[ubuntu-art] Hardy's GDM

2008-03-16 Thread Nick Bauermeister
I'd like to point out, that the glow on the Ubuntu logo is far too
aggressive.
It shouldn't be white but bright brown or yellowish (the glow on the
lower bar looks good).

I also found a bug, that when you type an incorrect password, the red
warning text is behind the input field.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Hardy's GDM

2008-03-16 Thread Sebastian Billaudelle
Hi there!

Here is my official announcement of my interpretation of the
clearlooks-engine.
My version is called creamlooks. Ut us based on clear-/xl_cheeselooks,
but has some advantages:
I. Bugfixes:
In xl_cheeselooks there was a problem with windows with menubar but
without toolbar. It was very ugly.

II. New features:
1. I tried to change the menus and menubaritems that they look like one
single widget (We discussed that before...). It works now.
2. I wanted to be as close as possible to Ken's Union-stuff. I think
some parts looks very close to this...
3. The ugly (my opinion) patterns on the notebook-tabs are changed.
4. Most corners are a little bit less rounded.

You can download the stuff here:
http://kieselsteinchen.ki.funpic.de/creamlooks.tar.gz

You can read more about it (screenshot...) here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Hardy/Alternate/creamlooks

cheers Sebastian

P. S.: My modem is working now...

[ubuntu-in] NetGear WG311V3 wireless adapter does not work in Hardy Heron

2008-03-16 Thread Mohan Dasaratha Rao
Hi VK,

Thank you for your suggestions. My Ubuntu did not recognize dhcp command. I
configured wireless connection manually and it is working. I had to change
my router security from none to WPA. Thanks a lot for your advise. The
things I miss now is automatic connection, the icon animation which tells me
whether connected or connecting. I also miss the speed information with
mouse over the icon. I also notice that I had to configure wireless
connection next time I booted Ubuntu. I do not know whether it would be a
routine everytime I boot. I am ectremely thankful to your advise. Best
Regards.

[ubuntu-in] Is Ubuntu messing up on QA?

2008-03-16 Thread Udhay Shankar N
A rant originally posted to the linux-delhi (and other) lists by Raju
Mathur - a Unix guru of nearly 2 decades' standing, and a member of
the OSI board.

This is only the latest example of a phenomenon I am noticing of
late. I think Ubuntu is experiencing a backlash that they would do
well to pay careful attention to - as this is happening among the
geek / early adopter demographic that is a powerful opinion-shaper.

Udhay

From: Raj Mathur [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: [LIG] [LONG] [RANT] Ubuntu and Quality Control
To: The Linux-Delhi mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED],
 [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

First thing yesterday morning: urgent IM message from Suresh
Ramasubramanian (hoster of this mailing list):

Mailman is down, can you help?

OK, so we start investigating his box. He has upgraded Python2.4 to
Python2.5, and applied a Mailman security patch package. However,
whenever we try to access the page, the server barfs. On to server
logs -- syntax error in one of the Mailman support files.

Right, I can understand an upgrade causing logical errors, but a SYNTAX
ERROR!??!? Nah, I must be missing something, so I look all over the 2
upgrades. Switch back to Python2.4 from Python2.5, no joy. Recompile
all the Mailman files from scratch, no joy. Recompile the Ubuntu
Mailman package from source and reinstall it, no joy. Bang head
against wall, no joy.

Finally, desperate, I start comparing Mailman files on Suresh' server
against Mailman installed on other servers. While they are different
versions of Mailman, I do notice one anomaly: where one file has:

 mlist.subject_prefix = Utils.canonstr(
 val, mlist.preferred_language) - *** Note this line ***
 elif property == 'info':

Suresh' server has:

 mlist.subject_prefix = Utils.canonstr(
 elif property == 'info':

Saying, `no, no, it can't be!' I insert the missing line into the file
on the broken machine, cross fingers, eyes, legs, etc and restart
Mailman.

It works!

