[ubuntu-in] Touchscreen working on HP tx1000 series tablet with Intrepid amd64

2008-11-15 Thread Vishal Rao
Hello,

In short:

Run sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-evtouch in a terminal
and run the resulting
Calibrate Touchscreen applet in the System-Administration menu to
get touchscreen working!

Long story:

Similar to my earlier email Touchscreen working on HP tx1000 series
tablet with Hardy amd64 at
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-in/2008-May/003018.html I'm
writing this so
that it becomes findable on the net :-)

This time with Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid amd64 it was much easier/smoother
to get touchscreen working!

After a bit of unneeded web searching and finding a potential driver at
http://home.eeti.com.tw/web20/TouchKitDriver/linuxDriver.htm I found
that just running:

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-evtouch

and lo and behold the touchscreen started working after logout and back in.

But the calibration was a bit off and after some more pointless web
searching saw that
there was a Calibrate touchscreen item in the System-Administration menu.

You have to follow the on-screen instructions carefully, first move
the stylus around the screen
so that it goes to all edges and corners (so that the tool can figure
out the X/Y ranges/limits)
then press Enter and be a little patient for the first crosshair to
become red. Then you tap the first
crosshair at the top-left and the next crosshair becomes red which you
have to tap and so on till
you reach the last crosshair at the bottom-right. If you miss one you
can press the right mouse
button to go back. After tapping the last one the tool exits and you
should logout and back
in for the changes to take effect.

All in all, each Ubuntu release (since I started with Feisty 7.04) has
been a steady improvement
for me, luckily havent faced too many of the issues reported on
mailing lists and the forums.
Intrepid is the best so far with wifi, touchscreen, bluetooth, even
the remote control working with
very little effort on my 1-year-old HP Pavilion tx1302au tablet PC.

The only thing remaining is the fingerprint reader which doesn't work
well since the Authentec AES1610
driver isn't in good shape (I think its removed in recent versions) of
the fprint project.

I'll try to update my webpage at http://lahsiv.net/linux/tablet.html
soon, blog about it at
http://lahsiv.net/blog/ and also update the Ubuntu wiki entry.

- Vishal

Yes you can do that using remastersys. Finish customizing your distro however
you want. i.e. you can add / remove packages , configure system settings etc.
Once your done use remastersys to build a custom distro iso. You can then burn
that and use it however you want.

You can use it with the server version as well. All you need to do is install
the server version [non-gui] , change the kernel , remove the old kernel , add
/ remove other apps and run remastersys. It has nothing to do with Gnome.
Although if you install gnome , gnome apps and settings would be included in

Alternatively , you can tell me what apps you want on your Custom CD , Ill
build one for you and upload it to a server / mail it to you.

[ubuntu-uk] Problem installing v8.04 from an imperfet 6.06 setup. Help required

2008-11-15 Thread Louis Gidney

Hello,

After losing my Ubuntu 8.04 setup owing one of
my two hard drives failing, I have just started
the process of installing a freshly downloaded
v8.04 which I hope to put in an empty partition
(already formatted ext3) on my remaining 80GB drive.

I'm pretty confident that the CD is sound,

I'm doing this from a rather sick v.6.06 Dapper,
and I get the following following message at once:

The following problems were found on your system:

E: Sub-process gpgv returned an error code (2)
W: Signature verification failed
   for:/media/cdrecorder/dists/hardy/Release.gpg

I'm pretty confident the CD is sound,

Is this message most likely to be caused by a
fault on the CD ---or by my faulty 6.06 setup?

I don't know what Signature means, here,

( I have no disc W: )

Please advise.

Hi,

The W: is the error message, not a W drive - Linux doesn't assign
drives letters like windows does.

I'd suggest running the following commands from a terminal:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude upgrade

then re-run the CD installer.

HTH,

M.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Configuring Virgin cable modem

2008-11-15 Thread Dan Attwood
Virgin modems don't bind to a mac address any more so it won't be that. I
have a setup very much like steves and that all works fine with ubuntu and
window machines.

you might want to conder geting hold of a network switch, hoking it up to
the windows and ubuntu machine, giving themboth a static ip address and then
just seeing if they can ping each and browse shares just to check that the
network cards are both working fine.

