[Bug 51315] Re: udevd: nss_ldap: failed to bind to LDAP server

2006-11-14 Thread Guy Van Sanden
I'm using a temporary fix on Dapper
in the nscd init script, I copy nsswitch.conf.ldap before starting nscd and put
nsswitch.conf.default back when stopping.

This does not work on Edgy because nscd seems to be started before the
network is available (circular dependency).

Hi

As far as I know we aren't uploading new documents and just changing in
branches so they would be released in the next final copy, IE Feisty in

Feisty work goes on in trunk. Changing things in branches is only
appropriate if the changes are going to be uploaded to the relevant
distribution (branches/edgy - edgy, branches/dapper - dapper).

We'll discuss this on the list, I think. There is good potential for
improving our freeze handling.

[Bug 67734] Re: Mouse pointer freezes in Dell Dimension E521 / nForce 430

2006-11-14 Thread Irios
I compiled a pristine 2.16.18.2 kernel using the config file used by
Ubuntu Edgy 2.6.17 kernel; the only option I changed in the config menu
was selectin optimisation for Athlon. There were no nasty surprises
during compilation, and everything worked fine the first time.

I unplugged the USB hub and plugged my wireless mouse/keyboard combo
directly into a USB port and rebooted. My computer booted the new kernel
just fine, and unlike Edgy's 2.6.17, it reached GDM with a fully
functional mouse and keyboard, which was already an improvement on the
previous situation (reaching GDM with BOTH already locked).

The system has ran for a whole day, and I have been using it for about
three hours with no mouse or keyboard lockups happening.

What I don't know is what functionality have I given up by not running
Ubuntu's kernel. What patches have they added to 2.6.17 that are absent
from 2.6.18.2?

Unfortunately not everything works OK off the bat:

* NTFS-3g works OK (an advantage of user-mode drivers).

* ALSA does not work, and sound is output via the OSS driver, so
there is no mixer and only one app can use sound at any one time.

* The nVidia proprietary driver needs to be recompiled (which I have
not done yet) and for some reason the open-source nvidia driver does not
go further than 1024x768.

* The built-in ethernet works fine, but my Ralink PCI wifi card does
not.

* The system activity monitor reports only one processor (just like
with Edgy's 2.6.17, actually), so I think the system is half as fast as
it could be.

More testing is really necessary, but right now it seems as though the
kernel hackers have done their job and the problem is fixed upstream.
Now the ball is in Ubuntu's court, and the fixes should be identified
and backported to Edgy's and Dapper's kernels. I would be willing to
help if I only knew where to start.

By the way, is there anybody listening to this thread beyond the
damnified?

[Bug 41091] Re: Ubuntu crash when connecting to port replicator (Dell Latitude D610)

2006-11-14 Thread Arno
Same here with a Sony SZ160 and its dock station on Ubuntu Edgy, kernel
2.6.17-10-generic... The laptop freezes every time I undock it. Nothing can
unfreeze it except a 'hard reboot' (long press on the start button).
Is there anything I can try to run or gather to help someone figure this out?

Just for your information, I had the exact same problem with the same
laptop on Dapper but it went away 'magically' one day after a kernel
update... (don't ask me which one ;)

[Bug 67734] Re: Mouse pointer freezes in Dell Dimension E521 / nForce 430

2006-11-14 Thread daniel
I'm listening... but I guess I am damned too... though it seems to a
lesser extent.

For the record I am on a brand new Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe WIFI
motherboard (nForce 590 chipset), and am experiencing this problem. I am
using a MSFT Intellimouse Explorer 4.0 mouse (wired) on USB. For me,
the problem occurs when i leave the mouse alone for an extended amount
of time (greater than 5 minutes). If I am even only casually using the
mouse (at least once every couple of minutes, such as reading blogs or
articles), there are no problems. I have not yet experienced a
mouse/pointer lockup while using it. Also, using a USB-to-PS/2 converter
does not alleviate the problem at all.

At this time I'm a bit too new to Linux to start compiling new kernels
(too afraid), as I'm having enough of a problem getting [*certain*]
video and audio codecs to install. When I get the chance, though, I
will try to replicate the problem on some different distributions (at
the moment I have Knoppix and CentOS laying around), taking note of
kernel version (uname -r, right?)