[Shift to today]

Ubuntu issues a security notice that says, in effect, ``We screwed up
with the previous Mailman patch, so here's the latest and greatest
version of Mailman, and this one really, Really, REALLY works! Believe
us!''.

I don't believe them. In the past 6 months Ubuntu has issues 80 new
security advisories. For those 80 advisories, they have issued no less
than SEVEN regressions (a regression is a patch to fix a broken patch).
A near-10% regression rate sends only one message to me -- we can't be
bothered with doing any quality control before we release packages.

Before Ubuntu came onto the scene, I didn't even /know/ what a
regression was. Today it's a common word in my lexicon, because of
Ubuntu's pathetic testing and quality control process (or lack of
process, more likely). An operating system vendor who issues a package
with a syntax error (so that the package doesn't even start up, leave
alone do something wrong), is a pure crap snake oil vendor in my book.

So, the question: will I trust Ubuntu on an Internet-connected system?
Nah.

Will I trust Ubuntu on a server? Er, please excuse me while I finishing
laughing hysterically!

Use Debian or CentOS or any of those reasonably tested other
distributions for your boxes, and when someone asks you to use Ubuntu,
in the immortal words of Fancy Raygun, ``Just Say No!''.

Regards,

[ubuntu-in] Is Ubuntu messing up on QA?

2008-03-16 Thread Parthan SR
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hello Ubunteros,

Although most of us know why Ubuntu is not messing up in QA, I thought
it would be better to enlighten others in the list. To start with, I
will refer to the post by Richad Johnson in his blog (and eventually to
Planet Ubuntu) about the latest breakdown in libc6 package in Ubuntu
8.04 Alpha 6 [1]

First, understand the difference between a stable release and an alpha
release and to whom it is mainly meant for. Stable release, the last
being Ubuntu 7.10 and the last LTS being Ubuntu Dapper, are meant for
Public or in Ubuntu terms, the Human Beings. Whereas, the Alpha release
are meant for the developer community to test and make sure the packages
are good enough to be pushed into a stable release. There is indeed a
warning made for you when you are dealing with Alpha releases

Pre-releases of Hardy are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a
stable system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional,
even frequent breakage. They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu
developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing
bugs.

So, when you download-install or upgrade your stable version of Ubuntu
to an Alpha version, you are consciously accepting the fact that things
may seriously break ad you are ready to face such things. Secondly, you
are seriously advised not to use an Alpha release for you stable system
requirements. Alpha release *is* our QA process and it is meant for
those daring devils who have passion to try them out, find and report
bugs, try fixing issues and a lot more. It is not meant for any one who
doesn't want to look at things breaking and who do not have the patience
or inclination to fix things on their own. If you do not understand
this, your rants are meaningless. Please stop saying Ubuntu broke my
system or Ubuntu doesn't work for me if you tried an alpha release
and it messed you up. Even most of us try alpha releases over a VM, or
at least have a old box to spare the occasional curses of a breakage.
Please understand and stop ranting! :)

Parthan,

How does this apply to the post I forwarded? Raju applied a Ubuntu
*security patch* which broke mailman, and it is his contention that
this is due to bad QA practices. He didn't install an alpha release of
anything.

Udhay,

Please check the subject line of my mail, it didn't have a Re:. It
wasn't a reply to your mail or one to Raju's complaint, rather a general
mail as I expect some one to follow on specifying the current libc6
debacle.I just used the same subject line ;) And, some one indeed moved
the Raju's mail to GLUG-Bom mailing list, converting it into alpha
release issue IIRC.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] New computer nightmare!

2008-03-16 Thread Keith Powell
Thank you all for your replies and all the advice you have given. I
really do appreciate it. When I posted my 'rant', I thought that I may
get a couple of replies saying I agree or I don't agree. I never
thought that you would all go to the trouble you have done. What a
fantastic forum!!

You have given me several firms to investigate, which I will do over the
next few days. Things are very hectic here at the moment, so I won't be
able to do anything immediately.

