[Bug 1338062] [NEW] libav-tools throws warnings while installing

2014-07-05 Thread Peter Lemieux
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu 14.04 updated through 7/4/14
Libav version: 6:9.13-0ubuntu0.14.04.1

During the installation of libav-tools, dpkg complains as follows:

Preparing to unpack .../libav-tools_6%3a9.13-0ubuntu0.14.04.1_i386.deb ...
dpkg: error: --compare-versions takes three arguments: version relation
version

Type dpkg --help for help about installing and deinstalling packages [*];
Use 'apt' or 'aptitude' for user-friendly package management;
Type dpkg -Dhelp for a list of dpkg debug flag values;
Type dpkg --force-help for a list of forcing options;
Type dpkg-deb --help for help about manipulating *.deb files;

Options marked [*] produce a lot of output - pipe it through 'less' or 'more' !
Unpacking libav-tools (6:9.13-0ubuntu0.14.04.1) ...

As far as I can tell, the software is correctly installed despite these
complaints.

[Bug 1275376] Re: apt-get autoremove should leave (n-1)th kernel

2014-03-09 Thread Peter Lemieux
It seemed that autoremove ignored a stale kernel on my machine. Once I
manually removed older kernels, recent kernel updates now work
correctly. I currently have just 3.13.0-13 and 3.13.0-12 installed by
using autoremove after the most recent round of updates.

This report should probably be closed.

[Bug 1275376] [NEW] apt-get autoremove should leave (n-1)th kernel

2014-02-01 Thread Peter Lemieux
Public bug reported:

Running autoremove tonight on a 13.10 machine being upgraded to 14.04, I
was informed by apt-get that I could delete no longer needed kernel
packages with autoremove. When I did so I was left with just the
current kernel. I suggest that autoremove should always leave the
(n-1)th kernel behind. Otherwise users cannot revert to the previous
kernel if something goes wrong. I believe this has been the default
behavior for apt-get autoremove for some time now.

You could argue that if a user is able to run autoremove, then there is
no point to keeping the previous kernel image. I disagree. Users may
not test out all their connected devices before running autoremove and
then discover they cannot use a camera or audio device.

Release: 14.04 (Trusty)
Package: apt, Version: 0.9.14.1ubuntu2 (and earlier)
Expected: apt-get autoremove would leave current and prior kernel images
installed
Actual: only current kernel image remains

[Bug 1123330] [NEW] Shutdown fails when hwclock cannot be set

2013-02-12 Thread Peter Lemieux
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu 12.04.1

I have an older laptop with, I suspect, a failed or failing battery.
When I shutdown or reboot the computer it hangs at the hwclock command
in /etc/init/hwclock-save.conf. Apparently there is no timeout applied
to this command. The system repeatedly keeps trying and failing to save
the system time to the hardware clock so the shutdown process never
completes.

I have solved the problem for myself by commenting out the appropriate
command in /etc/init/hwclock-save.conf. I diagnosed the problem by
switching to another tty and observing the shutdown sequence hang at the
hwclock command. However a less experienced user would wonder why the
shutdown splash screen continues to be displayed, but the computer never
halts.

There should be some method for checking whether the command can be
executed, or at least a time out applied so that it doesn't keep
checking forever.

[Bug 1047698] Re: Keyboard unresponsive when 32-bit 12.04.1 installed on 64-bit system

2012-09-10 Thread Peter Lemieux
Let's see how I would do this.

First, I would need to reinstall the i386 version of 12.04.1 that had
the unresponsive keyboard error. I might be able to free up some space
for this. Then I would boot into the known broken i386 version.

Then I guess I would have to use SSH to connect remotely to the non-
functioning computer after the installation since I cannot use the
keyboard. I should then download and install the updated kernel you
pointed to above. Then I could return to the original machine, reboot
it and see if the keyboard works. Are those the steps you want me to
undertake?

Remember the computer works fine with the amd64 version of the stock
12.04.1 kernel that comes on the installation CD. It only fails when
the i386 version is installed. Obviously I've already deleted that
version from the machine entirely and overwrote the partition in which
it was installed with the working amd64 version.

I have no idea what logs I would collect. Nor do I have the i386

this is just an automated or standard response, then perhaps a real
human will advise me on what to do. I'm not going to reinstall the i386

additional information about my hardware that will help, I'll be glad to
provide it.

