[ubuntu-art] Hardy's GDM
I'd like to point out, that the glow on the Ubuntu logo is far too aggressive. It shouldn't be white but bright brown or yellowish (the glow on the lower bar looks good). I also found a bug, that when you type an incorrect password, the red warning text is behind the input field. -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art
Re: [ubuntu-art] Hardy's GDM
Hi there! Here is my official announcement of my interpretation of the clearlooks-engine. My version is called creamlooks. Ut us based on clear-/xl_cheeselooks, but has some advantages: I. Bugfixes: In xl_cheeselooks there was a problem with windows with menubar but without toolbar. It was very ugly. II. New features: 1. I tried to change the menus and menubaritems that they look like one single widget (We discussed that before...). It works now. 2. I wanted to be as close as possible to Ken's Union-stuff. I think some parts looks very close to this... 3. The ugly (my opinion) patterns on the notebook-tabs are changed. 4. Most corners are a little bit less rounded. You can download the stuff here: http://kieselsteinchen.ki.funpic.de/creamlooks.tar.gz You can read more about it (screenshot...) here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Hardy/Alternate/creamlooks cheers Sebastian P. [ubuntu-in] NetGear WG311V3 wireless adapter does not work in Hardy Heron
Hi VK, Thank you for your suggestions. My Ubuntu did not recognize dhcp command. I configured wireless connection manually and it is working. I had to change my router security from none to WPA. Thanks a lot for your advise. The things I miss now is automatic connection, the icon animation which tells me whether connected or connecting. I also miss the speed information with mouse over the icon. I also notice that I had to configure wireless connection next time I booted Ubuntu. I do not know whether it would be a routine everytime I boot. I am ectremely thankful to your advise. Best Regards. -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in
[ubuntu-in] Is Ubuntu messing up on QA?
A rant originally posted to the linux-delhi (and other) lists by Raju Mathur - a Unix guru of nearly 2 decades' standing, and a member of the OSI board. This is only the latest example of a phenomenon I am noticing of late. I think Ubuntu is experiencing a backlash that they would do well to pay careful attention to - as this is happening among the geek / early adopter demographic that is a powerful opinion-shaper. Udhay Date: Sun, 16 Mar 2008 10:25:22 +0530 From: Raj Mathur [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [LIG] [LONG] [RANT] Ubuntu and Quality Control To: The Linux-Delhi mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii First thing yesterday morning: urgent IM message from Suresh Ramasubramanian (hoster of this mailing list): Mailman is down, can you help? OK, so we start investigating his box. He has upgraded Python2.4 to Python2.5, and applied a Mailman security patch package. However, whenever we try to access the page, the server barfs. On to server logs -- syntax error in one of the Mailman support files. Right, I can understand an upgrade causing logical errors, but a SYNTAX ERROR!??!? Nah, I must be missing something, so I look all over the 2 upgrades. Switch back to Python2.4 from Python2.5, no joy. Recompile all the Mailman files from scratch, no joy. Recompile the Ubuntu Mailman package from source and reinstall it, no joy. Bang head against wall, no joy. Finally, desperate, I start comparing Mailman files on Suresh' server against Mailman installed on other servers. While they are different versions of Mailman, I do notice one anomaly: where one file has: mlist.subject_prefix = Utils.canonstr( val, mlist.preferred_language) - *** Note this line *** elif property == 'info': Suresh' server has: mlist.subject_prefix = Utils.canonstr( elif property == 'info': Saying, `no, no, it can't be!' I insert the missing line into the file on the broken machine, cross fingers, eyes, legs, etc and restart Mailman. It works! [Shift to today] Ubuntu issues a security notice that says, in effect, ``We screwed up with the previous Mailman patch, so here's the latest and greatest version of Mailman, and this one really, Really, REALLY works! Believe us!''. I don't believe them. In the past 6 months Ubuntu has issues 80 new security advisories. For those 80 advisories, they have issued no less than SEVEN regressions (a regression is a patch to fix a broken patch). A near-10% regression rate sends only one message to me -- we can't be bothered with doing any quality control before we release packages. Before Ubuntu came onto the scene, I didn't even /know/ what a regression was. Today it's a common word in my lexicon, because of Ubuntu's pathetic testing and quality control process (or lack of process, more likely). An operating system vendor who issues a package with a syntax error (so that the package doesn't even start up, leave alone do something wrong), is a pure crap snake oil vendor in my book. So, the question: will I trust Ubuntu on an Internet-connected system? Nah. Will I trust Ubuntu on a server? Er, please excuse me while I finishing laughing hysterically! Use Debian or CentOS or any of those reasonably tested other distributions for your boxes, and when someone asks you to use Ubuntu, in the immortal words of Fancy Raygun, ``Just Say No!''. [ubuntu-in] Is Ubuntu messing up on QA?
