2008-09-29 Thread Janpreet
I am a newbie so please be easy on me, I have exact same problem. We
have unsecured hotspot at my work, I have username and password for the
hotspot login page too but my problem is, it doesn't even connect and
obtain IP address.

Works fine with my home, secured network. I uninstalled network-manager,
tried it with WICD and it was doing exact same thing. So I finally
reinstalled Network Manager.

If I boot to my Vista OS, I am able to connect to Unsecured network.
Please can someone address this issue? If you need some logs file please
let me know what you need and I will provide as much details as you
need. Thanks

I am using Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy on my Dell Inspiron 1720 machine.

I have the same experience. Had to turn off encryption for an XP
computer to be able to connect and since then connecting to the open
network has been very buggy. Installing seahorse to easily remove the
stored keyring password for the network SSID worked on another computer,
but on one computer it is still buggy to connect. One must be fiddling
around with connecting/disconnecting a lot and be very lucky to
connect...

Yes, it's really tough to tell. There seem to be so many issues with
WiFi, and Broadcom-based chipsets in particular, that it's difficult to
determine "what's what". :-/

I will report back once I have time to play with an ndiswrapper-based
configuration. That may provide some more insight.

I experience the 2nd problem you mentioned except I use ndiswrapper. My
chipset is bcm43xx. I am able to connect to wireless networks when this
problem arises with network manager by command line (ifdown eth1 && ifup

seeing your comments and modifications to this bug I beginning to wonder
if we talking about the same bug.

[Bug 73759] Re: Unable to connect to unsecured/unencrypted wireless networks (bcm43xx-based chips only?)

2007-06-11 Thread Chris Wagner
I'm beginning to think that there may be more than one issue/bug that I
am seeing. One of them is almost certainly not even related to network-
manager; the other may be:

  1) Often-times I will begin to see some log entries like these:
Jun 10 23:28:47 bethany-laptop kernel: [21350.32] bcm43xx: IRQ_READY
timeout
Jun 10 23:28:50 bethany-laptop NetworkManager: ^I
nm_device_802_11_wireless_scan (): could not trigger wireless scan on device
eth1: No such device
Once I begin to see these log entries (the "IRQ_READY timeout" one, in
particular), I cannot make any wireless connections, not using the command-line
WiFi tools nor using network-manager. This is the issue which *could be*
caused by network-manager; it's possible network-manager does something that
messes up the given device ("eth1", for me), but I'm beginning to think that it
may be a driver/kernel problem. I still don't understand what this "IRQ_READY"
business is, even after doing some Google'ing, so I'm not in a position to make
any calls on it. However, I am always able to work around this problem by
reloading the bcm43xx driver: "sudo rmmod bcm43xx; sudo modprobe bcm43xx".

  2) The other problem is much less understood. The problem is that I
simply cannot connect to wireless networks sometimes, even though there
appears to be no problem with the device's configuration at the time
(AFAICT). It's *possible* that this isn't even a problem with my
computer, but one with the access points to which I'm trying to connect;
I don't think that's the case, though, from my (rather limited)
experiences. In the case of this problem, I am not able to connect to
an access point using the command-line tools nor using network-manager
(DHCP simply times out). I don't know for sure that this problem is
specific to unencrypted networks, either (!!). I need to try Phillip's
suggestion (above), but it is quite hard to test this stuff, as visiting
an area with proper access points for testing is time consuming... and
unreliable regardless of wireless device.

So, overall, my experience with this computer and its bcm43xx-based card
have just been plain *patchy*. I'm not sure what to make of it anymore.
Moving forward, I will look to try Phillip's suggestion, and I will
probably give the ndiswrapper approach a shot.

2007-06-11 Thread Chris Wagner
** Description changed:

(I (Chris Wagner) have hijacked this bug report to make it a place to
gather my findings and those of others, with regard to problems we've
had in connecting to unencrypted wireless access points using network-
  manager.)

So far, my experience is a mixed bag. I am having the problems on an HP
laptop that has a bcm43xx-based chip. I can't say it with absolute
certainty, but I don't believe I've had trouble with connecting to an
encrypted access point. I do *usually* have trouble with connecting to
unencrypted access points, when using network-manager. The command-
line-based tools do seem to work okay for all networks; I can't recall
any specific issues. I have had this problem, or some form of it, since
Dapper, and I'm presently on Feisty. I want to say that I've had the
problem with both an ndiswrapper-based configuration and the native
bcm43xx driver. I am currently using the native bcm43xx driver.

I'm actually filing this on behalf of a coworker who is having issues
connecting to unsecured wireless networks. We use WPA TKIP at our office and it
works just fine. However, attempting to connect to an unsecured network fails
everytime.

I'm not sure what additional information you'll need in terms of logging
(I've not seen any that really makes sense).

  Laptop: Dell Inspiron
  Wireless: broadcom (NOT using ndiswrapper)

The laptop is fully configured to use NetworkManager. The only entries
in /etc/network/interfaces are for lo. All interfaces are deconfigured
in the gnome networking tool. The laptop can switch fully between wired
and secure wireless networks but NOT unsecured wireless networks that
other laptops at the same location can use.

I'll post more information about model numbers and wireless card when I
can get on the laptop again.

OK this is what I found. When I am at a coffee shop with no encryption
and encrypted networks nearby, I cannot connect to the coffee shops
unencrypted signal. But If I try to connect to one of the encrypted
networks, type in an incorrect password, I get rejected and
Networkmanager stop trying to connect to anything. I then tell
Networkmanager to connect to the coffee shops unencrypted network and I
have no problem connecting. It seems like that NM needs to turn on
WPAsupplicant to connect to the unencrypted network, but NM doesn't turn
it on until it needs it for an encrypted network.

2007-04-03 Thread David Fokkema
My Edgy installation was working just fine with network manager. I have
a bcm43xx card. I just upgraded to Feisty and it seems to be impossible
to let network manager connect. It is an unsecured network and I can't
test a secured network at this moment. I have this problem with both
ndiswrapper and bcm43xx.
