[Bug 175689] Re: Share Folder in right-click menu does not share ntfs drive folders

2008-04-20 Thread mnemo
I went through the upgrade to hardy process a little over a week ago
and I run into a serious problem which is very much related to this.

I basically have two 500GB USB harddrives formatted as NTFS connect to
my Ubuntu machine. On these drives I have over 20 different SMB shares
each and the upgrade process automatically DELETED ALL MY SHARES WITH NO
WARNING WHAT SO EVER AND WITH NO CHANCE OF RECOVERY. This caused a some
serious downtime problems for me. On top of that, once I got hardy up
and running I could not even fix these problems because hardy will, as
the bug explains, not let you share files owned by root due to the
usershare owner only = False flag being default in Ubuntu. Imagine all
the people that are running small servers with NTFS partitions like I
do. This is not a nice experience for them during upgrade.

The bug that I filed about the broken upgrade process was closed as a duplicate
of this bug (even though they are in fact slightly different).
Please have a look at my original bug report here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/214714

Sharing folders on NTFS drives is an important use case and it worked
perfectly in previous versions of Ubuntu (so this is a regression and
people are very unforgiving about regressions). I'd very much give my
vote to fixing this before (or soon after) the hardy release.

[Bug 219922] [NEW] Firefox 3 prints a letter-sized paged even when asked to print A4

2008-04-20 Thread Fernand Pajot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mozilla-firefox

I have a4 in /etc/papersize and also in my HP Deskjet 952C settings (using
hpjis drivers). Locale settings an EN_GB UTF8.
When I print a page in Firefox on an A4 paper, the format is wrong (as if the
printer was trying to print on a US-Letter sized page).

[Bug 219895] Re: Folder sharing does not provide an NFS option.

2008-04-20 Thread DavidBaucum
I think I should clarify something. When you initially go to share a
folder a prompt comes up to install SAMBA. This is probably sufficient
for most people, as most are operating in a *nix/Windows environment.
In Gutsy you could choose SMB or NFS. In Hardy you are only given the
SMB option. The omission of NFS may be intentional, but I think having
the option in the GUI for NFS would be preferable.

[Bug 137519] Re: sshfs: please update to latest version (1.6 - 1.8)

2008-04-20 Thread LimCore
For MOTU team:
I know it is very late in release cycle,
but this bug is known for half-year, and it is important - crashing, possible
loss of data.

The 1.9 upstream version includes the needed bug fixes.

Unless it will be used, all Ubuntu users for next months that try to use sshfs
will experience segfaults, possibly when doing backups (common use
according to bug report here).

Since current version is already broken, upgrading to bug-fixed version
probably can only make things better.

[Bug 219924] [NEW] Hardy network places cannot display certain Windows shares

2008-04-20 Thread Paul Pieroni
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Ubuntu 8.04 beta 20/04/08. Nautilus 2.22.2. Stand-alone Ubuntu machine
amidst an W2K ADS. To reproduce - Open 'Network' from 'Places' menu.
Navigate through 'Windows Network' - 'DomainController' - We are
prompted for user/password at this point so all ok so far. List of
shares on the machine is shown but some cannot be accessed. Whn you try
to open them the error message is 'The folder contents could not be
displayed' and 'Invalid Argument'. This appears to happen if folder has
a large number of sub-directories and files. I tried with KDE4 and
Dolphin gives a 'Folder does not exist' error when one tries to open any
of the problem folders.

If you give green lights I would attach the necessary files.
In fact it's a sync so there shouldn't be a lot problems.
Just two points:
1) I can't give it a deeper testing since I have a lack of time and a lack of
knowledge
2) I just would provide the necessary files and won't be the bug contact
because of new upstream(So think about you green lights :)) ;)

Hi,

I'll try and rebuild and test that version in hardy tomorrow.

Note that I haven't experienced problems with the current version,
so if someone that does have problems could also do that
it would be much better.

