For now, I'm calling Sebastian's trashcans final. So I'm removing them and the other submissions from the page. Hey Cory et al, I've got an objection to the trashcan that I was not sure I should post, since I don't really know how to treat works in progress. At any size other than the full one, the little ball of trash looks really strange. I suggest moving it over to the right side, so its shape sticks out past the can's somewhat, in order to make more clear that it is not part of the trash can - a mark on it, or scum covering it, or whatever. That, or remove the little piece of trash altogether: the can is just as recognizable and is overall less distracting. Simple, usable icons are better than cute ones in my mind. Then again, I like the current Human icons better than all the ones y'all are currently working on; maybe that's indicative of a bias that should discredit my input in the first place. [ubuntu-in] OT : Theory regarding newer laptops
Hi This is a kind of OT post - following some of the discussion on a suitable laptop that some people were searching for. I too have been searching for a good laptop for some friends (one that works well with Linux and is decently new technology to last a few years). The laptop i am using is a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600. Its a Pentium III with 376 MB Ram with a 20 GB HD - triple booting Ubuntu 7.04 and Windows XP (and 2000). On this laptop everything works - its about 8-9 years old. What does not work is the battery - which maintains charge for about 2 minutes. But hardware wise everything works - as does all the software i need - its a bit slow and the RAM is always fully used. At the same time i also have a Lenovo Thinkpad t 60 - dual core , 1.5 GB RAM, 80 GB HD etc etc. That too is running Ubuntu 7.04 and dual booting windows. This has an ATI X1300 graphics card and has just been under some warranty repairs of keyboard and touch pad and lcd screen replacement. On this everything works except the compfix 3 d effects - i tried installing the restricted drivers but this advanced laptop refuses to budgeand its a pain trying to get graphics to work well, invariably there is some problem with At the same time a celeron desktop and a celeron gateway laptop both run compfiz cube and wobbly windows beautifully. Ok back to my theory which is that the current crop of laptops from most of the companies seem to have a lifespan of just a few years - seemingly till a few months after warranty (about 3 years) and this is because companies are not focusing on longevity of their machines because they want people to buy their latest machines. At the same time lots of us try and get the latest and the bestest (which we can afford) precisely to avoid having to replace early, in fact trying to be future ready . So what do you folk think. The next part is not so much theory as much as an attempted solution - i.e to invest in a top of the line laptop but a cheaper low end current model and plan for replacement in about 2 - 3 years. Obviously, Even 5 years back laptops were rare, and costly. The drastic cutting down of the price naturally explains the shoddy quality of the hardware of most laptops. Doesnt matter which brand you get, they are all exactly the same these days. PS: Im typing this from a 2 year old acer laptop with a MTBC (Mean Time between crash) of 10 minutes because of bad RAM. Also check what is the power supply required by them and if your SMPS can support it. A problem with Ubuntu is that the X-... is too old and all these will work far better on distros like Fedora9 and above on Open source drivers. Hello everyone, I am looking for recommendations for some decent reads. I am currently doing a BTEC National Diploma for IT Practitioners based around Software Development, so anything that applies to this is a plus, although I am generally just looking to learn stuff and expand my knowledge. I would like to get a better understanding of Linux in general and learn more about it, especially the CLI and inner workings, although there are a number of other topics I am interested in. I love programming at college and I am particularly interested in Java and Python. I also found Systems Analysis and Design, Databases, HCI and Web Design particularly interesting areas/subjects. I know that there are plenty of linguistic arguments why these dialects are important and why some (from a linguistic point of view) may be considered languages in their own right. I'm also a passionate believer that the dialects form a vital part of Italy's culture. However, the Italian state classifies these languages as dialects, and not languages. Italian is the language which is taught in schools. All Italians who learn how to read, are taught standard Italian. As far as I'm aware, the number of Italians who could read a dialect but *not* standard Italian is either zero, or else incredibly