[Bug 1835530] Re: kwin-addons: after installing any third-party task-switcher, all non-compiz switchers error

[Bug 672052] Re: ata errors leading to system hang: "soft resetting link" repeated many times before hang
I haven't seen the bug since I reported the workaround -- simply because I haven't tried to reproduce it, having maintained the workaround on my home machine. I'll try to get a test done asap -- though the test may prove rather insignificant since I've switched to Linux Mint 12 after: a) the lack of response on this and other critical bugs that I filed against Ubuntu packages (no offence intended: I tend to get apathetic about being a good user and reporting bugs and trying to be helpful when every bug I submit is only examined 1 or 2 releases later. Again, no offence: I'm not starting a fight here, I'm not trying to flame (though I'm sure it seems that way). I just start to give up). b) Unity. Yes, that famous flogging horse. Not at all that Unity was created or even set as the default -- even on upgrade! -- more that the implementation of Unity broke everything else I liked, mainly through patches on GTK which broke heaps of the apps I wanted to use and every other desktop environment that I tried at the time. GNOME 3 is no better, and I'm now, sadly, using KDE which, slow and unresponsive as it gets, at least does (mostly) what I want it to do. Anyway, this isn't really the right place for this and my apathy sets in again. I'll report back on the current state of this bug in Linux Mint 12, which will probably still be relevant to Ubuntu because of the upstream package chain. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/672052 Title: ata errors leading to system hang: "soft resetting link" repeated many times before hang To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/672052/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 777576] [NEW] Desktop effects broken in Natty (upgrade and new install)
Public bug reported: Upon upgrading to Natty (and I've observed this on a clean install), when I log in to the "Ubuntu Classic" desktop and enable Desktop Cube (which requires the OpenGL plugin) for compiz, I get a session with no window borders. If I run, from a console: gtk-window-decorator --replace the process seems to hang (strace also shows no activity after a second or two, ie no event processing or anything). Running: emerald --replace crashes. Steps to reproduce: 1) upgrade to Natty (or install new) 2) install CompizConfig Settings Manager (ccsm) 3) run ccsm 4) select OpenGL plugin (or Desktop Cube which will require the OpenGL plugin) 5) resolve any keyboard or plugin conflicts (Desktop Cube conflicts with Desktop Wall, for example) 6) plugins are applied, window borders disappear (though the desktop cube effect is working) 7) logging in again produces a session with no window borders 8) running "gtk-window-decorator --replace" from a console hangs 9) running "emerald --replace" from a console crashes 10) running "metacity --replace" from a console regains a useful windowed desktop Note that when there were no window borders, I could find no gtk-window- decorator or emerald process in the current process list. It seems that the issue is antagonised by my external 2TB drive which was connected on eSata. Powering off and reconnecting the drive via USB (at least 2x slower when working with files!), the problem goes away. The messages can be triggered by copying to the device. The drive is not a problem though -- palimpsest reports the drive is OK and, as I've reported above, connecting on USB makes the problem go away (and the problem wasn't present in prior revisions of the kernel). This wasn't a problem before 10.10; 9.10 worked fine with this through several iterations of the kernel. It seems that a kernel update around 10.10 has caused the problem to rear its head. Please advise if I can furnish any more info. I'm considering trying a vanilla, latest kernel from kernel.org compiled for my system to see if the problem is there too -- please advise if doing so would be helpful as I'll do so sooner rather than later. Re: [Bug 655351] Re: [ALC888 - HDA ATI SB] Headphones don't mute master sound
I'm obviously confused about the jack colors ): However, examining general sound equipment usage: Line-out *shouldn't be amplified*. Speaker-out should. Line-out should be used by people who have dedicated amplifiers (ie, me: I should be using it, but I don't -- I haven't stumbled across not having a line-out on my current hardware because I like having the volume control "just work". I do, however, remember jacking into the wrong port on a prior card (I think it was an SB) and getting a very low volume with no amp, finding out it was line-out and switching to speaker-out). Speaker-out should be used for simple speakers which require amplification or lazy people like me who like using software volume controls. So it wouldn't surprise me, since I've obviously gotten the colors wrong (or misread things) that most audio cards don't have a real line-out -- they just have a speaker-out. So, whilst I'm certainly not picking a fight with you (since this is apparently an upstream decision), I can still come back to my original points: 