[Bug 71746] patch for compression type priority (gz, bz2, possibly others)

2006-11-14 Thread Jyrki Muukkonen
Public bug reported:

The current apt version defaults to {Packages,Sources,Whatever}.bz2 and
fallbacks to .gz. The .bz2 files are around 20% smaller than .gz files, but
uncompression takes about five times longer. That's something you don't want
on slow machines with fast network connections.

This little patch adds Acquire::CompressionTypes configuration list to define
the compression extension order. Also, this patch makes any future compression
formats a little bit easier to implement.

Tagging this beast with worksforme and experimental. Also, my C++ is a
little bit rusty. It might make your system unusable or send froobazillions of
requests to .deb mirror you're using.

Sample apt.conf:

Acquire::CompressionTypes {
.gz;
.bz2;
}

A patch against upstream 0.6.46.3 can be found at
https://no.spoon.fi/~jvtm/patches/apt/apt-compression-
priority-0.6.46.3_001.patch

Debug::Acquire::http is quite helpful when testing this.

Using this on Edgy/amd64 and after the compilation finishes on
Etch/ixp4xx (NSLU2).

Not sure if this qualifies as a bug report, but didn't find any
feature request / implementation posting. I'm also too lazy to create a
Debian specific bugzilla/whatever account.

RE: [Bug 48806] Re: vfat filesystems checked by fsck

2006-11-14 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The only way to fix the problem by users is:
1. Boot Knoppix Live CD and manually edit Ubuntu/Kubuntu the /etc/fstab
file.
For each FAT entry in fstab, replace '1' in column 6 with a '0'

2. Save the modified fstab*

Then Kubuntu/Ubuntu no longer checks FAT32 partions and does not destroy
them!

An easy fix by the developers is to create a sed script that replaces '1' in
col 6 of fstab with a '0' for all FAT entries in the fstab. They should have
also provided a patch for the affected versions of Ubuntu/Kubuntu (6.10 and
6.11 since most users do not know how to edit fstab manually!

I am surprised that the developers still has not fixed the bug.

[Bug 61381] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashes at login

2006-11-14 Thread Markus Olausson
gnome-settings-daemon starts if I set permissions on /etc/libnss-
ldap.conf to 644. It was, and should be, 600 becuase it contains
credentials. The lookups is done through nscd. But nscd randomly quits,
see bug #57214 and remote bug http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-

This also breaks gnome-screensaver(can't unlock) and kate(file protocol

Also others users have this problem, but I don't know why this happen...

However this bug seems not to be a bug in Kubuntu translation for Edgy,

 imported in Kubuntu.

[Bug 71748] can't join non-DHCP WLANs, no fallback to zeroconf addressing

2006-11-14 Thread netztier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Since upgrading to Ubuntu 6.10, NetworkManager does no longer fallback
to zerconf addressing (self-assigned IP addressing from the
169.254.0.0/16 range, as per RFC3330 and RFC3927) for the WLAN NIC. This
although package zeroconf is installed and it's script is in
/etc/network/if-up.d.

Zeroconf actually works for eth1 (which is the onboard nic with module
tg3) on my laptop: when I plug it into a non-DHCP LAN, syslog shows how
DHCP fails and then a RFC3927 address is being assigned.

With ath0 (madwifi-ng), syslog output looks the similar upt to the point
where the DHCP-DISCOVER messages aren't answered. If there's other WLAN
SSIDs in the air, another one from the list is picked an joined. If no
other WLANs are detected, ath0 is deactivated - although it had joined
the DHCP-less WLAN successfully. The WLAN Access Point [Cisco Aironet
1231-G, IOS 12.2(8)JA] shows a fully associated WLAN client.

What is the reasoning behind deactivating the WLAN NIC after a
successful join but a failed attempt at getting an address via DHCP? Why
is there no fallback to zeroconf (if it is installed)?