[Bug 1047698] [NEW] Keyboard unresponsive when 32-bit 12.04.1 installed on 64-bit system

2012-09-07 Thread Peter Lemieux
Public bug reported:

I've installed various versions of Kubuntu many times but recently
encountered a very strange bug.

I installed by mistake a copy of the i386 version of 12.04.1 on my
64-bit system running an Intel Q6600 @ 2.40GHz. I could type into the
login box, but once I got to the desktop, anything I typed into a
Konsole window took forever to appear on screen or did not appear at
all. I was also unable to perform normal activities with the mouse like
making the panel appear from auto-hide. It would appear briefly then
disappear again before I could do anything. I could use the mouse to
navigate around the screen, though tasks like moving windows were very
slow.

I searched in vain for an explanation for this phenomenon, one I have
never encountered in Kubuntu, or indeed in any Linux distribution so
far. I then realized that I had used an i386 installation CD and
thought perhaps it was an architecture mismatch. Indeed that seems to
be the case. I'm now typing this message on the same machine, and with
the same Logitech wireless keyboard that did not work before, after
having installed the amd64 version of Kubuntu 12.04.1 instead.

I tried using both a wired USB keyboard and a PS/2 keyboard and
encountered the same problem. I also had the problem where my root
partition was marked read-only because of a mismatch between between
local time and UTC. I ran fsck and remounted / and also synchronized
the hardware and system clocks. None of that resolved the keyboard
problem. I'm pretty sure it has to be an architecture-related issue as
this was the first time I tried installing an i386 version of the system
on this machine.

I've attached the output of lshw to this report. If you need more
details, I'll be happy to provide them.

[Bug 459730] Re: rsyslog doesn't create /dev/xconsole

2012-06-05 Thread Peter Lemieux
Having just encountered this on a copy of 12.04 Server running on a
virtual machine, I endorse Kenyon Ralph's approach in post 33 above. I
don't intend to run X on this machine, so it's easiest to comment out
the part at the end of /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf that pipes some
output to /dev/xsession.

I think the server version of this file should have the pipe to xsession
disabled by default. Ubuntu Server doesn't ship with a version of X so
the current 50-default.conf file conflicts with the basic configuration
of the distribution.

[Bug 769274] Re: Phonon default capture device preferences are not saved

2011-04-29 Thread Peter Lemieux
It doesn't appear that saving the settings changes anything in
~/.kde/share/config/phonondevices. When I save a different ordering of
devices, the datestamp on the file doesn't change, and the only file
whose datestamp changes is ~/.kde/share/config/systemsettingsrc which
has no information about sound devices.

There are also two files in ~/.config/kde.org/, but neither of them are
relevant as well. I've looked in a couple of other likely spots and
cannot find any configuration file that is changed when I save settings
in this dialog.

As the poster of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/phonon/+bug/638965, I can
confirm that it has nothing to do with that report. (In fact, I later
determined that I had missed the prefer/defer buttons.)

resulting ISO would nearly fill a DVD, but in fact it only was 1.5 GB in
size.

I'm wondering whether it might be possible to use mencoder to determine
the bitrate of each source file and use that to calculate the expected
size of the output file.

Unfortunately, some containers don't include the bitrates; mplayer
routinely reports these files as having a bit rate of zero.  However,;
they can be determined using mencoder like this:

mencoder file.mkv -ovc copy -nosound -o /dev/null -endpos 120

This command plays the first 120 seconds of the file into /dev/null
then writes a summary like this:

Video stream: 1875.306 kbit/s (234413 B/s) size: 28139352 bytes
120.042 secs 2881 frames

Could this approach improve the size estimation process?

[Bug 549585] Re: Wlan connection peridically lost (set_device_state error)

2010-10-01 Thread Peter Lemieux
I installed the 9/28 daily build of Maverick Meerkat with

been up for well over twenty-four hours at 54 mbit. Thanks to the
developers for fixing this problem. Let's hope it doesn't rear its ugly

[Bug 549585] Re: Wlan connection peridically lost (set_device_state error)

2010-09-17 Thread Peter Lemieux
Looking at my logs, it appears to be another incarnation of a
href=https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/548992;548992/a.
I see many deauthenticated from [router MAC] (Reason: 7) errors in
/var/log/syslog. A quick Google search for 'deauthenticated reason 7'
shows people reporting this problem on various distributions as far back
as 2008. Unfortunately obscure error messages like reason 7 don't
really give me much information to go on. I browsed a few of the items
that came up on Google but didn't see much that told me what reason 7
might be. I guess I could go browse the kernel source to try and figure
this out, but frankly that's more work than simply reverting back a
minor kernel upgrade.

