If this is not enough then it means tweaking the layout algorithm which is (though I've tried to make it generic) maybe a little preferred to smaller displays. As Ross mentions, the openmoko guys are known to be working on a number of improvements to matchbox-keyboard key to which is a proper themeing engine. See this thread; http://lists.o-hand.com/matchbox/0117.html and perhaps http://lists.o-hand.com/matchbox/0128.html . Another thing worth mentioning is hildon uses input windows in a slightly more complex way than a default matchbox wm build. I.e they build with --enable-alt-input-windows which essentially expects the input window to set it transiency to the window its inputing for. This is so matchbox knows if the target window is a dialog or an application window and then it behaves differently - for example an application window wont be resized (the keyboard is overlaid) and the resizing/repositioning of a dialog is also different. For this to work it needs support from both applications and the input window itself - and matchbox-keyboard does not currently do this. I do not 100% understand how its handled by the hildon input method infrastructure nor applications. A default matchbox build will just resize app and dialog windows (just as if the input window is a panel). It seems unfortunately not very robust at the moment but I am unsure whether this is to do with the calling mechanism itself or the actual geoclue backend. Using a Gutsy Install CD directly on Menlow-Crown Beach system
Will it ever be possible to take the Gutsy Install CD and use it to install the full Gutsy directly on a Menlow (e.g. Crown Beach) platform's hard disk drive? This is a different usage scenario from using a Menlow image created with moblin image-creator. The reason I ask is that I've got an engineer who tried this usage scenario using the Tribe 4 CD and the install crashed in the middle. (I'd guess it was because the install CD may not be using the UME kernel which would cause problem on a Crown Beach.) I think we can accommodate his needs for installing full Gutsy on a Menlow system with image-creator, by either providing him with custom FSets (or showing him how to create them) for creating menlow images which will suite his needs. The idea behind is this: The home button always has a way to get to the apps page where one can pick an app, start it, restart/rechoose it. Note that in this version there are also no menus. Everything you see shows up fullscreen, although some things in the status bar will be an almost fullscreen overlay (which one could argue is just an associated pop-up and therefor really a menu). Using a task switcher menu turns out to be just as many steps, and more confusing that keeping things flat and simple. Again, this is an idea and I'm not really sure if it is possible to realize such functionality. Seems like this model could work, but would add a few steps for some operations. If I understand correctly, if I'm in an app and I want to close it, I would have to do 1)click home button 2)click apps button from home page 3) select my app 4) press stop/restart. (This is why I was asking about how the xorg.conf is generated when we met last week.) Possibly it would load up the vesa driver, which the installer usually does when it doesn't know what else to do. If this is considered an important use case, this might be something to work towards for Gutsy+1, but I think it may be too late in the cycle for Gutsy. I realized that the short time frame would not allow for everything I can draw on a canvas. Getting the system-wide settings decently done and trying, for instance, to make sure that the settings starter for each app are in the same place contextually would be a good start (ie. if we end up using menus, it would be in the same place in the same menu for every app). I find it useful for typing certain English words in Hindi, such as कॅकेशियन (Caucasian). Because the ॅ is coming over a consonant, does not mean it is a half-consonant ie without a vowel. It has its vowel, and the vowel is shaped by the ॅ. Some may prefer to write Caucasian as कॉकेशियन, but I generally write it as above. At any rate, there are a number of English words where one may prefer the कॅ to the कॉ. And the same with other consonants as well. Depending on where in the world one is from, the au of Caucasian is pronounced differently than the au of Australian -- which would be written with ऑ. Likewise, if the connection might not be closed properly at the end, so if it downloads a bunch of files and seems to hang for a while, just hit Control-C to return to the prompt. The checkout should be complete if it seems to have hung for, say 5min. without doing anything. 2. The code will include the Baraha keymap for Hindi, from which the keymaps for other languages will be generated. Compile these with cd baraha-maps make sudo make install You will need to have Perl installed, but it should be there by default. This will install the various xx-baraha.mim keymaps in /usr/share/m17n, some Perl modules in /usr/local/lib/site_perl, and a script called remap_lang in /usr/local/bin. Thus, you will need to have /usr/local/bin in your path, or call the script with the full pathname, i.e., /usr/local/bin/remap_lang. Should you wish to uninstall things, do sudo make uninstall 3. Here are some examples of using remap_lang: remap_lang -i Devanagari -o Bengali infile outfile transliterates Devanagari text in infile to Bengali text in outfile. Non-Devanagari text in infile is passed through unchanged. Any Indian script in Unicode can be used as input, or output. Try, remap_lang -i help for a list of known scripts Normally, a check is made that both the input character, and the output character are assigned in Unicode, and unassigned characters are silently dropped. You can force this check not to be done, and all characters to be transliterated with remap_lang -i Devanagari -o Bengali -c 0 infile outfile remap_lang -h gives a short usage message, and remap_lang -m a detailed manual. I had not considered such transliteration an important issue, so feedback on this script will be appreciated. I have thoroughly tested the Hindi keyboard. And I do believe we've got
it. All of the keys function as they are meant to, and it is working
very well.
