Right click doesn't work too. ok . guys an update with my ubuntu 8.10 intrepidwhen i perform lsusb then one entry is stated as AnyData Corporation which is for the usb-modem. although lspci gives no similar entry. so my question is that since it is showing up in lsusb does it mean that the kernel recognises it? does it mean that the kernel supports it? if so, then can anyone tell me how to get it working? or does it just mean that it's detected in usb port but the kernel neither recognises nor supports it? Old Kernels . . .(never die!)
I am running Ubuntu 8.04. It boots up on Kernel version 22. However, when booting up I am presented with several lines relating to older Kernel versions and their respective recovery mode. Obviously automatically saved as updates are installed. I read somewhere that old versions should be removed as they slow down the booting process. Though I don't really have any complaint about what seems to me to be a quick bootup anyway. It's just that I don't like all those lines of information in my face. So I have some questions please: 1. What is the purpose of storing the old kernel versions? 2. Any reason why I should not delete the oldies? (And/or maybe just save the last superseded one?) 3. How would I go about deleting them? Any reason why I should not delete the oldies? (And/or maybe justsave the last superseded one?) You can delete if you know which one you want to delete. I always keep two. 3. How would I go about deleting them? You can either open the boot menu (sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst) and alter the number of displayed kernels to 2 rather than the default of All (this will not remove anything but merely remove them from display) or you can install-StartUp Manager (sudo apt-get install startupmanager) which will give you a GUI. While you are there, in either method, you can also shorten the boot delay time from the default 10 seconds to (say) 3 seconds. I personally keep the previous kernel for a few days to make sure that everything works properly. 3. How would I go about deleting them? Using GNOME go system admin synaptic package manager Search for linux-image Don't try to remove the highest numbered entry (that will be the kernel you are running) For the remaining linux-image-2.6.xx-y* entries, just right click on them and select Mark for complete removal. It will ask you to confirm that you also want to remove the related restricted modules package as well. When done click Apply. Confirm that you are happy with the changes by clicking apply. Exactly, my hope is to build a working 2.6.24 kernel that's made for intrepid, and put it in a ppa. Right now, I've been using hardy and recompiling a bunch of applications that I want/need newer versions of (ardour comes to mind). So I figured instead of upgrading dozens of applications under hardy, all I need to do in intrepid is to build an older kernel instead. But I want to that according to all rules of the game, so to speak. I know this isn't the best list to ask questions related to ppa, but since I'm only going to build ubuntustudio related stuff, I'm gonna go ahead and ask my questions anyway :-) The thing is, the error I posted above was given by the ppa-builder on the 386 build. Jack with external and internal audio interfaces
Hi, When I start Jack with my firewire device the I/O's of the onboard audio disappear and only the 10 I/O's of the firewire device show in the connection list. If I start audacious and tell it to output to Jack, then two more outputs show in jack and can be routed to the firewire outputs. Is there a way to tell the onboard I/O's (headphones, mic, etc) that is (I'm guessing here) under the control of Alsa to direct these to Jack? But in cases where it's clear that a QT/KDE app is better it beats out GNOME. I think we have come to one such example. I have been playing with the latest Fontmatrix and I think it outmatches GNOME Specimen clearly in 2 areas. * The ability to display fonts not installed. * And finally the ability to enable them. There are also other nice little pluses but I'll let you guys figure those out. I'm new to Ubuntu Studio, only a 3 months or so. (Though I've been designing hardware and developing software for, well, longer than I like to remember.) :-( I've installed Ubuntu Hardy then added the studio apps. I've installed from the the DVD image. Then I installed the 64bit dvd image. All fresh installs on the same machine, a Dell XPS laptop. The only complaint I have with the default wallpaper and color scheme is a lot of apps have contrast issues. By issues I mean where I can't see the text because of the background. Could be my old eyes...so, I've