 Hi,

sorry for the dumb question first but why exactly has art.ubuntu.com
taken down in the first place?
We still have an own thread in the german Ubuntu community for it and
many people keep asking when it's coming back.

It was taken down because it was hosted externally and was one of the sites
which were recently hacked.

I think using art.ubuntu for proposals would be a great thing, because
this way we will get back an Ubuntu related artwork community but make
sure it will be high quality artwork, since it should be designed to get
 into Ubuntu only.

If you look for 'Ubuntu' on sites like gnome-look, most entries are
ripoffs with a Ubuntu logo pasted on a picture or something like this.
So it would be nice to have a place for creative people that are aiming
to get their stuff into Ubuntu but their work won't be lost, if it
 doesn't make it.

Right, but is the artwork any better on ubuntu-art.org? It is the same code as
gnome-look.org but was made just for ubuntu...not sure that having yet
another site would increase the quality of the artwork. What would probably
help things would be point to whichever site we decide upon in the wiki,
mailing list, irc, etc.

RE: Is there any plan of adding screen saver feature for moblin?

Tobin,

Sounds reasonable. What I want to get is event of no touch for a while

should be a system event. So I don't want to write my specific code to
deal with it.

you?

Thanks,

moblin-chat update

2007-10-11 Thread Zhu, Peter J
Add moko finger scroll feature to roster view.

Integrating empathy-0.14 feature is half way. It's big change and have
to do piece by piece and verify one by one. One big thing might be first
support of Voip support from empathy upstream. Voip integration is still
under way.

Hi Todd,

Yes. And I also want to get notification as entering in and out of idle

Hi Rusty,

Is there any dbus service for ppm under development or in plan so that I
can hook a signal to events of idle in/out?

Thanks,

Hi Peter, that's probably a ppm function since it depends on factors
such as remaining power and the current use case (for instance if you're
listening to music then the screen should be toggled off quickly, vs
watching video where it must remain on). PPM could then export these
settings to a control panel applet.

UI and Apps Status

2007-10-11 Thread Spencer, Bob
Another JIT status report

UI
Grid-layout / html Home Screen: Working now. Recognizes theme and
background change. Requires hildon-theme-mobile-basic for button button
background graphics. Still to be done:
- Set the default theme as this UI reads the theme from gconf and
currently UME default theme is the non-existent Human theme.
- show some small animated gif when application is launching
- listen for notification when application has completed launching
to turn off animation
- Request upload into gutsy
If you install the latest mobile-basic-flash package from moblin.org you
will get this UI by default.

Clutter Home Screen: Have got it working on my Q1 after getting the
hardware accel driver. Clutter 0.4+ libraries have been included in
gutsy
Current issues:
- Touch screen isn't sensitive enough to give me the light iPhone
touch feeling. I often have to use my fingernail to grab the objects
- UI is jerky. When you try to roll the objects left/right they
stall, then burst.
- actor objects often get misplaced and then bunched at the
beginning
- location highlight at the bottom of the screen is misplaced
- big animation look a little to Apple-MAC like. We'd like to get
it to look more like a rolling ring of icons
- the /etc/xdb/menus/*.menu file doesn't match well with our
applications. We need to add a MobileApp category to applications and
filter them for showing on the home screen
- when launching the applications the code to detect if it was
successfully launched is imperfect

Theme: Chatted with Ken about theme. He is highly frustrated with
our current status and apparent miscommunication. Need to resolve how
to get something in the short term and then fix the long term process
issues.

Bug with current flash UI: We found and fixed the performance but
with the flash UI.

Media Viewer: Have new graphics we are trying to put into
application/UI. Many new features working now including thumbnail view.

Other comments:
- I built LPIA build again this and still no Hildon Claws. We put a
couple of guys on this to try and get a last-minute upgrade of basic
features and it would be nice if we could see the Hildon version in our
images.

