[ubuntu-art] Tricky Wiki

2009-04-02 Thread Thorsten Wilms
Hi!

Have a look at:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/
and then:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Artwork

Do you agree that the Fedora people are like 10 miles ahead in style and
structure there?

First, the 2 level of links are confusing. Having always available top
level links could be good. but that isn't what happens currently.

The link block with /Archives /BreatheIconSet ... is ugly. Can our
wiki software do better?

The NEXT ARTWORK MEETING block is rather embarrassing. I would like
to remove it and the linked page, if I may.

Roadmap sounds like there would be something specific. As long as
there's just the global release schedule, I think a link on the current
Incoming page would suffice. At the very least Roadmap should be
renamed to Release Schedule.

I would like to merge the Getting Involved and perhaps also the FAQ
with the main page.

Then I would like to keep only a link to current Incoming, Archives,
BreatheIconSet, Official Artwork, Guidelines ...

ReportingPage seems to be very much obsolete

WarningTheme and Powder can be moved to Specs (which should be written
out as Specifications)?

GutsyIconsReview can be moved to Incoming/Gutsy or to Specs?? In the
later case, the Gutsy should be dropped.

Or both GutsyIconsReview and NewHumanTesting could go to a new
section called Feedback.

I would collect stuff from Documentation, CommunityThemesGuidelines
and KyudoGuidelines below Guidelines. I'm _considering_ to use the
Kyūdō motive as opener there, but to otherwise dissolve the brand.

In all of that, I wouldn't worry about breaking links in the mailing
list archive or blog posts, because I think clearness and a good base to
build on is more valuable than archive material few will ever look at.

After such restructuring, one might go through the Fedora wiki to copy
good bits we lack.

[ubuntu-art] Simple logo for Karmic.

2009-04-02 Thread Saleel

Yeah, I know Jaunty is not even out the door yet.

But I have been doing research on koalas. (Well I call it research, it
is in retrospect, looking at baby koalas, and awwing away the

believe someone called Ajcham suggested having a simple idealized animal
logo for jaunty, and I rather liked that idea. I think we should try
that for karmic.

Suggestions/ Comments all appreciated.

This kinda ties in with the meetings box from above, and was required of every

Yes, on all of the above. Things have slowly progressed to their current state

[ubuntu-art] [Breathe] BZR upload April 2nd 2009

2009-04-02 Thread Cory K.
These revisions apply to both trunk (rev.59) and the packaging branch
(rev.28).

* ADDED: all of the new flash media. symlink to link scanner.* to
  xsane.*
* MISC: shuffled around power icons. (mostly symlink work)
* UPDATED: build files

There's still a couple of general submissions that need cleaned up on
the wiki. If they aren't attended to in the next week, I will remove them.

Moin is a very flexible system. To be frank, our theme is ancient, we
can reap tremendous improvements by updating that. Also, we have the
ability to create macros for common tasks such as generating some
HTML. For example (I'm not suggesting this would be useful here) a
macro can be created that embeds a youtube video into a page.

Interestingly (or maybe unfortunately) enough, the person to talk to
on the matter is me. There is a project to re-design the Ubuntu.com
website which will start later this year. Therefore I'm hesitant to
make sweeping changes at this point. But I can add some styles to the
default stylesheets and work on some macros that teams could use for
their project pages.

[ubuntu-art] Creating icons for the future, FreeDesktop, Human and Breathe.

2009-04-02 Thread Cory K.
In creating the Breathe icon set I'm becoming pretty familiar with how
various sets and standards work. Along with what I don't like.

For instance. I like how the GNOME set provides naming for specific
optical media. DVDs, +/_Rs and the like. It allows me to add specific
touches for the different disks. As an artist/designer/user, I like that. :)

But, even though icon-naming-utils takes care of these with symlinks I
feel these should be FreeDesktop standards. Where: gnome-dev-disc-cdr
would be: media-optical-cdr in FreeDesktop.

