Hi, I've added a new feature to the website for this release, a
screenshot gallery:
http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/screenshots-710

I was wondering if we could make it a goal for the next release to
finish the artwork stuff sooner so that it will be easier to create
screenshots and advertisements that include the final pieces.

Also, many of you know, I am not a graphic designer. I would love some
help on the Ubuntu.com and related sites from graphic designers (and
other people who do web stuff) who wanted to help. Right now, the
art-work I create gets the job done but lacks the polish and subtle
character of a true artist.

Help could come in the form of screenshots and icons, but also it'd be
nice to have more dynamic content. For example, a while back, Ken and
I worked on a visual tour similar to
http://demos.mootools.net/Fx.Scroll that served to highlight new
features on the Ubuntu desktop (it didn't pan out (pun intended :-])
though because of time constraints). And I love this effect as an idea
for the screenshot gallery:
http://digitarald.de/playground/remooz.html

Help is also needed to optimize and resize graphics. Balancing the
right compression levels, choosing png or jpg and resizing are all
tasks that benefit from a human eye.

Finally, doing layouts in html takes more skill and time than most of
the website editors posses. Some of you may know that working within
the constraints of a webpage, especially a CMS, can be very
challenging. Therefore the pages on the ubuntu.com website tend to
look very bland.

What ever your area of interest, Ubuntu would benefit from your help.

Re: [ubuntu-in] Has anyone reviewed Gusty

2007-10-20 Thread Manu Mahajan
I downloaded and installed gutsy i386 image. I have an HP tx1000 tablet
which has AMD turion x2. This particular laptop is known to be difficult to
configure and there is a huge thread dedicated to it on Ubuntu forums
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=442483

I had to do a lot of tweaks just to get the live cd to boot - a handful of
kernel parameters but this was the case with feisty as well so I was aware
of what to do. Still I would have expected some of the issues to be resolved
in gutsy.

My first impression has been not so good. I am unable to shutdown the system
cleanly, the system seems pretty slow and non reactive to inputs, the
touchscreen doesn’t work (it was recognized by default in feisty but was
unusable as it was impossible to calibrate)

But I have been able to get the wireless working with ndiswrapper. So at
least one thing works as expected. Also I get write access to my ntfs
windows partitions out of the box which is cool.

A lot of these issues might get solved as I fine tune my system – install
nvidia drivers and configure x, get the right balance of kernel parameters
etc. So I am still hopeful. Seems like it’s going to be a fun weekend ;)

I will post of my results and steps as I get more things working.

Manu

Yeah, i have already downloaded and am seeding the
ubuntu-alternate-cd-iso, ubuntu-live-cd-iso and xubuntu-live-cd-iso...
I upgraded my box from Fiesty, so was a breeze :)
In all, ive been just poking around... A full review on my blog ASP,
but let me say i was dissapointed with CompizFusion, it gave better
effects on Fiesty, they seem to have removed 70% eye candy with the
final version!! eg: no dekstop cube effect, no rain effect.

Let see what happens over the weekend, fun!

Install compizconfig-settings-manager. This will enable custom
configuration for compiz-fusion. There you can enable desktop cube and
other plugins.

Faced a couple of problems. Took a couple of hours to fix it all. Everything is

A more detailed post on my blog.

IMHO not as smooth as Fiesty.

[ubuntu-uk] Wifi PCMCIA card - suggestions, please.

2007-10-20 Thread Mac
I want to install Gutsy on an old Dell Inspiron. I'd be very glad of
suggestions for an 802.11g PCMCIA card that

# can do WPA encryption

# you actually have seen working out of the box with Gutsy (!)

# I can buy currently from a UK vendor.

Please forgive the paranoia, but I have awful memories of the last time
I set up a similar Dell Inspiron using a Linksys (Broadcom) card with
Dapper. It was literally a fortnight of exasperation, and I don't have
the emotionally energy to go through that again!

So, names and model numbers of cards that are in the shops and actually
do work would be very welcome :-)

TIA

scanner now works. Must check my camera.

http://linuxemporium.co.uk/products/wireless/ is probably a good place
 to start.

Al Thanks for the quick reply. The reason I asked for the name and
model of a card someone has seen working out of the box with WPA and
available in a shop now is that the information in all the 'good places
to look' is often wildly out of date, wrong, or very confusing.

For example, linuxemporium recommends Edimax. I bought one some time
ago, but it didn't work 'out of the box' with Feisty. It doesn't work
'out of the box' with Gutsy live CD. So I'm sceptical of anything that
doesn't come with an 'I've actually seen this working' recommendation.

Sorry to seem so fussy, but - like many here, I guess - I've spent hours
- no, days - researching wifi kit with much frustration. :-(

The easiest way to get your wireless working if you have rt2500-based
wireless is to upgrade to Ubuntu 7.10. Everything works out of the box,
including WPA.