 From last week's To Do:
1) Get Grid-layout UI usable. Any day now. I assumed it would be
yesterday but ran into small bugs around changing the background
repeatedly. Should checkin today. (Done)
2) Make sure we resolve the performance bug. Hopefully this goes
away with the non-flash UI. We will still try to resolve, but it will
fall to a lesser priority. (Done)
3) Go through remaining UI elements and finish bug fixing for gutsy
launch. Mainly: marquee needs tweaking, theme needs to be completed.
(Still in progress)
4) Start work to get clutter UI to a usable state so people can
start commenting and we can discuss the exciting post-gutsy future of
the home screen! (Lots of work ahead)

Re: Ken: Theme conversation today

2007-10-11 Thread Kenneth Wimer
Hi,

At this point in time I guess we need to do whatever we can to get things
included. Sad that we spent more time discussing how to do this the right way
than actually doing it the right way but now is not the time to discuss that
I guess.

We can cut up the template that I have ready (although there are certainly a
few problems with it and the gtkrc is proabably nowhere near correct) and
then try to figure out which pieces are missing and get them done by hand.

My biggest problem at this point is: a week ago I installed and it did not
boot anymore, two days ago I installed and the xterm did not work and now I
try to make a new image with image-creator and it simply b0rks on me. Without
a running system to finish this stuff I see no way of moving forward. Can
anyone offer any help on this (ASAP)?

 Sorry, my hands hurt... anyway...
   Peter_u2 irc://irc.freenode.net/Peter_u2,isnick
 agoliveira, go on your thought.
   agoliveira, sorry to hear that
   agoliveira irc://irc.freenode.net/agoliveira,isnick
 1) We have the hildon-theme-tools that svn's a source package from
Maemo's repo so you can mess with it and create a theme package.
   2) What I did was to take a theme package from ken, polish it a
bit and call it base. The new tools do an apt-get source on this
package so you can tinker with it and upload it to be used with the same
name or other name, it does not matter.
   3) It took me more time than I expect to come up with this
 simple solution, sorry.
So now we are in this situation:
bspencer so there is a theme called ume-base in gutsy
 repo?

The new tools do an apt-get source on this package ??

   agoliveira irc://irc.freenode.net/agoliveira,isnick
 No, I 'm getting there
   Peter_u2 irc://irc.freenode.net/Peter_u2,isnick If you
can't make it, sending source by mail is ok.
   agoliveira irc://irc.freenode.net/agoliveira,isnick
The tools do an apt-get source but the package is not in the ubuntu repo
yet, I want to test it and check it with ken first so it's on my PPA.
   Peter_u2 irc://irc.freenode.net/Peter_u2,isnick So you
 might can use keyboard less.
bspencer agoliveira: before we uplaod it, can we put it
on LP for us to play with too?
   agoliveira irc://irc.freenode.net/agoliveira,isnick
So, let me explain in what point we are:
bspencer: I'll explain that too in a momjent

Based on what John said, I suggest you get moblin-image-creator from

Any other particular reason for not using

Which JDK I should use ? As I have very limited
Space for my Live CD .
What is diff between these packages
  1. free-java-jdk

This is a different sdk but is likely related to GCJ
(GNU's Compiler for Java), but has different
 maintainer.

  2. gcj
  3. java-gcj-compat and java-gcj-compat-dev

The GNU's Compiler for Java needs the above two
packages plus additional packages to run Java. (GCJ is
the Compiler for Java and GIJ is the interpreter for
 Java).

I would recommend, installing sun-java5-sdk (now that
it is Free Software (licensed under GPL2; you can
install the source, as well). Also, there's another
alternative, known as Blackdown Java. This was
created, when Sun's java was not under GPL.

If you have Adpet / Synaptic search for Blackdown
 Java.

Thanks .
Finally , I install free-java-jdk package .
Work for small HelloWorld java program .
Need to be tested for more advance stuff .

A small suggestion: Since this thread is related to
your Ubuntu for CS, I would request you to do the
 following.

Let the distro be as it is. Since, you plan to give
development tools to CS students, you could create and
Apt-ON CD for them, and distribute it with the sources
of those tools on that CD. Imagine, the advantages
 they get!