few. Road signs are not translated into dialect. For that reason, I don't think that it's appropriate to localise Ubuntu into Italian dialects. The number of people it would benefit is minimal and I don't think it would benefit education at all because dialects are generally not part of Italian education. They reflect a different part of Italian culture. We could easily have a long and interesting discussion about the importance and role of dialects in culture and society, and the lack of a genuine distinction between dialects and languages, but in the end I don't think that is relevant to this question. The important point is that Italian is the language taught in schools all over Italy, and that the Italian state does not recognise dialects as official languages [1]. Bèrto, I lack the linguistic knowledge of the relationship between Piedmontese and Italian, but on the technical side I will simply point out that when political issues arose with regards to the relationship between the Catalan language and its Valencian dialect, the solution adopted was to change the general denomination from Catalan to Catalan-Valencian and define a new locale in the form [EMAIL PROTECTED] That is, we have got the ca_ES.UTF-8 (and its variants depending on which land it is spoken: ca_FR, ca_IT, ca_AD) and [EMAIL PROTECTED], which speakers of the dialect can choose if they like. We only translate the Catalan language, and the @valencia dialect translation is done via script. That said, the @valencia is relatively new, and you will see that for example in the GNOME project [1], although defined, there are not many translations for this dialect yet. I must repeat though, that we were forced to do that due to «political» rather than linguistic reasons, and that I do not know whether this applies to your language. I am only mentioning this in case it can be of any help. In addition of Ubuntu, the people at Debian might be able to help as well. Regards, David. I'm Italian, but I don't personally see the beneficial of translating into Italian dialects/minor languages, mainly for practical reason than philosophical or historic ones... We can argue for ages about these POVs, but we would solve nothing. Said that, I see you would like to get a 25% of the distro localized in 3-4 months... that's a though task! I don't know how many people are involved or if they would be involved 8 hours/day, 5 days/week, but 25% of only the GNOME Dekstop is: a lot of strings... I think you would also like to translate OpenOffice, and that's huge (for OO you should contact the PLIO (Progetto Linguistico Italiano OpenOffice) and ask them how to handle all the translation project). I don't know how concrete is your translation team, but I would start by writing guidelines and glossaries, then create a list of the most common pieces of software of the GNOME Desktop and prioritize them based on importance in the environment, common use or most used application. LMHOSTS is a simple text file on the windows end in: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\lmhosts.sam It's basically a line by line text file of host names. Windows will attempt resolution via netbios first, then broadcast, then finally look in LMHOSTS (this can be changed in the registry as well). It's just one more method of working around a screwy network... I am not sure, however, if this will actually display properly in network neighborhood - it may just work during resolution... i.e. when you manually enter the name of the computer. I've checked all the pulse devices, there does not seem to be anything obvious to configure - ok I know nothing about it either. I've almost accepted it as being a fact of life but every so often it gnaws at my mind - WTF do the system sounds not work. I've wrecked one Ubuntu setup trying to find answers - I just cannot do that again:). What exactly do I need to do to pulse audio? Schizoid Rosegarden
Greetings, Rosegarden has a new trick. Right now, it is playing the same file, with two different sets of instruments, through two diffierent sound cards, at two different tempos, at the same time. I use the example files to try to learn how to work with RG. I get sound from some, but not others. Sometimes sound will play from the built-in sound card, even though JACK is set up to use my external USB device. I couldn't get sound from this one (stormy_riders), so I tried assigning instruments to the tracks--I used Hexter. I think I was using the built-in sound on my laptop when doing this. I saved these changes as a new file. Today, I tried to play it, using the built-in sound card, and configuring JACK accordingly. No sound. I decided to plug in my USB sound device, reboot, and try again. I set up JACK to use my external device for both playback and recording. Sound came out of the little laptop speakers instead of the USB device, playing the Hexter patches I'd assigned. I