I believe - although i'm not 100% on this, you might need a router - that
you can then plug the cable modem into the switch and give the machines
internet.

You say it has ethernet connections, is it a router as well or do you
have to switch the cable? If you have to switch the cable, are you
rebooting the modem when switching over?

On the old modem we just used one USB cable, and swapped it between PCs.
On the new one, we've added a router, which seems to be compatible with
cable as it's working OK on the XP machine. We each have an ethernet
cable to the router, and then there's a cable between modem and router.
I'm sure all the cables are OK, as I've swapped them around and the XP
 machine always works.
What I really don't follow is the activation - the new modem was
activated through the XP machine, as Virgin techs don't have a crib
sheet for Linux or Firefox. Is that why my Ubuntu machine won't work?
Because the modem thinks the XP machine is the only valid machine that
 can use it?

Actually the modem thinks that the router is the PC. It shouldn't make
any difference which machine connects to the router as long as the
router hasn't got anything like MAC address filtering enabled (which as
far as I know generally only affects machines connecting wirelessly anyway).

 TIA
 Dianne
I'd forgotten how slooo some OS's can be!

Once the modem is activated it should just work. Generally you have to
turn the modem and router off, turn the modem on, leave it 30 seconds to
sync and then turn the router on.

If you go into System - Administration - Network and unlock the
settings what do you get under Wired Connection?

Mine has Roaming Mode disabled and it's set to Automatic Configuration
(DHCP).

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Configuring Virgin cable modem

2008-11-15 Thread Steve Laming
Hi again Dianne,

If you know the IP address of the router, you should just be able to ping
that if the card is working and configured correctly.

I assume that you haven't used the network interface before as you were
using USB.

Can you see it if you do lspci at a terminal?

If not is the network interface on the motherboard? If it is, make sure
it's not disabled in the PC's bios. If it's a PCI card, Make sure it's
seated properly.

Looking on the Ubuntu forums, it doesn't appear to be a particularly common
problem which makes me think that it *MAY* be a hardware issue.

Do you have access to another card to try?

[ubuntu-uk] Problem installing v8.04 from an imperfect 6.06 setup. Help requested

2008-11-15 Thread Louis Gidney
Replying to : Matthew Macdonald-Wallace
(Greetings from Ardnamurchan Peninsula, Scottish Highlands)

Dear Matthew,
Thank you for your prompt reply to my plea for help.

I've done:
   sudo aptitude update
   sudo aptitude upgrade
as you suggested.

Something called postgresql-8.1 seems to prevent
successful completion --as you will better understand
than I, (an ordinary user) from some lines of the terminal
upgrade process pasted further below.

Btw, for a long time now, this error has prevented successful
completion of regular upgrades (orange icon on top bar)
using Add-Remove/Synaptic, which gives this error:-
  E: /var/cache/apt/archives/postgresql-8.1_8.1.13-0ub
 untu0.6.06_i386.deb: subprocess new pre-removal
script returned error exit status 1

But /my work is important to me/ (more so than
having the very latest version) so I have soldiered
on with it, in the state it is.

But it's high time I got away from this 6.06 setup, back
to a fresh 8.04 such as I had on the now defunct hard drive.

Does postgresql /need/ to be fixed before I can go further ?
CAN it be mended ?
If so how ?
(There are now 331 upgrades waiting at the orange icon)

BUT if I can install the fresh 8.04 without them, then
there seems little point in bothering with that (?).

/I'm not sure how to get the install process started/.
It is not immediately obvious to me which prog on the CD
IS the installer.

If the install can be made start, I hope it will offer an
opportunity to 'tell it' /where/ to install.

I don't want it to overwrite and obliterate my one surviving
unbuntu (the v6.06 I'm using).

As far as I can tell, the CD image is not a live disc.
I downloaded it from:-
http://releases.ubuntu.com/hardy/ubuntu-8.04.1-desktop-i386.iso
so it seems I can't operate 'from' that as a 'live CD'.

