[Bug 185986] Re: WebDAV extremely slow

2017-12-23 Thread hasi
I observed something interesting. I am running KDE, and both the
konqueror (still running KDE 4) and dolphin (KDE plasma 5) file managers
have their own webdav implementation, which is much faster. Just by
putting "webdav://" into the address bar followed by the address, I can
directly access the pages. And it is blazingly fast! I would say at
least one order of magnitude faster than mounting the same server via
davfs2 and accessing it this way.

The advantage of this test is that I can access the very same webdav
server from the same machine in both ways. Therefore, I can rule out
speed limitations on the server side, performance limitations on my
machine, or network speed as reasons for the davfs2 slowness. However,
while the "webdav://" implementation is good to browse files, it is not
a full replacement for a mount. For instance, when I click on a document
to open it, a temporary file will be downloaded to a temporary folder.
So when I save an edited document, it will only change the temporary
file, but not change the file on the WebDAV server.

What would be ideal is if the developers of the "webdav://"
implementation at KDE turned it into a fuse implementation of a file
system! But I have not yet found out who the developers are.

Also seeing this on 14.04. This is on a large university network. Some comments
above suggest that this is due to Macs, others suggest that this is perhaps due
to Windows 10. Any further insights?
This pretty much makes my logs unusable.

I just put a script into /etc/cron.hourly/ that will copy the current

[Bug 823011] Re: Webcam (0c45:62c0, uvcvideo) doesn't work with Natty kernel.

2011-10-07 Thread hasi
After reading comment #6, I want to provide more details:

1) After upgrading to natty, I noticed that the camera was sometimes not
recognized any more. It got worse until the camera was not recognized at
all any more.

2) Since the camera had been continuously working under lucid (and b/c I
rarely had hardware problems in the past), I first thought that this had
to be something related to the version of the OS and first blamed natty.
(Which is why I posted here in the first place.)

3) Then, I decided to study this further and booted into lucid from a
USB stick and found that the camera was not working as well, at which
point I started to consider a hardware problem

4) I started pressing against my laptop lid in areas surrounding the
camera, and I bent the lid there. In some cases, I would end up in a
configuration in which the camera was recognized. So I concluded that
this was likely some problem of an intermittent/broken electrical
contact.

5) Next day, I took the laptop lid apart. A piece of sheet metal holding
the camera was deformed. This must have been from a previous accident
which was professionally (but obviously not perfectly) repaired. I tried
to bend the metal in place. I also took the camera out and played with
its connection cable a bit at the connector. While the system was
disassembled I booted up and found that the camera was recognized. I re-
assembled the system, and ever since then, the camera is always
recognized and working perfectly.

6) My guess would be that either the metal plate was shorting a contact
on the camera board, or the electrical connection at the connector was
bad, which got fixed just by playing around with it.

[Bug 375690] Re: [ooo-build] OOo 3.1 needs KDE4 integration

2009-09-09 Thread hasi
I found several bugs in openoffice.org-kde (karmic 32bit, all updates as
of today applied). For instance the open/save dialog always starts at
the /home directory. Starting in /home/user would be much better.
Even when I open a file in a certain directory and hit Save As it
defaults to /home. In this case, it should default to the directory of
the open file. I also found that the extension is not automatically
added, even when the corresponding box in the save dialog is checked.
Both the open and the save dialogs have check boxes without any text
next to them.

Should I open a new bug(s) for this?

[Bug 420924] Re: suspend resume fails in kubuntu

2009-09-06 Thread hasi
I see it on a Dell Latitude E6400 (Intel GMA 4500 graphics). I can
confirm that the problem does not occur when compositing is turned off.

One more observation: the problem seems to progress and get worse after
resume. Initially, I can use the keyboard and mouse to operate what's
left with some functionlity (clicking menus, for instance). However
after doing this for a little while, this doesn't work either, and the
UI freezes completely, to the extent that I can't even bring up a
terminal by doing Ctrl-Alt-F1. I saw this several times.

@Joe:
If you can live without compositing, just switch off Desktop Effects, and
suspend might work in your case as well. If one wanted to make a fancier
workaround, one could change the scripts executed before sleep and after resume
to switch compositing off before sleeping and turn in on after resume. For me,
compositing is really not that critical. I am happy to use KDE w/o compositing
until (hopefully) someone more capable than me is able to find and fix the real
problem.