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hello Ubunteros, Although most of us know why Ubuntu is not messing up in QA, I thought it would be better to enlighten others in the list. To start with, I will refer to the post by Richad Johnson in his blog (and eventually to Planet Ubuntu) about the latest breakdown in libc6 package in Ubuntu 8.04 Alpha 6 [1] First, understand the difference between a stable release and an alpha release and to whom it is mainly meant for. Stable release, the last being Ubuntu 7.10 and the last LTS being Ubuntu Dapper, are meant for Public or in Ubuntu terms, the Human Beings. Whereas, the Alpha release are meant for the developer community to test and make sure the packages are good enough to be pushed into a stable release. There is indeed a warning made for you when you are dealing with Alpha releases Pre-releases of Hardy are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a stable system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent breakage. They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs. So, when you download-install or upgrade your stable version of Ubuntu to an Alpha version, you are consciously accepting the fact that things may seriously break ad you are ready to face such things. Secondly, you are seriously advised not to use an Alpha release for you stable system requirements. Alpha release *is* our QA process and it is meant for those daring devils who have passion to try them out, find and report bugs, try fixing issues and a lot more. It is not meant for any one who doesn't want to look at things breaking and who do not have the patience or inclination to fix things on their own. If you do not understand this, your rants are meaningless. Please stop saying Ubuntu broke my system or Ubuntu doesn't work for me if you tried an alpha release and it messed you up. Even most of us try alpha releases over a VM, or at least have a old box to spare the occasional curses of a breakage. Please understand and stop ranting! :) [1] http://blog.nixternal.com/2008.03.13/libc6-nightmare-or-just-a-bad-dream/ -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFH3et9k4vYYS/wECYRAv5bAJ9jmk0XphcEA8I3SRK4PRcg87YobgCdFrcq XoXXZUONDkXUMViDH9S4CFs= =Bhw4 -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in

Thank you all for your replies and all the advice you have given. I really do appreciate it. When I posted my 'rant', I thought that I may get a couple of replies saying I agree or I don't agree. I never thought that you would all go to the trouble you have done. What a fantastic forum!! You have given me several firms to investigate, which I will do over the next few days. Things are very hectic here at the moment, so I won't be able to do anything immediately. I have read some good reports about Efficientpc (except that they are very bad at replying to e-mails). Also I think a day in Manchester to visit the two Manchester firms will probably be called for. Thanks again to all who replied. Bom curso! Métodos possíveis Os seguintes métodos de instalação serão abordados nessa lição: * Utilizando código fonte * Utilizando APT Esse curso foi feito utilizando a versão 2.6.4. Caso já tenha o rsync instalado verifique sua versão com o seguinte comando: rsync --version rsync version 2.6.4 protocol version 29 Copyright (C) 1996-2005 by Andrew Tridgell and others http://rsync.samba.org/ Capabilities: 64-bit files, socketpairs, hard links, symlinks, batchfiles, inplace, IPv6, 64-bit system inums, 64-bit internal inums rsync comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY. This is free software, and you are welcome to redistribute it under certain conditions. See the GNU General Public Licence for details. [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ su Password: capim-vm:/home/capim# E depois utilize o comando apt-get update para atualizar o banco. capim-vm:/etc# apt-get update [output] Para instalar o rsync, utilize o comando apt-get install rsync. capim-vm:/etc# apt-get

[Bug 202752] Re: [CVE-2008-1227] Stack-based buffer overflow causes DoS
