[Bug 778224] Re: Menus don't work

2011-11-24 Thread Kimiko Koopman
Ah, I figured out how to work around this bug. Menus will work again if
you disable the window manager's compositing.

[Bug 811643] [NEW] RFE: external mail filtering

2011-07-16 Thread Kimiko Koopman
Public bug reported:

Ahead of the proposed move from Evolution to Thunderbird as default mail client
for Oneiric, I've tried it out for myself for a week.
I like that it is much faster and allows one to remove/hide unnecessary
features like calendars and printing. (the tab bar can't be removed though it
seems).

One (imho) essential feature that Thunderbird is missing though is the
ability to run incoming mail through an external filter. There is an
option to heed SpamAssassin headers, but no option (and no plugin either
that I could find) to get those SA headers from any source other than
the mail server. Thunderbird has its own spam filtering built in, but it
is simply not as good as the real thing.

[Bug 668392] Re: HP / LG blu-ray drive gets softreset failed errors on 64 bit but not 32 bit

2011-05-26 Thread Kimiko Koopman
I also have an ASUS M4A88TD-M EVO motherboard (AMD SB800) and LG
CH10LS20 bluray drive combination. Booting Ubuntu (Maverick) is very
slow due to the softreset failed errors. They cause the drive to lock
up so hard that (after a warm reboot) even the BIOS doesn't detect it
anymore and the tray won't open or close. Only a cold reboot remedies
that.

The suggested fix of adding libata.force=#:nohrst to the boot options
worked for me too. The drive is now detected and working properly.

I've edited the bug's title to make it easier for LG owners to find it.

[Bug 720799] Re: Too many connections error on boot caused by ALC892 soundchip

2011-03-27 Thread Kimiko Koopman
More discussion of this problem (Too many connections error, and no sound
output on Realtek ALC892) is here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1635278

Here
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/gaming-multimedia-entertainment/168732-solved-no-sound-alsa-except-microphone.html
someone seems to have solved the problem by building new sound modules from
source provided by Realtek:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1PNid=14PFid=24Level=4Conn=3DownTypeID=3GetDown=false
When I tried to follow that however, I ended up with sound modules that
wouldn't load because of unknown symbols.

Could someone more tech-savvy alert the kernel/alsa folks upstream to
this problem?

[Bug 717365] [NEW] regression: latest update fails to play some video files

2011-02-11 Thread Kimiko Koopman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mplayer

The recent (yesterday?) update to version 1.0rc4-4.5.2 (package version
1.0~rc4.dfsg1-1ubuntu1) seems to have broken something, because it now
gives this error

[mkv] Track 2 has been compressed with an unknown/unsupported compression
[mkv] algorithm (3). Skipping track.

followed by repeating

[h264 @ 0x7f0d58e5e020]AVC: nal size 521
[h264 @ 0x7f0d58e5e020]no frame!
Error while decoding frame!

on a file identified as having video format avc1.

After downgrading to version 1.0rc4-4.4.5 (package version
1.0~rc4~try1.dsfg1-1ubuntu1) it plays the file without any trouble. The
older version identifies the file as having video format H264. Both
versions try to use the ffh264 video codec.

[Bug 202288] Re: Totem loses sound when seeking or when switching language

2011-01-26 Thread Kimiko Koopman
Wow, it's been almost three years since I reported that bug. I switched to
MPlayer shortly afterwards, and haven't really looked back at Totem.
Anyways, I just did a quick check, and I can't reproduce the bug at the moment.
Unless one of the others who confirmed it still experience this problem, I
think you can close the bug report.

I just checked Gnome Bugzilla. This bug is known there under

Gnome bug [[https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=634156|#634156]] also
looks promising though, as it offers an explanation (and patch) for the
apparent random disappearance of backgrounds.

[Bug 657576] [NEW] maverick / radeon: repeated errors during boot

2010-10-10 Thread Kimiko Koopman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

As you can see in the attached dmesg log, an error message from radeon /
ttm is repeated many many times during boot (i.e. before the login
screen appears). These errors flash by too fast to read them, so it
looks as if the display is broken or something.