[Bug 420924] Re: suspend resume fails in kubuntu

2009-09-06 Thread hasi
I just found that when I successfully resume (compositing off) two
applications (widgets) are no longer running: kmix and knetworkmanager.
They can easily be restarted manually. However, this should be ironed
out before release.

I am not sure if this is related to the behavior described here or if
this should be a new bug. Anyone with an insight let me know. I am not
sure if this occured before the Aug26 updates.

@Joe:

I also saw that suspend worked WITH compositing in Alpha4. And I totally
agree that it's about time to get decent compositing performance with
the Intel graphics cards. I am extremely happy about the new Intel
drivers in general; great performance!

What I was not sure about was whether kmix and knetworkmanager were also
killed in the standby/resume cycle in Alpha4 as I described in post #9.

[Bug 377333] Re: KDE Printer Configuration applet is broken

2009-06-18 Thread hasi
OK, I do have the applet (at least the icon for it)! (Maybe it's because we had
different upgrade histories?)
However, when I try to open it, the window says:

The service 'Printer Configuration' does not provide an interface
'KCModule' with keyword 'system-config-printer-kde/kcm-scpk.py'The
factory does not support creating components of the specified type.

Possible reasons:

o An error occurred during your last KDE upgrade leaving an orphaned control
module
o You have old third party modules lying around.

Check these points carefully and try to remove the module mentioned in
the error message. If this fails, consider contacting your distributor
or packager.

This symptom is identical to what's reported in Bug #348704. However
the reported workaround for this bug 348704 does not work in my case,
which suggests that I am having a different problem. That's why I am now
looking into this bug (377333). If I have yet a different disease, I'll
have to file a new one.

[Bug 325252] Re: Regression: cannot connect to WPA-PSK (TKIP encryption) wireless network with network manager plasmoid

2009-06-09 Thread hasi
@APO:

I am not suffering from this bug, but I am suffering from the similar
bug 334052 (WPA2-PEAP), like ozone baby above. In my case, I was able to
fix it simply by not using the plasma-widget-network-manager. Instead
I am using nm-applet from network-manager-gnome package. I have it in my
KDE autostart folder, and it works painlessly, and very reliably and
smooth. (I am also using gnome's keyring manager to save passwords.)

I admit it is not the most pretty solution, but a totally pain-free
workaround. It only took me a few minutes to install, and once in place,
I never have to care about it any more. Have you tried this for your
case?

I totally agree with you that this is a serious bug and should be
addressed at with priority.

[Bug 339957] Re: Audio IN does not work on Dell E6400

2009-03-16 Thread hasi
Javier,
I am now pretty confident this is not but #275998 for several reasons:
a) In the original bug report of but #275998, the problem is very low volume,
but not complete lack of sound input as in my case.
b) In but #275998 people unanimously report problems in Intrepid. Some even say
it came when Hardy was replaced by Interpid. In my case I have perfect
out-of-the-box behavior in Intrepid
c) The problem clearly seems to be related to Pulse. Many people got
functionality back after removing Pulse. In my case the command dpkg
--get-selections | grep -i pulse only gives one pulse-related package,
libpulse0. So probably, pulse is not installed on my system. (Does KDE 4.2.1
not use pulse?)

I have now installed pulse and switched the audio in in skype to
pulse, but that has not changed anything: internal microphone still
does not work.

this when trying to use skype. No sound, even if I activate all the

Using Intrepid on the same machine, this is no problem. In Intrepid,
Kmix has an option Digital Input Source, with the two options Digital
Mic 1 and Analog (I am using the first one). In Jaunty, this option

[Bug 276943] Re: Resume from suspend doesn't not work on the Mobile 4 Series chipsets

2009-01-09 Thread hasi

Jan:

Are you able to do several subsequent suspend/resume cycles
successfully? I have almost the same hardware than you (E6400 with GM45
and Intel 5300). My resume works perfect the first time. When I did it
the second time, the touchpad did not work correctly. It behaved like it
was in PS/2 emulation mode. The third time, the problems became even
bigger: the system could not make a WiFi connection, and CPU1 was locked
up at 100% by a process called events/0.

I am currently using the latest kernel (2.6.27.11), however, I am on
kubuntu 8.10 (with KDE 4.2 beta2). Can you test several suspend/resumes
on your machine in order to find out whether this could possibly be a
KDE-specific issue?

