[Bug 774839] [NEW] Grub error 17 - first time booting Natty after install

2011-05-01 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

As the summary says, my first boot after a fresh install (over the top
of 10.10) yielded a Grub error 17. My guess is that the installer didn't
clobber the 10.10 grub, and that that was what was picked up at boot
time. I first tried changing the order of the hard drives in BIOS, but I
got error 17 on two others, an finally system disk not found on the
fourth. (Did I really have three grubs hanging around? Possible, as the
computer's been through many years of dist-upgrades, and I did have
related problems in the past.) I finally logged in via the live cd, and
ran grub-install against the first disk as indicated by the BIOS. This
worked.

This is the kind of bug that will leave the average consumer to drop of
their computer at the geek squad to have windows reinstalled, and will
permanently sour them on ubuntu. It's crucial that ubiquity be able to
detect existing boot loaders, detect bios disk order, and leave the
system in a state that will boot.

[Bug 774003] [NEW] Installation lost two of my disks

2011-04-30 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I did a fresh install (over an existing 10.10 install) with 11.04.

I have 5 SATA disks; 4 on the main motherboard controller, 1 hanging off
a RAID card (not running in RAID mode). During installation, because I
couldn't assign custom mount points to these disks, I left the
partitions unmapped.

Now I am unable to mount two of the five disks; sda1 and sdd1. Both of
these are identified in disk utility and by path, but do not have
uuids. When I attempt to mount them, mount says wrong fs type, bad
option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1, missing codepage or helper program,
or other error. Dmesg shows:

[Bug 769043] Re: Cannot manually specify a mount point in the manual partitoner

2011-04-30 Thread Reuben Firmin
I didn't set up mounts for 4 of my disks as a result of this bug. Two of
the unmapped partitions were unmountable after install (see 773770 for
error messages, which differed). After much gnashing of teeth, I figured
out that fsck'ing was the fix. However, it's obviously bad that the
filesystem was somehow corrupted by not being mapped.

[Bug 773770] [NEW] Ubiquity doesn't allow you to assign custom mount points

2011-04-29 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

The new 11.04 installer is very nice, but it didn't allow me to assign
custom mount points to my many partitions. My only options were to
choose from the preexisting menu, or not mount them. I chose the latter
and now my only option would appear to be to edit fstab. Not a huge

[Bug 706570] [NEW] JAVA_OPTS defined in /etc/init.d/tomcat6 do not propagate to startup

2011-01-23 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tomcat6

I have not fully investigated. However, I added the line:

JAVA_OPTS=$JAVA_OPTS -Xmx4096m -Xms1024m -XX:PermSize=256m
-XX:MaxPermSize=512m -XX:NewSize=128m
-Dri.home=/home/reubenf/code/depend

to /etc/init.d/tomcat6. The ri.home variable was not available to my
webapp after a tomcat restart.

I then added the same line to /var/share/tomcat6/bin/catalina.sh. Two
things happened:

1) The server failed to start because I have only 4GBs of RAM, and thus
max heap was too large. (Adjusted in catalina.sh and all was well.)

2) Once I fixed the max heap, ri.home was available to my webapp.

Thus for some reason JAVA_OPTs is not being passed between the scripts
properly. You should also define a spot in /etc/init.d/tomcat6 for
developers to add their own JAVA_OPTs, to minimize hackery.

although copying to it is horrendously slow. On Gnome, no dice.

Interestingly, when I have connected using MSC, and then log out of
Gnome, the device instantly connects. So something within Gnome is
causing this.

[Bug 192508] Re: mouse keys turns on randomly

2010-06-24 Thread Reuben Firmin
Ah, a comment in that thread is the key to this, I think - shift numlock
is the hotkey that turns the feature on and off. I bet that I've been
hitting that shortcut accidentally. Since it's such a destructive
shortcut (i.e. it wrecks the number pad's function) could this bug be
resolved by popping up an obvious-but-automatically-disappearing alert
when the shortcut is selected?