Now, pushing for that change upstream aside, do you guys think creating
media-optical-cdr (with symlinks) now instead of gnome-dev-disc-cdr
would be best, or just stick with specific icons for
gnome-dev-disc-cdr and change later?

I'm hoping Andreas can chime in here. (I'll also contact dobey as well)

Can you give me more details on this? I've not heard of this and the
SystemInfo page doesn't mention SVG support at all.

Because of the connection between wiki.u.c and launchpad it will

Roadmap is now Release Schedule and point to the generic page that
forwards to always the current.

FAQ gone.

Documentation, Kyudo and CommunityThemesGuidlines now all under
Guidlines, to be massaged into shape.

ReportingPage and PageTemplate are now hidden, as I switched to an
explicit link list with short explanations, instead of the previous
/bla /blu.

WarningTheme and Powder moved to Specificatios, formerly Specs. Old,
obsolete specs deleted.

GutsyIconsReview and NewHumanTesting moved to Incoming pages.

Thorsten,

Wow, as it turns out I have some experience with MoinMoin. I created and
maintain a sandbox MoinMoin wiki titled proWiki located here.

http://www.projwiki.com/index.cgi/ImpressionGtkTheme

The Fedora community was having trouble maintaining their wiki back when
it was MoinMoin 1.5.8 and decided to switch to MediaWiki. However, much
of the design work of their current wiki was done with MoinMoin.

IMO there is a lot of potential in MoinMoin. I don't know the best
approach, but the Fedora community used mockups to brain storm their
ideas.

Perhaps starting with a new Artwork page.

Call for testing of notify-osd under UNR

2009-04-02 Thread Loïc Minier
Hi

We're pondering inclusion of notify-osd in UNR by default (replacing
notification-daemon), but we lack data on how well the non-composited
 version of notify-osd behaves.

Anybody running jaunty UNR is welcome to try to install notify-osd and
see how well the bubbles behave / show up. We're particularly
interested in testing the largest number of different bubbles on as
 many hardware configuration as possible.

We're interested in your reports of success or failure mentionning
particular apps on particular hardware on:

[ubuntu-tr] iki farklı soru: 64 bit ve shell 'e erişimi olmayan kullanıcı oluşturmak

2009-04-02 Thread ahmed yasar
Merhaba,

4GB bellekli sistemime Ubuntu 9.04 beta kurdum (32 bit). Ancak malum
sebeplerden dolayı ön tanımlı kernel ile RAM'in tamamını kullanamadım.
Bu kernel'in

İkinci olarak;

vsftpd ftp sunucu kurdum. ftp kullanıcılara güvenlik sebebiyle shell
erişimi vermek istemiyorum Bu nedenle ftp kullanıcılarını
oluştururken;

adduser --shell /usr/sbin/nologin --home /home/userftp1 userftp1

etkin hale gelecektir. login'i iptal ettiğinizde de sftp çalışmaya devam
eder.

Kolay gelsin.

I hope the panel on the top is still there. Right-click on the panel
at the top, and select New-panel. A new gnome-panel should appear.
Drag the panel to whatever position you prefer (side or bottom). Right
click on the new panel and select Add to Panel, an option window
will appear, from that select Window List and click Add.
This should do the job. Hope it helps.

Re: [ubuntu-in] Partitioning Drive for i Linux

2009-04-02 Thread Ritesh Sinha
Jag,

While there is no hard and fast rule for partitioning (apart from having a
separate swap partition), in my opinion it's best to separate /home /boot
and /. This allows for easy movement between upgrades.