The problem with the locked up CPU1 I also got frequently in the
previous kernel version(s).

[Bug 272185] Re: [Intrepid] iwl3945 + iwlagn -- network-manager will not connect to a WPA EAP (Enterprise) network (disassociating by local choice (reason=3) )

2009-01-09 Thread hasi
I used the workaround hinted by Dan Bracey. It worked perfectly on a
Dell E6400 with Intel 5300 WiFi. I fixed my previous problems connecting
to a WPA2 Enterprise access point using PEAP/MSCHAPv2.

I am running kubuntu, however, I was using nm-applet instead of
knetworkmanager to connect to the network. Thus, I would expect that
ubuntu would behave identical on the same hardware.

In addition to the suggestions made by Dan, I also upgraded
knetworkmanager and network-manager-kde, hoping that the KDE-native
knetworkmanager would be able to connect as well. Unfortunately, it
still fails. Are there any additional KDE libraries that need to be
upgraded, or is ubuntu just ahead of kubuntu when it comes to WiFi on
jaunty?

[Bug 270643] Re: ALPS touchpad not recognized in Dell Latitude E6400

2008-09-30 Thread hasi
Mackenzie and Matteo: thank you so much for helping here! I believe we
are getting close!!!

Unfortunately, I am not very experienced, Mackenzie. Which daily build are you
referring to? Please bare in mind that my system has an Intel NIC which is very
likely affected by the e1000e problem, so that I am hesitant to try any of the
2.6.27 kernels at present.
However, there is very good news: I tried the patch that Matteo Collina
suggested (thanks so much Matteo for finding this one!!!). I compiled a Hardy
kernel, and it works! ALPS touchpad is correctly recognized. (it is listed in
/proc/bus/input/devices). Also, after mapping the correct event in xorg.conf,
and enabling SHMConfig, I am able to use synclient to change many touchpad
settings. I successfully adjusted MinSpeed, MaxSpeed, AccelFactor. Vert and
Horiz. scroll are working fine (after finding good numbers for RightEdge and
BottomEdge).

However, since I am new at kernel compiling, I also had some problems.
Currently my system is running 2.6.24-21. The kernel I had compiled
turned out to be a customized version of 2.6.24-3. The wireless card and
NIC were not recognized, as in earlier Hardy versions (before 8.04.1).
What did go wrong? Did I not install the correct source packages? I
would really like to get this working in Hardy. Can anyone help me? I
believe I am very close. The only thing I need to do is apply the patch
to the most recent version of Hardy.

[Bug 270643] Re: ALPS touchpad not recognized in Dell Latitude E6400

2008-09-23 Thread hasi
Brian,

due to bug #263555 (see link below), my Intel Ethernet card may be destroyed
when I use the 2.6.27 kernel.
Therefore, I am no longer in a position to boot Intrepid images until this is
resolved.

[Bug 89517] Re: Synaptics touchpad isnt detected

2008-09-22 Thread hasi
@sloan1919:

In your /proc/bus/input/devices output shown above, the ALPS is
present. Is that what happens every time or every 50 times?

In my case (Dell E6400), I never saw it appear in
/proc/bus/input/devices. However, if there is a small chance that it
gets recognized, I could automatically grep for it on startup and do
further research when it is detected correctly.

Also, are you still on 2.6.24?

Hi Brian,
thank you for looking into this!
Actually, I had just completed all the upgrades today, and I am on the 2.6.27-4

[Bug 269490] Re: suspend/resume broken on dell Latitude E6400 kernel 2.6.27-3

2008-09-20 Thread hasi
Previously, the standby/hibernate and resume functions tended to be
affected by the kvm module(s). This was documented in bugs #113038 and
#163862.

Is there a chance the observed behavior may depend on whether the kvm
/kvm-intel modules are loaded? I seem to remember that suspend would no
longer work after I had installed VirtualBox in an earlier version.

I apologize if this information is very vague. I hope that these hints
would be helpful to the ones who want to play around with some settings
to hunt the bug.

[Bug 270643] Re: ALPS touchpad not recognized in Dell Latitude E6400

2008-09-18 Thread hasi
No, it also does not work in Hardy. The situation looks exactly the
same: device not present in /proc/bus/input/devices.