I can think of doing it this way. Considering, that
you have unlimited data transfers on your internet
connection, you could use apt-get to *download* (set
-d option) all the necessary packages.
You can then create a document on how to use the CD
for installing software and put it in the same CD.

Yes, this add on CD idea is next phase in our Project.
So package which are too big eg. Eclipse . will be on add on CD .
Also I expect students will use this Distro as Live CD for first few weeks .
Once they got enough confidence then they will install it .
In that case install+addon CD will give more advantage to students .

Could you suggest more packages/tools !!!

That CD will be like /sone pe suhaga/.

Ya , sure .

Right.

The list of packages that you include could be generic
or specific to the requirements of the course syllabus
of CS (say, for Mumbai and Pune University)

Compilers - GCC (C, C++, Java, Fotran, Ada)
Toolkits - GTK2+, Qt4
Additional- Clisp, a SVNclient, Python,
Graphic / Imaging tools - Krita, GIMP
Databases - PostgreSQL, MySQL
WebServer - Apache webserver, Tomcat, PHP
Editors - Kate, GNU Emacs, gEdit, gVim
Documentation - Free Books (GPLed), API docs
IDEs - Eclipse, Anjuta
Web Development tools - Quanta, Bluefish, NVU
Browsers - Firefox, Opera, Konqueror, Amaya (W3c's)

This list is not exhaustive. I think, the list just
makes up my assumptions of most liked. The first one
in each category is what I use.

Most likely, nobody is going to guarantee you unlimited
bandwidth. I would suggest first trying to get some
Canonical-sponsored hosting. If that does not work out,
you could consider http://code.indlinux.net which is
a NRCF-sponsored server for IndLinux development work.
The disk space, and shell access is not an issue, but
the bandwidth is. If you are really looking at multiple
GB/month, we probably cannot do this. You are welcome
to try it out for a while, if you wish to.

Most likely, yes. I will confer on this with Raj Mathur, who
manages the server in order to ensure that it does not overload

They are since patents on software is not valid in India. However

[ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu JeOS

2007-10-11 Thread Michael Holloway
Hi

jeOS looks really interesting, does anyone know when this is actually
going to be made available?

I am in the process of setting up new servers based on VMWareServer on
6.06.1, running 7.04 virtual machines.

Why the different versions:
Well the host machine is more difficult (and critical?) to update,
therefor 5 years LTS is very useful. As for the VMs, you can always
bring up a new VM with the latest Ubuntu, and migrate from one VM to
another seamlessly.

Does anyone have any comments on the above? Any bad-points to this idea?

Nope. It does all the funky rendering using it's own libraries. It
doesn't use beryl/compiz to do that.

Elisa isn't as feature-rich as mythbuntu (yet).

Have you looked at downloading themes for mythbuntu to pretty it up?

Nope, no problems. The nice way to do it is to issue the apt-get
clean command to clean out the cache. You can remove files manually,
and if you do, and ubuntu wants those files to resolve a dependency
issue it will just go and get them again when it needs them.

[ubuntu-uk] OT: Disc duplication - anyone know any places that can do it cheap?

2007-10-11 Thread Rob Beard
Hi folks,

Got a bit of an off topic question here. With Christmas coming up I was
was thinking of a way of spreading the word on FLOSS and also doing a
bit of promotion for a local media company I work for.

The idea I came up with (which I've mulled over before) is to distribute
copies of The Open Disc (www.theopendisc.com) around schools in the
area. I was thinking of The Open Disc because it's free to distribute
and because there are a whole load of Windows users out there who
probably don't know about Open Source software and their benefits, but
with The Open Disc they could learn about this and also try out the
great software on the disc (plus I see there are a few plugs about Linux
and Ubuntu/Kubuntu on the menu system too).

When I was looking into this before I figured it was rather expensive,
even when using cheap 9p CD-R discs (when factoring in duplication of
many thousands of discs, printing etc). I was wondering though if
anyone knew of a good duplication company who could take an ISO image,
make a glass master disc and then professionally press and print a whole
load of CDs (like what we get with the original Ubuntu discs).