Sample layout

Boot: Ext2 : 500 MB (this should be MORE than enough, unless you intend to
install many kernels. ext2 filesystem since journaling isn't required)
Swap: Thumb rule is twice of RAM. I've gotten away with less (I have about 2
GB of RAM).
/ : 40 GB
/home (ext3): the rest of the space

or alternatively
/home :20 GB
Rest can be split into categories like
/music
/movies
based on the size of your music and movie collections

Regards,

Ritesh

Tricky question. People would swear by a file system as ideal. I have
read that ext4 has zero tolerance for powerouts and much greater chance
of it being corrupted in such circumstances, so it is out of question
 for people like me.

I have been using ext4 on arch linux since a few days now. I have had
a couple of unclean shutdowns but no corruptions till now. In fact I
had two distros getting corrupt due to unclean shutdown on the same
drive but smart gives a clean chit the disk. Still, how does ext4
fares will be too early to judge on my install.

None till date, but that is no guarantee that it can't happen in
future. If you are in a situation that you need to rebuild tree, its
the most scariest.

Best thing is fastest recovery from unclean shutdowns, journal replays
are really fast on reiserfs. You can experience the speed from the
moment you issue mkreiserfs on an 100GB partition, its over within a
few seconds.

Yeah! Heard about it. Am safe since I run Ubuntu on laptop which has a
power-backup from battery. Still X-crash and many other unusual freezes
do make me do a hard-reboot(sometimes).

Another awesome thing is the speed of file operations. I took me 2 secs
just to delete a 700MB file. I had a valve folder which contains CS,
which it deleted instantly. I was thinking that this operation would
take ages like in XP/Vista... :)

[ubuntu-in] importing aspell-hi dictionary into another computer

2009-04-02 Thread Dinbandhu
Hello All,
I have spent months working on both my aspell-hi personalized dictionary as
well as the aspell-hi system-wide dictionary, and now have a fairly extensive
dictionary whose vocabulary is specialized for the writing which I do. I am now
helping a colleague to set up the same aspell Hindi spell-checker in his
computer, and need to install these Hindi dictionaries of mine for use with
aspell in his computer. But it seems that the aspell structure has changed a
bit since I got mine set up. It used to be that the system-wide Hindi
dictionary was a file called hi.cwl. One could edit it by decompressing the
file, opening it in gedit, then saving the changes and recompressing the file
into the hi.cwl format. But now I find that when one installs aspell-hi in a
computer today, it is kept in a different format -- hi.cwl.gz. This it seems is
basically another compression format. So it would seem logical enough that if I
want to put my hi.cwl into his computer, then I can just compress it into the
hi.cwl.gz format and install it in his computer. Should this work?

I ask, because I have tried this in one person's computer, and the hindi
spellchecker stopped working. So I am a bit scared to try it again.

Another related question: I notice that after installing aspell-hi in my
colleague's computer, there are no .aspell.hi.prepl and .aspell.hi.pws files in
his home folder. These used to be the names of the personalized dictionaries.
Is it now done in a different way? Because I would like to install my
.aspell.hi.prepl and .aspell.hi.pws files in his computer as well.

Thanks!

Swarup

triste.

 Dianne,

Those are backup files. To get to them in Nautilus, browse to the folder
 they're in (for example /home/Dianne/Documents/ ) and press Ctrl + H. This
shows hidden files and folders. From there, you can just delete the
files, then press ctrl + H again to hide hidden files and folders. If you
don't hide them again, you'll find a lot of extra (configuration) folders in
 your Home directory.

 Hope that helps!

For a bit more explanation, they can be created if you edit a file -
GEdit saves a backup by default, as does vi/vim. Other editors
probably do the same.

You can definitely turn it off in vim (but I can't recall exactly what
incantation you need to write in .vimrc), and probably in GEdit too.
Ah, yes - in GEdit's preferences, choose the 'Editor' tab and turn off
the option to make a backup copy.

The other option is to try using Ctrl+H in the file dialog where you
can see the extra files. Maybe this will hide the backup files and let
you just select the ones you want. This depends a bit on exactly how
the program is written though...

