[ubuntu-art] // successful use of dark colours: 2 examples //

2008-07-04 Thread Julian Oliver
while we're on the topic of dark themes, i thought i'd feed a couple of
(publically successful) dark theme mockups back into the pool.

this very basic mockup represents good use of dark colours i think.
people responded to it very well in forums/blogs/digg:

http://willwill100.deviantart.com/art/Ubuntu-Mockup-Hardy-Heron-74511244

while i'm not taken with the window title style, i do think the artist
has done well to leverage dark colours with highlights that appear to be
cast by light. there is a logical continuity in the lighting model
he/she has used.

in this example darker colours are used to add vibrancy and depth rather
than simply to 'turn down the lights', reducing both clarity and
contrast overall.

this other mockup goes darker still while highlighting useability hints
with a brown/orange:

http://fc02.deviantart.com/fs23/f/2007/323/0/b/Ubuntu_Theme_Mockup___Dark_by_bradwjensen.jpg

it is perhaps far too dark for general distribution of course.

nonetheless i think it is important to recognise those mockups Ubuntu
users have made that many other users respond very positively to. while
being far from feasible, it's my belief these mockups ought to be taken
as strong hints in a theme design process.

cheers,

[ubuntu-art] Some thoughts

2008-07-04 Thread Duncan Austin
Hi All,

I have some thoughts, for what they're worth, about the direction and
concepts that Intrepid could take.

Firstly, if we're going to go orange then I think we should be careful about
going too orange. A theme should stay in the background and enhance the
focal point, ie the content. An overwhelming, or high contrast theme is a
distraction - no matter how pretty it is. Orange is not a background colour!
I think it should be the foreground colour - ie title text, titlebar buttons
- close, minimize etc. This would also make the orange more striking,
instead if drowning the user in it.

Ever listened to a beautiful Chopin? Where it ends with a note, a pause,
then solfly, the final note - perfection. This last note is what a theme
should feel like. This is what Apple consistantly get right.

Secondly, we seem to be thinking along the lines of What does an Ibex look
like? as a cue for the themes. Perhaps we should be thinking about What is
it like to be an Ibex?.

I think Intrepid provides a great opportunity to break the mold and take
that last note from Apple! What does an Ibex see when it opens its eyes up
there in the mountains? What does it feel like to breathe that crisp, clean
mountain air? Or munch on that green grass or drink that clear, icy water?

Feel like perfection? I think so.

I've uploaded a screenshot of my current theme which is along these lines at
http://readitsideways.com/screenshot.jpg

This is based on the googol theme at gnome-look.org so the titlebar buttons
are googlish, but perhaps we could take a cue from the Ubuntu logo and also
use circles, but in the logo colours and make the circle thickness the same
as the logo's circle thickness?

If anyone else thinks that this is a direction worth persuing I'll do a mock
up, and then a theme.

Regards

Duncan

Re: [ubuntu-art] Whats Up with This?

2008-07-04 Thread Salane Ashcraft
Well the windows buttons would have to go, and the colors would have to be
different. Ken and I discussed, along with in put from Shuttleworth, having
a lighter theme and a darker theme. Mark wants to retain most o the colors
from the current Human for the lighter theme...
Keep on working though. I think what will end up happening is some concepts
will be chosen, guidelines will be made, then the art team will work on the
project as a whole to make sure it gets done.

I guess what I'm trying to do is skin the inactive buttons on the

I am skinning the panel in a way similar to the link you provide but

Ubuntu Moble application and a question on list professionalism

2008-07-04 Thread Adam Cassel
I wanted to pose two questions to the group. And this group as I am a
committed reader of it.

First is a general nature of the list repartee question: Would it be
possible to provide technical responses and opinions sans all the Microsoft
bashing, juvenile misspellings and attendant emotional-political ranting?

I find it at this point such a drudge to have to cognitively deal with it,
parse it, and then dismiss it in order to get to the meat of the given post
- assuming there is any meat, and I have found an inverse relationship
between the quality and presence of reasoned technical information to the
amount of MSFT bashing nonsense.

I am wondering if this list could serve as a power of example to the rest of
the OSS community that personal religious, emotional, and political rants
weaved into technical discussion are not in fact helpful from a technical or
engineering perspective, do not reflect well on the OSS or Ubuntu
communities, and are exceedingly off-putting to me, for whatever that is
worth, as someone who is trying to participate in the Ubuntu and wider OSS
communities and learn enough to actually have something to offer.

