[Bug 494513] Re: package samba 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2009-12-10 Thread Franco Sirovich
Hello!
Hold on! I found the reason why smbd dies: I found in the logs that the
declared guest account did not exist. When corrected to an existing account
smbd starts ok.

I strongly agree with Haggai, keeping in mind that 8.04 is labelled as
Long Term Support: If running a LTS means that for long time you can run
a buggy code... then just let us know!
Thanks,
Franco

Some workarounds have been offered above. Why not use them to fix it in 8.04,

What more information is needed to send upstream?

Re: [Bug 204631] Re: MASTER firefox crashed with SIGSEGV in XInternAtom()

2009-01-23 Thread Franco Sirovich
Hello everybody!
The bug I reported is #216354, which was a crash of Firefox when trying
to submit a .crash report.
I do not have any crash report in /var/crash, and therefore I cannot try
with the latest Firefox version, which is the one I use.
By the way, seems to me that Firefox Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686;
en-GB; rv:1.9.0.5) Gecko/2008121621 Ubuntu/8.04 (hardy) Firefox/3.0.5
works well and is quite stable.
Thanks,

2008-12-11 Thread Franco Sirovich
Hi All!

Would it be possible to have an official statement by the Ubuntu Distro
on the issues, namely:

   1. Which level of support of national languages is committed to by
  the Ubuntu distro
   2. Which is the precise definition of LTS, and the commitments of to
  it, by the Ubuntu Distro

Not to argue ... simply to know and be aware of it!

 1. The upgrade did not renamed the existing xorg.conf, but it does not

to get back to the standard resolution (1280x800) is to completely
remove the xorg.conf (discovered after a few attempts sicne I read some
comments on bugs related to xorg that were talking about no xorg
 file).

 2. I previously was using the nvidia-gls-new restricted driver, but when
I open the Hardware Drivers administration tool, no driver is listed.
And in effect the Special Effects cannot be enabled if I try. If you try
to install the restricted driver (again) apparently everything is ok,
but no driver is loaded. If you try to run the NVIDIA X Srver Settings
tool, it complains that yiu apparently do not have an X server running
(since it cannot find the xorg.conf file!) and if you run 'sudo nvidia-
xconfig' of course it creates an xorg.conf that X does not like and you
are back in low resolution mode again! Consequently, you cannot enable
the special effects that require the restricted drivers.

Dear Hervé,

Unfortunately, I do not have a .conf that is accepted by the current

Hi!
THanks, I have tried but no way: still going to low resolution. But it
did something more: It set the card to a mode so that when I removed the

[Bug 216354] [NEW] firefox crashed with SIGSEGV in __kernel_vsyscall()

2008-04-12 Thread Franco Sirovich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Firefox 3.0b5 crashed when the crash report program (activated for a crash on
jockey-gtk) opened it.
This crash is reported by double-clicking on
/var/crash/_usr_lib_firefox-3.0b5_firefox.1000.crash, following the instruction
given in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox-3.0/+bug/184957/comments/19,
becuase the crash reported I submitted earlier was missing a valid backtrace.
Actually, almost all the reports from a crash with Firefox I submitted are
missing the backtrace. Is tehre anything I can do to have a good crash report
aubmitted. Otherwise it makes no sense to spend time to report!

Re: [Bug 215116] Re: firefox crashed with SIGSEGV

2008-04-10 Thread Franco Sirovich
Hi Pedro!
It is the second time that I submit a crash of Firefox 3.0b5. I am no
expert, and I do not know how to submit the required information, and I
assume I run the latest available package of Firefox, since I update my
Hardy as soon as I receive notice of available updates.
If you do not tell me what I have to do, ... I'll stop sending you
useless information!
Thanks,

Franco Sirovich

again with the latest available package. Thanks in advance for your
 cooperation and understanding.

Re: [Bug 196277] Re: [hardy] keyboard layout switching shortcut doesn't work after reboot

2008-04-09 Thread Franco Sirovich
Dear Larry, thank you for the suggestions. I have tried it and in fact
it works as it did the setting of the typing speed under Gutsy: It is
(and was) not a great solution, in that it decreases to a very little
level the jumping of the cursor, provided that the rate is set very
high. You solution is better than the previous because the applet had a
limit of 300 for the rate, and instead with your script I can set it to
500 and it seems better!

I have a related question: I have tried to set the two keys using
gconf-editor, but it does not seem to work; and I have noticed that the
two keys (rate and delay) are classified as having no schema: What
does it mean?

Thank you in advance,

Franco Sirovich

Locale settings are just similar. You can first check them using
 gconf-editor. They are in
 /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd/
 layouts = [us]
 model = [precision_m] (I am using a dell laptop)

You can change the shell script accordingly. This bug remains not fixed
 in today's update.