I have a couple of idiosyncrasies to report, but I want to emphasize
that as regards the accuracy of character coding, the keyboard is in my
experience perfect. I could find no errors.
Here then are the idiosyncrasies. I am not quite sure what to make of
them, and I do not know whether there is anything to do about them or
not.
1. When typing in Open Office in hi-baraha, it seems to have difficulty
if I try to change fonts. For example, it always wants to be in Lohit
Hindi and to remain in that. If I want to use a different font, then it
fights with me a few times and keeps reverting back to Lohit Hindi.
Every time I type, it goes back to the old font. Finally if I take a
series of words, highlight them, and bring them by force into the new
font in which I am trying to type, then it pretty much stays in the new
font. And once I've typed few words in the new font, then it keeps with
the new font. But if I try to change to a third Hindi font, then again I
have to go through the same game back and forth between the old font and
the new font. --Not that I would normally be making such changes when in
a real work document, but in the course of testing I found this to be
the case.
2. It seems to have trouble with certain characters in particular
settings. For example, if in Open Office hi-baraha I type [तुम जाओ]
then most of the time by typing the final ], the ओ just prior gets
deleted. This happened less frequently if the opening [ was not
present, and did not seem to be a problem with most other characters.
However, if an ए was typed just before a final ], then there too,
the ए was deleted. None of that is happening as I am typing these
things right here in Evolution. But it was happening in Open Office.
3. I found that sometimes if I tried to type an increasing series of
numbers (digits), it would type the first one only, and refuse to type
any further digits. This only happened if the first digit was १; if
any other digit was the first number then it did not happen.
But then if I would come back to try that again later, sometimes it
would get stuck in a similar way, and sometimes not.
And again, this is not happening at all here in Evolution. It was only
in Open Office.
It is just an oddity that I am reporting. I do not know what it
represents and whether it will create any difficulty when doing work, or
whether it is just a strange happening that in regular working
situations will not arise.
4. One time I was typing in Kalimati font, and all non-Hindi characters
i.e. !'[]{} etc, were appearing in Arial font. And when I set the
Kalimati font size to 24, then all such !,[,] etc were continuing to
appearing in the original 12 font.
Later, when I again tried Kalimati font, then the non-Hindi characters
were this time coming in Kalimati font and working properly.

These are the idiosyncrasies which I have noted. I do not think that
they represent any sort of serious impediment to working in hi-baraha,
but I have reported them in the possibility that they may have some
meaning to you and there may be something that can or needs to be done
about them.
The keyboard itself is 100% accurate, and I would say it is great.