I have read some good reports about Efficientpc (except that they are
very bad at replying to e-mails). Also I think a day in Manchester to
visit the two Manchester firms will probably be called for.

Thanks again to all who replied.

Keith

Yes your icecast server and/or relay will need to be a static ip and
clients (listeners) can have a dynamic ip.

As utilidades do rsync

* cópia de permissões e outros atributos dos arquivos;
* não é necessário permissão de super usuário (i.e. root) para
utilizá-lo;
* permite acesso de usuários anônimos.

instrutor do curso. Bom curso!

* Utilizando código fonte
* Utilizando APT

seguinte comando: rsync --version

rsync version 2.6.4 protocol version 29
Copyright (C) 1996-2005 by Andrew Tridgell and others
http://rsync.samba.org/
Capabilities: 64-bit files, socketpairs, hard links, symlinks,
batchfiles,
  inplace, IPv6, 64-bit system inums, 64-bit internal
inums

rsync comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY. This is free software, and
you
are welcome to redistribute it under certain conditions. See the
GNU
General Public Licence for details.

  A
aproveitamento do curso.

Password:
capim-vm:/home/capim#

Extraia os arquivos em uma pasta temporária.

capim-vm:~# cd /tmp
capim-vm:/tmp# tar -xvzf ~/rsync-*.tar.gz

Configure o o pacote com o script configure.

capim-vm:/tmp# cd /tmp/rsync-*
capim-vm:/tmp/rsync-2.6.4# ./configure

Compile e instale:

capim-vm:/tmp/rsync-2.6.4# make
capim-vm:/tmp/rsync-2.6.4# make install

O executável do rsync provavelmente estará instalado no
diretório: /usr/local/bin. Verifique se o rsync está realmente instalado
utilizando o comando: rsync

capim-vm:/etc# rsync
[output]

capim-vm:/etc# rsync
bash: rsync: command not found

Pronto!

capim-vm:/etc# apt-get update
[output]

Para instalar o rsync, utilize o comando apt-get install rsync.

capim-vm:/etc# apt-get

$sudo chown -R www-data.www-data /home/nilsoft/www/spnet

[Ubuntu-BR] Afinador para instrumentos musicais.

2008-03-16 Thread Salles
Prezados amigos,

instrumento,
por exemplo:

um lá 3 do piano -- A3 = 440Hz = nota midi 69 (5ª corda do violão)
um mi 2 do piano -- E2 = 330 hz = nota midi 64 (Mi bordão do violão)
e por ai vai,

http://www.kokkinizita.net/linuxaudio/jaaa-pict.html

http://audioware.cifraclub.terra.com.br/download-95-guitar-tuner-for-linux.html

(no XP o SoundForge faz isso) (no OS X o AudioTest faz isso )

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Afinador para instrumentos musicais.

2008-03-16 Thread Salles

via diapasões e outros do gênero, recursos avançados eram extremamente
caros.
do percurso.
precisar.

For using this pre alpha SANE sq930x backend the following files need to be
patched/placed:

sane backends (use SANE version 1.0.18 or higher):
placed in backend directory (1.0.18): sq930x.c, sq930x.h and sq930x.conf.in
files.
placed in doc/descriptions directory: sq930x.desc file.
patched in backend directory: dll.conf.in (add: sq930x)
patched configure.in (add to list BACKENDS:
sq930x)

Run: autoconf

patched Makefile.in:backend/Makefile.in
add lines after # We must not build SANE
backend libraries ..:
libsane-sq930x.la:
../sanei/sanei_constrain_value.lo
libsane-sq930x.la: ../sanei/sanei_usb.lo
Check/add by DISTFILES: sq930x.c sq930x.h sq930x.conf.in

Run ./configure --sysconfdir=/etc --prefix=/usr --mandir=/usr/share,
make, and make install (as root) as usual.

sane-frontend (use SANE version 1.0.14 or higher):

Use export SANE_DEBUG_SQ930X=255 to enable debugging.