[Bug 200923] [NEW] [Hardy] No typing speed control in accessibility

2008-03-11 Thread Franco Sirovich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-accessibility-themes

Hi!
I am not sure the package I indicate is the right one.
I work with 8.04 beta on a VAIO VGN-SZ3XP/C, Core 2 duo T7200.
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=8.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=hardy
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION=Ubuntu hardy (development branch)
kernet version 2.6.24-12-generic

I cannot set anymore the typing speed in Keybord Preference -
Accessibility as it was possible in Gutsy. This was a workaround for the
problem of my bad typing which caused the cursor to get back in the
window where I was typing (such as OpenOffic Writer!) or even switching
suddenly to anoter window. Now the same problems appear with Hardy but I
cannot set a higher typing speed /char/sec) as a workaround.

Probably the subject of the report is misleading: I would like that the
cursor doesn't jump around in my window or in another window or in a
menu in response to my typing keys simultaneously: setting the Keybord
to be prepared for a very high typing speed was a workaround!

Thanks,

Franco

2008-03-11 Thread Franco Sirovich
Hello everybody!
I work with 8.04 beta on a VAIO VGN-SZ3XP/C, Core 2 duo T7200, and use the
following modules:

With Ubuntu hardy (development branch), kernel 2.6.24-11-generic I had the
same reported problem, but now with Ubuntu hardy (development branch), kernel
2.6.24-12-generic both suspend and hibernate work well with network manager.

Re: [Bug 184581] Re: Problem with Visual Effects under Ubuntu 7.10

2008-03-08 Thread Franco Sirovich
Dear Gregg, I finally had time to install Hardy. I activated the extra
visual effects and OpenOffice works correctly!
I do not have installed the CompizConfig Settings Manager, that does not
come with the 8.04, and therefore I don't know whether Workarounds is
enabled or not. But anyway, now the special effects work, they are set
approximately as I had them using the CompizConfig Settings Manager, and
I am satisfied!! I do not want to install something that is not on the
beta, otherwise the problem reports might be confusing...
Problem is solved, as far as I am concerned.
Thanks a lot for your efforts,

Franco

 Franco,

 Thank you for your response.

One thing you can try when using the LiveCD is after installing the
nvidia-glx-new driver is to restart X (the software that controls the
graphics). To do that a quick way is by pressing CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE.
That will kill X (and any running program) and it will restart itself.
That might be enough to be able to use the Visual Effects. If not...

If you are willing to install 8.04 on that separate partition that would
be great. And yes, you can install it without effecting your current
installation. Just make sure you know which partition you want to
install it on and only format that one (not any others).

 Thanks!

Dear Gregg, I tried but still the special effects are not available. By
the way, the X server did not get the CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE signal, and I
instead killed the X process.

I will try to install the 8.04 but I am afraid I will have no time for
it until Friday...
I'll keep you informed!

2008-02-18 Thread Franco Sirovich
Dear Greg!
Thanks for your time and efforts!
I have tried the live image, but with it on my computer the special
effects cannot be enabled.
I have a VAIO VGN-SZ3XP/C with NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400. I have tried to
install the nvidia-glx-new driver but probably it needs a reboot that
doesn't work with the live CD. I have a partition I could install 8.04
on, but I do not know whether I would loose the 7.10 I have on the
remaining partitions. Sorry for my ignorance!|

Let me know how I could help you,

Franco Sirovich

Greg Grossmeier wrote:
Thanks for the bug report and information for the workaround.

Could someone experiencing this problem please try the latest
development version of Ubuntu (8.04 Hardy) to see if the problem still
 persists?

You can use a LiveCD so you don't have to install it on your harddrive.
 Get it here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/

 Thanks!

[Bug 184581] Re: Problem with Visual Effects under Ubuntu 7.10

2008-01-21 Thread Franco Sirovich
Hello Everybody!
I have found a workaround and I have some huint about the feature that is
responsible for the problem.
I have installe the compizconfig-settings-manager, and then adopted the
custom variant of the Special Effects. Using the Advanced Desktop Effects
Settings control that appears on the Preference pull down menu, I worked with
the various features that appear there and found that is I disable the
Workaroundsfeature that is located under the Utility category, OPenOffice
works perfectly.
So, disabling Workarounds is a workaround (:-)!

Public bug reported:

When I enable Visual Effect under the Appearance control in Ubuntu 7.10, and

close ommediately. The same happens if I use the Alt-keys to access menus. No
messages on standard output. If OpenOffice is already started when I enable the
Visual Effetct the pull-down menus are ok. OpenOffice is the only package