And, could we have an option in the settings dialog for mousekeys to
permanently disable the shortcut? I bet the combination of both of those
would solve this issue for most people.

[Bug 596139] Re: Copy and paste of data cells in calc alters formulas referring to those cells

2010-06-21 Thread Reuben Firmin
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: openoffice.org

This is best explained by reference to an example.

Attached is a spreadsheet with a series of formulas (a1:a9) and a series
of data (b5:d7). The formulas refer to the data; aX = bY + cY + dY,
  where Y is X + 4; in other words, A1 is B5 + C5 + D5, etc.

If you cut from C6 (a data cell, which A2 refers to) and paste into C8,
the formula in A2 is altered to B6 + C8 + D6, so the value in C8 is
counted twice (in A2 and in A4).

This is clearly buggy - I've never known any other spreadsheet app to
behave in this way. Cutting a data cell should NOT affect formula cells
(except to recalculate the formulas, perhaps.)

This is in Open Office 3.2.0, build 9483. Please fix!

[Bug 559543] [NEW] Simple scan does not allow changing quality settings when saving

Simple scan should allow some basic quality threshold settings to allow

[Bug 555756] [NEW] fsck froze while scanning second disk

2010-04-05 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: e2fsprogs

vmlinuz-2.6.32-19-generic, fsck, plymouth

I have 5 disks, and fsck decided that it needed to scan them all. After
30 minutes, the 2nd disk was 90% scanned; at that point, plymouth's dots
stopped blinking, and the message stayed on 90% done. I left it this
way for a further 30 minutes to see if it was working on something, and
then alt sysrq eub'ed it. On the second boot, fsck didn't even kick in
(I expected that it would rescan the 2nd, since it hadn't completed, and
then scan the 3rd, 4th and 5th disks, as it had intended to on the first
boot.)

[Bug 552046] Re: Lucid beta 1 won' t boot, plymouth launch broken

2010-04-01 Thread Reuben Firmin
Unfortunately the latest plymouth still does not work for me. Here's
what I see with --verbose:

4.1 - local-bottom and init-bottom begin and end
4.2 - forcedeth on ifname, highdma
A bunch of init lines from mountall, hostname, plymouth, hwclock, ureadahead,
with the last two:
init: plymouth state changed from post-start to running
init: Handling started event
6.8 - adding swap
7.3 EXT3 FS on sdb1
7.4 EXT4 FS on sde1
7.5 EXT4 FS on sdb3
8.2 EXT4 FS on sdc4
8.3 EXT3 FS on sdc1
8.7 EXT3 FS on sdc2
8.8 SCSI bus initialization
33.9 EXT4 FS on sda1
82.5 EXT3 FS on sdb2

After that, no more lines. Note the giant amount of time after the SCSI
bus initialization and sda1, sdb2 being initialized. I don't recall
where these are physically, but all of my drives are SATA, so I don't
think anything special is happening.

To try to workaround this, I renamed /etc/init/plymouth*.conf since
those are the files that are actually run. Now the system gets into a
loop on startup and then appears to timeout:

mountall: Skipping mounting /proc/bus/usb since Plymouth is not
available

It does not seem that this is a valid dependency.

[Bug 553290] [NEW] If plymouth is missing, and fstab has a usbfs, system won't boot

2010-04-01 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: plymouth

I had the following line in my fstab:

none /proc/bus/usb usbfs devgid=126,devmode=664 0 0

While debugging #552046, I removed plymouth and tried to boot.

Mountall looped 3657 times with the error message: Skipping mounting
/proc/bus/usb since plymouth is not installed. At that point, the boot
froze. I am encountering other boot issues, so perhaps this was not
causing the blockage. Regardless, the looping behaviour is a bug.

