I find this pallete __very__ interesting. Ubuntu really needs a good
pallete. Although I think that there are 2 or 3 colours that looks
too light. I encourage everybody at artwork-team to bring his own
pallete and then choose the best option or mix the best ones. I'll
send mine this weekend, I promise.

Have a nice day!

It depends on how you use the machine. If the machine has dual boot
with Windows and you are using some common partition to transfer data
between both OS or if the machine is on a Windows network then
probably it is good idea to have antivirus installed.

Firewall is inbuilt in the Linux kernel. All you need is a way to
manager it. You can install package firestarter for a GUI to manage
it.

There is a program aptoncd available in universe repository, using

I do not have the server edition with me. I have the

Anyone on this list who has it(server edition)?

Or do you know if it was given with any computer

You'll get older versions of Ubuntu (for example 6.06
DVD) with September 2006 issue of Linux for You
(http://www.linuxforu.com), if you interested in
having it.

I live in Bandra (W). So you tell me when and where
we could meet and exchange CD's.

I wouldn't mind coming over, but I guess, Sanjay from
this list (Sanjay, if you can help) has Ubuntu 7.04
destkop version and he too is located in Bandra.
If he can help you, he'll probably email you and then
you guys can meet up and exchange the CDs. (I have
sent a copy of this email to him as well)

It could be easier for you as well as him to get that
CD. I too have to pay him Rs. 20/- and return his CD
box, so if you make a plan to meet, I too will acquire
a copy of Ubuntu 7.04 CD and give back his things to
him. So, do let me know when y'all finalize a venue,

ALso, all the applications you use is OpenSource, there can be bugs, but

Other thing is, since you execute users programs with your limited user
capabilities, not root, the code if malicious will not do any harm.
There are lot many factors. Linux has never been an easy and successful
platform for Virus propagation and attack.

Linux doesnt have something like Buffer Overflow bugged Abstract Syntax
Notation (ASN), Scripting Layers, heavily bugged RPC etc.

Neither assembly and shell code exploit could do anything on
Linux(secure implementation), nor did the malicious scripting work. Any
virus from Emails can also do nothing on your system and also can't
execute itself to replicate.
So you have the secure system dear friend. There is really no need for
antivirus. They are used on Linux servers, like mail server and also on
system which is information gateway to mixed type environment, cuz they
have to remove the virus and malicious attachments before it goes to
Windows systems.

SO ultimately, what you learn, no virus if you use LInux, so no

But if you have Windows too in other partition, you must install

not free, and is the heavy system resource eating package,.Also ,
removing Norton much times give you a pain in ass, and surely after than
you need to reinstall WIndows.

Firewall is necessary, on Ubuntu Feisty, every port is shielded. So as a
default, you have maximum security. If you need to open some ports, you
can guard them with firewall.

Nearly all the viruses can only run in MS Windows but can't run in ubuntu.
And, nearly all the attacks can take effect in MS Windows but can't in

I was talking about Avast on Windows Machines. I said we don't need any

Avast got better with its new release. Since the opensource package

The other thing you can do is leave some empty space at the moment, in
case you guess wrong. You can always move a directory tree (such as
/usr) to another partition - it's quite easy when using a Live CD, but
you can do it when the partitions are mounted (but it takes some
fiddling) - if you want to do the latter, I can dig out a link that
  explains what to do step-by-step.

Neil Thanks for the ideas. I think you're right about LVM - may be
a bit advanced for me just now.

I wish I'd had your idea about leaving some space before I went
ahead. But never mind - I made / 30Gb, swap 2Gb, and /home got the rest
of the space. I guess, if need be, I could split the /home partition,
which is the last on the drive, and move a directory tree. I'm hoping
this won't ever be necessary; but I'd be grateful if you could send the
link if you think it might help.

Here's the link I mentioned originally:
http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/aix/library/au-satmigrat.html?ca=dgr-lnxw07MoveUnixFileSystem

This describes how to move a directory tree on a live system. It is
specifically for AIX, but all the commands should work on Ubuntu too.
If you come across something that's confusing or doesn't work the
same, let me know.
It's a similar process using a Live CD (such as the Ubuntu install
CD), but you need to mount all the filesystems first.

Here's a link to a link to an article about using LVM:
http://linuxhelp.blogspot.com/2006/05/managing-disk-space-with-lvm.html
The article about LVM is linked from this page, but I included this
link since it also discusses resizing partitions with LVM.
As I said and you agreed, this is possibly too advanced at the moment.
One suggestion is to set up a small virtual install (e.g. qemu,
vmware, or xen) and play about with LVM in that (then the rest of your
data should be safe).

The final link discusses how to resize partitions:
http://www.sharms.org/blog/?p=72
The disclaimer at the top is scary, but it means that you need to
think about your particular situation before typing in any commands.
If you type the commands exactly as printed, you may well lose your
data.

What a link-fest!

Any suggestions for improvement would be most welcome! (Though, to be

[ubuntu-uk] What do non-techies like the most about Ubuntu?

2007-05-15 Thread Chris Rowson
I thought it'd be interesting to find out what it is that impresses
new non-techie users the most about Ubuntu.

For people who are 'into' IT it may be engineering, adaptability or
the politics of FOSS. For the large majority though it's likely to be
something quite different.

I hope that this information will help us sell Ubuntu more effectively
and help focus in on some themes that can be included in future
marketing campaigns (like the leaflet suggestion for instance).