1) headphones muting the speakers used to work pre-9.04 (so we have an established user expectation even under Ubuntu) 2) headphones mute the built-in speakers of my laptop (windows and ubuntu) -- why the inconsistent behaviour for a desktop? Just because the speakers in the laptop are bolted into the frame of the machine? What an arbitrary 3) Windows gets it right: plugging in headphones mutes external speakers -- it's convenient. Though I think you can disable that feature if you want. I'm told by a person at work that his Mac does the same. 4) It seems to be the expectation of the user -- note the number of bug reports against this design choice. Again, I'm really not fighting with you on this -- picking a fight with you would be kinda pointless here (: However, I would like to ask you for some help: where would I lodge this as a request upstream? ALSA devs? It's easy to report an ubuntu bug/request with apport -- not so easy to know what to do if the problem isn't Ubuntu-specific. I don't mind taking this further -- there seems to be enough general confusion over the matter that there might actually be some consideration put into my request (or am I just being naive and optimistic?) Re: [Bug 655351] Re: [ALC888 - HDA ATI SB] Headphones don't mute master sound
But you see now, that thread makes sense: the line-out shouldn't be muted. Speaker out should. The jack ports are: light-blue for line-out and green for speaker out. I'm using green ): Should I re-open this? I just had the correct behaviour under windows -- was playing Borderlands with headphones and only realised that my amp volume was still on when I rebooted and got Ubuntu event sounds. -d On 6 October 2010 20:26, David Henningsson <655...@bugs.launchpad.net>wrote: > devel/2010-August/030071.html > -- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- The competent programmer is fully aware of the limited size of his own skull. Re: [Bug 655351] Re: [ALC888 - HDA ATI SB] Headphones don't mute master sound
It's weird that it's "by design" from a user perspective: 1) That Other OS (Windows) mutes the speaker output when jacking in headphones on the same machine 2) pre 9.04, so did Ubuntu. Now I have to make sure that I turn down the hardware volume on my plugged-in speakers whenever I jack in headphones -- what do people do when they don't have hardware volume controls on their cheap-ass external speakers? I'm not having a go at you -- I just don't understand the "by design" decision. Re: [Bug 655351] Re: [ALC888 - HDA ATI SB] Headphones don't mute master sound
I'm not sure if I'm going to answer your question correctly, so here goes: I don't have internal speakers -- in that I don't have any speakers actually inside my machine. Not sure if that's what you're asking? I do use the pcm out (green jack) at the back of the machine to feed into powered creative 4.1 speakers (but I only use the first stereo jack -- the speaker set will automatically duplicate front to back when only given one input and I have never managed to reliably get 4.1 sound on things that support it as well as getting music apps (like audacious) to output to both the front and back speakers -- so I just leave it in "stereo"). [Bug 655351] [NEW] [HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB] Headphones don't mute master sound
Public bug reported: When plugging in headphones, the master output is not muted any more (It used to mute prior to 9.04 if memory serves correctly). This first appeared on my upgrade to 9.04 (yes, that long ago). I've been attached to bug #464863 since then because it looks like the same problem. That bug has been closed out (I think due to inactivity) and I've been asked to log a new one (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa- driver/+bug/464863/comments/11). So here it is. [Bug 311581] Re: MASTER Network Manager integrated ppp support - should allow the configuration of dial up modems
Well put, Devarshi I think that what you're saying was the original intent of the bug report. Whilst it sucks that establishing a ppp link is more of a mission than it needs to be, it sucks a whole lot more that because NM can't tell that the user is in fact online, it misinforms client applications of an offline status -- changing their functionality (Firefox won't even try to get a page; Pidgin won't even let you attempt to go online, etc). IIRC, this was why I ended up uninstalling NM (replacing with wicd). Sure there are some other work-arounds (Firefox has a config tweak, for example), but the path of least resistance was simply to give up on NM. -- MASTER Network Manager integrated ppp support - should allow the configuration of dial up modems https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/311581 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 311581] Re: MASTER Network Manager integrated ppp support - should allow the configuration of dial up modems