If you wish, please contact me off-list: [EMAIL PROTECTED] for any long
serious responses. I do think however that any thoughtful responses would be
valuable for all readers of the list.

On-list note: Please keep up the great work and fantastic commitment to MID
computing! I am very excited to learn more and hopefully contribute as I am
working out the high-level functionality and use cases for a video/VOIP
presence application for remote health care delivery with some colleagues
and contacts, and I am very much wanting to pursue pilots/prototypes using
the Ubuntu Mobile platform. Is there anyone out there that might be able to
offer some initial guidance?

Best regards;
Adam

Can't connect to wireless networks

2008-07-04 Thread Rafael Cardenas

Hello, thanks for your answers in the USB install post.

I'm creating this new post to continue about the wireless connection.

Yesterday I modified the /etc/network/interfaces file, for the eth0 device
(wired) I put my office network static IP, mask, etc., and it works.

I went to my house, I have a linksys router, I configured my home wireless
network and my wireless key using Connect with other wireless network.. and
it works.

But I can't connect to my office wireless network, for some reason mubuntu
can't obtain the information of the DHCP server, is there a way to configure it
in command line?

Is it normal that the option Manual Configuration did not works?

It happened also in other public hot spots

[ubuntu-in] Airtel Broadband dialup howto?

2008-07-04 Thread Lut4rp
Hi
I have been looking around the web for quite a while now, and I can't
seem to find any howto, about setting up Airtel broadband (with the
ADSL 220BX modem), for those who have a limited connection. I have
seen many howtos but all of them suggest changing the settings of the
ADSL modem, so that it connects automatically on startup. My friend
who needs this, cant do this since he has a limited plan, and wants to
dial on demand, like he does on Windoze.

I went through the Ubuntu help system, and found a way to use a ADSL
PPPoE modem, but it didnt work. Is there anyone who uses such a
system? I would be grateful if you share it on the list. I can then
update the wiki page as well.

My suggestion is to remove this dial on demand setting because

1.when your Internet connection is unstable you dont have dial again and
again to use Internet .Just turn on the modem whenever you want to use and
turn off when its not required
2.you dont need to search for a tool to dial on demand in ubuntu

From what I know that's a network chip with some proprietary firmware
written on it and the reports tell me it kinda works. There's lot
happening on the mesh network space with something like 70 odd

interesting to see where this goes, there is the 802.11s which I'm

are there 70 odd mesh tech. based on the olpc system or generally,

am also guessing that the mesh networking would have as much to do with the
firmware as the other systems on the mesh.

Third 80.11 b/g/n are backward compatible - b being slowest, then g and then
n so that should not be a problem

My interest is in knowing what kind of mesh network protocol is being used
by the olpc and if it can be emulated by other wifi devices and setup's

will post to some wifi mailing lists and get back with the results

This is our greatest challenge. Articles and education about free software
in publications such as Linux Format / Magazine / Journal are all well and
good but they're largely preaching to the converted. What we need is to
spread the word in the wider field. There are still far too many people who
don't even know free (as in freedom) software exists nor that it's

I think it's time we considered an ongoing campaign, something like an Ask

an advertising campaign where everyone, organisations and individuals alike
can make contributions? I don't know if these are viable ideas but it
strikes me that education is the key. If enough people start asking about
it, even the monolith that is the BBC will have to take note.

Does anyone actually read anything inside it, other than the funnies on

With the news articles moved from the front page, replaced by a giant
photo of Ugly Geek In The News This Week, I don't think I actually read
any of the articles at all anymore. Many of the IT management articles
seem to be puff-pieces for expensive jargon-de-jour training courses,
anyway.

I basically consider it to be a free Dilbert comic + pale imitation of
BOFH + pale imitation of ComputerWorld.com Shark Tank + next week's
animal bedding. My chickens probably read more of it than I do. But it
does look terribly impressive on the coffee table when the wife's
cliquey faux-middle-class playgroup mums come round.

The new less shiny paper is a great improvement, as this absorbs far
more chicken wee and, when shredded, makes excellent nesting material
(six chicks due to hatch out from a Computer Weekly-lined coop this
Sunday; stops the hens from pulling out their own feathers to line the bed).

They should just replace the articles with some interesting geometric
patterns to pique the chickens' interest, and save on journalist
staffing costs.