I have a question regards Unicode and TTF. The superiority of Unicode is clear from both scientific and systems approach perspectives. My question stems from a perceived need to be able to communicate with persons around the world whose computers are not yet upgraded to be able to accommodate Unicode. I do not have any numbers to say how common it is, but the question I would ask is: in your experience how common is it for Hindi readers to be accessing computers running on for example Win 98 which can only recognize TTF fonts? I do communicate regularly with many people in India via text documents in Hindi. Are there many people in India today who still only have access to TTF fonts? It is a matter which perhaps warrants addressing, because it is still a reality in today's world of communication. Actually, many of those with whom I communicate access computers either at their work place, which is surely going to be a modern computer with Unicode access, or at internet cafes which again are modern computers with Unicode access. Those with home computers, I have not queried directly yet: how many of them have pre-2000 computers which cannot recognize Unicode? Is there any facility in the current Linux system for accommodating communication with non-Unicode users? By that I mean transliteration to the appropriate corresponding character including more unusual conjuncts such as ज्ञ . So that if I write ज्ञान in Hindi and then give the order for transliteration into Bangla script, it will appear as the same word. There are many, many users of Baraha who cannot read the script of another's language but have an oral knowledge of it. So that if for example a native Gujarati speaker who knows Bangla but cannot read it, receives a letter in Bengali script, then he/she can give the order to convert the letter to Gujarati script and thereby easily read it. The Baraha program performs this sort of transliteration. And it works very well. It is a feature which many Baraha users find extremely valuable and use a lot. I do not personally have need for it, but it would be a good feature to be able to offer. I have read through the directions you provided, and it seems very interesting although I do not have the time that would be needed to carefully go through, fully understand and implement it just now. Perhaps another of the ubuntu-in readers who has interest, knowledge, and time could try it out and let us know how it works. What questions? Very similar to the questions I floated past yourself last week. How to come to terms with sudo compromise, or avoid or harden against it. Or in fact how to discover it has happened. Logically the questions would have led to an assessment of risk of 'trusted' software - repositories etc, although it was cut short as 'flogging a dead horse' :-) The comments and answers you kindly offered (thanks!) were excellent in addressing various actions for an increasing level of assurance of security, should one wish it. I am attracted to the idea of at some time, posting on the same forum an edited version of your comments as an answer to my satisfied needs fro knowledge, because it seemed to me that a number of others similar uncertainties. touch screen experience please?
I am being asked to comment on procurement of a touch screen - an external one which fits over the front of the display. A desktop compatible model is shown with no mention of how it connects. A laptop version is also shown with a comment that it is USB. Does anyone know if the technology is very likely to be easily compatible with USB as available in Ubuntu? Or are the various patents likely to force particular software drivers? Orca on GNOME, using Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn
Hi all (again :)), I'm now running GNOME under Ubuntu (7.04), and Orca latest SVN version (Orca 2.21.0pre). Or trying to. I'm probably missing something, since my Orca refuses to speak (unless in the GUI Preferences window of Orca itself, and, even so, it's only when it's starting or I press one of the buttons; the options are not read when I pass by them using keyboard or mouse). Looking at the GUI Prefs window, everything seems to be OK, in terms of configuration: speech enabled, speech system (GNOME...), speech synthetizer (eSpeak), voice config (default), character (brazil (pt))... Caros Amigos, Gostaria de saber se alguém sabe como resolver o problema do Botão Fechar do Pidgin, pq eu usava ele antes de fazer a atualização normal e depois que atualizei ele quando clico em fechar para ele minimizar e ficar na barra ao lado do Relogio ele agora está fechando o programa e ai tenho que entrar novamente e deixar ele aberto pois não está mais funcionando. Olá Altamiro, para que versão você atualizou? Eu estou usando agora a 2.1.0 e continua fechando e ficando na área de notificação. Talvez seja algum problema com a tua configuração. Uma solução, meio radical é apagar todas as tuas configurações. $ rm ~/.purple/ -Rf Lembrando que esse comando vai apagar também as configurações das suas contas e os logs. Se você não quiser fazer isso, me diga que versão você está usando que eu tento achar uma outra solução. Raphael, bom dia. Realmente é uma coisa muito esquisita. Aconpanhei seu caso ontem mas resolvi me pronunciar hoje. Para termos uma melhor compreensão do seu problema, mande o modelo da impressora e também o tipo de conexão que faz nela (socket/SMB/ipp/lpd). Tinha algumas impressoras aqui na empresa que não imprimiam por uma incompatibilidade de driver mesmo estando prontas. Era uma impressora usb e algumas coisas tinham que ser configuradas na estação para abrir a conexão na porta 9100, isso para impressoras com socket (como eu uso aqui). Corrigindo isso resolveu o problema. Se for este o seu caso, tente das estações dar um telnet na porta 9100 no ip da impressora. **Uma dica, já tentou usar um printserver? Em relação ao Jabber acho que atualizando para as versões mais novas (Pidgin) este problema não acontece. http://www.getdeb.net/app.php?name=pidgin Mesmo no Gaim ainda tem uma solução. Clique com o botão direito e peça para ver as informações do contato, se ele definiu um apelido o contato passará a mostrar o apelido. No ICQ o que deve ter acontecido é que por algum motivo os nicks estão como apelido locais, experimente clicar com o botão direito e escolher Apelido e apagar todo o conteúdo do apelido. Provavelmente ele vai buscar o novo nick no servidor. [Ubuntu-BR] Problema de segurança com o http_p roxy
Olá pessoal. Eu uso o ubuntu em uma rede que necessita de autenticação do proxy. Como eu tinha alguns problemas para fazer atualização com o apt e o synaptic fiz uma configuração que encontrei na internet. Alterando os arquivos apt.conf e enviroment para incluir as variáveis com usuário e senha além do ip e porta. Isso me gerou outro problema. Falta de segurança pois agora a o usuário e senha da rede está exposto nas variáveis de ambiente. Alguém tem alguma dica de como faço para não usar este recurso para fazer as atualizações do sistema ou se existe algum modo de criar uma função que me peça a senha toda vez que um programa tentar acessar essas variáveis. Agradeço qualquer ajuda. [Ubuntu-BR] Placa wireless do note desaparece
Olá pessoal. Seguinte, a placa wireless do meu notebook desaparece do nada. Começou na semana passada, tava trabalhando com o windows e acessando wireless normal, dae precisei ir para o linux, como o ubuntu na minha maquina entra quando ta com vontade apelei pro cd do kurumin. Bom, o Kurumin não instalou minha placa wireless mas me disse que podia usar um software que faria a emulação do driver instalado no windows. Então apontei pra minha partiçao de windows e mandei o software da um geito. O emuladorzinho não teve sucesso, não consegui instala nada. Tempo perdido voltei pro windows pra adianta outras coisas e pra minha surpresa a placa wireless não estava mais la. Agora a placa wireless aparece quando da na telha. Já desisntalei o driver, reinstalei, Abri o note e limpei os contato da placa, formatei a maquina e nada. A pergunta é: Alguem sabe me dizer se é possivel de este software do curumim ter mexido em algum software proprietario da placa? Nem sei se tem, mas se tem, o kurumim poderia ter alterado o firmware da placa wireless? Acredito que a placa não tenha queimado, pois as vezes ela aparece e funciona perfeitamente, dai se reinicio a maquina ela vai embora. Ah, é o note hp dv6045nr com placa wireless broadcom... Boa tarde a todos... Pessoal, eu sou meio basicao em iptables e queria ver se conseguia entender o cenario abaixo: Eu estou tentando fazer um firewall basico pra empresa onde trabalho, do tipo, fecha tudo e abre apenas alguns servicos e o q tiver de http vai via proxy transparente pro squid. Bom o script abaixo foi pego da