Thanks,

[Bug 206068] Re: [Hardy] lockup on HP Compaq NC4000

2008-04-20 Thread Ian
Part of the problem is that when it happens, any useful info in dmesg is
lost when the write isn't committed - see the log for lots of orphaned
bits of the disk being recovered.

It will stay happily at the login prompt forever, but crashes about five
minutes into a session using the wireless card... sometimes.

[Bug 190095] Re: Laptop hibernate correctly, but reboot instead shutdown

I've got this issue as well. Before the thing reboots, I get some error

cpufreq: resume failed to assert current frequency is what timing core thinks

I've tried adding all the cpufreq related modules to the list to
remove/reload in /etc/default/acpi-support, as well as messed around
with a variety of options (laptop_mode, disable_dma, hibernate_mode),
but nothing seems to do the trick.

My system is a Sharp TN10W, Intel Banias 1.1 Ghz processor, Intel i810
graphics, no desktop effects. Hibernation used to work fine in Gutsy,
although the fan would always spin up full speed right when the computer
shut down.

[Bug 219931] [NEW] Japanese font switching issue

2008-04-20 Thread rogmorri
Public bug reported:

Actually, there are two separate issues, See attached screen shot.

Firstly, as I'm entering Japanese text (into Nautilus, or Firefox, or
wherever), when I type Japanese hiragana characters it seems to switch
to one font, then when I type Japanese kanji characters, it seems to
switch to another. From a brief inspection, it seems that all the
installed fonts either contain no Japanese characters, or contain both
hiragana and kanji characters. So, why is it switching between fonts
like that?

Secondly, the default font seems to vertically center the Japanese comma
and period characters. What's up with that? I'm not a Japanese expert,
but I think this is as abnormal in Japanese as centering a comma or
period in English text would be.

When combined, the above two issues are especially annoying. The comma
character moves up and down in the same sentence, depending on what
character was before it.

Actually, as I type this, I realize why a font would have a vertically-
centered comma and period like that -- this would be appropriate for
vertical text. So perhaps the question is, why is a vertical font being
selected or why does the font engine thing I'm typing vertically?

For reference, here is the text from the attached screen shot...
AAA、。あああ、。曲、。あ、。
(The comma and period are u3001 and 3002, the hiragana character is u3042, and
the kanji is u66f2)

Ubuntu 8.04 beta, no compiz, Japanese language installed and default
font size set to 12, but otherwise everything is pretty-much as one
would get from a fresh install. (The same issues are seen when font
size is 10, the default). I've only tried this under gnome.

[Bug 214119] Re: [HARDY] Koolu W.E. (ION A603) does not detect higher resolution than 800x600

2008-04-20 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
With the help of Mart Raudsepp from Gentoo, we have backported the
libDDC patch to AMD 2.7.7.7 and called the result 2.7.7.8-0ubuntu1.

This one gets correctly detected inside LTSP too.

Test packages are in my PPA. Just install them in the chroot (making
sure to purge -amd and -geode first), then exit and run ltsp-update-
image to test this.

My guess is that something in X server core prevents automatic
detection, possibly a list of known drivers from which X won't deviate.

[Bug 206921] Re: MacBook brightness adjustment does not work in Hardy

2008-04-20 Thread Steffen Röcker
Ok, we know that pommed works. addon-macbook-backlight in hal doesn't work.
Thats strange, because pommed code and hal code are basically the same for
adjusting the Macbook brightness.
The introduction of PolicyKit/ConsoleKit broke that part of code in hal.

I've run hal with more debug information (see attached patch) and got:
[E] addon-macbook-backlight.c:145: failed to mmap: errno:
'Success'

** ERROR **: failed to gain access to the video card
aborting...

I have no idea why this mmap fails.

[Bug 135752] Re: Language support not enabled for the installation language

2008-04-20 Thread Timo Jyrinki
I checked this with hardy, no different: Installed with Internet
connection not enabled.