I also see some suspicious messages about remounts and some IRQ that I
didn't get before Maverick, but they're probably not related directly to
this radeon thing.

FWIW, I'm using the X default (i.e. no xorg.conf present) of radeon only
because the new fglrx driver didn't work at all (black screen, computer
hangs) any more. It was fine back in Lucid (3D acceleration and all).

[Bug 609827] Re: Tray icon doesn't show anymore in 1.6.3

Ah, I see. I thought the assigning of bugs was only for developers.

I've installed the +sikon1 packages, and now Liferea works as it should
again, with a tray icon.

Thank you for your very quick replies ^_^

[Bug 609827] Re: Tray icon doesn't show anymore in 1.6.3

I just checked again. Liferea is running, but no tray icon is shown. I
can make the main window show up by running liferea -w shown (WARNING
**: Liferea seems to be running already!), but still no tray icon. When
I click the × on the main window, it just disappears.

Why am I the assignee for this bug? I'm not involved in this project

[Bug 609827] [NEW] Tray icon doesn't show anymore in 1.6.3

2010-07-25 Thread Kimiko Koopman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: liferea

After updating the Liferea package to version 1.6.3 (-1ubuntu3), the
tray icon doesn't work anymore.

I tried adding an indicator applet to the panel, but that shows other
unnecessary icons, and combines Liferea and Pidgin (which does still
have its own tray icon) into one email-looking icon, thus obscuring new
news items.

I've downgraded back to version 1.6.2 for now. Please put back Liferea's
tray icon. It wasn't perfect, but much better than that indicator thing.

[Bug 74360] Re: Several compose key combinations don't work

Why is this bug set as Fix Released?
I'm using version 2.21.2-0ubuntu3 of gtk+2.0 (from maverick), and the

2010-03-09 Thread Kimiko Koopman
Yes, I made the requested log. Sorry for the delay. Evolution got stuck
checking for mail again.

During the logging, I tried to play some music using Rhythmbox, play
some event sounds from Pidgin's preferences dialog, and watch a video
with MPlayer (from command line, not GUI). The only time the sound
wasn't just the noise was the first time I unpaused the music (after the
Pidgin experiment); then I heard the music for maybe half a second. I
tried to wait a bit before the MPlayer experiment, but that didn't help.
Strange, because an hour ago I could watch video with MPlayer just fine
(although no event sounds happened to mess things up).

Well, I hope you can make sense of the output :/

[Bug 534747] [NEW] Sound is randomly replaced with noise

2010-03-08 Thread Kimiko Koopman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Sounds (such as system sounds, or Pidgin sounds) and music (Rhythmbox)
are randomly, but very often, replaced with low-volume crackling noise.

This began earlier today when I upgraded to the latest Lucid Pulseaudio
packages and a 2.6.32 kernel. It's not that sound doesn't work at all.
It does work a few times (sounds) or for a while (music), but then just
disappears into that noise. Then after I wait a while, and no sound has
played, it will work correctly again for a bit before disappearing
again.

There doesn't seem to be a pattern to it unfortunately, and I see no
error messages in /var/log/syslog either. PA Volume Control shows the
sounds and/or music playing as they should too, even when they don't.

Versions:
Pulseaudio: 1:0.9.22~0.9.21+stable-queue-32-g8478-0ubuntu11
Kernel: 2.6.32-16 amd64

I'll attach the output of 'pactl'. Let me know if there's any other info

[Bug 489049] [NEW] RFE: option to have function buttons apply immediately

2009-11-26 Thread Kimiko Koopman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gcalctool

I would like to see an option in GCalctool to have function buttons like
[√] and [sin] apply/replace the current number immediately, like regular
calculators do. Well, at least my old TI-30 used to do that, and xcalc
emulated that model IIRC. I prefer that to having to type the function
before the rest like I were writing out the equation on paper.

Where did the [x²] button go btw? It's kinda cumbersome to have to spell
out x^2 all the time.

