Short answer: i'd keep precise-proposed access enabled. Happy to help get your wife's connection sorted. I'm at university myself and new linux users often have to sink or swim with things like this: take this life jacket ;) Thanks for the quick reply, and the reassurance. Have you had similar problems connecting to the wi-fi at your university? Durham has close links with Microsoft, and the IT department only offers help for problems with Microsoft software products. Their support for Macs is minimal and grudging, there is no general help for linux except for specific help for the high performance computing facility. There is a little linux help if you are from another university and trying to access the Eduroam system. My request for help sent to the IT Help Desk has gone unanswered. I had hoped to do some gentle linux evangelizing among the unbelievers but this rather public problem has got things off to a bad start. I shall have to be patient. Barry T Well, i did have some problems at first trying to connect to the wireless network on campus, but then i had a quick look and found there's a certificate to use and after 5 minutes of messing around, i figured it out and it works wonderfully. I know - it's a bit of a mess, the current state of so called 'IT expertise' - why, just this week my friend went to see the IT department on campus about recovering some deleted files from linux and they didn't have a clue. Problem solved after using 'photorec' and 'scalpel' ourselves. It's seems like the prerequisite for being an 'IT professional' is knowing how to click a few buttons on microsoft office - everyone working on IT support should be familiar with at least 1 linux distro, really. The operating systems are free, and if you're trying to help people for a living, there will be people who use this - it costs nothing but time to learn a few commands. They think everyone uses windows and the odd (rich) person uses a mac, but the linux users are fringe rebels lol I would bet heavily that you either don't get a reply, or it isn't any use when it arrives. They're just not clued in: what you need is another linux user from the online community or nearby. I think UK universities (can't say what state other country's are in) need to expand their knowledge on linux because often times the solution is just 1 tiny command instead of a 2 page list of clicking instructions. As far as your problem goes, a bug will come to light every now and then when new code is added or old code is reviewed, and then it gets fixed. I had a look at your link to the bug on launchpad and it seems to affect the openssl package as well. Once the packages are in the repositories and you've got those repos enabled, update and upgrade and try connecting again. Keep us apprised of the details and we'll have it sorted in no time - it's usually just a case of messing around with the configurations (and it only ever gets complicated because IT departments are NEVER specific enough about the details, whereas e.g. on your own home network, you call the shots and you have access to specific settings.) Try not to get discouraged because prevailing over these tiny obstacles does pay off in the long run. Hi Barry, It looks like Durham uses eduroam. In which case, you may be able to follow the excellent (including Ubuntu specific!) instructions from Cambridge university: http://www.ucs.cam.ac.uk/wireless/eduroam/localusers I think they should apply wherever you're based. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu compatible digital voice recorder
Hi James, I use the Sony ICD-UX200 http://www.sony.co.uk/product/dic-voice-and-music-recorders/icd-ux200. I haven't come across any compatibility issues with it. It's got good sound quality and, importantly, a USB port which hides away very neatly. When plugged in you can drag and drop sound files as if it were a normal USB stick. The battery life is good and it has 2Gb of memory. It's maybe a bit more expensive than other similar devices (around £80), but it seems to do the job very well. I mainly use it for writing articles and notes. The main thing missing from it is a decent rewind button whilst recording; once it's recorded you can't re-record the last few seconds if you've made a mistake. It sounds like that wouldn't be too much a of a problem for your sort of work. For transcription I use Express scribe software: http://www.nch.com.au/scribe/index.html. There is a free linux version, but I couldn't get it to work. However the windows version works well in wine. If you find a better open source alternative please let me know! Alternatively, the voice recorder itself has a playback function where you can slow down the speed for easier transcription, or you can play the recordings in any mp3 player (but without the ability to slow it down effectively in the ones I tried). At work I've used various olympus voice recorders, which have the advantage of a better rewind to re-record function. However, as you say I'm not sure what the compatibility is like and they tend to be a lot more expensive. I've also tried a Philips voice recorder (I can't remember which one) but it was a lot more fiddly to use and didn't have the inbuilt USB or slow playback functions. All the best with your work in Ethiopia, it sounds interesting. [ubuntu-uk] Wacom bamboo and linux...