Here's my example.

Like many IT folks, I'm the unpaid tech support to an array of family
and friends. Anyone who comes to me wanting a basic desktop (ie - who
doesn't want to play computer games) gets Ubuntu.

What has surprised me is that the most commented on feature of Ubuntu
from the perspective of the non-technical user is the add/remove
programs menu option. People seem to be very impressed that they can
simply click a button and quality software appears for free, ready to
use on their computer.

Surely more can be made of this to punt the feature to new potential users

Any other examples ?

Chris

[ubuntu-uk] Odd behaviour of system clock

2007-05-15 Thread I C McNab
I recently set up a dual boot system with Fiesty and WinXP on separate
drives. (Previously, I've used various versions of Ubuntu as the only
OS on a laptop and a desktop.) I've just noticed on the dual boot
system that when I restart XP after using Ubuntu the system clock
appears to have lost an hour. (I guess it could be resetting to GMT,

Has anyone had a similar experience? Is there a fix - apart from

I thought it'd be interesting to find out what it is that impresses
new non-techie users the most about Ubuntu.

I work on a helpdesk as a day job supporting windows 2K/XP and an
AS/400. Most of our users know how to use a computer to get their job
done and that's it. Any errors at all (from my computer won't switch
on to the internet's gone down) are reported to us and we
basically tell them (after three, 1...2...3) Have you tried switching
it off and back on again? which, as it's windows, usually fixes the
problem.

One of our users who I can only describe as completely non technical
(she keeps doing house keeping on her My Documents folder and then
wondering why she can't locate files in the same place they were
before!) picked up a recycled PC from us the other day without an
operating system as we don't have licenses for that kit any more.

Quick as a flash, as soon as she had left the room I sent her an email
telling her about Ubuntu. I sourced a copy of Feisty for her and she
installed it without any issues, including the Internet Setup. She
then passed this PC to a charity who are using it for their daily work
without an issue.

So, to answer the question, the non-techies that I've spoken to like
Ubuntu for ease of use, quick installs and the fact that thinks just
work.

Beste Frederik

 kernel: acpi=force

Denis Suhanov!

sudo route add -net 192.168.250.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 192.168.1.225 eth0
sudo route add -net 192.168.10.8 netmask 255.255.255.248 gw 192.168.1.225 eth0
sudo route add -net 192.168.10.16 netmask 255.255.255.248 gw 192.168.1.225
 eth0

Encodage vidéo très très lent depui s feisty

2007-05-15 Thread Daniel Caillibaud
Bonjour,

 contourner l’interdit.

 nom_utilisateur application_graphique me renvoyait l’erreur suivante :
 (evolution-2.6:12984) : Gtk-WARNING ** : cannot open display :.

s'y essayer...

Il faut installer sux :

apt-get install sux

Puis pour lancer une application graphique :

sux - martin evolution

fichier généré par dvd::rip...
Peut-être qu'avec un peu de chance :-)

Feisty-dvd-i386.iso

2007-05-15 Thread Lami René
Bonjour,

Je n'arrive pas à télécharger l'iso « feisty-dvd-i386.iso » avec KTorrent.

KTorrent me donne le message « Erreur : Cannot preallocate diskspace :
Argument invalide ».

J'ai 34 Go de disponibles sur 49 Go.

http://torrent.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/releases/feisty/release/dvd/kubuntu-7.04-dvd-i386.iso.torrent
http://torrent.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/dvd/20070418/feisty-dvd-i386.iso.torrent

valide ?

Ou, peut-être que « kubuntu-7.04-dvd-i386.iso », ça n'existe pas ?

L'ami René

[Bug 32415] Re: Bluetooth Mouse and Keyboard Broken in Dapper/Edgy/Feisty

2007-05-15 Thread Zoltan
Hi,
Just want to add my name to the list of peeps affected by this bug :-)
I have the Logitech MX Bluetooth Kyb/Mouse, which was fine until 5.10, and
after having shelved this expensive monster for a year, I see it's still not
fine in 7.04 - but at least re-plugging it seems to re-awaken it.
I'll keep an eye on this thread, but email me if there is anything I can add or
help with.
Rgds,
Zoltan

This issue _is_ important ! The default /bin/sh does not conform to LSB

few scripts fail, one of them being nautilus-open-terminal.

[Bug 103277] Re: ata2 2.6.20-15-generic ata2: port is slow to respond

2007-05-15 Thread Russel Winder
I have just upgraded from Edgy to Feisty on my laptops and workstation.
The laptops seem to have gone fine, the workstation has not. When I try
and boot with the 2.6.20-15 kernel, it hangs for a while and then drops
out to Busybox with prompt (initramfs) and the message:

ata2: port failed to respond

Clearly this is a blocker! I am not sure how to get dmesg type
information since it won't actually boot so I don't get a record.

If I boot the old 2.6.17-11 kernel then everything works fine. The
uname -a information is:

Linux balin 2.6.17-11-generic #2 SMP Tue Mar 13 23:32:38 UTC 2007 i686
GNU/Linux

I could attach the dmesg etc. record is that is helpful.

If I try the 2.6.20-15 recover boot then I see messages looking a little
like the above which is why I have attached to this bug report rather
than create a new one. If this was the wrong thing to do, I can always
start a new entry.

I am at a total loss to know how to proceed on this one. 2.6.17-11 is
fine 2.6.20-15 is totally broken on this one machine although fine on
others :-(

Thanks.
