while we're on the topic of dark themes, i thought i'd feed a couple of (publically successful) dark theme mockups back into the pool. this very basic mockup represents good use of dark colours i think. people responded to it very well in forums/blogs/digg: http://willwill100.deviantart.com/art/Ubuntu-Mockup-Hardy-Heron-74511244 while i'm not taken with the window title style, i do think the artist has done well to leverage dark colours with highlights that appear to be cast by light. there is a logical continuity in the lighting model he/she has used. in this example darker colours are used to add vibrancy and depth rather than simply to 'turn down the lights', reducing both clarity and contrast overall. this other mockup goes darker still while highlighting useability hints with a brown/orange: http://fc02.deviantart.com/fs23/f/2007/323/0/b/Ubuntu_Theme_Mockup___Dark_by_bradwjensen.jpg it is perhaps far too dark for general distribution of course. nonetheless i think it is important to recognise those mockups Ubuntu users have made that many other users respond very positively to. while being far from feasible, it's my belief these mockups ought to be taken as strong hints in a theme design process. cheers, -- julian oliver http://julianoliver.com http://selectparks.net messages containing HTML will not be read. -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art
[ubuntu-art] Some thoughts
Hi All, I have some thoughts, for what they're worth, about the direction and concepts that Intrepid could take. Firstly, if we're going to go orange then I think we should be careful about going too orange. A theme should stay in the background and enhance the focal point, ie the content. An overwhelming, or high contrast theme is a distraction - no matter how pretty it is. Orange is not a background colour! I think it should be the foreground colour - ie title text, titlebar buttons - close, minimize etc. This would also make the orange more striking, instead if drowning the user in it. Ever listened to a beautiful Chopin? Where it ends with a note, a pause, then solfly, the final note - perfection. This last note is what a theme should feel like. This is what Apple consistantly get right. Secondly, we seem to be thinking along the lines of What does an Ibex look like? as a cue for the themes. Perhaps we should be thinking about What is it like to be an Ibex?. I think Intrepid provides a great opportunity to break the mold and take that last note from Apple! What does an Ibex see when it opens its eyes up there in the mountains? What does it feel like to breathe that crisp, clean mountain air? Or munch on that green grass or drink that clear, icy water? Feel like perfection? I think so. I've uploaded a screenshot of my current theme which is along these lines at http://readitsideways.com/screenshot.jpg This is based on the googol theme at gnome-look.org so the titlebar buttons are googlish, but perhaps we could take a cue from the Ubuntu logo and also use circles, but in the logo colours and make the circle thickness the same as the logo's circle thickness? If anyone else thinks that this is a direction worth persuing I'll do a mock up, and then a theme. Re: [ubuntu-art] Whats Up with This?
Well the windows buttons would have to go, and the colors would have to be different. Ken and I discussed, along with in put from Shuttleworth, having a lighter theme and a darker theme. Mark wants to retain most o the colors from the current Human for the lighter theme... Keep on working though. I think what will end up happening is some concepts will be chosen, guidelines will be made, then the art team will work on the project as a whole to make sure it gets done. Ubuntu Moble application and a question on list professionalism
I wanted to pose two questions to the group. And this group as I am a committed reader of it. First is a general nature of the list repartee question: Would it be possible to provide technical responses and opinions sans all the Microsoft bashing, juvenile misspellings and attendant emotional-political ranting? I find it at this point such a drudge to have to cognitively deal with it, parse it, and then dismiss it in order to get to the meat of the given post - assuming there is any meat, and I have found an inverse relationship between the quality and presence of reasoned technical information to the amount of MSFT bashing nonsense. I am wondering if this list could serve as a power of example to the rest of the OSS community that personal religious, emotional, and political rants weaved into technical discussion are not in fact helpful from a technical or engineering perspective, do not reflect well on the OSS or Ubuntu communities, and are exceedingly off-putting to me, for whatever that is worth, as someone who is trying to participate in the Ubuntu and wider OSS communities and learn enough to actually have something to offer. If you wish, please contact me off-list: [EMAIL PROTECTED] for any long serious responses. I do think however that any thoughtful responses would be valuable for all readers of the list. On-list note: Please keep up the great work and fantastic commitment to MID computing! I am very excited to learn more and hopefully contribute as I am working out the high-level functionality and use cases for a video/VOIP presence application for remote health care delivery with some colleagues and contacts, and I am very much wanting to pursue pilots/prototypes using the Ubuntu Mobile platform. Is there anyone out there that might be able to offer some initial guidance? Yesterday I modified the /etc/network/interfaces file, for the eth0 device (wired) I put my office network static IP, mask, etc., and it works. I went to my house, I have a linksys router, I configured my home wireless network and my wireless key using Connect with other wireless network.. and it works. But I can't connect to my office wireless network, for some reason mubuntu can't obtain the information of the DHCP server, is there a way to configure it in command line? Is it normal that the option Manual Configuration did not works? [ubuntu-in] Airtel Broadband dialup howto?
Hi I have been looking around the web for quite a while now, and I can't seem to find any howto, about setting up Airtel broadband (with the ADSL 220BX modem), for those who have a limited connection. I have seen many howtos but all of them suggest changing the settings of the ADSL modem, so that it connects automatically on startup. My friend who needs this, cant do this since he has a limited plan, and wants to dial on demand, like he does on Windoze. I went through the Ubuntu help system, and found a way to use a ADSL PPPoE modem, but it didnt work. Is there anyone who uses such a system? I would be grateful if you share it on the list. This is our greatest challenge. Articles and education about free software in publications such as Linux Format / Magazine / Journal are all well and good but they're largely preaching to the converted. What we need is to spread the word in the wider field. There are still far too many people who don't even know free (as in freedom) software exists nor that it's available.
Lord Magister - Cb Mbel (61) 8141 - 6373 Dignidade, Força e Honra! Novos endereços, o Yahoo! que você conhece. -- Евсюков Денис Анатольевич ICQ: 168 043 475, JID: juev(at)jabber.ru Registered Linux User #442 821 04.07.08, Олег Севостьянов[EMAIL PROTECTED] написал(а): Может сделать грубо галочки Разрешить bittorrent, FTP, HTTP и т.д.