Mathieu, I understand that technology *can* have a role to play (though I think that role is not as major as you might think here). I also appreciate that this is a level-headed discussion. Please understand I come from a place of passion about Linux-based operating systems, in particular Ubuntu. If you don't mind a bit of a read (and I hope this is a reasonable place to make this post) then please also understand that my frustration stemmed from the following: * _many_ 3G modems (and, with that term, I incorporate GPRS and EDGE, since the tech involved is often transparent to the user -- the modem is simply supplied by a wireless telecoms company on a contract basis) are correctly identified and work with the usb-serial kernel module, producing what, for all intents and purposes, looks "like" a serial modem to client apps. Even more of these modems can be "made to work" by getting their vendor/hardware id's forced at the time of module load -- not trivial for a newbie, but fairly simple to do (all things considered) when following some kind of instructions to edit default module parameters or try out with a modprobe line. The point is that as soon as usb-serial has recognised this device, the actual establishing of a connection via pppd is trival to script from a dev's point of view -- I would have expected the basics of ppp network setup to be available. In other words, the hardware here is not the issue. Whether you have a HUAWEI or a cheap Siemens modem, whether you use one of the zillions of phones out there which present a modem interface via cable, establishing a connection to the internet should be really simple with these devices -- and is, if you have a background in Linux networking. It's just that the common user is left out in the cold -- as is the lazy expert (: * Even if ppp connections can't be configured through NM (as with wicd, another fine lan/wireless network helper), the problem remains that the client-space applications all believe NM on the opinion it has with respect to "being online". The general idea of being able to help the user with an online status is neat -- just not well thought-out if it doesn't cater for one of the most common methods for connecting to the internet -- most especially at the time of the original post and my "+1". Now that wireless routers and DSL are becoming more of the "norm", the importance of this issue may actually, if anything, be dwindling a little. But I would still count it as important. * A larger issue is that gnome-ppp (or similar) isn't installed by default. NM is -- and could fill this gap. So the user gets a dvd/cd from a friend/colleague who is a FLOSS-pusher, installs (or hits the "try me out" option) and finds that something which was really trivial to do under her other installed OS is not immediately available to her -- and, as far as I can see, for no particularly good reason (yes, there's dev-time -- and yes, I should be putting my programming skills where my mouth is!) when the establishment of a ppp connection over a serial device has been the granddaddy of internet connection methods -- and typically something Linux-based systems actually do *better*: faster, better intrinsic hardware support (ie often no need to install extra 3rd-party drivers), more reliably -- in my opinion. * NM offers "Mobile Broadband" and "DSL" connections but won't let the user tweak the devices to use -- it's just like NM is so close, but missing that crucial cigar -- and I can't rationalise why. Perhaps someone else can? -- MASTER Network Manager integrated ppp support - should allow the configuration of dial up modems https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/311581 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 311581] Re: MASTER Network Manager integrated ppp support - should allow the configuration of dial up modems
The problem wasn't the 3G device. The problem was quite simply that I couldn't instruct NetworkManager to start a ppp session with a serial (in this case, usb-serial) modem. It doesn't matter what the underlying tech of the modem was -- the initial bug report and the "me too" that I chipped in were due to the issue of not being able to configure a good old pppd session for a serial device, which wouldn't have been a problem if there was just something as simple as a dialog which asks for the device, dial number and user info. Do you understand the source of the frustration? It's no biggie if *I* can configure via /etc/network/interfaces, but my technophobe sister or mother wouldn't be able to do that. An interface like that of gnome-ppp would have been great since NetworkManager seemed to promise to be able to configure ALL network interfaces and then just failed to deliver. And, to be quite honest, for most people with 3G modems, /etc/network/interfaces _is_still_the_only_way_to_configure_pppd_for_that_interface_. "NetworkManager will just ignore devices set in /etc/network/interfaces and assume they are UP" Not when I used it. Hence my chipping in. Everything which was supposedly NM-aware was convinced that I was offline: pidgin, empathy, firefox. [Bug 311581] Re: MASTER Network Manager integrated ppp support - should allow the configuration of dial up modems