As previously suggested, raise a Answer[0] or Bug report[1] on
Launchpad - providing as much detail as possible, including Make/Model.
If usb attached, the output of lsusb -vvv and dmesg (from the

You can save the output easier if you:

$ dmesg  dmesg_output.txt

[ubuntu-uk] Any recommendations for graphics cards?

2007-10-20 Thread Peter Lewis
Hi all,

I'm sorry, I don't generally like to ask for hardware recommendation on these
lists, but I'm a little confused about the compatibility and software options
of the current lot of graphics cards, and figured that you guys might have
some more up-to-date knowledge of this than me.

I currently have an ATI Radeon X700 on my desktop PC, and whilst this is
generally fine for pretty much everything I need, I've started to get really
frustrated with it, due to:

1. the lack of a good free driver, and
2. the lack of ability of the proprietary driver, especially with 3d-desktop
stuff and the like.

I've heard that the proprietary drivers will soon have better support for
things such as AIGLX, and the free driver people also claim to be making
progress, but I've had little success with either driver at getting what I
want - a fast 3d desktop, but also the ability to run fast 3d apps on top of
it.

I guess I have three options:

1. Wait for the proprietary driver to improve
2. Wait for the free driver to improve
3. Get a new (better supported) card

I'm starting to think that by the time either option 1 or 2 happens, the card
will be too old to run a lot of new stuff anyway and I'll probably be
upgrading.

So, if I were to get a new card, what should it be? I'd like to be able to run
free drivers, and achieve the aforementioned fast 3d desktop and 3d apps and
games. (I like EVE Online, Half-life 2 etc, though I'm not the kind to spend
a fortune just to get a few extra FPS out of this year's title).

I'm not that up on the current state of drivers for other makes of card, but I
do know that I have a lovely intel graphics chipset in my laptop, which works
really well and with a bit more RAM on a dedicated card would probably be
great. However, how do these compare with the ATI / nvidia offerings? Is
there another I should choose? How open are the different cards / drivers? I
know that neither ATI or nvidia are great when it comes to openness, but I do
recall there being an announcement from ATI/AMD recently about opening up
their drivers to some extent. I've never had an nvidia card - are they
generally better supported than ATI ones (I've anecdotally read that they
are).

Anyway, so any advice on where to go from here would be very much appreciated!

Cheers,

Pete.

Now, I don't mind shelling out a bit over the odds for a set that works,

You'd be surprised. At them prices I guess they will be picked up by
folks who want a cheapo PC for the kids room (maybe to replace an older
PC). Not sure how much Tescos charge for a monitor, but I'd say for no
more than about £250 they could get a working system.

 2) Won't the Linux branding scare off a few people, especially if it's

Might scare off some, others will no doubt try and get a 'computer

though would just see it as a cheap computer.

Hi Ian,

Plantronics are considered by many to be _the_ industry standard for
headsets.

I have four Plantronics headsets and I would have to agree. They are
also all recognised in Ubuntu 'out-of-the-box'.

Hope this helps.

When I last used it, I selected it by mistake. It's on the boot menu that
comes up when you boot from the CD. It used to be only on the alternate CD,
but it seems Gutsy has a graphical version now, so perhaps it is on the
desktop CD. Not sure.

When I used it (in Dapper) it was basically a normal installation, you set
up the PC, up to the point of entering a username and password. This is
prompted for on the next boot (ie. when the user switches it on for the
first time).

My Thinkpad R50 has both wireless and bluetooth and the Fn+F5 key is
supposed to cycle though all the on/off possibilities for both, but with
Ubuntu it only seems to turn the bluetooth on and off not the wireless
(though I haven't tested this in Gutsy yet.)

[ubuntu-uk] Gutsy,evolution problems

2007-10-20 Thread Daniel Lamb
Hi,

Is anyone else having problems with the speed of evolution on Gutsy?

I have checked, it is not the most up to date version,

I have just managed to get my parents converted to ubuntu and would love
this to work.

Daniel

[ubuntu-uk] Upgrading?

2007-10-20 Thread Freddie Ruddick
Hiya,

I've been using 7.10 since the beta, and have obviously installed every
update that it offered. At the moment, Update checker reports no
updates. Just to check, I won't gain anything if I reinstall from the
final CD, will I?

Last time I rebooted (which was before the final release) a GRUB menu
came up offering me a choice of several gutsy gibbon development
edition kernels, instead of the usual press esc for menu, will this
now have changed?

Ta,

Freddie
:)

One nice feature of the live CD is that we provide a link to the translated

translated release notes available, which is where you fine folks come in.

That didn't work very well, did it?
I booted the Gutsy Desktop CD in English, choose Swedish in Ubiquity,
and clicked on the Kommentarer till utgåva (Release Notes).. and the
English Release Notes was shown. Bug or feature?

