[Bug 290171] [NEW] laptop freeze with ubuntu-8.10-rc-desktop-i386.iso

2008-10-28 Thread Hein van Dam
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.04 works fine on my laptop after some adjusting of the xorg.conf.
System Packard Bell with 1024x768 display and VIA/S3G UniChrome IGP

Upgrading to 8.10 failed several times and I waited for the CD release
in the hope these problems would be solved (I had enough troubles
getting my ATI card on the desktop working).

The CD works on a nvidia computer, so no faulty CD.

N.B. Previous ubuntu versions (6.10, 7.04 and 7.10) were problematic on
my laptop also because of video problems and effectively useless.

This package installs on Hardy as well. You have to install it manually though.

[Bug 290172] [NEW] KUser gives no provision to select users

2008-10-28 Thread Sayak Banerjee
Public bug reported:

A user cannot be simply selected using kuser. ie. when clicked on it,
it opens the properties for the user. If one intends to select multiple
users, Ctrl+Click would open the properties window each time and on has

selected.

[Bug 290121] Re: Microphones are always muted (Ubuntu 8.10)

2008-10-28 Thread Patrick Balleux
** Description changed:

  In Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex...

Open Volume Control, the microphones (all inputs) are always muted.

  - Open Volume control
  - Select Recording tab
  - All inputs are muted
  - Unmute microphone/input
  - Close Volume control
  - Re-open, and microphone/inputs are still muted

It seems to record anyway with some software like Sound Recorder but
using Flash, there is no sound capture at all. This is happening on a
  Dell 1521 AMD64 (HDA-Intel card) and a Averatec 3200 32bits (VIA card).

Note: The Averactec was upgraded to 8.10 several days ago... I managed
to record audio in Flash 10 by removing Pulseaudio. The I upgraded my
Dell laptop 2 days ago and no succes on this one. So to compare, I went
back to my Averatec, validated the sound capture was working in Flash,
reinstalled Pulseaudio and updated at the same time. Now I have no
sound capture in Flash on the Averatec and the microphone cannot be
  unmuted like the Dell.

I did remove Pulseaudio on both computer, rebooted, configure my default
sound to pulseaudio/alsa, played with .asoundrc and .asound.conf...
  nothing worked.

It seems that Flash is considering the muted flag and it is not
impossible to broadcast thru Flash Player (blogTV, UStream).

Since it was working on my Averatec before the major update, and it does
not work after the update, whatever I do, it looks like something is
  broken in the alsa layer.

I've looked in my logs, nothing is showing up beside this with
  Pulseaudio on my Dell...

  Oct 27 20:47:36 mult-pballeux pulseaudio[8297]: pid.c: Stale PID file,
overwriting.

setrlimit(RLIMIT_RTPRIO, (9, 9)) failed: Opération non permise

(Operation non permise = Operation Denied)
+
+ EDIT: I discovered that the Volume Control (gnome applet) shows that
+ the microphones/inputs are muted, but by monitoring with pulseaudio
+ meter and an external microphone, they were not. The first click
+ unmute the microphone (actually does nothing and the icon show
+ unmuted) and the second click will actually mute the mic/input
+ (validated with the Monitor of pulseaudio). But the status is always
+ shown as muted when reloading the volume control...
+
+ The Flash player not able to record sound could be a different issue. I
+ found out that instead of using the pulse plugin, it is using the
+ Alsa plugin to connect to the pulseaudio server. So Flash is always
+ trying to record using the Alsa libraries. With or without pulseaudio
+ (ie only with Alsa), Flash 10 (in i386 or AMD64) is not able to record
+ any sound. This state was validated on two different sound card/laptop
+ (via and hda-intel).
+
+ Note: On the i386 (Averatec) I was able to have the Flash player output
+ sound directly to the pulseaudio server without using the ALSA plugin,
+ but the recording was still with the Alsa plugin and not working. I was
+ unable to do the same on the DELL (AMD64)
+
+ I'll wait for status on this bug before reporting the Flash problem in
+ case that the two problems are related.