Thanks Devarshi It's just sad that it's taken almost TWO YEARS for such a basic requirement to be taken seriously. In the mean time, I no longer use a 3G connection -- technology, it seems, advances quicker than those who would program for it. I'm sure, however, that the general need for the requirement hasn't gone away. Most especially because it could have just been a wrapper around a shell-script using pppd or even a gksudo'd interface to /etc/network/interfaces (which is pretty-much all I did to solve my issue when I had it). Not rocket science and definitely a stumbling block for adoption amongst the less tech-savvy masses, especially in our netbook-hungry market, where 3G is a totally viable option for getting online. -- MASTER Network Manager integrated ppp support - should allow the configuration of dial up modems https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/311581 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 554204] [NEW] gvfs to smb location is horribly slow
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gvfs The short info: Ubuntu release: 9.10 gvfs-backend version: 1.4.1-0ubuntu1 expected behaviour: copy as fast as if mounting via mount.cifs and copying to that mounted location experienced behaviour: copying via gvfs was significantly slower (at best, around 40% the speed I could achieve via a mount.cifs call and copying into the mounted tree). The ramble: This looks a bit like #186461 but I hesitate to post there since that bug was reported (and supposedly fixed) about 2 years ago, on a very much older version of gvfs. However, the numbers don't lie: I have a wireless network at home which isn't the fastest in the world considering that I have a lot of concrete between nodes. I recently got a media player which has NAS functionality and had to wait approximately 72 hours for 160 gig to be copied down to it at the amazing rate of about 500-700 KiB/s. I thought it was just my slow network until I tried mounting the remote share into my local filesystem and copying that way (through nautilus as well) -- for other reasons I wanted a permanent mount instead of just using gvfs -- and found that I could consistently copy at about 1.8MiB/s ! The only explanation I could have for this is a lot of small network calls that gvfs is making which are latent -- hence sucking more over my not-too-fantastic wlan. 1 is correct -- but it seems to be the same as 2 since the dvdrw was erased from the right-click menu that pops up on the desktop in GNOME -- afaik, this invokes brasero? 2 was for media that wasn't blank -- Nautilus correctly mounted the media but brasero didn't seem to handle with the fact that the media was mounted -- until I dismounted it myself. Re: [Bug 514782] Re: brasero fails to recognise dvdrw drive and/or media
Hm I'm afraid I'm probably not as helpful here... Well, for starters, I don't know if, by "at other times" you mean *any* other occurrences -- in which case, I do remember the having this once before, but I can't remember the exact circumstances. ): I've had a few other oddities though: I use a DVD+RW to watch avi content on a divx/xvid-capable dvd player in my living room, so my habit is to start a new compilation, select burn, and select "erase this disc" from the warning which pops up about the disc not having enough space on it for my compilation. I've had the burn process just halt there before (after "erasing", before starting data write), not advancing, but I don't know if that's related because cancelling and restarting the burn worked out OK. Also, this isn't the same "no disc" behaviour, so probably not related... I've also had the case where brasero hangs on a burn or refuses to see the disc if it's mounted (and nautilus is auto-mounting as I insert) -- but again, this isn't the same issue (and isn't reliably reproducible). Also, I've noticed that the erase via this process is almost instantaneous -- it used to take a couple of seconds (and, in fact, just blanking a disc, without writing, does take a couple of seconds). The write does complete though, so I'm assuming someone figured out a quicker method (such as just ignore the discs contents and write over it forcibly or similar) On the other hand, if you mean "does this happen when I blank other media, such as CD-RW", I don't know -- the last time I blanked a CD-RW on my machine was a very long time ago. [Bug 514782] Re: brasero fails to recognise dvdrw drive and/or media
As a followup: After burning the same DVD+RW media with K3b, Brasero now recognises the media and seems to want to allow me to burn onto it. I don't understand what is so special about burning onto it with K3b. Blanking it under Win7 with CDBurnderXP didn't change anything before this. The only thing worse than an arbitrary bug is one which is not reliably reproducible. [Bug 514782] [NEW] brasero fails to recognise dvdrw drive and/or media