1. After booting to the installed system, Internet connection enabled,
Language Selector lists English as the only possible language in the
upper part of the windows, and selected. However, Finnish (suomi) is
selected as the default language in the bottom part of the window, but
the program does not have a choice to actually download support for the
default language.

2. After manually refreshing software sources in Update Manager
(something that will be eventually done automatically too, in case
Internet connection is enabled), the language list is complete but the
tool does still not suggest enabling support for the language that is
selected as the default. One must manually scroll the language list
and select the language support for there.

So, one issue is suggesting the downloading of language support for the
default language, and another issue is how to handle the case where
software sources have not yet been refreshed.

I used 20080419 daily-live which has language-selector 0.3.4 that should
have some new note about this issue, but I didn't notice any notice
during installation or after booting into the new system (there might
have been one during installation since I didn't pay attention, if it
disappeared before the end's reboot suggestion dialog is showed).

[Bug 219932] [NEW] Page number field shows the text Page number instead of a decimal number

2008-04-20 Thread Javier Amigo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

With Ubuntu Gutsy, I try to insert the page number on a blank document, in the
footer. Then, a text is displayed in Spanish (I'm using Spanish as my language)
which means Page number in English, but in fact, just the text is displayed,
not the number.
The same happens when inserting a Page count, but this time appears
Statistics. And also happens for the time, and so.
What's wrong with OOo??

2008-04-20 Thread Ralph Janke
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be
reproducible with the development release - Hardy Heron. I have tried to
reproduce it, and it seems to be fixed.

It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on
getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more
about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .

Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

[Bug 219942] [NEW] firefox-themes-ubuntu package should be renamed to avoid user confusion

2008-04-20 Thread Christian Niemeyer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-themes-ubuntu

Surely this is not an important issue, but in ubuntu 8.04 the package
called firefox-themes-ubuntu should be renamend to something like
firefox-2-themes-ubuntu. It is confusing for new unexperienced users
and could lead to dependency problems. It would be more consistent, also
like all other packages are seperated to something like firefox-2...
and firefox-3.0...

Example:
An unexperienced user browses packages in Synaptic to find something
interesting. firefox-themes-ubuntu sounds cool, so the user wants to install
it; not paying attention that also firefox-2 from universe is going to be
installed. Then he wonders, where the themes are or accidently starts surfing
the web with firefox-2 instead of the standard firefox-3.0

Mhm this is really not a big deal, though it would be nice, if the
package could be renamed, would be more user-friendly and less
confusing.

[Bug 219243] Re: Long delay when Loading Hardware Drivers

2008-04-20 Thread enigma_0Z
After some more research, I can confirm that this is a udev bug, or at
least strongly related to udev...

The script responsible for Loading hardware drivers is
/etc/init.d/udev... And the lines it hangs on begins at line 61. The
command udevadm trigger is what causes the long wait.

--snip--
log_begin_msg Loading hardware drivers...
/sbin/udevadm trigger
if /sbin/udevadm settle; then
log_end_msg 0
else
log_end_msg $?
fi
--snip--

Changing those lines to:

--snip--
log_begin_msg Loading hardware drivers...
/sbin/udevadm trigger
log_end_msg 0
#if /sbin/udevadm settle; then
#log_end_msg 0
#else
#log_end_msg $?
#fi
--snip--

Alleviates the problem and reduces boot time by approx. 90 seconds (60
seconds vs. 150 seconds) But, is backgrounding this and letting the
other scripts run wise? AFAIK, the only modules autoloaded on my system
are iwl3945, agpgart, nvidia, and usb-storage and some others... and
agpgart and nvidia are loaded before X starts (they are the first to be
loaded)...

2008-04-20 Thread Andrew Stromme
I'm not sure if this is exactly what you meant by a backtrace, but here we
go.

I was able to follow the instructions when logged in remotely, so yay!