[Bug 301755] Re: Crackling noise after update to pulseaudio

2009-10-28 Thread Kimiko Koopman
Any version of Pulseaudio after 0.9.15-4ubuntu3 (i.e. 0.9.16 and above)
has this problem for me. Regular desktop sounds are about half-half
crackly noise, and MPlayer doesn't play proper sound at all. Downgrading
back to 0.9.15 solves it.

Karmic's official release is awfully close. You'd better do something
about this problem quickly. Pulseaudio is a rather important part of the
current desktop.

[Bug 423643] [NEW] mplayer should use the shared libass instead of a compiled-in version

2009-09-03 Thread Kimiko Koopman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mplayer

Trying to set up MPlayer to display ASS subtitles, I found that it uses
a compiled-in version of libass instead of the installed shared library.
Why is that? The separate libass package can be kept up to date more
easily, as well as shared with other programs of course. Please fix this
shortcoming.

Karmic has these versions:
MPlayer 2:1.0~rc3+svn20090426-1ubuntu5
libass 0.9.6-1

Newer packages found in PPAs:
MPlayer svn20090831r29604
libass 0.9.7-0ubuntu1~ppa0

I've no idea which versions of libass the MPlayer packages have built
into them, which is quite annoying when I want it to use the most recent
version for the best ASS subtitle support.

[Bug 313294] [NEW] MPlayer causes X lockup on fglrx

2009-01-02 Thread Kimiko Koopman
Public bug reported:

Using the gl2 output, gmplayer sometimes (not always, but annoyingly often)
causes an X lockup when its window is restored (de-minimized, or clicked to the
foreground from behind another window). The whole screen will freeze, with only
a black rectangle showing where the MPlayer window is supposed to be. At first
I thought the whole system was hung, but I've discovered that there are
Alt+SysRq+.. combinations that still work even when regular Ctrl+Alt+Del
doesn't anymore.
So, today I was checking some log files after rebooting from such a crash, and
hey, what do you know, there is some kind of error/trace in /var/log/messages
(attached).

[Bug 311946] [NEW] bmpx crashes randomly while playing music files

2008-12-28 Thread Kimiko Koopman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bmpx

As the summary says, BMPx randomly crashes all the time while playing
regular Oggs or MP3s. Sometimes it'll go through several songs without
trouble, sometimes it doesn't even make it past the first one. The
crashes don't seem to occur particularly at song changes.

Because BMPx forks into two different processes immediately after
starting, I started those two directly from the commandline to get the
bug's output (if any). Here's the result:

[Bug 216197] Re: no weather information in gnome panel

2008-11-09 Thread Kimiko Koopman
The clock doesn't show weather info for me either, even though the
checkbox is marked.

My city (Leiden, Netherlands) isn't listed, so I have to enter the
timezone and coordinates manually. The closest weather info is from
Valkenburg, Netherlands, but that info is not shown when I enter my
city.

Conversely, I do get weather info when I choose Valkenburg, Netherlands,
but then I can't change the location name and coordinates anymore. The
dialog allows me to edit them, but it simply disregards my edits when I
click Okay.

The applet should either allow me to specifiy both my own location and
the weather info to use, or select the closest weither info
automatically.

I think this is a regression from some earlier version, because my old
installation (upgraded in place over the years from warty or something
like that all the way to jaunty) does show both the correct location and
weather info.

[Bug 216197] Re: no weather information in gnome panel

2008-11-09 Thread Kimiko Koopman
Oh, I found the solution (which is probably also what I used on the old
installation). Using gconf-editor, you can edit the key
/apps/panel/applets/clock_screen0/prefs/cities. The 'code=' field of
it was set to '(null)'. After changing that part to 'EHVB', the clock
applet now shows both the correct location (Leiden) and weather info
(from Valkenburg).

Still, there should be an easier way to accomplish this than using
gconf-editor.