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: brasero As of about yesterday, Brasero no longer recognises the DVD+RW drive (or perhaps it's the media?) that I've been using for ages. I've installed K3b, and that works just fine. This seems to have started since I blanked a DVD+RW disc in the drive from right-clicking it on the desktop and selecting "erase". Win7 has no problem with the drive or media either. I would gladly provide more information if anyone can tell me what would be useful. [Bug 508392] [NEW] compiz crashes regularly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: compiz For about the last week, I have often come back to my machine after leaving it for some time (screensaver has kicked in -- even perhaps the powersaving on the monitor has kicked in) and I find that my GNOME desktop has fallen back on the non-accellerated window manager. Running compiz --replace restarts the window manager and I can carry on as per usual. I've never actually witnessed the crash -- I'm just assuming the crash since I leave the machine with compiz running and come back to no compiz. This problem only started to manifest in the last week or so -- about the amount of time since the last kernel update. I'm running NVIDIA 195 drivers (I have a GTX260 which doesn't seem to like the default 185 drivers: machine locks up a lot with that config, especially if I run a GL-enabled app (ie, game) in Compiz). The 190 drivers were working well for me, but I tried updating to the 195 drivers to see if that was the issue -- the compiz crashes continue however. I would appreciate any ideas on where to gather more information to make this report more useful. [Bug 454879] Re: Applications using libsdl1.2-alsa randomly use 100% cpu and have broken sound playback
It might be worthwhile, since the Ubuntu devs are adamant that Ubuntu users should be stuck with pulseaudio (which is horribly broken and obviously can't emulate alsa like it should) to change package dependencies for games like hedgewars to the pulse version of libsdl. I mean, if you're going to force a point, force it all the way. Your "average user" would try to install hedgewars and end up blaming the game -- or worse, "Linux", saying that "Linux is broken". All I'm saying is that there is perhaps a bug to log against the package here: if Ubuntu is going to stay on the road of pulseaudio, perhaps the install candidate for libsdl should be the pulseaudio one by default? -- Applications using libsdl1.2-alsa randomly use 100% cpu and have broken sound playback https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/454879 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 421444] Re: Cannot find manual for System -> Administration -> Authorizations
@Martin von Wittch: I beg to differ. This is quite a high bug since it precludes simple things like CPU scaling and mounting/dismounting internal drives without annoying authorisation requests. Something which makes the user curse the desktop because it's difficult (or impossible, for the layman user who is afraid of the console) because her life is made more difficult for quite arbitrary "security" settings is quite important -- most especially if that user had the ability to sort out the issue in a prior release. This is just one of the many scissor-stabs (deeper and deadlier than a paper-cut) which is making the community start to wonder about the direction that Ubuntu is going with the release of Karmic. -- Cannot find manual for System -> Administration -> Authorizations https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/421444 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 487229] Re: brasero stalls when attempting to write to mounted media
I've managed to make this problem go away by moving the following dirs and letting them be re-created: ~/.local ~/.gconf ~/.gconfd They were around from when I upgraded from Jaunty. I'll see if I can't re-instate them and track down the issue. [Bug 487229] Re: brasero stalls when attempting to write to mounted media
It seems this may be related to all of the prior issues I've had with the upgrade to Karmic (and the subsequent reload with re-use of my ~): it seems that there's something problematic in my .gconf, .local or .gconfd from the Jaunty days which doesn't play nice with Karmic gnome stuff: I backed up and removed all of these three and found that this problem, amongst others, seems to be gone now. Of course, I had to set up my desktop the way I like it again, but at least things all work. I;m quite willing to provide the before and after snapshots of these dirs in case anyone cares to track down the issue. I would imagine that the issues I've had and the resolution I've had would be not dissimilar to the issues and required resolution for so many people struggling with the Jaunty to Karmic upgrade. -- brasero stalls when attempting to write to mounted media https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/487229 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 487229] [NEW] brasero stalls when attempting to write to mounted media
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: brasero When attempting to re-write DVD+RW media that was automatically mounted by Nautilus (I assume), brasero asks if the user would like to erase the existing media. If the user accepts the erase, brasero stalls, leaving a dialog on screen which states "getting size". If I unmount the media first (eg, through nautilus), then brasero performs the erase and goes on to do the write operation. Expected: when asked if I would like to erase and re-write media, if I seleect "erase", the media should be automatically unmounted and erased. Happened: brasero stalls, claiming that it's "getting size". The burn operation isn't even started. [Bug 484941] [NEW] nvidia-glx-185 graphics corruption whilst using compiz and other gl-based apps