Check file permisions from (for example 0666): (hotplug) /proc/bus/usb/0xx/0yy
or
   (udev)/dev/bus/usb/0xx/0yy

If you want to add your device, just add code until the backend works.

[Bug 172985] Re: LCD Brightness buttons do not work on Thinkpad X61 Tablet

2008-03-16 Thread pullin
I know it it is a pretty miserable fix, but:

1) I seem to get all the various brightness levels with this modifications on
my X61 Tablet, model 7764-CTO
2) acpi-support is installed; I can run acpi_fakekey, but acpi_fakekey 224 or
225 does nothing, and does not generate any entries in /var/log/acpid

[Bug 202752] Re: [CVE-2008-1227] Stack-based buffer overflow causes DoS

2008-03-16 Thread William Grant
I've uploaded a Hardy fix, and the same patch is easily applied to all
previous releases. However, a comment in the Fedora bug indicates that
downgrading fixed the crash, which probably means the vulnerability is
mitigated by something else in previous releases (except perhaps Gutsy).
There's also no known exploit, so we can't test it. I'm not confident to
push it out to stable releases.

[Bug 201577] Re: Gnome-settings-daemon dying

2008-03-16 Thread Sam Williams
Well thats great, but when I go to /var/crash I do not see a crash file
for gnome-settings-daemon. It seems that you should try and verify
circumstances prior to arbitraily invalidating a problem report. The
problem hasn't gone away, I just don't specifically see a crash file for
the gnome-settings-daemon. Now if you can advise on how the daemon can
be configured to make a crash file or configured to not try restating
too many times we might have a fighting chance on this one.

Also the problem existed on 03/12 then after the glibc faux pas a few
days ago it was necessary for me to re-install Hardy and the problem
came back with the new installation. My first guess would be something
stored somewhere within my home directory, but I have no idea exactly
where to look...

Please provide a tad bit more advice before shutting down a problem in
the future!

Thanks for the response and sorry for the impatience!

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please attach your X server configuration file
(/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) to the
bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the
Attachment: box below. Could you please also try to run without any
/etc/X11/xorg.conf and let Xorg autodetect your display and video card?
Please also attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this attempt. Thanks in

[Bug 201577] Re: Gnome-settings-daemon dying

2008-03-16 Thread Sam Williams
running the command from the commandline I receive the following error
and still for the record no crash file in /var/crash...

:~ gnome-settings-daemon --sync
The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'.
  (Details: serial 107 error_code 1 request_code 151 minor_code 6)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I tried running gnome-settings-daemon under gdb but there is no
debugging symbols... I noticed there is also no gnome-settings-daemon-
dbg package...

[Bug 193209] Re: Install stops on dbconfig-common: flushing administrative password

2008-03-16 Thread Madpenguin
I think problem should be from dbconfig-common, once it's happen with
most of the package that require mysql, my distro is debian lenny

I try to fix this, but it's not a real fix during that error all
database were import to database already

#vi /var/lib/dpkg/info/cacti.postinst

comment the line
# source dbconfig-common stuff
#. /usr/share/dbconfig-common/dpkg/postinst.mysql
#dbc_first_version=0.8.6g-3
#dbc_generate_include=php:/etc/cacti/debian.php
#dbc_generate_include_owner=root:www-data
#dbc_generate_include_perms=0640
#dbc_generate_include_args=--dbname=database_default
--dbpass=database_password --dbuser=database_username
--dbserver=database_hostname --dbport=database_port
#dbc_go cacti $@

...

#db_get cacti/webserver
#db_stop

so after comment out .. then runinstallation script again

finally it's worked for me ^^

[Bug 202759] [NEW] Please sync sarg 2.2.5-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2008-03-16 Thread William Grant
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sarg

Please sync sarg 2.2.5-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main).

No FFe is required, as all upstream changes are either cosmetic or
security fixes.

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:

The only change was fixing a bashism by using /bin/bash in
sarg-reports. Debian has done this too.