[Bug 207700] Re: Doesn't allow bold/italic selection on Japanese fonts

2008-08-27 Thread Kimiko Koopman
Is that the same version as is currently in the Intrepid repository?
That's the version I use: 2.4.7-1ubuntu1

The fonts in the xfonts-efont-unicode-ib package are listed as
h14_bi.pcf, h16_b.pcf, etc., both by the Gimp and other programs, so I
suppose that's because they don't have proper names. Selecting one of
them has no effect on how text typed in the Text Editor dialog is
displayed however. Not for text in Latin alphabet nor for text in kana
or kanji.

Selecting a different font (say, 'DejaVu Sans') only affects the Latin
text, not the kana or kanji characters. 'DejaVu Sans Bold Oblique' would
result in the Latin text becoming bold and italic, but the kana/kanji
text remains unchanged.

The font selector in for example the Gnome Control Center has a separate
list of font styles (as opposed to including them in the font name).
That means that when I select 'Italic' in that list, that style is
applied to the text in the rendered sample, regardless of the characters
used. This is what I would like to be able to do in the Gimp too.

Does this explain the issue more clearly? Let me know if you need more
info.

[Bug 229017] [NEW] doesn't find CJK pronunciations when searching

2008-05-10 Thread Kimiko Koopman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gucharmap

Searching for the pronunciation of CJK characters doesn't find anything.
When the 'Search in character details' box is checked, it should include
those pronunciations.

For example, searching for 'usagi' should find the 兎 character (514E) by
its Japanese (kun) pronunciation. I seem to recall that some earlier
version did this just fine.

versions: gucharmap 1:2.22.1-0ubuntu2, libgucharmap6 1:2.22.1-0ubuntu2

BTW, would it be possible to include the 'Search in character details'
check in the persistent settings?

This same thing happens with an avi file I have here. Nautilus and Totem

I've seen this kind of error before, but thought it was a mistake on the

[Bug 16947] Re: Apply --important option to apt-cache depends

2008-03-28 Thread Kimiko Koopman
Reported in 2005? Wow, that's ages ago.

I just tried with apt-cache from apt-0.7.9ubuntu15, and no, the
--important option still doesn't affect the output of apt-cache depends.

I guess I was trying to look up the dependencies of a package back then
and didn't want all the Suggests and Recommends junk to be printed as
well.

Well, it's certainly low-priority, as I haven't even thought about this
report since then. But it is only a wishlist item anyway. It just makes
sense I think that the --important option would apply to all output.

[Bug 207700] [NEW] Doesn't allow bold/italic selection on Japanese fonts

2008-03-27 Thread Kimiko Koopman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gimp

In Gnome, I can select additional styles such as Bold and Italic on kana
fonts. I also have the xfonts-efont-unicode-ib package installed which
explicitly provides bold/italic versions of some kana fonts. The Gimp
however doesn't give me the option of setting Bold or Italic on kana
fonts in the Text Tool box. I think this is a bug.

Why doesn't the Gimp use the standard Gnome font selection dialog
anyway? Having to type the name and style manually instead of selecting
them from a list is kinda cumbersome.

Yes, I have the gstreamer0.10-plugins-base package installed (and the

is reported to work.

gstreamer0.10-plugins-base: 0.10.17.3-1

I just tried loading the movie file (.ogm) again after moving the .srt
file away, but there are still no subtitles and the Subtitles submenu is
empty.

[Bug 203971] [NEW] RFE: Please add support for SSA subtitle format

2008-03-19 Thread Kimiko Koopman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

A recent set of movies I downloaded came with subtitles in the SSA (Sub
Station Alpha) format. Totem would not open and use these subtitles,
even when I dragged them to it from Nautilus manually. I had to install
an extra package Gaupol to convert them to SubRip (SRT) format by hand
before Totem would autoload and display the subtitles. If a simple
program like Gaupol can read this format it shouldn't be too hard to add
support for it to Totem, right? From a quick web search it seems to be a
popular subtitle format. Thanks in advance :)

[Bug 202288] [NEW] Loses sound when seeking or when switching language

2008-03-14 Thread Kimiko Koopman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