internet e adaptado, estou usando o iptables-save e o iptables-restore para poder me organizar melhor... O Script abaixo ele ate funcionava, pois nada saia ate eu colocar a linha -A INPUT -s 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 -p tcp -m tcp --tcp-flags FIN,SYN,RST,ACK SYN -j ACCEPT, no periodo de testes para poder tes acesso geral. note que essa regra esta comentada agora. Acontece que eu fosse soh usar a linha -A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --tcp-flags FIN,SYN,RST,ACK SYN -j DROP para fechar e tudo estaria ok... mas nao esta... Ele esta deixando passar tudo passar por ele. Estou desconfiado das regras genericas em :INPUT ACCEPT [0:0], :FORWARD ACCEPT [623:549238] e :OUTPUT ACCEPT [53:7004] que elas sejam as responsaveis por estar passando tudo (entenda-se por tudo pop, smtp, messenger, p2p, etc) mas quando eu comento uma delas ou todas elas, tudo para de funcionar inclusive o proxy transparente... Acredito que seu problema não seja um problema de drivers como mencionou o Fabio uma vez que as impressoras funcionavam e estranhamente pararam.. quer dizer: Estavam funcionando e pararam 'do nada'. A fila à qual me referia não eh aquela que geralmente eh limpa via browser em http://server:631 mas sim aquela que fica dentro do próprio /var. Para fazer um teste, faça o seguinte: 1 - Pare o cups 2 - Vá até /var/spool/cups 3 - Dê um ls.. deverás ver que existe uma quantidade significativa de arquivos.. esse é o spool de impressão do cups. 4 - Remova estes arquivos.. [ rm * ] 5 - Reinicie o cups.. Acredito que muito provavelmente as coisas voltem a funcionar.. Tenho essa situação aqui e criei um script que joguei pra dentro do /etc/cron.daily e que, diariamente, faz esse processo todo para mim.. Teste e diga se funcionou ou não.. acredito que funcione. Era uma impressora usb e algumas coisas tinham que ser configuradas na estação para abrir a conexão na porta 9100, isso para impressoras com socket (como eu uso aqui). Corrigindo isso resolveu o problema. Se for este o seu caso, tente das estações dar um telnet na porta 9100 no ip da impressora. **Uma dica, já tentou usar um printserver? Opa, bohrer. Beleza, eu vou tentar reinstalar essa joça. Quando tava fazendo de manha, dando apt-get remove cupsys e install, ele dava um erro logo apos o apt. Para parar esse problema eu coloquei meu cupsd.conf de volta la. Tem alguma forma de fazer o cups ao reinstalar, recriar toda a arvore de diretorio? tipo um apt-get --configure? Acontece que a licença da fonte Tahoma é diferente das demais. Parece que ela só pode ser distribuída junto com uma licença do Windows. Existem duas maneiras de evitar isso: pegar um clone da Tahoma nos sites de downloads e copiar para sua pasta ~/.fonts ou então se virar com outra fonte. Olá! Esse erro: NoClassDefFound normalmente acontece por causa de dependências (de JARs - Java Archives - mesmo) não satisfeitas. Tem certeza que o Java instalou legal? Esse software possui dependências de algum JAR (bibliotecas) adicional? Se sim, deve ter que colocar no diretório de instalação do Java.. JAVA_HOME/lib (no caso de ter instalado o JRE) ou JAVA_HOME/jre/lib (no caso de ter instalado o JDK). Se der erro tenta o JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext pro caso do JDK. So I convinced the publisher that we need to (at the very least) cover both worlds, the proprietary and the OSS. And for the latter I'm using Ubuntu, OpenOffice, and BeanShell (for Java). (We included an Edubuntu screenshot here and there as well.) I thought it would be really cool if we could also distribute an Ubuntu (or Edubuntu) CD with the book, and possibly print instructions in the book for getting such CDs (from shipit?). And this is the reason for posting on the marketing list... Any ideas on how one can go about doing this? Any support available from Canonical? Posting the shipit address is free. As for actually getting cds, for that you would need to email shipit directly. I know they sell cds at cost, so that might be the best route for you to follow. It is compatible with Ubuntu software repositories. The question then becomes one of how can we make K/Ubuntu more complete, 'out-of-the-box'. Well, I'm pretty sure Mint isn't legally distributable in many countries, and as far as I can recollect, the only improvements it makes to that experience are installing by default those illegal packages.
