Re: [ubuntu-art] ubuntu-art Site
Several years ago we used to store all the concepts here: https://wiki. ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/NewWave (this is the page of my old theme). What happened to that place? I have nothing against creating many places for artwork as this would encourage fair point of view and ratings. But the question I asked is Is there really a need for such a place and can't you use already build infrastructure to store your work? You could try to raise some interest outside Ubuntu. I'll definitely ask some more about this. If it's worth it? Is it possible the result would help you personally enough to make good for the effort invested? Could it lead to an influx of decent themes? Perhaps. I would likely try it out if it existed, but I would not write such a tool. I'm much too disappointed of GTK theming and every additional detail I learned about GTK made me like it less. But as you say I might wait and see what Gnome 3.0 will deliver on the theming side. I thought that later this could be integrated with the css theme engine by simply having two (or more in the future) buttons: Export pixbuf based theme and Export CSS based theme. For the content of Theme Settings: try labels on the left. I just tried to save some space. On Metacity Settings: Title parts order needs explanation right in place or an interface where you can move blocks around (most likely too complicated to code to be worth it, though). Sure it does need this and will get one in the real project. You would either have to remember the date of last modification on export, or keep a copy of the last export around for a comparison. But I suggest this could be changed by using larger images (but slowing down the whole theme with load times) If I accept your idea for the svg workflow then how could we specify desired borders? Re: [ubuntu-art] NW Config update + idea
В 14:45 +0100 на 09.01.2010 (сб), Thorsten Wilms написа: Well, even if you really have to do that, there would still be an advantage to having fixed names and an SVG template. It just wouldn't be the source of _all_ final images, then. Porbably possible :) Either the border values have to specified separately (a GUI tool could help), or perhaps you could have a layer with rectangles in the SVG and have a script that queries for their dimensions. Aren't there elements where stretch is pretty much a must? Or do you have an example of an element that would have to be stretched in one of them, but not another? Example: image { function = SLIDER recolorable = TRUE state= PRELIGHT file = Images/Range/null.png border = { 0, 0, 0, 0 } stretch = TRUE overlay_file= Images/Range/slider-vert-prelight.png overlay_stretch = FALSE orientation = VERTICAL } where the thermer may want to stretch the overlay or image { function = BOX state = NORMAL detail= spinbutton_up recolorable = TRUE file = Images/Spin/spin-up-bg.png border= { 2, 2, 2, 2} stretch = TRUE overlay_file = Images/Spin/arrow-up.png overlay_stretch = FALSE } where you might want to stretch the arrow somehow and use some specific image for bg. Still it is very uncommon to do so :) If the creator want he can open the file and edit this manually. As you say a GUI that creates a template folder with template svgs (probably with example content in them) would be perfect along with that rect that the designer specifies to be a border. [ubuntu-art] New Wave User Requests
Hello everybody, This thread is about telling me what you would like to have changed/added in New Wave so that it better fits your needs. Fell free to express everything. Not everything that is requested thought will be included because first I'll have to make sure it will be of benefit to everybody else using the theme. So here is a list of things that are already changed and will make it in 0.8.1: - Combobox fix in Open Office and other apps that use the old format option-box. - Brasero notifications fix. - Scrollbars inside OO and FF are much better looking and integrating. - Metacity improvements for dialog windows (bottom line in titlebar and modal dialogs look different). unfortunately these additions do not show when you use compiz. The firefox theme is only beta plus it would probably not be included in Ubuntu. But if Kenneth decides I will polish it some more and will provide a better version with some more tweaks and fixes. So there is this white border around it (I am talking about the dictionary applet). Thank you for the feedback. 1) It would be nice indeed but the image used for panels could not be stretched due to limitation of Gnome. So I'm using one universal image for top/bottom and all sized panels. If I make a highlight at the top of the image for the bottom panel it would be ugly in the top panel. i think that the panels stand out by their darker color and in the same time are usable. 2) This is also a problem with GTK because the text control could not have transparent backgrounds (the white pixels left) thus I'm using the most appropriate color for the control to fit it's usual (light grey or white) background. You cannot see this in clearlooks because the panel is light. Also the pixmap engine is known for not such a great flexibility when it comes to integration and merging of widgets. Probably it is possible to make a exception matching for textboxes in panels but that would not solve the problem on other dark backrounds. Thank you :) - The scrollbars are very experimental and they work well on some widgets and not so good on others. It is very good for embedded lists and tree views, but not so good on fx. GMail's embedded text editor (which I am using as I write this :-)). Another problematic case is when the scrollbar is on the right. You can try this out in Gnome Terminal by configuring the Scrolling tab in its profile. I don't know how RTL languages lay out the scrollbars... I agree that there are some apps that ignore the rules of positioning the scrollbars but you can get used to it. Even if it is only scrollbar it preserves it's shape and general sunken look at the left side. - Have you experimented with some kind of left edge on the scrollbar. The problem is that it appears a bit floating the widget on the left of it does not provide a natural border (again see embedded GMail editor). You mean right edge? No I haven't experimented because my purpose is to cut lines in order to make the interface look simpler. I have done this because ppl use the only slider to drag the contents up and down and the arrows very rarely. That is why I decided the right lines are not necessary at all. - Looking at The Widget Factory It looks like the text entries in GtkCombo does not align pixel perfect with their arrow-buttons (there seems to be some cruft in the right corners of the entries). GtkComboBoxEntry looks good though. I know for this but don't know how to match (in the gtkrc) the entry of the combo in order to make it with better shape to fit the button (currently drawn: normal entry + partial button). Re: [ubuntu-art] New Wave 0.8 Preview
@ Saleel Well I'm not real gui designer either but I'm trying my best at creating usable themes. Regarding the progressbar it is usually so rapidly moving that you don't see anything. In the cases you see it I want to attract the attention of the user to the part that is moving forward by making it more orange. @ Sebastian I really like the new scrollbars too, but I'm not sure about the decision to make them without the arrows. I guess I just have to try and see. One thing that I would add it's a focus state for the text fields. Maybe an orange border like the buttons. Overall, I love New Wave. Well the arrows are not a big problem because without them the interface looks much more consistent and because we all use the scroll wheel or drag the sliders instead of clicking on arrows. I have made a special version of arrow states that will fit the new scrollbars and everybody will be able to turn them on/off by simly modifying 2 lines of the gtkrc file. I wish there was some small graphical python utility to do that but I have no experience at this.
