guided information there as well, so in some sense you will be
told hey do it this way then to be told no don't do that... this is
how! etc... etc... again let recall your first experiences with Linux!

So we should respect that Linux isn't for everyone just yet! (but
hopefully one day!)

(Oh here's another thing, the default setting on this list is to reply
to the sender! not the list! so another newcomer issue there too!)

Re: Starting MySQL

2009-11-02 Thread Scott Evans

As a guess, I'd say that when you have installed the packages, when it
would have asked you to create a root password for MySQL you either just
hit enter (thus having no password!) or MySQL is only half configured.
As you don't have any data in your MySQL, if you open a terminal and
type... sudo dpkg-reconfigure mysql-server ... then just follow the
prompts.

Another useful package to use when starting out with MySQL is
PHPmyadmin, this is a PHP based web interface that you can setup on the
PC hosting the MySQL... then if this is on your PC the you access that
at http://localhost/phpmyadmin login= root password= what ever you set
it to!

Re: Ubuntu-au Obsolete? or needing a revamp?

2009-10-10 Thread Scott Evans

I've never intended for ubuntu-au to solely run by one (that's crazy!)
but my intention was to get people talking about what they may be able
to contribute. I have to admit I haven't contributed to the current wiki
brainstorm with my idea's (but I will!)

Its sad to see that a post I placed out earlier for a ubuntu release
gathering has gone completely unanswered, but I suppose that comes down
to...

A. I'm in Hobart!

B. Maybe there isn't many fellow Hobatians subscribed to ubuntu-au
mailing list

C. Maybe there isn't that many users of ubuntu that want to participate
in such events

Back to ubuntu-au...

I'd really like to see more of a presence, than what is currently... I
realise this is my own wish, but I'm certain that we could all do just a
little to ensure that ubuntu-au has a real meaning to those that call it
there own! like if you are to compare other loco teams, there is a
significant involvement in release parties and the like.

Maybe my ideas are unrealistic! :-/

Re: usb bluetooth dongles

got mine cheaper due to the windows driver CD was missing!

So I'd be inclined to shop around and find something a little cheaper! I
also have a second device that I got from Jaycar (this too was missing
box/CD) and I got that for a steal at $5 I don't have my Eee near by so
I cant recall the chip used but essentially both ones I have work fine
(out of the box!) the only issue I had was that annoying broken
bluetooth stack in Intrepid!

Ubuntu-au Obsolete? or needing a revamp?

2009-09-03 Thread Scott Evans
Is it still fair to say that Australia still has an active ubuntu
team?

It seems that the proposed monthly meeting have failed, if a call for
help goes out on #ubuntu-au it generally goes unanswered as the person
doing the asking is in need of a quick answer and possibly leaves
assuming no-one wants to help them.

Is ubuntu-au still a current valid loco team if it's essentially
inactive?

What I'm hoping to achieve here is constructive comments/criticism of
the current state of ubuntu-au and hopefully get some activity happening
again... (may just be banging my head against a brick wall!)

Now I have abandoned any future applications (already tried twice only
to be rejected) to become an ubuntu member due to the narrow minded ways
of the force! but I'm keen to make a go of making something of
ubuntu-au.

Currently the ubuntu-au mailing list averages about 25-75 spam emails a
day! and it's rare to see a valid request (from mirrored sources of this
list) also they are generally requests for help. I realise that not
everyone is at their PC 24/7 or active on IRC but if I was asked as to
the current involvement of ubuntu-au I'd be hard pressed to give an
truthful answer to it meaning as currently it achieves very little
(IMHO)

So please bring forth a plethora of suggestion/ideas comments...

I am but one... as many we are a community... lets make it happen

Re: Mobile Broadband for 9.04?

2009-08-17 Thread Scott Evans
Hi I have a simple Samsung A-412 handset, and this when connected via
the supplied USB or connected via blue tooth acts as a 3G modem!
However, make sure to know exactly what data rates you will be paying as
you could be in for a rather rude shock! my mobile is with Telstra, and
they sure know how to charge on their 3g service please take care with
this as you certainly don't wish to get a bill you may not be able to
afford!

Also some phones just work, some fully work, and others just don't! it
is still rather hit'n'miss...

Re: Entry Level Network Printer

2009-06-01 Thread Scott Evans

I agree with Paul, in that the cost of the entry level HP LaserJet
series is not too expensive! in fact you will spend way more on the
first toner refill but that's just the way of things. But I too am a fan
of HP because nearly all there printers just work in Linux!

But if you have the absolute need to use a true network printer then I
would still recommend a HP! but really you would do better hooking it up
to a PC that is on mostly all the time then just share it though CUPS,
then your other PC's on the network just connect to it using IPP...
Simple!