Along the same lines, all freebie corporate t-shirts should be replaced
by freebie corporate paint-and-decorating boiler suits, or freebie
corporate pyjama tops. That's all anyone ever uses them for, anyway. I
don't think I've actually bought any sleepwear since my first IBM
exhibition in 1992.

Well said, Lucy. You're right, of course, about it being up to us although
my concern is not just for public awareness but also being a loud enough
voice where legislation is concerned. Do we have a loud enough voice to
speak out about legislation (national or international) that may come into
being that rules free software out? The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement
(see: http://www.fsf.org/campaigns/acta/ ) is a case in point.

And getting people interested in something they wouldn't normally care about
is a bit of a mission, I must admit

I removed my .mozilla directory in /home/wulfy. Nothing in /etc,

I reinstall Firefox... I click on Tools/add-ons.. and there is a list
of all the add-ons I used to have waiting to be uninstalled when I
restart Firefox...

sigh Where is Firefox hiding the data? How can I start fresh? I'm
beginning to really hate this program...

Yep. I purged everything. firefox, firefox-2, firefox-3.0. I checked
everywhere I could think of to confirm that. They were GONE. Yet when I
reinstalled, there were the add-ons... *still* waiting to be

BSD - Berkeley Software Distribution. To get more information have a read
through the wikipedia :) One primary difference between linux and bsd is that
in bsd, everything in the system is worked on by a core set of bsd
developers. compare that with linux where hundreds of developers/coders
working on simulataneously/concurrently. plus the focus in lot of BSDs around
is on strong codebase, security and ehnacibility. Everyone knows about
openbsd's popular ssh server. it has pretty well withstood the time so far.

These days bsd's popular choice prevail as an alternative to
windows/linux/solaris. Espceially Freebsd, OpenBSD and Netbsd. there are
more. these were derived from 4.4BSD i think.

have a great weekend folks. Yay!

is the 15 pin VGA or DVI connector in use?

What is the application that you are using to view or edit the images?

Is there smoothing or zooming or image compression going on here you haven't
seen?
What is the file format?
How big is the image in kilobytes?
How big is the image in pixels?

Fuzzy is such a loose word to use here, as the application you use in
windows may actually be doing smoothing without you knowing...

Sumsung do not provide a Linux driver as such.

 Questions:
   * Where in Ubuntu do I go to look at what driver is actually in

The driver in Ubuntus case is actually the video card driver...

   * Are there alternative drivers for my monitor?

Linux and xorg doesn't do monitor 'drivers' as such ...

   * Is there a solution to improving the quality of rendering?

The windows 'driver' is mainly to give hints to the video card about
which screen resolutions to run, which are native and what gamma modes
and colour correction is supported. Mainly so the user doesn't need
to fiddle with them.

Most of these options in Linux/xorg are configurable, however I'm not
sure if these are changeable from the GUI.

Fuzzy is such a loose word to use here, as the application you use in
windows may actually be doing smoothing without you knowing...
I guess I could describe the picture as not being sharp. The line on
diagonal straight edges (say a table) are somewhat jagged.

Yes smoothing would describe what is missing.

Sumsung do not provide a Linux driver as such.

  Questions:
* Where in Ubuntu do I go to look at what driver is actually in
  use?

The driver in Ubuntus case is actually the video card driver...
Noted.

* Are there alternative drivers for my monitor?

Linux and xorg doesn't do monitor 'drivers' as such ...
Noted

* Is there a solution to improving the quality of rendering?

The windows 'driver' is mainly to give hints to the video card about
which screen resolutions to run, which are native and what gamma modes
and colour correction is supported. Mainly so the user doesn't need
 to fiddle with them.
Noted

Most of these options in Linux/xorg are configurable, however I'm not
sure if these are changeable from the GUI.
Okay, I'll try to investigate that.

This response has been very beneficial to my much needed education.
Thank you again . . .

Regards,

Dave

Are you running your monitor at its native resolution in Ubuntu?

Sorry Null, I have a jargon problem. What does native resolution
 mean in this context?

The GUI offers a selection of from 1680x1050 to 720x400. Upon
installation Ubuntu defaulted to 1680x1050. That's what I'm using.

 Regards
 Dave W

Dave, LCD monitors have a native resolution that works well. Unlike
a CRT, when other non native resolutions are displayed on the monitor,
the pixels have to be lit in a way that causes the sharpness to drop
due to the way that LCD works. The first place I would explore with
this is to identify the native resolution of your particular LCD and
ensure you are using that before looking at other causes.