[Bug 638965] Re: Cannot change audio input device

2010-09-16 Thread Peter Lemieux
Once again the problem seems related to PulseAudio. I removed Pulse
from my system so I'm using plain ALSA. Now the entire array of input
and output devices appear in Skype and the microphone works as expected
when I select it from the list.

Nevertheless, I still cannot switch the default audio input via
systemsettings. Selecting an item in the tree and choosing a preferred
input still does not make the Apply button active.

[Bug 638965] [NEW] Cannot change audio input device

2010-09-15 Thread Peter Lemieux
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: phonon

Kubuntu 10.10 beta + updates through 9/14/10

I recently purchased a Logitech Webcam Pro 9000 with a built-in
microphone that connects via USB. The device appears in the list of
capture devices when I run systemsettings and examine the Phonon
configuration along with the microphone input on the motherboard.
However I cannot select this device as my preferred choice for audio
capture. If I highlight any of the capture options in the tree and
select the Webcam 9000, the Apply button remains disabled.

This remains true even if I run 'sudo systemsettings' from the command
prompt. I cannot change the device either as a normal user or as root.

[Bug 555881] Re: Crash during install of grub in 10.04 beta1

2010-05-03 Thread Peter Lemieux
I now can't get past this error while installing the release version of
Kubuntu 10.04.

I have a separate /boot partition that I did not wish to format during
installation in case something went wrong. The drive has partitions for
Windows, swap, /home, /usr/local, and two partitions for the operating
systems. One is occupied by 9.10, the other was created to hold 10.04.

The first time I ran the installer everything worked as expected with
the 10.04 kernel images added to the grub menu. However I need to
reinstall after making some manual changes to the authentication files
in /etc that seemed to cause problems for dbus. All subsequent attempts
to install following the same procedure as before now results in the
ubiquity error during the installation of grub.

[Bug 482162] [NEW] cannot change default CD/DVD player in Kubuntu 9.04

2009-11-13 Thread Peter Lemieux
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace-bin

Kubuntu 9.04
amd64

For reference, see this discussion at the KDE forum:
http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=67t=77633

There appears to be no way for users to change the default player
software used to handle optical disks. No application appears to be
available in System Settings that lets the user change the handlers for
devices. One can change the default player for media files using File
Associations, but there are no options for handling optical discs. In
File Associations, one can change the handler for x-content/video-dvd,
but it does not change the options that are presented to the user when a
DVD is inserted.

It's possible to change the handlers by altering the contents of the
files stored in /usr/share/kde4/apps/solid/actions, but these are
outside the control of ordinary users. I can perhaps understand the
logic that says users shouldn't be allowed to modify handlers for
devices as a security measure, but it's not obvious whether that's the
rationale in this case. It's also not clear from reading the discussion
in the thread cited above whether this is a specfic Kubuntu packaging
decision or a restriction imposed by the KDE developers themselves.

Not being able to change the default device handlers is very annoying
and could well frustrate many ordinary users who have a favorite player
like VLC or smplayer that they'd prefer to use in place of Dragon.

[Bug 368977] Re: KDE4 forgets printer status / settings

2009-06-03 Thread Peter Lemieux
I have a similar problem. I configure a printer using the printer
configuration tool in the KDE Control Module. (This is an unbearably
slow procedure, by the way, though I doubt that's related to the bug
here.) I can then print, but if I shutdown or reboot, the configured
printer disappears from the list, and I'm forced to configure it again.

Kubuntu 9.04

I noticed that there was a substantial update of the CUPS software on
4/28. Also on 4/23, I see an update to this package: system-config-
printer-common_1.1.3+git20090218-0ubuntu19.1_all

Perhaps there's some conflict between these updates and the KDE4
configuration tool? The problem started to appear only recently, so
these updates look like plausible suspects.

This is pretty much a show-stopper in my mind. If people have to
reconfigure a printer repeatedly, they'll not be staying with Kubuntu
for long.

[Bug 368977] Re: KDE4 forgets printer status / settings

2009-06-03 Thread Peter Lemieux
I believe the problem has to do with file permissions. It seems like
you can set the configuration as an ordinary user and have it persist
even through logout and re-login, but rebooting the machine destroys the
saved configuration. For the moment I've fixed the problem by using
kmenuedit to require root permissions for the Printer Configuration
app. That approach created configuration files that persisted through
rebooting.

