[Bug 251344] Re: Hardy proposed 2.6.24-20-generic kernel update will not boot
Regarding to the previous post, I have never had to reinstall the nvidia driver, which is the one available from the -restricted-modules package. It has seamlessly worked throughout all kernel updates until -20. I have never used EnvyNG nor did I know what it was until I googled for it. -- Hardy proposed 2.6.24-20-generic kernel update will not boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/251344 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 251344] Re: Hardy proposed 2.6.24-20-generic kernel update will not boot
Ok, just to be clear. I had to reinstall nvidia drivers with EnvyNG every time i changed kernel. From 2.6.24-16 -> 2.6.24-17, 2.6.24-17->2.6.24-18 etc. So I personally don't consider this as a bug, but as something that has to be done every time we switch to a newer kernel build. If this is a bug, I presume it is connected with EnvyNG, not with the kernel build. -- Hardy proposed 2.6.24-20-generic kernel update will not boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/251344 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

someone said that the newest kernel missed a commit or something that fixed a problem with the kernel calling RDST (acronym is most likely wrong) or some other cpu instruction, and all the people having the problems were cpus that dont have that instruction so the cpu locks up the explanation is somewhere in this huge bug report, i just cant look through it right now -- Hardy proposed 2.6.24-20-generic kernel update will not boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/251344 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

same problem. Will the kernel that Tim refers to coming out in a couple of days get auto updated while I am running on 2.6.24.19 or is there something else I need to do to jump from .19 to .21 ? BTW I had installed eclipse and it is not to be found anymore (says its not installed after I boot with 2.6.24.19) - is this normal for programs to be tied to the kernel and distribution (I thought they should not be). Will a fresh get of the program conflict with any future kernel update ? -- Hardy proposed 2.6.24-20-generic kernel update will not boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/251344 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 251344] Re: Hardy proposed 2.6.24-20-generic kernel update will not boot
For more than 3 months now some people have been complaining about ununtu's 2.6.24 kernels causing random freezes to a few systems (see the many threads that come out googling for hardy + freeze). This particularly nasty bug is still unfixed. It was noticed that 2.6.25 kernels did not have the issue. Conseqently the porting of a 2.6.25 kernel to hardy was asked many times (for instance see ubuntu brainstorm). However, porting a 2.6.25 kernel to hardy was always excluded as a "big jump in the dark" in spite of most major distros and a huge number of users using it routinely. It was said that the right way to go was to backport pieces of 2.6.25 as patches to 2.6.24. And now we have this incident proving that also the cherry-picking is no less a jump in the dark. At this point please rethink the kernel policies and let ubuntu follow the normal kernel updates provided by kernel.org. Or please, do it at least whenever moving to a well tested plain 2.6.x.y is easier than trying to patch-again an already very-much- patched and only-tested-by-ubuntu-users 2.6.x-k. -- Hardy proposed 2.6.24-20-generic kernel update will not boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/251344 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Also in my previous post when I suspected that EnvyNG is the problem I didn't make the system work with generic but with the 386 kernel. To avoid any confusion please give us information what kernels should we test? Generic, smb, 386? Is only generic affected with this bug, or all of them? I agree 100% with what Ripps818 says. This update only went in to hardy- proposed, which is a testing repository for updated packages. hardy- proposed is aimed at people wanting to test updated packages, and is designed to catch problems like this. The only users affected by this problem are those who have explicitly enabled the hardy-proposed testing repository, and not the general user base. People running hardy-proposed should be prepared for occasional breakage like this (as is the case with running the unstable branch) -- Hardy proposed 2.6.24-20-generic kernel update will not boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/251344 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