[Bug 552814] Re: vmlinuz-2.6.32-18-generic does not boot, various symptoms

Case 1 is now (possibly) invalid. I had the following line in my fstab:

I don't actually have a usbfs (AFAIK), so I commented this line out (due
to the behaviour noted in 553290).

[Bug 553299] [NEW] vmlinuz-2.6.32-18-generic does not recognize USB keyboard during boot

2010-04-01 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:

Using kernel vmlinuz-2.6.32-18-generic, the USB keyboard is not
recognized during boot.

Symptoms:

1) If I boot using init=/bin/bash, I cannot type anything on the bash prompt
when it appears
2) I cannot send alt sysrq sequences during boot
3) I cannot send alt ctrl del signal during boot, which is a blocker for me
since I am encountering #545536 (something mysterious blocking during boot that
needs alt ctrl del to get past)

Using vmlinuz-2.6.31-20-generic, these issues do not occur.

[Bug 553315] [NEW] Vuze search doesn't work...SWT issue?

Vuze search does not work. When I type in a search, the results screen
comes up, but a progress dial spins infinitely in the results area. I

[Bug 553329] [NEW] Incorrect wallpaper behaviour for dual screen (in lucid beta 1)

2010-04-01 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

In ubuntu 9.10, the default wallpapers would stretch across both screens
(using twinview, resolution is 3360x1050). In ubuntu 10.04, the default
wallpapers do not stretch across both screens, using any of the options.
I have to download a wallpaper that's explicitly 3360x1050 to make this
work. I don't know where the regression is - whether it's the art, the
nvidia driver, or the logic used by the desktop background widget to
handle stretch across dual screens.

[Bug 553285] Re: Package dependencies are too strong

2010-04-01 Thread Reuben Firmin
The system boots without it. Making e2fsprogs depend on it is a false
dependency. Further, it _has_ caused issues for people in the past (i.e.
yesterday); if bugs reoccur these dependencies leave people without a
way to circumvent it.

[Bug 553285] Re: Package dependencies are too strong

2010-04-01 Thread Reuben Firmin
Your call, but I think this is going to make a lot of people's lives
more difficult than they should be. Since filing the other bug about
plymouth blocking boot a couple days ago, I've encountered a good 1/2
dozen people (on ubuntuforums and IRC) who had the same issue, and had
removed plymouth to get the system to boot.

The workaround suggested this morning in IRC when I was debugging was to
change the names of /etc/init/plymouth*.conf in order to get past it. If
people do this to get past their plymouth problems, there's going to be
all kinds of mess on systems.

Is this standard ubuntu packaging policy? It would seem to me that the
correct packaging hierarchy would be to make ubuntu-desktop depend on
it, not e2fsprogs (which surely couldn't care less about plymouth being
present.)

Finally, Ian reported in IRC about 30 mins ago that the plymouth logo
theme is still causing his boot to freeze. Only the text one works for
him. (FWIW I booted with the text one also, not the logo one.)

Thanks

[Bug 553290] Re: Loops on mount failure when Plymouth not running

2010-04-01 Thread Reuben Firmin
I'm having trouble reproducing the looping behaviour, even after having
restored the usbfs to my fstab. I have cleaned up some udev configs
since then...any chance those were interacting with this line in fstab?

On the boot being frozen: after filing this report, I discovered the
workaround in #545536 - ctrl alt del when the boot is frozen makes it
succeed. So some process (possibly not mountall) is sticking. I do have
the ureadahead message mentioned in that bug, atlhough I believe that
it's innocuous; nevertheless, does that give you a clue where in the
boot is has gotten stuck?

Yeah, it blocks consistently on boot, but the ctrl + alt + del
workaround works. Don't want to take this bug off on a tangent though,
so if you want to have this focused just on the looping behaviour that's
fine by me.

[Bug 552046] Re: Lucid beta 1 won' t boot, plymouth launch broken

2010-03-31 Thread Reuben Firmin
Unavailable meaning that the keys don't work - it stays on the same
terminal.