Agreed. You can, however, use a number of other Australian mirrors.
I am currently using Internode's mirror, but there are several others.

ftp.au.debian.org for example has a fast and reliable Ubuntu mirror
 (nice of them!)

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ host ftp.au.debian.org
ftp.au.debian.org is an alias for mirror.linux.org.au.
mirror.linux.org.au has address 150.203.164.37
mirror.linux.org.au has IPv6 address 2001:388:1034:2900::25
mirror.linux.org.au mail is handled by 10 disco.mirror.linux.org.au.

Which iirc lives at ANU. Nice and quick :)
kk

If you open System-Administration-Software Sources and click on
Other on the Download from: selector, you will see quite a range of
 other possibilities under Australia.

using a Telstra Broadband Wireless Modem (USB Key Style) with Ubuntu 8.04.

It has to be simple as I can presently only give these folk email

 Hi Norm,

I successfully got one of these sticks working on a friend's 8.04
laptop, however this friend has a habit of 'meddling' and for some
reason it stopped working. I haven't had time to try fixing it yet.

But, you might like to know that the most useful page I found was this
one : http://quozl.netrek.org/bp3-usb/ - just scroll about half way down
the page to the section Introduction- After becoming the focal point
for Linux support on another Maxon product, Quozl was lent a Maxon
 BP3-USB...

On a related note, one of my pet gripes is these USB Modem type
devices - even in windows, they are a pain in the backside, I know this
from experience as I work for an ISP in Adelaide. I've been waiting for
a router that can be used with Wireless broadband type devices, and we
finally found one that's just been released. No feedback yet, but worth
 a look - http://au.billion.com/product/wireless/bipac7402gx.php - this
device, once configured, means no configuration AT ALL on the actual
 computer!

Anyway, best of luck - would love to hear any success (or stress!)
 stories.

 Callan

I can also recommend the Ericsson W25 wireless routers. We have a few
from Telstra for wireless broadband, their linux based as you can see
the busybox comments on the log page, but I have not been able to
access a shell yet.
They have 4 ethernet ports 802.11b/g two usb ports for printer and hdd
sharing and two phone jacks for using the phone services over that sim
card too.
So nice units, bit expensive though, but we got them included in the
data plans anyway.

Wireless USB Adaptor

2008-07-04 Thread Simon Ives
Recently the Broadcom chip-set based wireless card in my notebook
decided to die. One of the circuits actually fried somehow! Anyhow,
has anyone had any success with Wireless USB adaptors under Ubuntu? At
home my wireless router is a D-Link DSL-G604T capable of both 802.11b
and 802.11g. I'm not sure of what wireless technology is in use at Uni
(Uni of QLD and ANU) though. I'd need an adaptor capable of connecting
to both networks. I'm currently using LAN at home but I'll need some
way of accessing the wireless at Uni after the holidays.

Thanks

The smaller Tascam is reported to work afaik, it's similar to this one:
 http://www.tascam.com/products/us-122l.html
The Problem is that the newer one, US-122L does not work, so if you can
get one without the L it should be fine.
I personally use an roland/edirol UA-25 which has about the same
 features.
There's also an Alesis usb device that is very similar.

If firewire is an option for you, you could try to find a small device
that is known to work. Firewire has some benefits over usb and few
drawbacks, like, not being available on every computer and not working
very well with every firewire controller chipset.

Have a look at alsa-project.org for soundcards in general, freebob.org
and ffado.org for firewire audio devices.

 Good luck

[Ubuntu-BR] Kernel com problemas no HD SATA

2008-07-04 Thread Stanley Mulford

Pessoal
Processador Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz
HD SATA 160 GB Samsung
HDs IDE no comércio.

Sei que existem dificuldades para instalar a cx5600 (já foram resolvidas ??);
E a Lexmark ??

me agradou, no entanto, tenho tido dificuldades para configurar a Acer Orbicam,

extra characters after close-quote

.container_0] ::MSNCAM::SendInviteQueue
invoked from within

uplevel #0 [list $w invoke active]
(procedure tk::MenuInvoke line 50)
invoked from within
tk::MenuInvoke .container_0.#container_0#menu.#container_0#menu#actions 1
(command bound to event)

shorewall.

KDE: Guarddog is the firewall of choice for KDE.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] aptitude search flash