Public bug reported: hardware: XFX gtx260 nvidia-glx-180 used to work just fine under 9.04. Upgrade to 9.10 (and finally, out of sheer frustration, re-install to 9.10) saw the introduction of this bug. An application which makes use of GL under Compiz causes graphics corruption and instability with Compiz. Certain textures (read: most icons as well as some window internals, eg Firefox page display) are replaced with corrupted messes instead of their correct contents. Originally, I figured this was a Compiz issue, but IT'S NOT. Upgrading my nvidia drivers to to version 190.42-0ubuntu1~karmic~nvidiavdpauppa2 by using the ppa at: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/nvidia-vdpau/ppa/ubuntu karmic main causes the problem to cease. I've been running these drivers for a little under a week and the corruption issue which would show up from a GL-based screensaver within a day of a X restart is no more. So I'm quite confident that the 185 drivers in 9.10 at the moment (185.18.36-0ubuntu9) are the problem. [Bug 438873] Re: Compiz crashes after leaving a fullscreen application
Ok, so I can't install the 173 drivers -- which would explain why jocky only gives me the option of the 185 drivers... But the 190 drivers from the ppa mentioned at: http://www.ubuntugeek.com /howto-install-nvidia-190-25-beta-drivers-in-ubuntu- jauntyintrepidhardy.html are giving me more joy -- I left my machine for the day and came back to *no* graphics corruption (something new for my Karmic system). So perhaps the problem isn't compiz -- *perhaps* the problem is just simply badly QA'd proprietary drivers with no backup to previously known good drivers (ie, the 180 series). -- Compiz crashes after leaving a fullscreen application https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/438873 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 438873] Re: Compiz crashes after leaving a fullscreen application
I would imagine that my problem is related here: the OpenGL screensaver BlinkBox has, on numerous occasions, appeared to cause Compiz to freak out and die after a period of usage (ie, not immediately when the screensaver starts up, but after a while, when I come back to my machine, it appears to be locked up). Sometimes I can get my machine back into a decent state by turning off compiz and turning it back on again. Sometimes X is so unresponsive that I have to restart gdm. Once, the whole machine appeared to be completely locked up and I had to reboot. I didn't have this issue with Jaunty -- but it may be related rather to the drivers? [Bug 477820] [NEW] wicd post-install scripts fail if user already a member of netdev group
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: udev When installing wicd, the installer is asked what system users to add to the netdev group. If a selected user already belongs to the netdev group, the post-install scripts fail and the package is left in a broken state. Attempting to reinstall causes the same error over and over. Technically, the addition of the user to the group "fails" -- but it's only because the user is already in the group. The only workaround I've found is to manually remove the user from the netdev group and re-run "apt-get install -f". I noticed this during a dist-upgrade which had been interrupted by other package installation failures, but it would also apply to anyone who did something like: apt-get install --reinstall wicd 1.6.1-3ubuntu1 (say after something in the package was accidentally deleted) Source package: wicd Package version: 1.6.1-3ubuntu1 Expected: installer shouldn't fail if the user(s) is/are already (a) member(s) of the netdev group -- installation should continue regardless. Happened: users already in the netdev group which the post-install script tries to add to said netdev group cause the post-install scripts to fail and apt to believe that the package is not installed. The package will never be properly installed until there is a manual intervention to remove the user(s) from the netdev group and attempt the install again (dpkg --purge may also work -- I haven't tested this) ** Affects: udev (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- wicd post-install scripts fail if user already a member of netdev group https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/477820 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 466275] Re: After Jaunty upgrade to Karmic USB hard and flash drives don't automatically mount or appear anywhere
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 463347 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/463347 I don't know if this is a proper dupe of #463347. The reporters there are referring to udev issues, which, afaik, should end up with the device nodes for the inserted media not being allocated? I'm getting the same issue (with the same work-around: launch palimsest and re-plug the external storage device -- I'm hoping this will work for optical media too, since putting a DVD in my drive doesn't result in something showing up in my Places menu, and double-clicking my drive in the "Computer" view in Nautilus doesn't attempt to mount the drive either), but I do see messages in dmesg referring to the device being plugged in and a /dev/sdXN node being allocated to it. It's just not showing up in Nautilus. Dolphin, however, *does* show the device and will let me mount and browse it. All of this makes me think the issue at hand here is not the death of udev by fd leak, but something either in gvfs or nautilus. -- After Jaunty upgrade to Karmic USB hard and flash drives don't automatically mount or appear anywhere https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/466275 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 463347] Re: devices not detected -- too many open files