Nomodeset made no difference - I'd tried that while initially debugging.

Without quiet and splash, I see init-bottom run, and then the udev disk
output as described in 552088. After that there's no more output. The
terminal responds to shift page up / page down, and the alt sysrq keys.
I've left it at that state for 90 minutes to see if it was temporarily
blocked on something, but without any difference.

If I run with init=/bin/bash, I see the same output, and then get a bash
prompt as expected.

Are you looking for anything in particular? I can't capture what's
logged (AFAIK) but I can hunt through the log messages if you like.

[Bug 552088] [NEW] Lucid beta 1 - will not boot

2010-03-30 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:

I upgraded using update manager from 9.10 on my spare desktop, to see if Lucid
worked.

Unfortunately it doesn't - it freezes at boot.

I've tried all three kernels available, and they all freeze at the same
point - after my disks are initialized (I presume from the console after
udev has done its thing) during init-bottom. The last lines I see are:

sd 8:0:0:[0-4] [sdN] Attached SCSI removable disk

I have a RAID card in my PC attached to one of the hard drives. Thinking
that this was the culprit, I removed the card...but the issue still
occurs.

I've tried grub with noapic and noacpi in various combinations, but that
doesn't help. Using init=/bin/bash got me to a shell, at which point I
could start X (albeit without mouse and keyboard), and dhclient. The
first (root) hard drive is present and mounted; the others are all in
/dev/disk/by-uuid as I expected, but not mounted.

Let me know what you need to debug this, and I'll grab it. It'll be hard
to post logs without getting X up with the peripherals working, so if
you have a hint for that, let me know.

Aha, never mind then. :)

It might be good to gray them out in the build menu or similar.

[Bug 534198] [NEW] Cobra chassis tanks don't show up in build menu

2010-03-07 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: warzone2100

This is an annoying bug - I'd gotten near the end of a mission where I
needed some beefier tanks. My research developed cobra chassis, and I
designed a few variations. They show up in design view, but when I
switch to build view they're not there. Viper chassis tanks show up just
fine.

[Bug 517794] Re: Cannot click on anything when logging into Gnome the first time

2010-02-24 Thread Reuben Firmin
This happened again, and I was able to get some info from a different
TTY.

Here's the relevant part from /var/log/messages - compiz crashes.

Feb 24 13:17:06 fridge kernel: [349959.691938] compiz.real[22928]:
segfault at 5 ip 08055c3c sp bfc0a410 error 4 in
compiz.real[8048000+34000]

This bug is actually intermittent - it does not always happen on first
login after all. Zapping X sometimes causes it; first login sometimes
works fine. Last time that this happened, ctrl alt bksp was not enough
to recover from it; I had to completely reboot the machine. I didn't
capture Xorg.log from that startup, but my current one is attached.

[Bug 517794] Re: Cannot click on anything when logging into Gnome the first time

2010-02-24 Thread Reuben Firmin
Ah, I grabbed the wrong thing from /var/log/messages. I zapped X again
and hit the problem. This time, there was no message about compiz
crashing; instead the only message was:

Feb 24 15:18:30 fridge bonobo-activation-server (reubenf-9075): could
not associate with desktop session: Failed to connect to socket /tmp
/dbus-21KoScej9t: Connection refused

So I looked back to the earlier occasion on which I got stuck, and sure
enough:

Feb 24 13:17:42 fridge bonobo-activation-server (reubenf-23344): could
not associate with desktop session: Failed to connect to socket /tmp
/dbus-bSazBlS28S: Connection refused

So, this seems to be the cause. FWIW this time I was able to zap X a
couple of times and get a session that is responsive; I wonder if I
couldn't earlier because of the dead compiz on top of the bonobo issue.

Xorg from bonobo-detached X attached.