I'm a bit clueless on where to start. I had a quick look at Google but
all I've found is CD-R duplication at about 66p per disc (I'd do it
cheaper myself!)

Anyone got any ideas?

Rob,

As it happens, I was with a disk publisher today sorting out a new
audiobook series I've done for them.

Sadly, they don't do duplication for other people, just their own stuff,
but given I was getting the factory tour I spent a bit of time in the
production room.

They have moved AWAY from the cheap disks, and moved onto the Sony ones...

... because in the last million they produced on Sony media, 6 failed !

The break-point in producing glass masters seems to be around the 500
disk mark - beneath that, big robotic duplication machines that are
basically a stack of DVD-R drivers, a printer, and a robot arm to move
disks between them (about 6 drives per printer seems to be the balance
for speed purposes) are the way they go.

The biggest cost they were facing was full-colour printing, which
actually cost MORE than the disks themselves. They've, again, moved to a
high-end system that literally has 7 ink wells connected to the beast
by tubes that they literally refill from bottles live.

Oh, and the fancy machines also connected to a 4 Tb over Gb ethernet, so
they could just pick any image, enter the number they wanted produced,
and click go.

I was, it must be admitted envious :-)

M.

We've found an emergency way to translate this string, for those
languages which have translations for that document from upstream but
not the Assistive Tools string, which is an Ubuntu customisation.

Is this maybe not extracted by xml2po? If so, filing a bug upstream
would help me look into it :)

I don't think there is a problem - it appears in the pot file
generated by the Ubuntu package. It's just a question of how to get it
translated.

Danilo - further to our previous discussion, and pending us finding a
better solution, please confirm that this one will work for Gutsy!

  1. Grab the Ubuntu-ised pot file from the rejected queue in Rosetta:
  http://launchpadlibrarian.net/9836563/gnome-access-guide.pot

(we might want to look into why was it rejected)

Yes, you can approve it if you like.

  2. Take the po file for your language from that repository at this
  address: http://tinyurl.com/2ycrh6.

  3. Use msgmerge on the po file like this (for example for Spanish):

   $ msgmerge es.po gnome-access-guide.pot  final.po

  4. Translate the Assistive Tools string in final.po into your language.

  5. Send me the completed po file by email and I will upload it to the
repository (as I understand it from discussions with Danilo, a diff
will not work and you need to send the whole po file).

This procedure should work. Also, diff _might_ work, but if it
doesn't, it will cause you a lot of problems trying to merge updates
by hand. That's why I suggest using complete PO files.

Good. Translators - please send me an merged and updated po file as
per my original email. So far I only have Spanish and Swedish.

For future releases, what we'll have to do (subject to any better
ideas) is to start from the upstream po file, import that into Rosetta
and replace these directly with the complete po files exported from
Rosetta. Any updates to the upstream translations that happen during
the process should be manually uploaded into Rosetta, which will merge
the relevant strings (I hope).

[Ubuntu-BR] Gusty: aptitude safe-upgrade e full-upgrade

Sugerem utilizar, respectivamente, aptitude safe-upgrade e aptitude
full-upgrade.

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Alterar rótulo do Pendrive.

2007-10-11 Thread Kemel Zaidan

2007-10-11 Thread Thiago Tabosa
computador dele . Vi no man do apt-get que para somente baixar um pacote
pode-se usar a opção -d . Ficando algo do tipo :
apt-get install -d nomedopacote

as dependências do pacote e colocar tudo junto ?

pacotes baixados e instalados por apt-get.

Segue a minha contribuição.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto, conforme a
indicação do Artur no correio abaixo.
/proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
- No arquivo de documentação em
/alsa-kernel/Documentation/alsa-driver-1.x.x/ALSA-Configuration.txt,
localizei o modelo que deveria setar no arquivo: alsa-base (sudo gedit
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base)
- No meu caso, incluí as linhas no final do arquivo:
options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba
options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1

- Reiniciei a máquina e o som ficou bala...

Espero ter ajudado outros usuários.