Hello,

When trying to install UbuntuStudio from DVD I get to the point where

installable cd-rom was found... . I have an Asus motherboard with the

2007-10-20 Thread Khristian
Já tava falando do Gutsy oficial. Mesmo assim, a resolução do problema
é simples:
1- instalar os pacotes do compiz, compizconfig e xserver-xgl
2- reiniciar o X
3- compiz --replace
4- pronto.

1- sudo apt-get install compiz compizconfig-settings-manager xserver-xgl
2- fazer o log off, ou ctrl+alt+backspace
3- Alt+F2 e executar aquilo
4- Abrir uma cerveja e comemorar.

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] 32 ou 64?

2007-10-20 Thread Saul Lima

No meu

Obrigado pelas dicas,
Maurício

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Erro ao tentar instalar 7.10 no notbook

2007-10-20 Thread :: Dirceu ::

Selecionei modo gráfico seguro, apertei F6, e escrevi o seguinte: noapic
nolapic nosmp pnpbios=off

[Ubuntu-BR] NVIDIA Geforce 7300 LE no Gutsy (desktop effects)

corretamente, inclusive estou conseguino usar a resolução ideal pro meu
monitor (1440x900 @75).
aceleração 3D, recebo a mesagem The software source for the package
nvidia-glx-new is not enabled.

I tried the link but it goes to the main site
http://www.surveymonkey.com/ not the survey. If you can also send the
question through email.

1 How long did it take you take to fill-up the questionnaire? (Tick one)
5-10 minuets

2 Is the instruction clear? (Tick one)
clear

3 Do you find any difficulty in answering the questions? Why?
4 Do you find any ambiguity during answering the questionnaire? Why?
No they were basic questions, however they are answered from my point of
view.

5 How do you find the presentation of the questionnaire? (Tick one)
They could be better formatted, but no point of hassling about it.

Now, my research had done data collection. Collected 1022 responses from
Generation Y in Malaysia. Most probably the analysis and findings will
be released on early November. At that time, i will email the findings
and recommendation branding strategy to you and the Ubuntu Linux
marketing team. At last step, i need your comment again about the
recommended branding strategy - to make decision which branding strategy
 is appropriate.

It depends on your goal and your public. You cant do everything in one
time. First you getter a list of resources you have, like time,
material, people.

For example when your approach a technical university, you take a
different strategy when organise a meeting in your local living place.

The best way is to get people using Ubuntu, and help them to keep using
it and tell them step by step about the philosophy.

Nice to meet you. It is glad to meet a young entrepreneur from
Netherlands! After I have read your email, I have the following
 questions:

  1. What type of marketing or branding strategy that you have made to
improve awareness of Ubuntu Linux in Netherlands?

This is a far to wide question to answer completely. But to summary, we
make magazines, we give meetings, we provide irq support, and try to get
as much media attention as possible. We also give advice to company's
and the government about Floss and Ubuntu.

  2. Why you select the ¡°Moderately Interest¡± option for answer 4
 and 5
of the question 5 in the questionnaire while other factors as ¡°High
Interest¡±? Do you think the OS that can help consumer to achieve
 their
personal needs and the emotional benefit (Youth Generation OS, Dancing
with Computer: Use It, Love It, Pass It On) have no impact on the
  motivation?

I filled in he questionnaire form my point fo view, My point is not the
same as the average user. I use Linux because I believe in its
philosophy, the fact fact that you can download it at no cost is not
relevant for me personally. From the marketing perspective I look at the
average user and make a switch in the way the user is motivated to use
Linux. Things like money, multimedia, interests, emotional satisfaction,
 easy use etcetera become important.

  3. Similar to question above, why you select the ¡°Moderately
Important¡± option for answer 4 and 5 of the question 6 in the
questionnaire while other factors as ¡°High Interest¡±? Do you
 think the
OS that can help consumer to achieve their personal needs and the
satisfaction cannot make the consumer to stay with the same brand?

 See previous point.

  4. What is your company name and your position in that company?
 What is
  your company website?

We got a starting company, that is specialised in the research and
development, together with training in the development of embedded hard-
and software that is development with only Floss development tools. We
are trying to create a new type of base platform for the development
with Floss development tools. Starting with ARM micro controllers
 together with Embedded Linux (ARM-Linux)

I got a positive reply from Bawet coordinator.
A room with beamer near the Install Party will be available for a
Gutsy demo : volunteer welcome (otherwise I will have to do the demo,
which is maybe not the best idea (see my nickname))

If I get this by mid-afternoon, I will go to print it.

No reply. OK, I'll be tomorrow 17.00 at Liege station entrance. If
someone comes with flyers to distribute before 17.45, great.
Otherwise I'll have a drink and get back home.

I'm interested to buy about 100.

What about grouping an order ?
