Re: [ubuntu-art] gallery aka art.ubuntu.com
On Thursday 11 October 2007 00:05:01 Nick Bauermeister wrote: Hi, sorry for the dumb question first but why exactly has art.ubuntu.com taken down in the first place? We still have an own thread in the german Ubuntu community for it and many people keep asking when it's coming back. It was taken down because it was hosted externally and was one of the sites which were recently hacked. I think using art.ubuntu for proposals would be a great thing, because this way we will get back an Ubuntu related artwork community but make sure it will be high quality artwork, since it should be designed to get into Ubuntu only. If you look for 'Ubuntu' on sites like gnome-look, most entries are ripoffs with a Ubuntu logo pasted on a picture or something like this. So it would be nice to have a place for creative people that are aiming to get their stuff into Ubuntu but their work won't be lost, if it doesn't make it. Right, but is the artwork any better on ubuntu-art.org? It is the same code as gnome-look.org but was made just for ubuntu...not sure that having yet another site would increase the quality of the artwork. What would probably help things would be point to whichever site we decide upon in the wiki, mailing list, irc, etc. -- Ken -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

Tobin, Sounds reasonable. What I want to get is event of no touch for a while from user and touch after a while, like screen saver. I believe it should be a system event. Hi Peter, that's probably a ppm function since it depends on factors such as remaining power and the current use case (for instance if you're listening to music then the screen should be toggled off quickly, vs watching video where it must remain on). PPM could then export these settings to a control panel applet. UI and Apps Status
Another JIT status report UI Grid-layout / html Home Screen: Working now. Recognizes theme and background change. Requires hildon-theme-mobile-basic for button button background graphics. Still to be done: - Set the default theme as this UI reads the theme from gconf and currently UME default theme is the non-existent Human theme. - show some small animated gif when application is launching - listen for notification when application has completed launching to turn off animation - Request upload into gutsy If you install the latest mobile-basic-flash package from moblin.org you will get this UI by default. Clutter Home Screen: Have got it working on my Q1 after getting the hardware accel driver. Clutter 0.4+ libraries have been included in gutsy Current issues: - Touch screen isn't sensitive enough to give me the light iPhone touch feeling. I often have to use my fingernail to grab the objects - UI is jerky. When you try to roll the objects left/right they stall, then burst. - actor objects often get misplaced and then bunched at the beginning - location highlight at the bottom of the screen is misplaced - big animation look a little to Apple-MAC like. We'd like to get it to look more like a rolling ring of icons - the /etc/xdb/menus/*.menu file doesn't match well with our applications. We need to add a MobileApp category to applications and filter them for showing on the home screen - when launching the applications the code to detect if it was successfully launched is imperfect Theme: Chatted with Ken about theme. He is highly frustrated with our current status and apparent miscommunication. Need to resolve how to get something in the short term and then fix the long term process issues. Bug with current flash UI: We found and fixed the performance but with the flash UI. Media Viewer: Have new graphics we are trying to put into application/UI. Many new features working now including thumbnail view. Other comments: - I built LPIA build again this and still no Hildon Claws. We put a couple of guys on this to try and get a last-minute upgrade of basic features and it would be nice if we could see the Hildon version in our images. From last week's To Do: 1) Get Grid-layout UI usable. Any day now. I assumed it would be yesterday but ran into small bugs around changing the background repeatedly. Should checkin today. (Done) 2) Make sure we resolve the performance bug. Hopefully this goes away with the non-flash UI. We will still try to resolve, but it will fall to a lesser priority. (Done) 3) Go through remaining UI elements and finish bug fixing for gutsy launch. Mainly: marquee needs tweaking, theme needs to be completed. (Still in progress) 4) Start work to get clutter UI to a usable state so people can start commenting and we can discuss the exciting post-gutsy future of the home screen! Re: Ken: Theme conversation today
Hi, At this point in time I guess we need to do whatever we can to get things included. Sad that we spent more time discussing how to do this the right way than actually doing it the right way but now is not the time to discuss that I guess. We can cut up the template that I have ready (although there are certainly a few problems with it and the gtkrc is proabably nowhere near correct) and then try to figure out which pieces are missing and get them done by hand. My biggest problem at this point is: a week ago I installed and it did not boot anymore, two days ago I installed and the xterm did not work and now I try to make a new image with image-creator and it simply b0rks on me. Hi folks, Got a bit of an off topic question here. With Christmas coming up I was was thinking of a way of spreading the word on FLOSS and also