Maybe this is interesting: if I run sudo tpconfig, I get the following
output:

Found Synaptics Touchpad.
Firmware: 8.96 (multiple-byte mode).

I cannot tell what this actually means. It sounds like the touchpad is
recognized at some level.
However, I cannot change any of the touchpad settings. For instance if I run
sudo tpconfig -z4, to change the sensitivity, the command is syntactically
recognized correctly. However, the value always remains at 6, as I get the
following response: Z threshold: 6 of 7.. If I enter a number larger than 7
(i.e. sudo tpconfig -z8), I get an error message: 'Invalid Z threshold 8
[use 0-7].'

Thanks to everyone who is willing to look into this.
Please let me know if I can provide any further information or if can run some
additional tests.

Mackenzie,

thanks very much for looking into this.

Which OS version do you want me to look at? I am currently running Hardy
(2.6.24-21).
My xorg.conf is attached, and it is pretty basic at this point.
My guess is that the touchpad section is not doing anything anyway, as touchpad
is not recognized and unloaded by X. To show you what I am talking about, I
also attached a fragment of my /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Let me know if you are interested in anything else.

[Bug 270643] [NEW] ALPS touchpad not recognized in Dell Latitude E6400

2008-09-15 Thread hasi
Public bug reported:

Using freshly installed Ubuntu 8.10-alpha5, kernel 2.6.27-3 on a new DELL
Latitude E6400.
ALPS touchpad is not recognized by X (see attached file
/proc/bus/input/devices).
Only the PS/2 emulation mode works (very basic touchpad functionality).

It has been observed in earlier cases that the latest ALPS touchpads
were not recognized. Fixes were relatively easy (see bug#129477,
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/129477).

Is this as simple as adding the name/number of the latest ALPS touchpad
to the code?

[Bug 54776] Sorry, guys...

2007-11-05 Thread hasi

Sorry for the confusion, guys. I have been quite heavily using OOo and MS Word
2003 in parallel for a few weeks now (for several reasons). I could have sworn
that the fonts look nicer in Word. When I was trying to prove it doing some
snapshots, I found they practically look the same (see screenshot)!
Now I am puzzled why that is. I actually am shocked facing the possibility that
I may be positively biased for MS product...
One difference may be that on my current settings, I have the minimal size for
the AA in OOo to 1, whereas the AA seems to be switched off in my wine/MS
Word settings for the smaller fonts. That may have caused my impression.
Similarly, in my snapshot, the menus in Word are not AA'ed at all, whereas OOo
does its not-so-perfect AA. I actually prefer no AA at all in that case!

Hey Panda_N_Shark,
I have Kubuntu--anyway I went through quite a bit of pain until I had VPN up,
so let me give it a try. What do you mean vpn connections don't show up?
Does it mean the nm-applet does not show VPN Connections submenu? Or is there

the parameters for the vpn connection you want? Which program did you use?

[Bug 72609] Re: K3b temporarily ejects disk before verification

2007-09-30 Thread hasi
I can confirm this problem for Kubuntu 7.04 on a Dell Latitude D620 Notebook.
I find something I haven't seen reported in the previous postings: after the
disk is finished, I get a window that asks me whether I want to re-load the
disk. If I close in the CD tray manually and hit the load button, the
verification kicks in normally. The problem is that this has to happen within a
few seconds, otherwise K3b reports an error (No files to verify found on
disk, or similar).
I would be perfectly happy if that there was no time out, but K3b would wait
for a manual decision from the user: whether to load the CD for verification or
whether to cancel and skip verification. This should be fairly simple to
implement.
Just my 2 cents.

[Bug 138493] Re: No subpixel antialiasing in OOo

2007-09-30 Thread hasi
I notice the same problem with Kubuntu 7.04 (using
libfreetype6/libcairo2/libxft2 packages) and OpenOffice 2.2: the fonts in
almost all applications look perfect to me. However, in OOo, the font smoothing
is of substantially lower quality. I can confirm that there is some font
smoothing in OOo by turning the corresponding option off in OOo: it will get
totally unsmoothed.
As far as I can tell, this thread is about exactly this problem (let me know if
not). However, I am not as knowledgeable as the previous two posters and thus
do not really understand what their comments mean. My questions is: knowing
what you told me, is there anything I can tweak in OOo (or the system) in order
to get higher-quality visual experience in OOo?
Thanks very much for you help.