After all, in 6.06, this did work, and I made use of it extensively to
work around the no static IP adressing limitation of NetworkManager.

regards

Marc

[Bug 71554] Re: resolv.conf has wrong entry

2006-11-14 Thread Stéphane Graber
Can you describe exactly what you did to have this problem ?
Do you have all your settings set by DHCP, what kind of installation did you
use (livecd or alternate).
If DHCP, did the installer detected it correctly or did you have to set them
manually ?

[Bug 68084] Re: Nautilus CD Burner does not enable joliet extensions when burning to DVD

2006-11-14 Thread TiagoCruz
I'm has this problem too, and this patch has been solved my problem very
well, but I need to do one little workaround to make possible this use
on my dapper.

Normal users can expect this patch on dapper (downgrade nautilus 2.17.1
- 2.14.3)? to get this bugfix using apt/synaptic? :-)

PS: Saying on Windows compatibility, I have this problem too:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=374922

Maybe some ubuntu guys can confirm this problem, and work together on
one solution :D

Many thanks!

[Bug 25105] Re: incorrect test page printing with SAMSUNG ML1210 (on breezy)

2006-11-14 Thread Rami Autiomäki
Here Kubuntu Edgy, Samsung ML-1510
tested also in Kubuntu Dapper

Cups test page prints fine, but pictures print out corrupted. With Samsung
closed source driver even large pictures print fine.
There seems to be some other glitch in Samsung PPD that makes test page to
print too left and too up when printing in A4-size. So cups test page is
missing left and top border. Closed source driver prints test page centered.
I fixed this with alignmargins tool, but it would be nice if this was fixed in
PPD.

[Bug 14172] Re: hoary: Time sees every argument as a program to run.

2006-11-14 Thread Adam Buchbinder
time is *not* working as documented. This has been reported twice here
on Launchpad and at least once on Debian.

Here's how I got bitten by the bug:

1. I've used time ./program to time single runs before. I wanted to get
memory usage information this time.
2. I executed man time to find out about its options.
3. I ran time in accordance with those options. It then gave me a confusing
error message, and I was about to file a bug when I found this report and
understood what was going on. (The memory usage options don't work anyway, but
that's not really the point.)

Where did I go wrong? I'm not the only person to have been bitten by
this, so there's clearly something wrong. Whether the man page should be
for the bash builtin, or some other solution, the current situation is
unintuitive, if not flat-out misleading, and this report will keep
getting duplicated because users will go through the same steps that I
did and end up scratching their heads in the same way that I did.

[Bug 71762] No easy way to enable Burn Proof feature of drive

2006-11-14 Thread Nick Booker
Public bug reported:

Currently, the only way to enable the Burn Proof key in gconf is to edit the
gconf database manually using gconf-editor or gconftool.
As a result, a user may find it difficult to enable the feature, or not even

There should be a checkbox in the Write to Disc dialog allowing the user
to enable it, or if the UI really must hide the option, burnproof should

[Bug 63418] Re: CPU soft lockup during bootup

2006-11-14 Thread Dr D J Clark
The thermal sensor on the wireless card is needed to ensure the wireless
operates at the correct frequency. If the wireless is switched off then
obviously it does not matter.
I assume the patch breaks a loop in which the system is held until the thermal
sensor indicates that the wireless has 'warmed up' and calibrated.
The patch thus fixes the proximate cause of the lock-up problem but is no more
than a patch for a more fundamental problem; if the wireless is switched off
the system should not be attempting to load and set up wireless at all. (though
this does raise the problem of how this should be done if the wireless is
switched on after boot has completed.)

[Bug 54246] Re: DMRAID stopped to work in kernels 2.6.15

2006-11-14 Thread Phillip Susi
Disregard my modified packages. It seems that it is not as simple as I
thought to move the devices out of /dev/mapper. I spent a few hours
trying to debug it last night and I concluded that it will take a lot
more work to make this happen, so I won't bother.

Based on my IRC discussions with Richard Bailey, it sounds like in
addition to the boot time lvm script, the installer incorrectly
recognizes the dmraid evices as LVM volumes, and takes inappropriate
action with them that prevents installation from continuing. I think a
bug should be filed against the installer for this reason.