Re: [Bug 288662] Re: Incompatible Restricted drivers offered for Legacy Nvidia Cards

Alex Stansfield [2008-10-28 6:25 -]:
Is there going to be a more indepth warning to those using legacy
chipsets about the problems involved with upgrading to Intrepid?

Yes, update-manager will tell you about the problem if your card only
works with the legacy drivers (which aren't working in intrepid). If
you still choose to upgrade, it will transition your X.org to nv.

I'm now having to decide between buying a new graphics card or moving
 back to hardy.

That's unfortunately what it comes down to, unless you can get along
with the nv driver. At least hardy is an LTS, so it will be supported
on the desktop for another 2.5 years.

[Bug 276929] Re: Nautilus creates unlimited number of untitledX folders on WebDAV

No, I haven't sent this bug to Gnome yet, though I don't have time to at

reinstall of Windows Server 2003 for unrelated reasons, so I will try
everything again and see if the reinstall somehow magically fixed the
problem.

[Bug 290173] [NEW] kuser cannot perform tasks on multiple users together

2008-10-28 Thread Sayak Banerjee
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdeadmin

To reproduce:
Launch kuser. Now create some users. For example, I created 4 users test1 to
test 4.
Now select all the 4 users by Ctrl+Clicking on each.
Now press the Delete user button. The delete operation will be performed on
only one of the users, which is test4 in my case. After test4 is removed, we
are left with test1 to test3 users left back and selected. We can click on
Delete again to remove test3 and so on.

This bothers me as I often have to set up many users or remove a chunk
of them. Often when the number of users are removed serially, ie, in my
case, I often remove user1 to user80 together, which becomes tiring due
to this bug.

[Bug 147540] Re: Should recommend installing imagemagick

2008-10-28 Thread Miguel Rodríguez
Sure it is. The package is still lacking a proper dependency on
imagemagick, that it needs to work correctly.

Maybe imagemagick is being pulled in a default install by another

depend on it.

[Bug 284129] Re: [intrepid] HAL installs a number of different joysticks as mice

2008-10-28 Thread Martin Pitt
Ari, thanks! There was a slightly easier patch proposed by Matthew
Garrett on the upstream list:

I'll try that, too. If that does not work for you, or you think it's
incomplete, maybe you can join the upstream discussion?

I'll try to reproduce the error after work, and attach the requested

My device uses the rt73usb driver. The error occurred, when I was
downloading a huge file via http and was surfing at the same time. But I
have to say, that I only experienced this problem twice. I have been
surfing for several hours without experiencing any problem.

[Bug 278485] Re: If Ubuntu is connected to more than one network (e.g. GSM and wireless) but only GSM has internet access, OS is unable to access internet. NM version 0.7.

2008-10-28 Thread Motin
I can confirm this behavior on two Intrepid RC machines.

I guess the reason is that the 3g connection doesn't replace the default
route upon connection. Adding an option like Replace default route upon
connection (or preferably Use this connection to access Internet
through while connected) to the network connection options and the
configuration guide would solve this issue.

Currently, the only way to gain internet access through a gsm connection in nm
is to disconnect from wired and wireless networks and then connect...
(There may be some way to accomplish this by modifying the ipv4 routes settings
for the connection, but I wouldnt even dare guess how.)

Try the following:
1. Press F11 to switch to the real Full screen
2. Press F11 again to switch to a normal maximized window
3. Switch from maximzed to normal Window
You might get a window that is larger then your screen resolution:
4. Press ALT+SPACE, select Move and move the window so that you can reach the
border
5. Resize the window so that it fits on your screen
6. Restart Firefox and hopefully everything works now

[Bug 83587] Re: HP ScanJet 5300C doesn't work

2008-10-28 Thread miguelquiros
Polo:

For me, the following command:
sudo echo -e libsane hold | dpkg --set-selections
has succeeded in putting the libsane package in hold status, so
update-notifier does not bother me any more asking me to upgrade it.
I just have to be careful when I update other packages via update-manager that
libsane, still appearing in the list, is not marked and so, it is not
unintendedly upgraded.