I think there may be more than one cause for this problem. My udev isn't showing mad numbers of fds left open (though the scripted test case to reproduce the problem noted above by Martin Pitt *does* cause an increase in open file handles for udevd). WRT bug 466275, which has been marked as a potential dupe of this one, I have the same experience -- running palimpsest causes the removable drive, on next insert, to be recognised by gnome / gvfs / whatever is ignoring the drive. However, inserting the drive *does* produce device nodes -- and it's my understanding that that is part of what udev does? If so, then there's something else which is causing the drive(s) not to appear in the Nautilus places bar. Interestingly enough, other file managers (Dolphin, in particular), *do* see the drive as an unmounted volume which it will mount when the item is clicked. -- devices not detected -- too many open files https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/463347 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 379659] [NEW] gnome-screensaver causes system hang
Public bug reported: This is not a re-post of 341129 or 107504 (I've checked them out). One refers to a problem during system suspend (my problem is on a desktop, no suspend) and the other refers to bad NVidia drivers, which the rest of my report should cancel out. Gnome-screensaver was working OK for me with "blank screen". Switching to "blinkbox", a fairly undemaning GL-pbased screensaver, causes the system to hang completely when the screensaver is automatically invoked at the timeout. Note that the setup and preview screens for this screensaver worked fine. The problem is reproducable -- but it's quite difficult to get any kind of logging when the only recourse was a reboot. Other GL-based apps work fine, and I'm running Compiz. Also, replacing gnome-screensaver with xscreensaver and selecting the same screensaver ("blinkbox") does not reproduce the problem. The issue must therefore be something in gnome-screensaver. The issue is a show-stopper. I can't seem to get out of the problem without a hard or reset. Right-clicking on the throbber/handle does nothing: the preferences dialog does not appear. Restarting gnome-panel with a "killall gnome-panel" from a console causes the applets to re-appear in working order. [Bug 311581] Re: MASTER Network Manager integrated ppp support - should allow the configuration of dial up modems
This is quite an important "wish" Not only does NetworkManager not provide an interface for ppp connection configuration, but integration with GNOME doesn't pick up that a ppp connection has been made. Thus all "aware" applications (firefox, epiphany, pidgin come to mind) "think" that the user is offline. This is confusing behaviour (in the least) for the user: she is online, but her applications all tell her that she isn't. Not only that, but she had to either install the old network-admin tool to actually configure the connection (or she had to bribe a willing geek to do it for her). To add insult to injury, the latest kernel build in Jaunty as of writing (2.6.28-11-generic) has usbserial built as a module, so the exotic modem (HUAWEI, or, the latest blossoming provider in .za, NeoTel) isn't recognised and the module parameters that her geek friend set up for her don't work any more. Now she has to learn how to hack the grub boot parameters. To be quite honest, including "detection for an online state" without ppp support (the most common method for a home user to connect to the internet) is a usability FAIL. This has to be sorted out before the official Jaunty release if the community is not to alienate the less tech-savvy of its user base. On the same note, I would like to see the vendor/product ids for common "exotic" usb modems included in the kernel, even if just by way of Ubuntu patchset. These usbserial modems are common, like grasshoppers on the savanna. People are getting them with cellphone contracts and newer ISPs. The usbserial module is known to work with them. [Bug 316500] Re: WODIM refused to blank CD-RW media