Changelog since current hardy version 2.2.3.1-2ubuntu1:

sarg (2.2.5-1) unstable; urgency=high

  * Urgency high due to security fixes

  * New upstream release
- Fixes script insertion in user-agent report

  * debian/{sarg-reports,control}
- Make sarg-reports a bash script and depend on bash. This works
around bashishms in sarg-reports. (Closes: #465353)

 -- Luigi Gangitano [EMAIL PROTECTED] Wed, 05 Mar 2008 00:34:29 +0100

sarg (2.2.4-1) UNRELEASED; urgency=low

  * New upstream release
- Fixes security issue when parsing useragent.log

 -- Luigi Gangitano [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mon, 03 Mar 2008 12:39:26 +0100

sarg (2.2.3.1-3) UNRELEASED; urgency=low

  * debian/control
- Upgraded dependecies to apache2 and libapache2-mod-php5

[Bug 153425] Re: (Multiseat) screen shifts when /dev/console written to

2008-03-16 Thread vandebo
My previous work around had one negative side affect... with console
output redirected to the serial port, unplugging my usb keyboard (which
generates several lines of console output) caused the machine to hang
hard. A new work around I found is to specify the kernel boot parameter
no-scroll. According to the bootparam man page: This option tells the
console driver not to use hardware scroll (where a scroll is effected by
moving the screen origin in video memory, instead of moving the data).
It is required by certain Braille machines.

[Bug 202764] [NEW] Network dies when I use rsync to copy files to this machine

2008-03-16 Thread Bob Myers
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu hardy Alpha 6

I'm not sure where the bug lies. It could also be in openssh or any
number of places.

Here's what I want to happen:
I'm trying to backup files from a Gutsy machine to a Hardy machine. Using rsync
it should just copy the files and/or diffs across.

Here's what actually happens:
From an Ubuntu Gutsy machine I enter this at the command line:
rsync -avz /here/ hardybox:/there

It begins to copy the files from here to there. I watch for a few
minutes and then the verbose output from rsync just hangs. If I try and
ping the Hardy machine all the packets are dropped. When I go to the
Hardy machine I can't get out to the network anymore.

To fix it I have to restart the network.

[Bug 202766] [NEW] mumble-server uses weird directories to store its information

2008-03-16 Thread hangy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mumble-server

If started without any arguments, mumble-server uses a probably uncommon
directory to store its data to:
a) `murmurd` uses the current directory.
b) `murmer-wrapper` uses `$HOME/murmur`.

I think that using `$HOME/.config/Murmur` or `$HOME/.config/Mumble-
server` in either case could be better.

[Bug 111555] Re: package gstreamer sw midi playback plugin

2008-03-16 Thread Conrad Knauer
very curious... I decided to install Hardy to my HD and begin
inspecting various programs; I installed a bunch of the Gstreamer
plugins, including gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad and installed timidity and
freepats. Suddenly my MIDIs can play in Totem! Ununstalling timidity
makes no change; uninstalling freepats makes it not work (a little
research later and I'm here). However, when it gets to the end of the
song, I get the search for suitable codec? message, but the result is
There is no matching application available. (yet... it was just
playing! 8-)

Some bug in there somewhere, but its great to listen to MIDIs in Totem!

Can I put that on hold as an option for for a few days as I'm trying a

The *very* preliminary results (two shutdowns) are encouraging---no

that's just luck!

[Bug 202729] Re: status text don't change

2008-03-16 Thread Ilya B
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

Ha Noi is the Capital of the country and there's only one time zone in
Viet Nam. There's no reason to keep Sai Gon

Hi,

the new release 0.36 contains 4 supported gdesklets applets (Calendar,
Clock, Quote-of-the-Day and 15pieces).
We would like to break dependancy upon the gdesklets-data package which
contains many unusable applets and therefore may frustrate users and
discourage them from using gdesklets.
gdesklets-data package needs to be heavily updated and now as 4 applets
are part of the core there's no need to have that depandency.
Please make it this way.

Thanks,

Robo