I have 2 HP's (6122 C4480) here and both are set up being shared via
CUPS :)

Re: HP LaserJet P1005 on/off problem

2009-05-23 Thread Scott Evans
As a guess, what version of HPLIP are you using? it may be that you need
to update it to a newer version as there could be something specific
that needs to be sent to the printer to wake it up (not sure) But I have
a all in one unit here HP-4400 and this looses the plot! if not printed
or used as a scanner, to resolve this, it just needs the power to be
cycled.

Re: HP LaserJet P1005 on/off problem

2009-05-23 Thread Scott Evans
Hi Dave,

Well CTRL+ALT+Backspace is only for restarting your X server! (except in
Jaunty requires dontzap to be installed to re-enable) I'm not 100%
familiar with the model printer that you have, but I'm assuming its a
entry level laser-jet. Do you connect this by USB? if so, you may find
that by removing the USB cable from it for 5-10 seconds then plugging it
back in that it may resume as it should. although I have just searched
the Ubuntu forums and there seems to be quite a lot of mention about
this model printer and the confusion between HP-1005 HP-P1005.

There is this link http://foo2xqx.rkkda.com/ but if you are not
comfortable with any of this then DON'T attempt this! I normally
wouldn't suggest this type of fix as it could leave you with a broken
Ubuntu, hence it is usually best for you to stick with what's in the
Ubuntu repositories as they are known to work! (but not always!) and you
have a lesser chance of complete system failure.

Another thing to try, to confirm that your printer is picked up would be
to start the PC without the printer attached, then once booted logged
in, plug the printer in and in a terminal type lsusb (without quotes!)
and see if the printer is in the listing (similar to below)

Bus 001 Device 011: ID 03f0:6c11 Hewlett-Packard
Bus 001 Device 007: ID 03f0:3404 Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 6122

This way you will know if the printer is being detected and would lead
to an issue with either HPLIP or CUPS.

Re: Hardware companies, Microsoft, Competition and Consumer Choice

2009-05-20 Thread Scott Evans
Thank you Sean, you have given a good balanced reply! I was generalising
instead of forcing my POV! But you have raised some good points, I
myself am a GNOME user but it wasn't always that way, quite a few years
back when I was tinkering with Red Hat (8) I was a KDE die hard (um if
you called someone that insisted on dual booting a die hard!) anyway...
I only started using GNOME once I started to use Ubuntu, although I have
had KDE 4.x installed at some points, I've tended to always gravitate
back to GNOME. Again this is the advantage of that Freedom we have a
Linux users! I suppose to that for the developers of a given desktop
environment it's really a case of maintaining some Identity after all
this is what makes each of them unique.

I suppose where I was attempting to come from when I mentioned too much
choice I was thinking more of the Marketing aspect, that is if you
had to select say the 10 best things about Linux some of us wouldn't
hesitate to answer! but this really does come back to what you use your
Linux for, some would only want to use it because they can! but then you
also have it where some of us use Linux because we choose to! there is a
big difference in those two cases.

As to Big question. How could this 'merge' happen? Hmm... that I think
is going to be difficult although there is a fair amount of cross
compatibility between GNOME KDE but its not to the level that you have
mentioned though.

Re: Upgrading from 8.04 to 9.04

I tend to agree with the suggestion to start afresh and go with a clean
install. When I updated my 8.10 to 9.04 due to the amount of stuff I
have on my desktop PC the upgrade was around 2Gb of downloaded data! as
compared to just 700Mb for the install CD.

Just make sure that you don't overwrite your Window$ partition! :P

RE: Hardware companies, Microsoft, Competition and Consumer Choice

2009-05-19 Thread Scott Evans

Hi to all...

One of the biggest things that I feel is that makes Linux an
unattractive alternate, there is too much choice! yes you have main
stream distributions that most tend to stick with, but then you also
have a lot of not so main stream as well. Now, don't get me wrong here,
but the issue is that to the unaware consumer just what is Linux?
something that a geek uses! and it is with this, image of Linux it
will not be taken on as a majority OS.

I actually appreciate that as an individual you have a choice! :)

Now when I recently purchased 2 Eee PC's (701SD) they came bundled with
Xandros pre-installed, I gave Xandros a run for about 2 hours then I was
installing Easy Peasy (remix of Ubuntu Intrepid) But what made me go
down this path was that although the Xandros OS was functional, upon the
first update out of the 3 repo's only one was still available (the other
2 returned 404's) so ASUS or Xandros (what ever the arrangement is) has
not maintained the repository server a mere 2 years out from the 701
initial release. For me this was simple replace Xandros with Ubuntu! but
my point being, is that even though Linux made its appearance on the
Netbook scene, its support has not been followed up (no doubt due to
lack of sales) I'm sure to that those with enough knowledge have either
replaced the default Xandros with Windows and save themselves a few
dollars in doing so.

So what is the answer to this? and how can it be changed?

Well in the short term, I don't think there is anything one can really
do to make a significant change to the status quo... However, as a
unified community I believe we can!

So back to the issue, I'm not a lawyer! but there has to be something
tucked away in the murky depths of consumer law that permits the
consumer to be able to have a choice in what they want...
