Also, many of you know, I am not a graphic designer. I would love some help on the Ubuntu.com and related sites from graphic designers (and other people who do web stuff) who wanted to help. Right now, the art-work I create gets the job done but lacks the polish and subtle character of a true artist. Help could come in the form of screenshots and icons, but also it'd be nice to have more dynamic content. For example, a while back, Ken and I worked on a visual tour similar to http://demos.mootools.net/Fx.Scroll that served to highlight new features on the Ubuntu desktop (it didn't pan out (pun intended :-]) though because of time constraints). And I love this effect as an idea for the screenshot gallery: http://digitarald.de/playground/remooz.html Help is also needed to optimize and resize graphics. Balancing the right compression levels, choosing png or jpg and resizing are all tasks that benefit from a human eye. Finally, doing layouts in html takes more skill and time than most of the website editors posses. Some of you may know that working within the constraints of a webpage, especially a CMS, can be very challenging. Therefore the pages on the ubuntu.com website tend to look very bland. I downloaded and installed gutsy i386 image. I have an HP tx1000 tablet which has AMD turion x2. This particular laptop is known to be difficult to configure and there is a huge thread dedicated to it on Ubuntu forums http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=442483 I had to do a lot of tweaks just to get the live cd to boot - a handful of kernel parameters but this was the case with feisty as well so I was aware of what to do. Still I would have expected some of the issues to be resolved in gutsy. My first impression has been not so good. I am unable to shutdown the system cleanly, the system seems pretty slow and non reactive to inputs, the touchscreen doesnt work (it was recognized by default in feisty but was unusable as it was impossible to calibrate) But I have been able to get the wireless working with ndiswrapper. So at least one thing works as expected. Also I get write access to my ntfs windows partitions out of the box which is cool. A lot of these issues might get solved as I fine tune my system install nvidia drivers and configure x, get the right balance of kernel parameters etc. So I am still hopeful. Seems like its going to be a fun weekend ;) I will post of my results and steps as I get more things working. A full review on my blog ASP, but let me say i was dissapointed with CompizFusion, it gave better effects on Fiesty, they seem to have removed 70% eye candy with the final version!! eg: no dekstop cube effect, no rain effect. [ubuntu-uk] Wifi PCMCIA card - suggestions, please.
I want to install Gutsy on an old Dell Inspiron. I'd be very glad of suggestions for an 802.11g PCMCIA card that # can do WPA encryption # you actually have seen working out of the box with Gutsy (!) # I can buy currently from a UK vendor. Please forgive the paranoia, but I have awful memories of the last time I set up a similar Dell Inspiron using a Linksys (Broadcom) card with Dapper. It was literally a fortnight of exasperation, and I don't have the emotionally energy to go through that again! So, names and model numbers of cards that are in the shops and actually do work would be very welcome :-) TIA Mac -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/

But I am very impressed so far :) Upgrade went smoothly but somewhat slowly. I suppose lots of people after the same files as me. Very pleased so far and, to my delight, my scanner now works. Al Thanks for the quick reply. The reason I asked for the name and model of a card someone has seen working out of the box with WPA and available in a shop now is that the information in all the 'good places to look' is often wildly out of date, wrong, or very confusing. For example, linuxemporium recommends Edimax. I bought one some time ago, but it didn't work 'out of the box' with Feisty. It doesn't work 'out of the box' with Gutsy live CD. [ubuntu-uk] Any recommendations for graphics cards?
Hi all, I'm sorry, I don't generally like to ask for hardware recommendation on these lists, but I'm a little confused about the compatibility and software options of the current lot of graphics cards, and figured that you guys might have some more up-to-date knowledge of this than me. I currently have an ATI Radeon X700 on my desktop PC, and whilst this is generally fine for pretty much everything I need, I've started to get really frustrated with it, due to: 1. the lack of a good free driver, and 2. the lack of ability of the proprietary driver, especially with 3d-desktop stuff and the like. I've heard that the proprietary drivers will soon have better support for things such as AIGLX, and the free driver people also claim to be making progress, but I've had little success with either driver at getting what I want - a fast 3d desktop, but also the ability to run fast 3d apps on top of it. I guess I have three options: 1. Wait for the proprietary driver to improve 2. Wait for the free driver to improve 3. Get a new (better supported) card I'm starting to think that by the time either option 1 or 2 happens, the card will be too old to run a lot of new stuff anyway and I'll probably be upgrading. So, if I were to get a new card, what should it be? I'd like to be able to run free drivers, and achieve the aforementioned fast 3d desktop and 3d apps and games. (I like EVE Online, Half-life 2 etc, though I'm not the kind to spend a fortune just to get a few extra FPS out of this year's title). I'm not that up on the current state of drivers for other makes of card, but I do know that I have a lovely intel graphics chipset in my laptop, which works really well and with a bit more RAM on a dedicated card would probably be great. However, how do these compare with the ATI / nvidia offerings? Is there another I should choose? How open are the different cards / drivers? I know that neither ATI or nvidia are great when it comes to openness, but I do recall there being an announcement from ATI/AMD recently about opening up their drivers to some extent. I've never had an nvidia card - are they generally better supported than ATI ones (I've anecdotally read that they are). Anyway, so any advice on where to go from here would be very much appreciated! Cheers, Pete.

Selecionei modo gráfico seguro, apertei F6, e escrevi o seguinte: noapic nolapic nosmp pnpbios=off Dei um enter e esperei a carga do CD. -- ___ Dirceu Luís Follmann MSN: dlfollmann [at] gmail . com http://daquidafronteira.wordpress.com http://juristantum.wordpress.com [...]
