Sorry I keep on posting here, but... ...everything works fine now, but I cannot seem to MUTE the mic (or the Analog Mix) in Output without losing 95% of sound intensity when recording. Hope Mervin is as lightheaded as I am and this is his problem, too. BTW, my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base was edited to include "options snd- hda-intel model=6stack-dig". I have the exact same problem, my main specs: - Dual Boot between Windows & Kubuntu Gutsy - AMD 64 X2 6000+ - M2N32 SLI Deluxe (Wireless Edition) - Geforce 8800 GTS 320 Mb - Soundblaster X-Fi only used in Windows due to lack of support in Gutsy. - Onboard Soundmax soundcard (AD1988 chipset) (6stack w/ SPDIF). Currently used in Linux and the source of this headache. >From what I've gathered, there are other motherboards with the AD1988 chipset, but I've only seen this specific problem reported for the M2N series. @superid: Your fix does not work for us M2N users. I can see you write "options snd-hda-intel", but you have an Intel-based PC. Do you happen to know if there's a different option for AMD users? I'm investigating that now, but so far this is the only website where this is being treated as a bug and not as an isolated issue, and I can't find a solution anywhere. @Mervin: Were you able to fix this problem? This might be too simplistic, seeing what you've tried already, but have you tried running alsamixer (in a terminal) and turning up all the levels? The position_fix value is a part of the line you added: snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=6stack Although this deals with DMA pointers and shouldn't be the cause of your problem. Take a look at the ALSA Documentation info for your chipset: 925 AD1988 926 6stack6-jack 927 6stack-digditto with SPDIF 928 3stack3-jack 929 3stack-digditto with SPDIF 930 laptop3-jack with hp-jack automute 931 laptop-digditto with SPDIF 932 auto auto-config reading BIOS (default) Which configuration does your system follow? How many audio jacks? Is there an SPDIF jack? Are you on a laptot? Select the best option from the list. Looked at Alsa Config file and could not find my particular file AD1988B nearest was AD1988 So I then Tried changing to options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=6stack - made no difference to machine at all. I cannot find the position_fix value to change it to 0 (auto)- where do I find it?. I recommend you take a look at the ALSA-Configuration.txt file. You can find it online at: http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt The "3stack" model worked for my motherboard, but yours is probably something different. Try running the following command from the terminal: cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 The first line of output should show you your codec chip. Then try and find it in the ALSA-Configuration.txt file (lines 780-981). Feel free to change the position_fix value to 0 (auto), or to suppress the parameter altogether. I'm not sure what will work for you, but our problems seem too similar for this not to be your solution as well. Just remember to try restarting the system, a simple restart of the alsa drivers didn't work for me. Good luck! Fixed! Try editing /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base as root (i.e. "sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base") and adding the following to the end of the file: options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=3stack Then restart the system (restarting alsa wasn't enough for me). I confirm this behavior. Currently running Ubuntu Gutsy (7.10, amd64) on ASUS P5NSLI, Intel Core 2 Duo E6420, 2GB RAM. I've tried all settings in Volume Control, alsamixer, alsamixergui and qamix, and have also attempted to change settings in /etc/esound/esd.conf. Still no microphone output, and testing Sound capture in System > Sound > Devices tab yields the following (for ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) : "Failed to construct test pipeline for 'gconfaudiosrc ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=chat'" When selecting Test Sound from the Sound capture drop-down box and clicking Test, I hear the beep.