just changed to schemes where I can see. My $.02 FWIW. Pessoal, Alguém já instalou o Windows XP através do Virtualbox? Estou pensando em sair do dual boot para a virtualização, mas estou cheio de dúvidas e o site do virtualbox ainda está incompleto. A primeira dúvida que me surge agora é sobre o disco virtual, pode ser criado dentro da partição / ou é melhor usar uma partição separada? eu tenho 30 GB para o / . Acho que dá para o linux e o windows juntos. Mas será que o virtualbox exige muito espaço do /home? Meu /home tá em um hd antigo só com 8 GB. No futuro penso em migrar para o hd novo que instalei, com 200 GB. Mas por enqunanto vou esvaziando o /home aos poucos. Todos os arquivos grandes, como filmes e músicas estão indo para o hd novo. Quem usou o virtualbox teve sucesso? Foi melhor que o VMware? Funciona perfeitamente, inclusive tenho uma máquina celeron 800Mhz com 1G de ram rodando Ubuntu UNR + Virtualbox com XP sem problemas. O espaço ocupado é dinãmico, ou seja, o arquivo que simula o HD do windows aumenta à medida que vai sendo usado e como ele é apenas isso, um arquivo, pode estar em qualquer lugar que o host (neste caso linux) puder enxergar, até em uma outra máquina. [Ubuntu-BR] problema com GRUB
Saudações Senhores, Feliz 2009 à todos! Trago aqui um impasse que me surgiu: Tenho o Ubuntu 8.10 instalado no meu notebook (sda) e resolvi instalá-lo no pendrive tb (kingston data traveler 8GB) (sdb). Para isso utilizei o meu live-CD do Ubuntu e prossegui a instalação e na hora de escolher o dispositivo, escolhi o pendrive. Formatou e instalou tudo direitinho, mas agora veio o problema: Para eu iniciar o Ubuntu do notebook eu preciso do pendrive, pq quando eu tiro o pen dá um erro (erro21). Parece q ele n encontrou o grub ou coisa parecida. Estou dependendo do pendrive para iniciar pelo notebook. Alguém pode me orientar sobre como transferir essa autoridade que está no pendrive para o notebook? Já mudei as opções de boot. Procurei nessa lista e n encontrei este caso específico e procurei na internet mas n encontrei informação clara a respeito, somente casos parecidos. Olá Xisberto! Obrigado pelo Feedback. Eu já havia tentado pelo Sistema Administração Create a USB startup disk. Formatei (como solicitado pelo SO) configurei tudo certo, mas na hora de dar o boot ele n reconheceu (assim como o pessoal da lista já comentou alguns casos iguais a este). Por isso tentei pelo método que falei. Eu já li alguns casos parecidos e como n encontrei, mandei a mensagem aqui para o grupo. Testei o pendrive em um Acer One, em outro desktop e em um laptop e funcionou em todos eles. Voce pode usar o virtual box para qualquer aplicação, só lembrando que será uma virtualização, portanto não terá o mesmo desempenho que uma maquina real. Aproveitando (vai com português misturado... vale até 2012 mesmo...) Eu usava o VMWare no OpenSUSE, mas qd migrei para o Ubuntu, achei mais fácil utilizar o VBox por já constar no repositório... Formatei (como solicitado pelo SO) configurei tudo certo, mas na hora de dar o boot ele n reconheceu (assim como o pessoal da lista já comentou alguns casos iguais a este). Por isso tentei pelo método que falei. Eu já li alguns casos parecidos e como n encontrei, mandei a mensagem aqui para o grupo. Mas quando encontrar a resposta (se n for aqui mesmo na lista) eu mando pra cá. :-) Bem, espero então que consiga ao menos consertar seu grub. Teste o comando sudo grub-install hd0 Onde hd0 é a nomenclatura do Grub, e não do Linux. Parece q ele n encontrou o grub ou coisa parecida. Estou dependendo do pendrive para iniciar pelo notebook. Alguém pode me orientar sobre como transferir essa autoridade que está no pendrive para o notebook? Já mudei as opções de boot. Procurei nessa lista e n encontrei este caso específico e procurei na internet mas n encontrei informação clara a respeito, somente casos parecidos. Provavelmente os casos parecidos vão te ajudar. Leia sobre o Grub e como reinstalá-lo no HD. Agora uma coisa, porque você instalou em vez de criar um disco bootável no pendrive? Boa noite. Antes de mais nada feliz ano novo a todos. Bem, é o seguinte: Eu estou querendo instalar um servidor de midia em minha casa (quem nao quer ne?). Eu andei lendo sobre o mythtv e achei muito legal, ai eu vi o MCE. Instalei o MCE e vi que ele roda sobre o mythtv, e também li que ele gerencia vários dispositivos difernetes, entre PDA e celulares, bem como sensores de alarmes. Alguem ja conseguiu instalar um Mythtv ou mesmo o MCE? Eu tenho uma placa de video funcionando legal, so que nao consigo capturar os vídeos, onde eu os recebo via RCA (SKY). [Ubuntu-BR] Problema de conexão com rodeador wir eless após uso de pppoeconf.