restarted RG, and tried again. This time, sound came out of both devices--the default instruments through the USB device, and the Hexter instruments from the little laptop speakers. Is this a bug, or do I just not get Rosegarden? Despite spending a lot of time with the documentation, I have no control over it. Can anyone tell me how I can control what soundcard it will use, and what instruments it will play? It seems to have a mind of its own, even routing audio independently of JACK. I am wondering if Rosegarden-specific discussions are wanted on this list, or would it be better to join the Rosgarden list? It seems if I'm having trouble, other Ubuntu Studio users might be having the same issues. Pra você ter uma idéia, se eu maximizo o GE a Earth some, se eu deixo no tamanho padrão, a Earth aparece só a metade. Também não acredito que seja problema físico (placa de vídeo) que apesar de ser ching ling, a minha Earth aparecia perfeitamente quando tinha o RWin aqui. Bom, pelo menos houve progresso, pois da primeira vez que instalei o Ubuntu nesse micro, o GE nem abria, quando clicava nele, a tela piscava, tremia, estribuchava, parecia que ia explodir e não abria nada. Com esses pacotes voce vai ter um icone de configuraçao de rede na barra superior do Gnome, facilitando a configuraçao da sua rede sem fio. Espero ter ajudado, boa sorte! Vando, Ao executar um arquivo com extensões não suportadas, normalmente o Totem mostra uma janela para se instalar os codecs apropriados. Se apareceu e você instalou os codecs, então deveria aparecer o vídeo apropriadamente -- a menos no caso do wmv, que pode estar criptografado com o famoso DRM que não possui suporte no Totem. Caso queira fazer na mão, veja no Synaptic todos os pacotes GStreamer e os instale (com excessão aos que tem dbg ou doc no final.) João. [Ubuntu-BR] problema nas atualizações
Olha eu aqui de novo com mais um problema ... quando mando buscar atualizações através do gerenciador de atualizações ele me exibe uma série de itens que eu seleciono e mando atualizar ... só q agora tá aparecendo uma atualização para o k3b(tá escrito backports antes) e outras duas libpq-dev e libpq5 todas aparecem em um tom de cinza e não me permitem selecioná-las para instalação ... todas as outras rodam normal agora essas ficam aparecendo na lista mas não consigo atualizar. Como faço pra resolver isso. Erasmo, Um conselho: a menos que queira ter esses problemas, não habilite as atualizações de backports nem as proposed porque elas não têm suporte. Estão ali para usuários que contribuem com caça de bugs. Quanto às atualizações em cinza, isto acontece porque se você instalasse essas versões elas causariam algum tipo de incompatibilidade com programas já instalados e dependentes das versões atuais dos pacotes; algo conhecido como package hell e aparentemente do passado. Quanto à incompatibilidades de programas escritos para KDE no GNOME, isso é balela. Mas com o Brasero ou mesmo o NeroLinux, para quê o K3B? João. Pois bem, o WMV que possui essa mensagem está com direitos digitais protegidos, e o Totem não lê arquivos com essa criptografia (aliás, acho que com nenhuma). qual outro programa q eu posso usar para reproduzir esses videos (inclusive wmv,ou nao ha nenhum que faça isso?) Eu orefiro o MPlayer para executar minhas mídias visuais (experimente o gnome-mplayer). Toca até tampa de garrafa. [Ubuntu-BR] amsn : parece brincadeira mas não roda no meu ubuntu
Lá vamos nós pela milésima vez ... já tinha até desistido pq o assunto foi discutido por demais aqui na lista, mas vez ou outra preciso usar o amsn, principalmente por conta de seu suporte pra webcam. João eu tenho o emesene aqui em ksa e particularmente acho ele até mais interessante do que o amsn ... apesar de o pidgin ser incontestavelmente meu preferido. Olá pessoal, Instalei o Ubuntu em dois notebooks de amigos e em ambos o som não funciona. Estranhamente, tudo o que eu fiz indica que o som está ok, só que não sai nenhum som. [Ubuntu-BR] VMware... Falta memória
Já fiz de tudo que consegui: Instalei o WinXP em uma Virtual Machine e o Debian em outra, defini o primeiro com 64 MB de memória Ram e o segundo com 32 MB. Consegui rodar cada VM separadamente mas quando tento colocar as duas juntas dá a seguinte mensagem: *Not enough physical memory is available to power on this virtual machine with its configured settings. To fix this problem, power off other virtual machines or adjust the additional memory settings to allow more virtual machine memory to be swapped. Rebooting may allow you to use slightly more host memory to run virtual machines.