I notice that it has some .exe files (not a Linux filetype is it?)
Could this CD be a version that assumes MS Windows or DOS is present?
I do not have Windows at all now.

Btw, Nautilus is unable to 'open' either my new hard drive
(which came formatted MS NTFS) or other partitions on
the current drive, and gives the message:-
error: device /dev/hde4 is not removable
error: could not execute pmount

Apologies for being verbose (in spite of trying to make it briefer).

In hope that you can help,

regards,
Louis

PS An afterthought:
For my relatively simple needs (mostly writing plain text),
I had wondered whether 'Xubuntu' would serve -for a while at least.
Any comments? In particular:-
would it be any easier to install, given the present
dire state of my existing 6.06 setup?

Hmmm, do you know if you are using Postgresql? an easy way to find out
is to type the following:

sudo netstat -antpu | grep -i listen

and paste the response into your reply so I can see what's running.

It looks like there is an issue with the postgresql package, so it may
be worth running:

sudo aptitude clean
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude update

If you could also post the content of /etc/apt/sources.list, that
would be great.

I'm traveling tomorrow however I'll take a look at this when I reach
my destination if no-one else has leapt in.

Kind regards,

Matt.

Intrepid Installer Doesn't Talk

2008-11-15 Thread luke
Hello

I saw a couple of October messages about this in the archives, but I
believe they were both before the official release.

While orca comes up talking in the live CD portion of the desktop
installer, the installer itself will not talk for me, on any of the
systems on which I tried it.

I don't know if there is supposed to be other sound in the installer, but
I never hear the amp reset click which usually accompanies sound card
detection either, let alone the startup sound which the livecd emits.

I tried both the version of the desktop CD available from ubuntu.com's
downloader, as well as the most recent daily build.

Any word on what is (not) happening here, or how to fix it?

Thanks and regards,

Luke

I like the blue in Ubuntu Studio much more than orange in Ubuntu. It
gives it more state of art look. And I think it is better suited for

What about focusing more about choosing an packaging applications, user

I ask this question because Intrepid is worse than Hardy LTS to make

You imply that one is more important than the other. If you have issue

this one.

Yep. So use Hardy. It's what we even recommend in the release notes.

Icons in the fast-user-switching menu: mock

2008-11-15 Thread Manu Cornet
Hi all,

The new Shutdown/Suspend/etc. actions in the top-right
fast-user-switching applet look great! However, I was wondering if
adding icons next to the menu items (as we usually do in GNOME) would
be a good idea? Or do you think it would add too much clutter?

Here is a mock:

Hey Fernando,

You now gave me another idea...
Why not use also the user avatar as an icon attached to the nick??

Hmm, I'm not sure I'd be happy seeing my own picture on the top-right
of my session at all times (or did I misunderstand your suggestion?).

These kinds of icons are here, I think, to convey some kind of
information. Putting icons next to menu items helps, in my opinion,
identifying them faster. A status icon also provides information.
Having my face next to my name doesn't really give me anything, I know
what I look like :-)

continuarei tentando resolver o quanto antes.

Ele diz aceitar somente Windows e Mac

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] O TV Terra nao funciona no Linux

2008-11-15 Thread Douglas G. Oechsler

aqui to fazendo tudo sem problemas.

Espero ter ajudado!

Abraços

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Swap, qual tamanho?

2008-11-15 Thread Felipe Tanus
Oi,

do processador e ele gasta a maior parte do tempo atualizando as
tranca);

Indeed, Planet is easy to configure...

 http://www.pingouin-barbu.info/planet/

This is my first test... on the same server as ubuntu-be.org

So, we'll need either three (four ?) planets, either a trilingual
 (fourlingual) planet

Personnaly, the two choice seems cool.

But, I propose to open a page on the wiki and put the RSS links you want to
 see on the planet(s) ?

 This is still a test.

After this test, we'll see if we'll integrate it or not.

For the feeds, the syntax is

 [http://url of the rss feed]
name = name of the feeder
face = if you want to put a picture (hackergoshi) of the feeder
facewidth = width of the pic
faceheight = height of the pic

I will centralize them in a config on the server and cron it 6 times a day.