doing a bit of promotion for a local media company I work for. The idea I came up with (which I've mulled over before) is to distribute copies of The Open Disc (www.theopendisc.com) around schools in the area. I was thinking of The Open Disc because it's free to distribute and because there are a whole load of Windows users out there who probably don't know about Open Source software and their benefits, but with The Open Disc they could learn about this and also try out the great software on the disc (plus I see there are a few plugs about Linux and Ubuntu/Kubuntu on the menu system too). When I was looking into this before I figured it was rather expensive, even when using cheap 9p CD-R discs (when factoring in duplication of many thousands of discs, printing etc). I was wondering though if anyone knew of a good duplication company who could take an ISO image, make a glass master disc and then professionally press and print a whole load of CDs (like what we get with the original Ubuntu discs). I'm a bit clueless on where to start. I had a quick look at Google but all I've found is CD-R duplication at about 66p per disc (I'd do it cheaper myself!) Anyone got any ideas? There is a company in Manchester that I used a couple of years ago. They were very good. Their WEB site is www.kingsdirect.co.uk. Back in 2005, it cost me 97p per CD for 200 off, which may be a little expensive. Not sure about their prices today. That included printing on the CD as well. I provided a zip file of the CD contents and a PDF with the art work. Regards, Tony. Thanks Tony, gives me something to go on. Looks like it'll be about £2000 + VAT for 10,000 CDs. Rob, As it happens, I was with a disk publisher today sorting out a new audiobook series I've done for them. Sadly, they don't do duplication for other people, just their own stuff, but given I was getting the factory tour I spent a bit of time in the production room. They have moved AWAY from the cheap disks, and moved onto the Sony ones... ... because in the last million they produced on Sony media, 6 failed ! The break-point in producing glass masters seems to be around the 500 disk mark - beneath that, big robotic duplication machines that are basically a stack of DVD-R drivers, a printer, and a robot arm to move disks between them (about 6 drives per printer seems to be the balance for speed purposes) are the way they go. The biggest cost they were facing was full-colour printing, which actually cost MORE than the disks themselves. They've, again, moved to a high-end system that literally has 7 ink wells connected to the beast by tubes that they literally refill from bottles live. Oh, and the fancy machines also connected to a 4 Tb over Gb ethernet, so they could just pick any image, enter the number they wanted produced, and click go. I was, it must be admitted envious :-) M. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/

Hi, On 11/10/2007, Danilo Šegan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Sorry for the late response, I've got quite some pending email waiting for some attention. I can imagine, thanks for fast-tracking this one! On Monday at 22:16, Matthew East wrote: Ricardo pointed out to me this evening that the string Assistive Tools from the gnome-access-guide document is untranslated and appears on the Yelp front page. We've found an emergency way to translate this string, for those languages which have translations for that document from upstream but not the Assistive Tools string, which is an Ubuntu customisation. Is this maybe not extracted by xml2po? If so, filing a bug upstream would help me look into it :) I don't think there is a problem - it appears in the pot file generated by the Ubuntu package. It's just a question of how to get it translated. Danilo - further to our previous discussion, and pending us finding a better solution, please confirm that this one will work for Gutsy! 1. Grab the Ubuntu-ised pot file from the rejected queue in Rosetta: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/9836563/gnome-access-guide.pot (we might want to look into why was it rejected) Yes, you can approve it if you like. 2. Take the po file for your language from that repository at this address: http://tinyurl.com/2ycrh6. 3. Use msgmerge on the po file like this (for example for Spanish): $ msgmerge es.po gnome-access-guide.pot final.po 4. Translate the Assistive Tools string in final.po into your language. 5. Send me the completed po file by email and I will upload it to the repository (as I understand it from discussions with Danilo, a diff will not work and you need to send the whole po file). This procedure should work. Also, diff _might_ work, but if it doesn't, it will cause you a lot of problems trying to merge updates by hand. That's why I suggest using complete PO files. Good. Translators - please send me an merged and updated po file as per my original email. So far I only have Spanish and Swedish. For future releases, what we'll have to do (subject to any better ideas) is to start from the upstream po file, import that into Rosetta and replace these directly with the complete po files exported from Rosetta. Any updates to the upstream translations that happen during the process should be manually uploaded into Rosetta, which will merge the relevant strings (I hope). -- Matthew East http://www.mdke.org gnupg pub 1024D/0E6B06FF -- ubuntu-translators mailing list ubuntu-translators@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-translators

[Ubuntu-BR] criar repositório
Amigos.
Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Alterar rótulo do Pendrive.
Segue a minha contribuição. -- ___ Dirceu Luís Follmann MSN: dlfollmann [at] gmail . com http://daquidafronteira.wordpress.com http://juristantum.wordpress.com [...] Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Ubuntu Screencasts
I just like to exclaim how useful the screencasts from the Screencasts Team have been. At Software Freedom Day, we (the Sydney, Australia team) had screencasts running all day in a continuous loop. The high quality of the video meant that we could use a reasonably large display, and the subtitles meant that visitors could follow the action despite the noisy computer fair that we were in. Being able to actually show people how tasks are performed saved us a lot of repetitive explaining and made the message resonate so much better. Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Ubuntu Screencasts
Hi Matt, Thanks for the comprehensive run down. On Wed, 2007-10-10 at 11:07 +0100, Matthew East wrote: Just one further clarification: the screencasts are not designed as marketing videos, but are rather explanations about how to do a particular task on Ubuntu. Agreed. The existing batch are predominantly aimed at new users as a show-and-tell experience. I figure a large number of people are put off by reams of text documentation, or just flat out won't read it. Then there are those who actually prefer to be shown something rather than teach themselves. I am pretty sure that there are plenty of people out there who benefit from being shown how to do something. There is of course also the marketing side. Showing that we can do something that other platforms can't, showing that we have the latest crack that other distros don't, showing that we have a great community and so on. All these aren't technically show-and-tell, but more marketing disguised as such. As I understand it, the screencasts project doesn't current have that aim, although perhaps it could be extended. Indeed. We just figured it would be cool to have some videos showing how to do stuff. If other people can see other aims or goals that we perhaps should strive for then please speak up. I spoke to Kat and Matt earlier on today and explained some of the history of the screencast team. We have issues in that there's not a huge number of people contributing screencasts themselves, but we have plenty of people offering to spec up, script and help prep screencasts. Then in post-production we have people willing to subtitle and translate them into other languages. We're also somewhat lacking direction. I'd appreciate any and all help in this regard. Whether that means being directed by the docteam as to which screencasts fit best with the existing documentation, or what, I don't know, but I'm happy to talk about any/all alternatives. However, in relation to screencasts which are pure instructions on how to accomplish a particular task, I think it's important to recognise that screencasts are essential one aspect of documentation: text and video in the context of *instructions* are essentially two sides of the same concept. Video is cool and flashy, but text has its uses as well. I completely agree. It's really my fault that we moved away from the docteam, and I'm sorry if that's what's caused us to have less direction. If there are people either within Canonical or in the docteam who can lend us a hand with that, I'd love to hear it. I think we should try and promote the two together, in the sense that users who we are showing instructions to should be presented with either an option of whether to follow text instructions, or video instructions. I agree. At the moment we have a small number of fairly lengthy screencasts. I'd much rather we had a larger number of shorter ones, that are punchy and atomic, but in sequence can build into a larger tutorial. Ideally, they'd get both at the same time, integrated. I'd like to work with Alan if possible to develop ways to integrate screencasts into the online and system documentation. Cool. I am happy with that. Many thanks for all the help and support guys gals.
