I'm experiencing the same problem often when printing PDF files I need for university through evince and ODT files through OOo-Writer. We're using a Samsung ML-2850D network printer here. I also have a similar bug with my Brother MFC-7840W that I have already reported. Problem with print corruption and spitting out lots of blank pages. It seems that the printer is set to a certain emulation (most probably PCL) and therefore does not handle jobs in its native language correctly. Try to do a reset to factory defaults: 1. Turn off the printer 2. Turn it on while holding down the front panel button of the printer. Release the button. The Drum light must be on after that operation. 3. Now press and hold down the button until the Ready light turns on and then release the button. The printer performs a reset to factory settings now. If the printer does not return to its default state (only Ready light on), turn it off and turn it on again. Now try to print. Does it work now? I don't know if this is relevant, but it's related to the last part of the previous comment. Often when I turn on the printer and hook it up, the system doesn't find the printer. Can you run the command sudo foomatic-getpjloptions /dev/usb/lp0 and post the output here? I don't have a live CD to try. I tried the Generic PCL4 suggestion, and that worked. When I changed the ppd back to the Brother version, it still worked. Then I restarted the machine for an unrelated purpose (other maintenance was installed). After the restart, it failed again. I'm attaching the error log. After two pages came out, I canceled the print job and removed all the paper from the printer so it wouldn't go on forever. The first page had this: %-123...@pjl @PJL ENTER LANGUAGE = HBP @l...@g The second page had only the letter 'P' on the far right side of the page near the top. I tried the gs -dNOPAUSE suggestion and it had similar results. I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10 this morning and the problem remains. I tried reinstalling the foomatic-rip from bug 287240, and it made no difference. One additional thing I noticed this time is that the printer starts printing as soon as the 'Data' light starts flashing. I've had this problem for three Ubuntu releases. When I try to print
using Ubuntu 8.04 and a Brother HL-730 Plus printer the output often
looks like this:

This kind of stuff gets printed out forever on every page until I cancel
the job and power down the printer. Occasionally, when I restart the
printer it will start to work ok as long as I print the test page first,
but usually when I turn the printer back on it goes back to printing
garbage.
I use a USB cable to connect the printer. I installed the printer with
the default driver using the simple steps in the Ubuntu printing
utility. I've found others with similar problems and have reinstalled
everything as instructed, but the problem persists. It looks to me like
the printer command is being printed instead of the content of what is
supposed to be printed. What is going on? What should I do?