Thank you for pointing me at an old article about how to report bugs. Fortunately for me, I am a software developer myself, and I have an understanding of what is required to report a bug (and, sometimes, to my delight, how to fix one too). Unfortunately for this bug report, I did provide all of the information that I was privy to, with the knowledge I had available to me. I also bothered to read the Ubuntu Launchpad guidelines for reporting a bug, hence the "Requested Info" section (which I thought was a bit sparse, but hey, that's what was requested). Perhaps the Launchpad needs a feature added: "how to get extra information pertaining to this specific package which will help the developers to resolve your issue". Obviously, this would be different for different packages. Once again, despite your attempt at diplomacy, I don't appreciate a glossed-over RTFM. Thanks also for pointing me at the Ubuntu Code of Conduct, so that I may remain more diplomatic in the face of adversity, though tuly the only true disrespect was shown for the Nero development team, which is neither here nor there in the scheme of this bug report. The rest is true: wodim has provided endless issues for countless users, and provided myself with a most impressive (but ultimately useless) stack of shiny coasters in the past, and shown the ubiquitous desire to not function at all until the path was paved by schily tools. I can, however, glean the one item of actual value from your response: what information would assist you in resolving this bug (running wodim -dd -V). I certainly do understand the benefit of having more information reported for the resolution of a bug. It would be super-cool if that kind of requirement could have been presented to me at the time of the bug report -- I might have actually provided it. Should the problem recur, I will be most delighted to attach more information. It might also be in the interests of the wodim development team to examine Mr Schilling's work -- the problem in wodim might become glaringly obvious. I have a feeling that the schily cdrecord prods the drive in some way that wodim doesn't. Since wodim is just a fork from a prior version, surely one could diff the two trees to find out what cleverness Mr Schiling is up to (though he has alluded to permission issues in online postings)? I know it's a tedious job, but the dividends might be worth it. If the above comments are too inflammatory, please just ignore them. I have done my best to edit out some of my more biting comments, in the interests of actually trying to achieve a constructive end-goal. -- WODIM refused to blank CD-RW media https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/316500 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 316500] [NEW] WODIM is horribly broken -- seems Schily is right!
Public bug reported: What happened: WODIM refused to blank CD-RW media UNTIL i did so with official cdrtools from Schily. What I expected to happen: I expected WODIM to blank and write my CD-RW's. Silly me. How to repeat: Not sure. Since once using the offical cdrtools package, my problem seems to have vanished. To be honest though, I had some major issues trying to burn a CD-R the other day, and made a rather impressive selection of coasters. THANKS, WODIM. The long story: I've been reading up on the debate between Schily and the Debian dev team -- I have to admit I was biased from the start, thinking that Schily was just pompous twit. My most sincere apologies to Mr Schily. WODIM, installed in Intrepid, refused to blank CD-RW media, alternately claiming that the device was in use and that it was unable to open the scsi bus. The device WASN'T in use (DEFINITELY NOT mounted, or anything else running against it). Rebooting (hey, it fixes Windows ;p ) didn't help -- the problem persisted. Note that I also tried cdrskin, which is supposed to be a thin wrapper aroung libburn, with the same results -- the device was permanently "locked". Note that this particular machine has been upgraded (not reloaded) at least 3 times (7.10-8.04-8.10), that I can remember. Perhaps more. And it's only been in 8.10 where this has become an issue. I downloaded Schily's 2.01.01a55 version of cdrecord, compile and installed. K3b (yes, I use GNOME, but there is no burning GUI that I have ever used (*nix or win32) which can compete with k3b, except perhaps older versions of Nero (<6), before the dev team hired a pack of turd-throwing, crack-smoking chimps to redesign what WAS a clear, usable interface) picked it up without configuration (huzzah!), and I could once again blank and write CD-RW media WITHOUT ISSUE. Oddly enough, after having dispelled the bad juju, wodim decided to co-operate, and will now blank and write CD-RW media. Not good enough for me -- I'm leaving my Schily tools as the default in k3b. Ubuntu already breaks the "total freedom" concept of Debian by providing items such as the NVIDIA/ATI binary blobs and official Firefox artwork (to name just the most commonly-known culprits). I have no problem with this as it means that the average Joe user can get a working Linux machine without having to rise to the status of 1337 h4x0r; this is good for Linux and the user in general. My question then, is why are we still subscribing to the broken wodim? I'm all for the Free alternative, but I rather subscribe to Linus' approach: "free" or not, the BEST solution always wins. And it's not like Schily's cdrtools isn't actually free -- it's just not GPL, but I have other licenses which live side-by-side on my system (MPL, GPL, BSD, to name just a few). I just don't get how this made it past QA (and I have a very high opinion of Ubuntu QA). For a non-tech user out there, this would have been a show-stopper. A "switch back to that crappy Other OS" moment.