 Regards
 Cedric

The Aggregator module in Drupal looks like this
http://ubuntu-be.org/aggregator. Any registred member can get the admin
right to add/remove feeds, defines feed category (one for each language ?)
and allowed HTML tags (with the the current default configuration, some post
 are hard to read.).

[Ubuntu-be] Intrepid LoCo cd's to release party Hasselt

2008-11-15 Thread Roel Huybrechts
Hello,

I heard our Intrepid cd's should have arrived a few days ago. It would
be nice if we could have +/- 50 of them (normal Ubuntu) on the release
party in Hasselt (22nd of November).

I don't know where the cd's are at the moment nor if that person is
coming to Hasselt, but hopefully something can be arranged to transport
the cd's in either case :)

Greetings,

Roel

Geachte,

Apache, Joomla, Openoffice.org, Scribus, enz...) voel ik me persoonlijk

Vriendelijke groet,

Re: [Ubuntu-be] Planet Ubuntu-be ?

2008-11-15 Thread mongolito404
Hi,

We are talking about the installation of a Planet site for Ubuntu-be. A
Planet is an site which aggregate content from personnal blogs of members of
a community. It allows interested readers to easily and quickly follow
what's going on in the community without the need to track individual sites
themself. The idea is to leverage the exisitng work of the members to help
to create a community feeling. I don't think that's the kind of thing you
will learn in your studies but it is a common pratice in many Open Source en
Free Software communities.

The ongoing discussion is about which (server side) software to use for the
Ubuntu-be Planet. I'm in favor of a Drupal (the CMS enfine used for the
Ubuntu-be website) module which will mean the Planet could be fully
integrated to the Ubuntu-be website. I asked for expected features to help
me choice between the various Planet-like Drupal modules. Others are
suggesting to use planetplanet which is the original software (if I'm
correct) that created the concept. Planetplanet is easy to install
administer but won't be fuly integrated with the Ubuntu-be website.

PS: Could you please try to follow the advice on top of the daily digest and
modify the Subject line of your mail when replying.

Re: [Ubuntu-be] Nieuwe Adobe CS4 Producten + Panda 2009

2008-11-15 Thread Vincent Van der Kussen
Jurgen,

Dit melden o.a. talrijke

Eclipse 3.4 на Ubuntu 8.10

2008-11-15 Thread Jury Levykin

 /index.php HTTP 1.x
 iptables.
 # iptables -A INPUT -s %IP% -j DROP

Apache.

[Bug 298374] [NEW] Samba daemon not starting

2008-11-15 Thread Knad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

Hello,

Modified my smb.conf last night to allow guest access. I then restarted
samba and all worked well. Now this morning when I turned it on sabma
has not started. When i run 'restart' it says it is ok, btu then it is
not running:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart
 * Stopping Samba daemons[ OK ]
 * Starting Samba daemons[ OK ]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/samba reload
 * Reloading /etc/samba/smb.conf smbd only
No process in pidfile `/var/run/samba/smbd.pid' found running; none killed.
 [ OK ]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

As you can see, if I try to reload straight after, it states samba is
not running. Also if I just try to access it (not reloading) I cannot
connect.

smb.conf attached.

[Blueprint groupware-server] Groupware Server

2008-11-15 Thread Guy Van Sanden
Blueprint changed by Guy Van Sanden:

Whiteboard changed to:

2006-12+21 khaeru: might this be handled by the ubuntu-server-tasks spec?
é
21/12/2006 - I think we should pick an existing suite, i.e. hula and then
create the ubiquitous middleware to achieve what we want

13/07/2007 (stephan-impilinux) - We have recently evaluated a load of
these solutions and have some professional experience in it.

2008-06-07 (pixelpapst) - Just a quick reminder that the hula project
ist effectively dead since late 2006, and the community created a fork
called bongo project. However, by now they ripped out all of Hula's
LDAP connectivity, which makes this a very pretty but useless solution
for SmallBusinessServer.