Re: here are three things I found after installing ubuntu that need looking in to

2009-04-02 Thread Francisco Javier Dorado Martinez (tiflolinux)
Hi to all

The problem with password causing Orca to doesn't respond is the
gksu/gksudo utilities they are killers :-)

I usually kill them after entering my password and everything goes well.
Although I know that kiling this I am in security problem, but I prefer
this more than don't access to apps. So I have created a short bash
script that simply killall gksu and gksudo
and attached it to a keybinding.
enter a password for gksu after pressing enter key I press my shortcut
key and no problem with a11y and at's.

I don't know exactly what is the problem, why gksu and gksudo apps are
blocking assistive technologies, I think that is related to keyboard
grab, or IPC techniques but something might be done in gksu to avoid
this

Regards and go on on Ubuntu a11y, every six months it rocks more, thanks
Luke!

I have a question about lists in movie player

2009-04-02 Thread mike
Hi, I am liking Linux more everyday. Today I tried the online lookup again in
movie player. I was surprised to find what I was looking for. Using down arrow
I could pick videos. But Orca doesn't announce the titles when using the down
arrow key alone. I found by holding ctrl and pressing f1 it would read the
title for me. Is there any way to get Orca to read the titles as you press the
down arrow key?

Should mousing over (but not clicking) audio files on the desktop cause them to play invisibly?

2009-04-02 Thread Scott Ritchie
So, by default Gnome has a feature that I've seen confuse at least a few
users - if you leave the mouse over top an audio file it will
automatically start playing the file, even if it's already open or you
have other music playing at the same time.

Upstream, however, seems reluctant to change it:

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=537905
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/237975

I'm convinced this goes way against user expectations. From the bug
comments:

 1) What value do audio previews serve? Most users will test a file by
 opening it.
 2) If we do decide to continue with the preview, we need to make it very clear
that an audio preview is playing and how to stop it (eg with a tooltip)
 3) There is potential for harm here (playing music without being asked to
during class/meeting, etc). This is especially true with audio files on the
 desktop.
 4) We should never play an audio file with preview if it's already playing
somewhere else. A common case of this is when I right click a file, tell it
 to
open (or even queue) in my media player but leave my mouse nearby. The file
will start playing, and also start previewing, leading to a very confusing
 double-sound.

I've seen this affect several people now, and I'm quite convinced that the
 icon
change is absolutely not enough. It's a small, hard to notice icon, it
 doesn't
appear as soon as the audio starts, and most importantly it's not clear
 whether
it means I will start playing sound in a second or click here to play
sound. Many users would expect the latter, since they're about to open an
audio file and clicking is what normally makes it play sound.

At the very least, we should notify the user with some text somewhere, such as
 by using libnotify.

So, would it be appropriate to disable this in Jaunty?

Thanks,
Scott Ritchie

A me too from me. That's always struck me as a crazy feature. I

Just want to add a voice opposed to disabling it. I find it a very

I don't think so.

The impression that I get is that the problem comes from the fact that
it's happening on the desktop, and not subfolders. It's appropriate in
subfolders; you're looking at files, you're purposely landing the
mouse on those files, the icon changes and the audio preview starts.

The desktop however, the mouse just lands where it lands. If there
happens to be some audio underneath it, the audio preview might start
before you manage to move the mouse again. This has happened to me a
few times and every time it spooks me. Futhermore, the desktop often
has a different background or texture, so it might take longer to
notice the audio-preview icon there.

If you don't like the audio preview feature at all, just disable it
and it won't bother you again (until the next reinstall...) That's the
point that Andre expressed in the bug. But the audio preview feature
shouldn't be disruptive in the general case and IMO having it on the
desktop is rather disruptive.

Cosimo Cecchi wrote a patch that refactored the audio preview feature
a bit. Once that lands, it should be fairly easy to disable on the
desktop.