I've uploaded a Hardy fix, and the same patch is easily applied to all previous releases. However, a comment in the Fedora bug indicates that downgrading fixed the crash, which probably means the vulnerability is mitigated by something else in previous releases (except perhaps Gutsy). There's also no known exploit, so we can't test it. I'm not confident to push it out to stable releases. ** Changed in: silc-toolkit (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) = William Grant (fujitsu) Status: Confirmed = Fix Committed -- [CVE-2008-1227] Stack-based buffer overflow causes DoS https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/202752 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 201577] Re: Gnome-settings-daemon dying
Well thats great, but when I go to /var/crash I do not see a crash file for gnome-settings-daemon. It seems that you should try and verify circumstances prior to arbitraily invalidating a problem report. The problem hasn't gone away, I just don't specifically see a crash file for the gnome-settings-daemon. Now if you can advise on how the daemon can be configured to make a crash file or configured to not try restating too many times we might have a fighting chance on this one. Also the problem existed on 03/12 then after the glibc faux pas a few days ago it was necessary for me to re-install Hardy and the problem came back with the new installation. My first guess would be something stored somewhere within my home directory, but I have no idea exactly where to look... Please provide a tad bit more advice before shutting down a problem in the future! [Bug 201577] Re: Gnome-settings-daemon dying
running the command from the commandline I receive the following error and still for the record no crash file in /var/crash... :~ gnome-settings-daemon --sync The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'. I think that using `$HOME/.config/Murmur` or `$HOME/.config/Mumble- server` in either case could be better. --- cat /etc/lsb-release --- DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu DISTRIB_RELEASE=8.04 DISTRIB_CODENAME=hardy DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION=Ubuntu hardy (development branch) --- /cat /etc/lsb-release --- --- apt-cache policy mumble-server --- mumble-server: Installed: 1.1.3-0ubuntu1 Candidate: 1.1.3-0ubuntu1 Version table: *** 1.1.3-0ubuntu1 0 500 http://archive.ubuntu.com hardy/universe Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status --- /apt-cache policy mumble-server --- ** Affects: mumble (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Assignee: Thorvald Natvig (slicer) Status: New ** Changed in: mumble (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) = Thorvald Natvig (slicer) -- mumble-server uses weird directories to store its information https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/202766 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 111555] Re: package gstreamer sw midi playback plugin
very curious... I decided to install Hardy to my HD and begin inspecting various programs; I installed a bunch of the Gstreamer plugins, including gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad and installed timidity and freepats. Suddenly my MIDIs can play in Totem! Ununstalling timidity makes no change; uninstalling freepats makes it not work (a little research later and I'm here). However, when it gets to the end of the song, I get the search for suitable codec? message, but the result is There is no matching application available. (yet... it was just playing! 8-) Some bug in there somewhere, but its great to listen to MIDIs in Totem! -- package gstreamer sw midi playback plugin https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/111555 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 71004] Re: [kubuntu edgy and feisty] usplash_down causes shutdown to hang
Can I put that on hold as an option for for a few days as I'm trying a simpler solution: removing usplash from /etc/init.d The *very* preliminary results (two shutdowns) are encouraging---no white screen freeze---but I need to give it a bit longer to see whether that's just luck! [Bug 202729] Re: status text don't change
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures At a minimum, we need: 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem, 2. the behavior you expected, and 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). We would like to break dependancy upon the gdesklets-data package which contains many unusable applets and therefore may frustrate users and discourage them from using gdesklets. gdesklets-data package needs to be heavily updated and now as 4 applets are part of the core there's no need to have that depandency. Please make it this way.