You can check whether libsane is or is not in hold status by the comand
dpkg -l libsane
The first letter in the last line of the reply should be an h if the package
is in fact in hold status (an i if it is not).

[Bug 290177] [NEW] NM 0.7: GSM connections won't work with PIN code protected modems - despite having supplied the correct PIN for the connection in nm-connection-editor

2008-10-28 Thread Motin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

GSM connections won't work with PIN code protected modems - despite
having supplied the correct PIN for the connection in nm-connection-
editor.

The connection attempt fails almost immediately and reverts back to the
disconnected state.

Workaround: Unlock the modem manually on boot by for instance (if your PIN code
is 1234):
sudo sh -c 'echo AT+CPIN=1234 /dev/ttyUSB0'

Then the GSM modem can connect easily.

[Bug 290176] [NEW] Mozilla add0n will not install

2008-10-28 Thread joenearns
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

I have tried every way from Sunday to get the Adobe flash player add-on
to install in Firefox 3.0.

I have tried letting the web page install it, completes fine with no
errors but the add-on is not installed. I downloaded the file in the
tar format, unpacked it and tried installing 'flasherplayer-installer'
and that will not work.

I tried installing the downloaded packages from inside firefox [with no
errors] and it still won't install.

It seems every site I go to asks for the damn player and I'm pulling my
hair.

Any suggestions or am I reporting this to the wrong people or in the
wrong place.

Thank you in advance for you assistance in this matter. Hope you can

The network manager process is running, but no applet.

no applet == you dont see the applet?
or
no applet == nm-applet process isnt running?

Thanks,

[Bug 207723] Re: Evolution will not authenticate on Exchange

2008-10-28 Thread UnSandpiper
I absolutely agree with Johnny Delay.
I'm using Ubuntu as a so called business user and it would help me convince
other colleagues who are frustrated with Vista to at least consider trying
Ubuntu as a secondary OS. (same as I did)
I'm also under pressure to start using the Exchange calendar (and I'm working
around that by using a smartphone which has a working Exchange client).

So, Exchange support is vital to us business users that choose Ubuntu
before Windows or Apple, therefore I believe that this bug is directly
related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1

2008-10-28 Thread bin-ich

Hy Kzin,

thanx for your mail.
I tryed that:

title Ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-21- Akku2
root(hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-21-generic
root=UUID=37ec896f-7649-45ed-8f45-c9af2ce1727f ro noapic acpi=force irqpoll
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-21-generic
quiet

but it is the same problen. Doesn't start and freezes if i plug out ac.
:-(

This worked:

title Ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-21-Akku
root(hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-21-generic
root=UUID=37ec896f-7649-45ed-8f45-c9af2ce1727f ro nolapic
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-21-generic
quiet

only prob is that there is just one of two cores running.

I'm going to try the 8.10 Ubuntu to see if this works better

 Thanks.
 Best regards

 Toshiba Satellite A100-LE11
 2.6.27-7-generic
 ro quiet splash
 Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.04

If you aren't on the latest, IE Hardy or Stable, you can add the following
lines to your kernel parameters to work around the bug.
 noapic acpi=force irqpoll

You can test this by pressing ESC (if needed to see the kernel list) during
boot, selecting desired kernel and pressing 'e' to edit the boot params.
Select the one that ends with splash and append the above line to it. If
it works, then edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst and append the params to the
 appropriate line.
 (should look like...)
 kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-21-generic
 root=UUID=7e4a9fd6-971f-47a5-a09c-99f567eceea9 ro quiet splash noapic
 acpi=force irqpoll

Next time the kernel is updated it will prompt you as to weather or not
you would like to keep YOUR menu.lst or the one that comes with the
package. I always choose the Package maintainer's version, and then re
 add the line.