I've only noticed this yet in .mkv movies (which Nautilus reports as 'Matroska'
something or other I think).
When starting Totem (the gstreamer variant that is) with the video, it will
play it okay, but with some default language selected. When I change the
language, sound stops, even though the video keeps playing. The same thing
happens when seeking in the movie, whether it is using the keyboard or the
scroll wheel or dragging the position slider (BTW, isn't there supposed to be a
Seek To: hh:mm:ss dialog available somewhere? I can't find it).
Since Totem often (but strangely, not always) picks the worng language for
audio and I like to skip back or forth now and then, this makes it rather
useless in playing .mkv movies.

totem: 2.22.0-0ubuntu1
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg: 0.10.3-6
gstreamer0.8-ffmpeg: 0.8.7-10ubuntu1 (I'm not sure this package is still
needed, but the v0.10 packages never actually _replaced_ the v0.8 ones in Apt)

Do you need more version numbers? I have all the latest gstreamer 0.10 packages
installed from Hardy.
Sorry, can't give you an example of a movie that gets messed up. They're all
way too large to upload here.

[Bug 196822] Re: upon start, uses 100% CPU and delays showing window

2008-03-14 Thread Kimiko Koopman
Finally got the 0.46 version through the package repository (it always takes a
few days to get there it seems). I'm sorry, but Inkscape still does the same
thing: wait (appears to hang) with 100% CPU (good thing there's two of them in
this PC, eh?) for about 1.5 minutes (or so; I didn't time it) before showing
the window and running normally. I've also tried it on my root account (which
hadn't run inkscape before I think), but the same thing happens there.
Ah well, take your time finding/fixing this bug. Inkscape isn't a program I use
often anyway.

[Bug 173432] Re: gnome-appearance-properties no wallpaper add in GUI on Hardy

2007-12-16 Thread Kimiko Koopman
I had this same problem today. The gnome-control-center package is version
1:2.21.2-0ubuntu2.
I tried manually editing the backgrounds.xml file, but that caused the
background manager (or whatever it's called) to clear and reset it to the
default Gnome backgrounds. Now I can't add any of my own anymore and I'm stuck
with the default ones :(

If the bug doesn't appear in a later/upstream version, could you put

[Bug 102678] Re: xscreensaver version is ancient

2007-09-02 Thread Kimiko Koopman
Aye. I've been wondering why there haven't been any new hacks added for
such a long time when we used to have one or two new ones every few
months.

Is there a .deb package of the new version available somewhere? I'll
install that until Ubuntu gets updated.

Come on folks. I switched from Debian to Ubuntu because Ubuntu had the
newer stuff. Don't make me look for another Linux distro again. I'm
tired of switching distros every few years.

[Bug 129587] RFE: remove 'message sent on behalf of'

In version 2.11.6, Evolution suddenly started to add a notice of This
message was sent by [mailing list] on behalf of [sender]. Well of
course it was. I know it is coming from a mailing list, I even sort my

[Bug 71106] Chipset 0x5964 is not recognized

Public bug reported:

[Bug 38181] Re: Screensaver freezes on Dapper (ATI Radeon 8500 LE)

2006-11-02 Thread Kimiko Koopman
Ah, I've finally found the right bug # for this.
This problem has been around for a long time for me, and still prevents me from
using 3D screensavers. Other GL apps seem to work okay, although I haven't
tested this a lot. Both the xscreensaver-demo previews and the actual
screensaving freeze the system randomly. Sometimes it takes longer, sometimes
shorter, but eventually they all freeze the system. No ctrl-alt-key combination
works to get a clean shutdown, only the reset or power-off buttons work.

My videocard is identified as a ATI Radeon 9200 SE (RV280). Package
versions are from current Feisty (==Edgy, since it's only been a few
days since that release).

Let me know if you need copies of config files, okay?

Yep, Epiphany has the same problem. It opens the file
/usr/share/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose a gazillion times (once for

larger this time, so I attached it.

Oh, and another thing I noticed is that my /tmp directory contains a