[Bug 524954] [NEW] Cannot print an image to multiple pages

2010-02-20 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:

See attached screenshot showing Gimp's image resolution dialog,
correctly recognizing page size, and gnome's default print dialog, which
does not allow sizing of images to multiple pages.

There is no obvious way in ubuntu to print a large image across multiple

lp directly, but that didn't print anything (the document was stuck as
processing for 10 minutes.)

[Bug 517794] [NEW] Cannot click on anything when logging into Gnome the first time

2010-02-05 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-session

After booting my computer, when first logging into Gnome, nothing
reponds to left or right click events. The GDM login screen _does_
respond to the mouse, so it's only once I'm logged in that the bug
happens. The cursor is visible onscreen and moves around.

When I restart X (ctrl alt backspace) and re-login, the mouse works
normally.

[Bug 516644] Re: Choppy Audio From Wine, VirtualBox when Using Simultaneous Output

2010-02-04 Thread Reuben Firmin
Thanks for the prompt reply David.

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10.

Your suspicion was correct - VirtualBox was indeed using ALSA. I thought
that the ability to output to multiple soundcards simultaneously was one
of the key benefits of the PulseAudio layer, am I wrong? And, further,
that ALSA cannot output to multiple cards simultaneously, at least
without a good deal of fiddling with asoundrc? If those assumptions are
correct, then the bug would appear to be in Gnome - i.e. that the
output to both devices option (system/preferences/sound/output) should
not be applied to applications that bypass PulseAudio and use ALSA
directly.

Wine is also using ALSA, as I guess you inferred (I did try out the
patched wine to allow it to output to pulseaudio, but reverted to
mainline a while back.)

[Bug 516644] [NEW] Choppy Audio From Wine, VirtualBox when Using Simultaneous Output

2010-02-03 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Simultaneous output works fine from Gnome/Ubuntu. However, apps running
under Wine or VirtualBox have poor performance and choppy/laggy sound
when simultaneous is the preferred output.

I've verified that output to either one of the cards independently works
fine - it's just the simultaneous option which introduces the bug.

[Bug 515587] [NEW] abcde should not write over unknown folder

2010-02-01 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: abcde

When abcde cannot identify the artist / album, the default name assigned
to the output folder is Unknown_Artist-Unknown_Album.

If abcde is being called from a script to rip many CDs at once, every
time a CD cannot be identified, the Unknown_Artist-Unknown_Album folder
is overwritten. It _does_ make sense to overwrite identified albums
(perhaps the user is re-ripping with a different codec, or similar), but
given that many albums may be unknown, abcde should have a special
case that takes care of this logic.

I suggest that the folders be named sequentially, e.g. Unknown_Artist-
Unknown_Album_1, Unknown_Artist-Unknown_Album_2, etc.

Thanks

[Bug 464308] Re: Firefox video choppy

2010-01-20 Thread Reuben Firmin
Actually let me amend that. Based on a recommendation in a reddit thread
on this same problem, I tried out chrome - no choppy video on vimeo.
Switch back to firefox; choppiness. So this does not appear to be a
flash plugin issue per se; at least, Firefox is somehow implicated(?)

[Bug 503455] Re: Digikam slow to scan camera (regression)

2010-01-06 Thread Reuben Firmin
It's 10 times slower, easily, when scanning the camera for images. I
plug in the camera, digikam pops up, opens the camera import dialog, and
then just sits there for 20 seconds before even rendering thumbnails.
Each thumbnail from that point on takes maybe 1s to render. Previously,
this was extremely fast.

[Bug 503453] [NEW] Digikam tries to initialize phonon when run from Gnome

2010-01-05 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: digikam

I use Gnome, but I find digikam to be the best photo management
software. When I start digikam, I get a notification popup saying that
Phonon could not be initialized properly. Digikam does not (as far as I
know) perform any sound tasks; even if it does, it should not rely on
the KDE sound layer. Shouldn't there be a generalized (freedesktop.org)
API to the sound layer that both Gnome and KDE can use?