In addition a small announcement box flashes up on the screen when you
first save as an ordinary user, but it appears for only an instant so I
can't tell what it says. I'm guessing it's reporting an error. I also
get errors like these upon launch in .xsession-errors:

kcmshell(3619) KServiceFactory::findServiceByDesktopPath:
findServiceByDesktopPath: kcm-scpk.desktop not found

(kcm-scpk is the Python script that executes when you run Printer
Configuration.)

I've only recently come to Ubuntu from RedHat/Fedora and was surprised
not to be required to have root privileges when configuring printers.
As an ordinary user I should only be able to write to $HOME and /tmp. I
don't see any new files in those places when I run the Printer
Configuration utility under my ordinary username.

I'm going to file a bug under system-config-printer-kde since I think
the problem concerns how the KDE application works that may not occur
with GNOME Ubuntu.

[Bug 383269] [NEW] printer configuration lost after reboot

2009-06-03 Thread Peter Lemieux
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdeadmin

Related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/368977

Kubuntu 9.04
system-config-printer-kde 4:4.2.2-0ubuntu2
system-config-printer-common 1.1.3+git20090218-0ubuntu19.1
hal-cups-utils 0.6.19+git20090217-0ubuntu7
python-qt4 0.6.19+git20090217-0ubuntu7
python-qt4-dbus 4.4.4-2ubuntu6
python-kde4 4:4.2.2-0ubuntu2

Running as an ordinary user, I can create a printer configuration that
will persist through logout and re-login but will disappear upon reboot.
If I run with root privileges, I can create persistent configurations.

I do not see any configuration files written to my home directory when
system-config-printer-kde completes. I do see a notification box appear
and quickly disappear (too quickly to read, I'm afraid) the first time I
save the configuration. After that the box never reappears.

Also .xsession-errors contains entries like these when s-c-p-k is launched:
kcmshell(3619) KServiceFactory::findServiceByDesktopPath:
findServiceByDesktopPath: kcm-scpk.desktop not found

I can solve the problem by editing the Printer Configuration entry in
kmenuedit to require root privileges. I was, frankly, puzzled that they
weren't required to begin with.

** Affects: kdeadmin (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 280762] Re: knetworkmanager under kde4 doesn't recognize the static IP connections that I have configured.

2009-03-28 Thread Peter Lemieux
Jaunty alpha 6 still can't seem to make a static IP connection via
knetworkmanager; I have the beta but haven't tried it yet.

I'm in general agreement with the commentators above who believe this
app needs serious work now. I find it has many annoying features:

1) integration with kwallet - Regardless of whether the KDE devs think
everything should use the wallet, as a user it's a pain in the neck. I
tried disabling the wallet entirely upon which knetworkmanager crashed
and took the panel with it. What was wrong with the 4.1 functionality
where knetworkmanager kept its own passwords?

2) I cannot seem to launch a connection by double-clicking it in the
list displayed by Manage Connections. I had a stored configuration for
my router, but clicking on the tray icon to bring up the list of SSIDs
didn't launch it either. This one had a static IP address so it may be
related to the bugs reported here.

3) Adding a static IP to the list is a user nightmare. First off, the
Add button doesn't launch a separate dialog with entries for the
address/netmask/gateway. Instead you have to click in the listing
window and type over the blue areas. It took me quite a while to figure
this out. Plus you cannot navigate across fields in that list with the
tab button. You must enter an item like the address, then leave the
list, then go to the next item. This whole process needs a simple Add
dialog box.

I would say that fixing problems with knetworkmanager should be a
critical priority for either the KDE devs or the Ubuntu devs. Problems
in a function as critical as user-level network management will
absolutely discourage anyone converting from another platform like
Windows to Kubuntu.

I'd also like to see a simple method at installation to enable the
network connection during boot rather than requiring user intervention.
I'm sure I could figure out how to do this from browsing the Web and
editing config files, but it should be much easier to configure by
default. Not everyone running Ubuntu is using a laptop; for people on
wired networks, or people with static addresses, the current system of
pushing network connections to the user level makes things more
difficult than they need to be. If I were in an office setting, I'd
expect my computer to connect to the network upon boot, not require me
to run some application from the desktop.

2009-03-28 Thread Peter Lemieux
Sorry, I forgot one more complaint. Where are the error reports for
knetworkmanager? When a connection fails, you don't get any feedback on
why it failed.

Just  a note that /etc/init.d/udev restart does not fix this problem;
only stopping and starting the service removes the read-only problem.