2008-06-08 (Guy Van Sanden) Citadel seems a very good choice. IT offers many
features (including a Jabber server) and is completely GPL'ed.
The only caveat is that it does not have LDAP support (yet)

2008-06-19 (Art Cancro) -- yes, definitely go with Citadel. Ubuntu
packages are already being maintained, and the project would be
delighted to cooperate with the Ubuntu team on integration issues.

2008-06-19 (Todd Hanna) I would also like to give a big +1 to Citadel.
They already have the .debs and there is even a connector to use it as
an Exchange replacement if you have clients using Outlook. I have run
it without issue on Ubuntu server since version 6.06. It's head and
shoulders above the rest at the moment.. and it is easy to setup,
update, and maintain.

2008-07-08 (Stuart Cianos) - I'll also give major points to Citadel, and
have been a longtime user of it. It is the only open-source groupware
package that is self maintaining and straightforward to configure.

2008-07-09 (Stephan Buys) - Please also dont forget Kolab (Citadel
implements the Kolab v1 format). Kolab has 3 plugins for Outlook,
support Horde Webmail, Thunderbird/Lightning and Kontact.

2008-07-09 (Guy Van Sanden) RE Kolab - Kolab is not a full groupware
AFAIK, it does not have a web interface. Correct me if I'm wrong.

2008-07-09 (Christian Merlin) Remember also SOGo
(http://sogo.opengroupware.org/) it use LDAP for users and PostgreSQL
for database. So It could be easy to integrate with Ebox (http://ebox-
platform.com/). So Ubuntu can became an'easy and powerfull groupware
server like the commercial one.

2008-07-10 (Stephan Buys) Kolab does have a web interface (for admin and
email) through Horde (www.horde.org). Calendars, Contacts and Tasks can
be shared between Outlook/Kontact/Horde/Thunderbird

2008-07-10 - Personally I prefer bongo, however it is still in its
infancy. It has a great UI, and is targeted at being simple to install
and use

2008-11-14 - (Guy Van Sanden) Zarafa is becoming an option too. It was
AGPL'd recently and offers many features including CalDAV in the
upcoming 6.30 release.

2008-11-14 - (Stuart Cianos) Only the server-side components of Zarafa
were opened up... There are still numerous proprietary functions that
are unavailable in the AGPL version. There are plenty of completely open
solutions out there (Horde, Citadel, Kolab, etc.) Personally, I use
Citadel (with Funambol for push e-mail) due to its funtionality,
reliability, speed and flexibility... They also have a fantastic
developer/user community that is supportive and communicative.

2008-11-15 - (Guy Van Sanden) @Stuart Cianos Actually most of it seems to be
in the AGPL version except for the client license required for Outlook usage.
Which is logical, if you are paying for closed source outlook you should also
pay for the connector...
I know about citadel, have been running it for 2 years but it does have some
issues and lacks certain features like LDAP integration.

[Bug 211631] Re: CIFS/SMBFS shares not unmounted before network is shut down

2008-11-15 Thread meestermole
Why isn't this fixed after so long? The big thing keeping me from
switching to Linux full time is that i run into these type of bugs, and
no sooner do i get them fixed and feel like i've made progress that
ANOTHER bug shows up. The more I want to do with my system, the more
bugs I need to find workarounds for. This one is a bit over my head, I'm
afraid. Seeing many posts about a bug that has existed for years does
not give me much hope.

[Bug 290555] Re: munin-node ships #!/bin/sh scripts with bashims

2008-11-15 Thread Daniel Hahler
Thank you for your bug report.

However, the ups_ plugin in Jaunty (where I checked it, uses /bin/bash
as interpreter) and I could not find the plugin in a Hardy installation.

So I guess you've installed it manually.. please post the output of
dpkg -S usr/share/munin/plugins/ups_, which should display the package
where the file is from (if any).

[Bug 211631] Re: CIFS/SMBFS shares not unmounted before network is shut down

2008-11-15 Thread flaccid
I think the problem lies with the lack of action on behalf of people with power
to commit fixes such as Canonical sponsors.
I gave up on Ubuntu's management a long time ago. Where are the chiefs?

2008-11-15 Thread Michel Leunen
Marianne CHIGNIER a écrit :