I did the following:

Logged into a gnome session.
Started gdb and attached it to my running Xorg process
continued the thread (cont)
rotated the screen with 'xrandr -o left'
At this point my mouse can move around the screen (still being updated) and
I can 'interact' with windows. However, nothing changes on my screen (except
for that mouse) and I do not see any of my windows moving for example if I
drag them around the screen.
I do a ctrl-c in gdb, then running backtrace full
This is the result: (the SIGINT is my ctrl-c I think)

I hope this helps. Interestingly, I tested with an external monitor (17
inch, 1280x1024) and had the exact same thing happen. So I feel that this
has to somehow be related to how the driver handles composite mode. (or the
card itself, but that seems more unlikely)

[Bug 219944] [NEW] required packages are not installed by default as they become available

2008-04-20 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Public bug reported:

People like me that have removed ubuntu-minimal (because it is not so
minimal) can easily be left with an unbootable system (yes, it just
happened to me). I am not aware of the details but I think ubuntu has
moved from sysvinit to upstart and friends. While sysvinit was removed,
upstart was not installed because it was not being pulled in via ubuntu-
minimal. The result was an unbootable system. Since this was a remote
system, I had to start from scratch.

[Bug 175689] Re: Share Folder in right-click menu does not share ntfs drive folders

2008-04-20 Thread Raptor45
I marked your bug as a duplicate because the root issue seemed the same.
If this was in error I apologize.

I certainly agree that there needs to be a warning on upgrade that
shares may be lost. It may be too late to fix the actual regression
before Hardy's release, but there really should be a warning so people
don't run into this blindly.

Adding usershare owner only = False did not work for me; perhaps I did
it incorrectly.

[Bug 219946] [NEW] BETA 8.04 install error from (windows) NTFS compressed drive

2008-04-20 Thread Marius
Public bug reported:

hello,
i am testing the beta 8.04 ubuntu desktop amd64 version on a dell laptop
inspirion
i tried to installing ubuntu from windows vista, it worked well until i had to
reboot from vista to ubuntu 8.04
whilst seeing the final steps for instalation on the ubuntu desktop, i got an
error message for the swap partition file,
and then appeared the partitioning guide which freezed for more 30 min...

i solved the problem while disabling NTFS compress drive option in windows
vista C: Properties
and then the ubuntu installation finished well and both system are now working
fine
but it does bother me to have my c:\vista partition uncompressed,
because i do not use a HDD but a SSD (solid state drive) where every GB counts
since it only has 16GB
and i lost 4GB for decompressing the drive and now there remains only 1.2 GB
free on the drive :(

[Bug 139383] Re: Kernel panic copying files from SMB share via wireless LAN

2008-04-20 Thread Alex Schiller
I am experiencing a similar problem to Colin's, though it seems to be
more severe: viewing a directory mounted with CIFS in Nautilus produces
a kernel panic within ~30 seconds (caps and num lock flashing). There
is no problem with listing directory contents or copying files through
the console.

$ uname -a

I am on a Dell D630 Laptop with Gutsy 7.10. I will test this behavior
when Hardy is released in several days.

[Bug 219950] [NEW] Font size on login screen is too big with nvidia-glx-new

2008-04-20 Thread Veichtlbauer
Public bug reported:

The following happens on a Dell D830 laptop with the nVidia Quadro 140:

After installing Hardy Release candidate, the login screen fonts for
entering the username and password looks fine. Then, I downloaded the
nvidia-glx-new package to make use of accelerated 3D. After rebooting
the machine, the font in the password box is extremely big. At first,
this seemed to be a duplicate of some other bugs reported here, but
changing the xorg.conf did not actually help the problem. After
reverting to the nv drivers and reconfiguring X, everything was back to
normal.

Maybe it is worth mentioning the system 15 screen has a resolution of
1680x1050, so its probably related to the high DPI?

Hardy had all updates applied as of the time of writing.