Abraços.
Marcus Grimaldi

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Fazendo download de pacotes pelo apt-get

2007-10-11 Thread :: Dirceu ::

 sudo apt-get --purge remove beryl
 sudo apt-get --purge autoremove

 Atualize o sistema

 sudo apt-get update
 sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

 Instale o compiz-fusion

 sudo apt-get install desktop-effects

 e habilite ele em

An announcement was indeed posted to the fridge during August, but I

Ah, ok. What about creating a story once per week, showcasing all the

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Ubuntu Screencasts

2007-10-11 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan
I just like to exclaim how useful the screencasts from the Screencasts Team
have been.

At Software Freedom Day, we (the Sydney, Australia team) had screencasts
running all day in a continuous loop. The high quality of the video meant
that we could use a reasonably large display, and the subtitles meant that
visitors could follow the action despite the noisy computer fair that we were
in. Being able to actually show people how tasks are performed saved us a lot
of repetitive explaining and made the message resonate so much better.

Hats off to the Screencasts Team!

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Ubuntu Screencasts

2007-10-11 Thread Alan Pope
Hi Matt,

Thanks for the comprehensive run down.

On Wed, 2007-10-10 at 11:07 +0100, Matthew East wrote:
Just one further clarification: the screencasts are not designed as
marketing videos, but are rather explanations about how to do a
 particular task on Ubuntu.

Agreed. The existing batch are predominantly aimed at new users as a
show-and-tell experience. I figure a large number of people are put off
by reams of text documentation, or just flat out won't read it. Then
there are those who actually prefer to be shown something rather than
teach themselves. I am pretty sure that there are plenty of people out
there who benefit from being shown how to do something.

There is of course also the marketing side. Showing that we can do
something that other platforms can't, showing that we have the latest
crack that other distros don't, showing that we have a great community
and so on. All these aren't technically show-and-tell, but more
marketing disguised as such.

 As I understand it, the
screencasts project doesn't current have that aim, although perhaps it
 could be extended.

Indeed. We just figured it would be cool to have some videos showing how
to do stuff. If other people can see other aims or goals that we perhaps
should strive for then please speak up.

I spoke to Kat and Matt earlier on today and explained some of the
history of the screencast team. We have issues in that there's not a
huge number of people contributing screencasts themselves, but we have
plenty of people offering to spec up, script and help prep screencasts.
Then in post-production we have people willing to subtitle and translate
them into other languages.

We're also somewhat lacking direction. I'd appreciate any and all help
in this regard. Whether that means being directed by the docteam as to
which screencasts fit best with the existing documentation, or what, I
don't know, but I'm happy to talk about any/all alternatives.

However, in relation to screencasts which are pure instructions on how
to accomplish a particular task, I think it's important to recognise
that screencasts are essential one aspect of documentation: text and
video in the context of *instructions* are essentially two sides of
the same concept. Video is cool and flashy, but text has its uses as
 well.

I completely agree. It's really my fault that we moved away from the
docteam, and I'm sorry if that's what's caused us to have less
direction. If there are people either within Canonical or in the docteam
who can lend us a hand with that, I'd love to hear it.

I think we should try and promote the two together, in the sense that
users who we are showing instructions to should be presented with
either an option of whether to follow text instructions, or video
 instructions.

I agree. At the moment we have a small number of fairly lengthy
screencasts. I'd much rather we had a larger number of shorter ones,
that are punchy and atomic, but in sequence can build into a larger
tutorial.

Ideally, they'd get both at the same time, integrated.
I'd like to work with Alan if possible to develop ways to integrate
screencasts into the online and system documentation.

Cool. I am happy with that.

Many thanks for all the help and support guys gals.

Cheers,
Al.

Everybody has somewhere something useless for him.

Either you can give it to freecycle.org, either you can sell it on
eBay for Ubuntu-be.org financing...

So we can maybe arrive in a situation like :

I don't have money to give to Ubuntu-be.org, but I have a old stock of
. (fill with what you want) that could be sold on ebay to
sponsorise Ubuntu-be.org ...

Good Idea ? Wrong Idea ?