Just a note that I was having this issue, but it now seems to be fixed
in Intrepid Ibex with 2.6.27-7 kernel. (I no longer need to append the
kernel params to suppress the message)

[Bug 290178] [NEW] pptp vpn connection drops out

2008-10-28 Thread JazzyPenguin
Public bug reported:

I use pptp vpn to connect to our office network. Under Hardy using
Network Manager (NM 0.6.6) this worked very well and was stable. Under
Intrepid NM0.7 the same connection is unstable. While it connects
without a problem and i can initiate Remote Desktop Protocols etc...
eventually the connection drops out with the error VPN connection
failed. I can usually reconnect immediately, but not always, if not a
restart is usually required. Reconnected VPN connectiions continue to
be unstable and fail frequently thereafter. Interestingly, opening
pidgin precipitates this connection failure (not sure about other
applications).

[Bug 275792] Re: Browsing internet after connecting through GSM does not work

2008-10-28 Thread Motin
Marking as invalid for network-manager since the same issue is found
when using wvdial.

This may help (a longshot but what the heck):
 DNS's are 10.11.12.13 and 10.11.12.14

This looks like a 3 (Three) connection, and by experience, those DNS servers
have never worked for me. Try their other pair of DNS servers instead:
/etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 80.251.192.244
nameserver 80.251.192.245

Does it work better?

It was, as you excellently put it, inappropriately starting previously

ktimetracker again shows everything being well), I can't provide a
screenshot, sorry.

[Bug 276990] Re: iwlagn causes kernel panic on 802.11n wifi

2008-10-28 Thread Steve Langasek
Based on previous comments in this bug, that's inaccurate. A number of
users have reported that lbm does fix the problem with 802.11n for them.

If the problem does affect 802.11g also then we certainly should mention
that in the release notes, but by all evidence it's incorrect to say
that only 802.11g is fixed.

I am a volunteer and as such I can only promise to do my best to get the

Since they can hardly become worse, that bit is a no-op. :-)

However, I can only echo the call for not making more noise here. As
the hardware drivers window and the place in the archive

begging nvidia. If they don't do anything about it and shrug at their
customers for older graphics cards, you should take this into account

[Bug 290179] [NEW] NM 0.7 should prompt user for an eventual GSM Modem PIN Code instead of failing silently

2008-10-28 Thread Motin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I love the 3g support including the configuration guide in NM 0.7 - it
is a brillliant step in making it easy for everyone to be able to
configure their GSM Modem quickly and without needing expertise
knowledge.

Unfortunately, NM never prompts the user for the modem's PIN code. The
user has to manually understand that the reason to the constant GSM
connection failures (without any bubble-type error messages...) is that
the modem PIN lock is not unlocked and then find the relevant setting in
nm-connection-editor.

I believe that this causes a majority of users with fully supported and
capable GSM modems to think that Ubuntu doesn't support their modem,
which is a shame...

[Bug 287883] Re: Apport says not enough memory, yet 5 GB free

2008-10-28 Thread Martin Pitt
Ah, thanks for the attachment. Unfortunately it doesn't even have a core
dump, because you already fed it through the apport GUI which removed it
(because it became too big).

Anyway, I think it makes sense for apport to put a boundary on core dump
sizes (currently available memory times 3/4), otherwise you'd
potentially wait for ages if your machine starts swapping, and would
rightfully become very angry about our stupid crash reporting system.

So I close this bug for now, since it seems that the dump was actually
that big (which can happen due to memory corruption, too; I can hardly
imagine that pidgin takes 5 GB of RAM...)

[Bug 181726] Re: swap not mounted after repartitioning

2008-10-28 Thread David Greaves
I just upgraded to Intrepid.

Hibernate failed in Hardy and I wanted to see if it was fixed.
It wasn't.
It turns out I'd added more RAM and nothing noticed that swap was smaller than
RAM.