Eu utilizo o Ubuntu 8.10 64bits desktop, em principio com conexão com a internet com fio através de um rotedor wireless D-Link DI-524, ligado a um modem adsl D-Link DSL-500B em conexão Speedy. Ocorre que estruturada dessa maneira a conexão no Ubuntu 8.10 é feita automaticamente ao inciar o sistema sem a necessidade de nenhuma configuração adicional, já que o roteador D-Link DI-524 (utilizado com fio por mim) faz a autenticação. Porém ao retirar o roteador D-Link DI-524 e efetuar a conexão com fio diretamente no modem D-Link DSL-500B, tive que rodar pppoeconf, através do qual tive conexão perfeita. Atualmente me deparo com o seguinte problema, preciso novamente inserir o roteador wireless D-Link DI-524 entre minha maquina e o modem D-Link DSL-500B, para que outros computadores da rede domestica tenham acesso wireless, e partir daí, após ter rodado pppoeconf não consigo mais ter a conexão como ela estava estabelecidade anteriormente, não tenho conexão alguma utilizando esse esquema que antes não necessitava menhuma configuração adicional. Ao que tudo indica, posso atribuir isso ao fato de ter rodado pppoeconf. Quero saber como posso restabelecer minha conexão original, usando com fio um roteador wireless para mediar a conexão entre a maquina e o modem, após ter rodado o pppeoconf? Pinguei (ato de disparar ping contra o servidor, hehe) o endereço indicado pelo script e não obtive respostas... Vlw a atenção! PS.: com essa nova versão não dá mais para editar o arquivo do script? O roteador entregava o ip por DHCP? Ola amigos Ha alguns dias pedi ajuda para me conectar a internet e recebi duas respostas que pediam mais informacoes (marca do modem e resposta de comandos). I think the video should also target users never heard about Ubuntu. Therefore the vid should show what Ubuntu is. The way Shahriar suggested below could be a good way to show people what Ubuntu is and what a user can do with Ubuntu. A vid capaign should wake up the interests of new users and in my opinion the best way to do that, is not only to say a name, it also should give more information on the what is Ubuntu. One question that I frequently have to answer Can I do this this in Linux? or I am an professional _ _ _ _, can I do _ _ _ _ in Ubuntu Linux? That is what we need here is that showing people what they can do (if possible what they can do better) in Ubuntu Linux (or any Linux distro in that manner). Hello: I'm not 100% sure of this but since the Linux Foundation is running this contest, and that they are not going to pick a video that promotes a particular flavor of Linux as the winner. Which is why I thought that using Tux the penguin, created by Larry Ewing as the central feature would be a good idea. Telling people that don't even know something called Linux exists, about all 350+ flavors in existence, is only going to scare them away. It may be better to tell them they are using it right now, since most of the websites they visit everyday are running on Linux based machines. Why ? Because people with rooms full of computers don't want to pay $2500 each for Windows Server Enterprise License for every system that they need to run their business. Because Linux server software is available for free, and is more reliable. That means that they can use that money for other things,: for example, increasing their bottom line. Now, let's talk about the desktop market which is dominated by Microsoft and Apple and the ordinary computer users that don't even understand that they are paying anything for Windows. Why would they ? When Windows is installed on the new computer that they just bought at Mega-Box-Mart for $350. The marketing majors here understand that advertising can be fun, but not so much fun that people can't figure out what your are selling. If you can eat it, drink it or smoke it, then people already know what the product is and what it can do for them. That's why beer companies run a lot of fun advertising. The Pc vs. Mac ads are using the Identify the Pain and sell the cure approach, it should be obvious that the pain is the PC and the cure is the MAC. These ads have been drilled into people minds on T.V. (at least here in Florida) and adding Linux to this going against the grain and that could make Linux look like a either second rate product or just a joke. Of course, we do not want that to happen. We all know that Linux is neither second rate or a joke, but we aren't who we are selling to. As an added bonus; Here's even a bigger problem with PC vs. MAC, thing, it's a hardware fight and Linux [software ] can run on both PC and MAC hardware, especially now since Apple has moved to Intel based processors. Now where exactly do I buy a Linux ? Good Luck, We wish that we had the resources to win this thing, but we would need to hire animators and buy expensive equipment that we can't afford. For the record: I love Ubuntu. I know people that have used GNU/Linux in some flavor for years that do not know about Ubuntu. This campaign got kicked out by the Linux Foundation and we have picked it up. From a marketing perspective it makes sense to focus on Linux and then in Ubuntu as the GNU/Linux by *default* (let's face it, Ubuntu is desktop Linux' default, like it or not). This ad campaign is targeted towards desktop users right? Using Linux and Ubuntu in our sentences makes much more sense, than just staying close to our narrowness. just a thought... ubuntu 8.10 le son s'arrête

I have bypassed the problem for Gnome applications by reverting to OSS. For me, Pulse and ALSA simply crackle and ESD fails completely. The Phonon/Xine backend works fine in the K environment. My main concern is that flash 10 exclusively supports Pulse, so until we can get a permanent fix, flash will be audio-less. The codec for my chipset is listed as: Realtek ALC888 I just finished installing and completely updating Kubuntu and Ubuntu minutes before adding this comment. Mike, you have three soundcards according to the alsa-info script output. The first one (card 0), ALC888, has two outputs, one analog and one digital. Second (card 1) is that your USB speakers seem to have its own soundcard output. Third is audio output over HDMI (card 2).