Hi All, I said I'd report back on the wacom bamboo pen and touch (model CTH-460). It's taken me a little while to get round to it, but here are a few findings. In summary, the pen works well and the touch pad doesn't. Just for the record I'm using a 64-bit version of kubuntu natty with twinview over two screens. Setting up the driver was relatively straightforward. I used the driver and instructions referred to in this howto:https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wacom/LatestDriver The pen works immediately. One slightly off-putting aspect for someone who is used to touchpads on laptops is the automatic set up is for the location to be absolute rather than relative, ie 1-to-1 mapping of each point on the touchpad to the screen, rather than the movement of the cursor starting afresh each time you move. To be honest, I've got used to it now, but you can change it via xsetwacom if you want to: http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/maverick/man1/xsetwacom.1.html The big downside is the touchpad. Apparently the recent bamboos have 4 finger support, which has messed up the touchpad settings on ubuntu. Therefore every time you lift your finger on or off the touchpad the cursor jumps about 3 inches. Not very helpful! The only place I could find this glitch mentioned is on flavux's comments here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9496609postcount=1 There doesn't seem to be a cure I can find as yet. Gimp set-up was very easy using the instructions here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wacom#Gimp Again, the pen worked straight away with pressure sensitivity as well. Slightly worryingly the ubuntu wacom page has been marked for deletion. I couldn't find a more updated version, so I'm not sure what the plan is with this. I have to admit I haven't really looked at what the buttons do yet. I'm sure they must be useful for something! Twinview set up works fine, I didn't have to do any extra configuration. My monitors are not exactly the same size, but fairly similar. So, I'd give it a 6/10 so far. It's definitely an area without much support and is certainly not plug it in and off you go. Using the pen has been surprisingly useful for some aspects of work (eg flicking through brain scans in 3-D projections using a programme called fslview - it's what I do for a living!). I would love to get the touchpad working. If I did, I'd probably get rid of the mouse, but I'm not there yet. If anyone has got the touchpad working on the most recent models, I'd love to hear about it. [Bug 687413] [NEW] Screen flicking with dual monitors in netbook remix on eeePC
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xrandr When I plug in a VGA cable to my EEE PC (1000HA - dual boot windows xp, ubuntu netbook remix) I have problems as outlined below. I've tried it on two monitors, one with partial success: 1. plugged in to 1680x1050 flatscreen monitor. Display appears with a resolution of 800x600. Changing the resolution through the monitor settings application results in both laptop and external screen flickering at about 2-3Hz and being unable to be read. Trying to separate them (xrandr --output VGA1 --left-of LVDS1 caused the same appearance as above. 2. VGA connection to (I think 800x600) projector. Both screen flicker as above at about 2-3Hz. I have disabled all the power preferences that relate to the lid functions, so it doesn't bug me, although every now and then the screen flashes off and on. Is it worth sending it back for repairs? or something i should only do if it bugs me enough? thanks --Michael [1] http://www.mgfletcher.com/pictures/eee/power_history.png -- _ Michael Fletcher Visit my website here - http://www.mgfletcher.com/blog Interested in Linux? I haven't had any issues with the lid sensor. Sounds like a problem with the hardware, so probably worth sending back for repairs. I'd like to be able to write music on the computer, and for that to then get played back to me by some midi engine. I'd like to be able to write multiple tracks and play them back ontop of each other. snip Regards, andylockran Have a look at http://ubuntustudio.org -- Philip Stubbs Hi Andy, If you want something you can write notes on try noteedit, musescore or rosegarden. I had a similar dilema having to rearrange some music a little while ago. I used noteedit which seemed to work best for me. All the programmes seem to have funny quirks and idiosyncracies. My advice is to have a go on each and see how you get on. To print sheet music from noteedit, I had to save it and print from rosegarden. Regards Ted Wager Linux user.. first step, remove anything automatix has done, it just causes problems, breaks systems and gives support people a big headache. not supported and please do not use it :) . Second step, e-mail the bbc to compain about their web service being bias towards propiatary systems when we have free formats available for them to use :) typically at the bottom of a video stream it has 'open in a standalone player' you could try copying that link into a standalone realplayer and playing from there. Thanks for the reply...I did try without Automatix several times...Automatix was a last resort.. As to the complaint to the bbc I cannot reaally do that as I have no problem on my home computer with either mplayer or realplayer..It is just on my friends box where I am having problems.. Hi, I had similar problems with realplayer in firefox running Kubuntu feisty which were resolved by installing the media player connectivity add-on to firefox. This effectively opens all media links in the programme that it is intended for. Eg, from the BBC website if I click on a newsclip it appears with an icon. If I click on the icon, it opens realplayer and plays the clip in realplayer with no problems. It might be worth a go if nothing else works. Hi everyone, I'm a recent convert to Linux (after accidentally wiping my harddrive and not wanting to put windows back on it - long story!). I'm also a doctor, so I'm really glad to see the e-mail below. I've worked a bit in Zambia and one of the challenges in the rural hospital I worked in was collecting data about patients on Anti-retrovirals to a sufficiently high standard to keep funders happy. Do people know of other low-cost similar open source health-related software?