I used gparted to resize the swap. That went smoothly. I did
swapoff/resize/swapon from inside gparted.

Then when I rebooted I had no swap.

gparted did not update fstab with the UUID (or it changed the UUID)

[Bug 290184] [NEW] suspendresume slow with fglrx driver in intrepid

2008-10-28 Thread Laurent Bonnaud
Public bug reported:

I use an ACER Travelmate 8200 laptop with this graphic card and the
fglrx driver:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M56P [Radeon
Mobility X1600]

With gutsy suspend (to RAM) and resume worked very well. With the
2.6.24-21-generic kernel I managed to get more than 30 days of uptime
with at least 2 or 3 suspendresume cycles per day. Suspending and
resuming was fast (less than 5 seconds).

With intrepid suspendresume still works, but is much slower.
Suspending takes more than 20 seconds and resuming generates a lot of
disk activity.

Here is what I see in the kernel log:

[62338.708266] PM: suspend devices took 17.976 seconds

I believe that the cause of the problem is the fglrx driver because I
see the following error messages:

$ dmesg | grep failure
[62330.699292] pm-suspend: page allocation failure. order:10, mode:0x4020
[62331.571286] pm-suspend: page allocation failure. order:10, mode:0x4020

thank you for your bug report. how is that a gconf-editor bug? gconf-
editor is an interface to browse gconf keys and change their value. what
key can't you edit and what error do you get?

[Bug 290113] Re: package linux-image-2.6.24-21-generic 2.6.24-21.43 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2008-10-28 Thread Alex Cockell
BTW - here's lspci from my Thinkpad R61i...

Us end-users are waiting for kit like this to be certified as clean and
green with the new kernel - with nothing extra needing to be done...

Eagerly waiting for all these fixes to be OK without anything apart from
running Update Manager to accept them...

[Bug 289770] Re: adept does not show all packages

2008-10-28 Thread Peter
It seems there are 2 different utilities here; Adept Installer and Adept
Manager. They have the same name in the title bar, so it is not obvious
which one you have running.

The Adept Installer only lists a restricted range of packages, but it is
Adept Installer that is in the Kmenu (twice, under Computer and under
Applications).

The Adept Manager handles more packages, but is more difficult to find
in Kmenu. It is under System, and named Package Manager.

[Bug 289466] Re: Network Manager 0.7 applet not Appearing if there are managed entries in /etc/network/interfaces

2008-10-28 Thread DragonK
By the way, after I restart the NetworkManager service, the applet pops
up, but I can't do much with it as it shows a warning sign and says
networking disabled in the tooltip.

I'm guessing it might have something to do with this bug, but I might be wrong:

[Bug 281132] Re: Intrepid Ibex not compatible with Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller

2008-10-28 Thread Olivier
The above comment is incorrect. I've just updated the title and
description to properly describe the issue.

** Summary changed:

- Installer blacks out when KDE starts to load
+ Intrepid Ibex not compatible with Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics
Controller

** Description changed:

- When I boot on the Kubuntu CD (Intrepid Ibex) Beta and I either choose
- Install or the demo I see the screen with the progress bar which seems
- to go fine. The the screen shows the beginning of the KDE loading
- screen, I can see the disk icon fading in and then the screen flickers
- and goes black. Sometimes it flickers some more and sometimes the KDE
- loading sceen (with the disk icon) reappears briefly but after a while
- (a couple of seconds) it stays Black.
-
- If have a dual monitor setup with the primary monitor connected to an
- OnBoard Intel 82845G and the secondary monitor on a ATI Radeon 7000
- series. The monitors are both LG AL1716. What more information do I need
- to provide to make this work?
+ I've got a motherboard with an on-board Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV
+ Graphics Controller. When starting X with the i810 driver the screen
+ stays black. The only way I can get it to work is with the vesa
+ driver. It works find under Windows though. Which info is needed to
+ investigate this further.