* Fui em: Edit Preferences Memory Tentei de tudo quanto é jeito, escolhi: Fit all virtual machine memory into reserved host RAM Allow some virtual machine memory to be swapped Allow most virtual machine memory to be swapped O máximo de Host RAM for all virtual machines que aparece pra mim é 360 MB, deixei no máximo sempre. Tentei executar o VMware sempre como root e mesmo assim não adianta, continua dando a mensagem acima. O problema existe, e aparentemente esta sem solução. No meu não aparece nada e as fontes da janela estão horríveis. Já instalei e desisntalei, mas parece que o problema está no GE. Executar como root não é recomendado! No meu caso como tenho um servidor LTSP com vários usuários, fiz o mapeamento especifico para cada um dos usuários, aproveitando assim as restrições do Win2k. Ex: mount -t smbfs //192.168.0.5/compartilhamento$ /home/usuario1 -o codepage=cp850,iocharset=iso8859-1,username=usuario1,password=senha mount -t smbfs //192.168.0.5/compartilhamento$ /home/usuario2 -o codepage=cp850,iocharset=iso8859-1,username=usuario2,password=senha E assim por diante. Como também tenho um programa emulado pelo Wine que usa Letra de compartilhamento para acesso, abri o winecfg e acertei a letra de acordo com o caminho da pasta (Ex: Letra F em /home/usuario1) Se for algo parecido com isso que procura e não entender algo que escrevi pergunta ae. Tenho a seguinte situação Um servidor X que serve para um determinado departamento este servidor no windows esta mapeado para a unidade F: em todas as maquinas clientes este F e na verdade o D compartilhado para uso do programa nas estações. Tenho outros servidores com as mesmas condições cada um com um mapeamento de unidade diferente pode ser Z X Y etc. (não são exatamente estas letras) usuarios de um departamento podem utilizar servidores de outros departamentos o que acarretara a condição de mapear eventualmente até 5 unidades F:,H:, etc O que encontrei não me mostra ou ao menos não entendi como proceder para esta situação, tenho pouca experiencia em linux e nesta empresa estou migrando as estações para o linux, sendo que inicei primeiro nas estações (10) que somente tinham que ter rede e uma emulação no wine de um programa feito em MAMPS pelo netterm onde neste terminal vt100 busca o tal programa MAMPPS. Acabei de instalar o Ubuntu 8.04 em um Intel Pentium III 1.10 GHz, com 256 MB RAM, placa de video Off de 8MB, e Monitor Proview de 17, Audio PCI. Rodando outro sistema junto, Windows XP Professional, 2002, que tem como Adaptador de Vídeo, Trident Video Accelerator Blade 3D Ocorre que parece haver alguma instabilidade no monitor quando usamos a resolução indicada pelo fabricante do monitor 1280X1024: -toda vez que carrega alguma coisa no FireFox, deixa a tela preta na transição do carregamento -principalmente na exibição da área de trabalho fica correndo de baixo para cima, da esquerda para direita linhas horizontais verdes, como se houvesse alguma interferência. Será que alguém sabe como posso resolver isso? Спасибо Вам за ответ. Обновлю сегодня модули Webmin. Хотя, я думаю, причина проблемы не в нем. Webmin работает непосредственно с конфигурационными файлами системы, не используя различные программы настройки, включаемые разработчиками в дистрибутив. Да, запущен постоянно, слушает порт 1, но без моей команды ничего ведь делать не должен. Правильнее было бы написать не вызывался. Использую Webmin только непосредственно со своей машины, доступ к нему из Интернета закрыт бранмауэром. Понадобился для настройки прокси, с тех пор прижился. С уважением. le soucis est que plutot d'utiliser les fichiers stockés sur le CD pour faire l'installation le programme se connecte sur le web pour charger les données nécessaires. Oui, c'est le comportement par défaut. Wubi a besoin de l'image iso. Il la récupère sur Internet. Pour contourner ce problème, copie dans un répertoire Windows, le programme wubi.exe ET, au même endroit, l'image iso d'Ubuntu ubuntu-8.04-alternate-i386.iso. Puis relance Wubi. Je crois, mais peut-être me démentiras-tu quand tu auras fait l'essai, qu'il a besoin de l'image de la version alternate. Mais si tu ne l'as pas, essaie quand même avec l'image que tu possèdes. J'avais réglé le problème avec de la bombe-contact. Ce jour là avec mes gros doigts j'ai peut-être fait bouger le connecteur SATA. Hi. A new finding: This but seems to apply only to USB 2.0 hubs! Because yesterday i purchased a new one, and when at the office and testing it (i got two, one for me and one for the office) i figured out it's a USB 1.1 hub - Windows told me so (Linux doesn't mention tat!) HOWEVER once at home, connected it instead of the old one to my Linux box - and USB sticks mount fine on it!! However the speed with which data is transferred is a disgrace. Reading at 900 KILObytes/second, writing at 1 Megabyte/second. So for now i can narrow this down to a problem that the 2.6.24-21-generic has with USB 2.0 hubs. Best regards. What happens if you change the Library Structure item in the configuration? I believe by default when ripping CD's, it stores in the hierarchy Artist/Album, but you can change that by going to EditPreferences, then the 'Music' tab. You could change it to store by album.