Try adding just VLC. Maximus does sub-string matching so that should be

I really would try that ;-) That is probably the biggest problem with
backups - people find they can't restore. This could be for a variety
of reasons (media, setup ...). You should be able to restore to some
other area than the original. You will also have been through it before
when you come to the heart flutter situation of really needing to do it ;-)

Just to add another option into the mix. I've used Amanda
(http://www.amanda.org/) for years. It is trickier to set up and all
command line stuff. I use an external USB disk. Prior to that I used
tapes.

The backup does selected partitions from all machines on the network.
I've pulled out individual files from backup and unfortunately had to
recover an entire partition.

One nice thing is that the backup format is basically a tarball with
some info on the front. You can skip passed that initial info to have a
normal tarball. With some backup solutions (mainly priority) you end
up with some format where you need the original software.

Some of you might already know me from this list as an Ubuntu
translator and coordinator of the Catalan team [3]. I am also actively
involved in upstream translations [4], especially in GNOME, Debian,
the Translation Project and OpenOffice, which will certainly assist me
in one of our main objectives: strengthening and fostering the

As Steve Langasek announced some days ago [5], time is tight for

there are quite a few other languages with the occasional error.

Fixed, again. Wondering for how long.

When is the next round of validation checks, if any?

Ok, you need to install linux-headers-2.6.28-3-rt, and then run the command I

i've installed this package, done the command again, here is the terminal :

a new boot with fglrx activated done the same trouble with X.

So a get a new boot under generic kernel, desactivate flgrx driver, free

I've get a usable desktop. video resolution is ok, refreshing rate seems

the loaded kernel was an rt one, as the command tell it :

so, i load qjackctl and try rt with my two sound card.

- if i have rt on with internal sound card (bad one) hw0 - jackd crash
- if i have rt on with external sound card USB (good one) hw1 - jackd crash

and said this :

i've done the same test, but without checking the rt checkbox in qjackctl.

same result for hw1 on usb, the sound card never work...and the

for hw0, a surprising result, with 512 frame/periode, 26,3ms for latency
(so a bad one), the card is working not too bas, with few xruns. I've
tried at 256 frames/periodes with ardour reading a wav file, and
hydrogen playing a drumkit, recorded in ardour, it's working with few
xruns. below 256, too many xruns.

for conclusion, the internal sound card is working a little bit better
than in hardy studio rt, but the usb one is not working at all.

Jaunty RT testing

2009-04-02 Thread Brian David
I've been reading this list in the archives for a while now, and decided to
join up so I could pitch in with the Jaunty Beta testing. Still fairly new
to Linux, and to using e-mail lists for that matter, so keep that in mind as
you read this.

First up, here's my hardware. It's a fairly old desktop that I use for
testing:

Motherboard: Asrock K7VT4A
Processor: AMD Sempron 2400+
Video: ATI Radeon 9600+
Memory: 2 GB
Audio Interface: Presonus Firepod

I grabbed the Beta on the day of its release, and the good news is that the
install ran smoothly and I had the RT kernel up and running after not too
much hassle. I should say that I was using a regular Jaunty CD with the
UbuntuStudio audio and graphics meta-packages installed, and not the actual
UbuntuStudio CD.

My Firepod has always worked well with Linux, which I'm thankful for. As
for performance, the freebob driver in Jack is essentially useless on this
computer, too many X-runs (although it seems to work great on my MacBook
booted into Hardy, which is my production machine). However, the firewire
driver (FFADO, right?) works wonderfully. I spent an hour or so messing
around with a simple three-track live recording, and there was not a single
X-run (JACK settings were Frame/Periods: 256, Sample Rate: 44100
Periods/Buffer: 3).

BUT, I ran into problems while trying to do my final mixdowns from Ardour.
To be exact, I couldn't mix down a full track without JACK shutting down. I
tried easing the JACK settings back a little, but still no luck. The tracks
would mixdown, but JACK would immediately then crash, and I'd have to
restart the Firepod and JACK to get things going again. It's hard to tell
if this is due to the age of the computer, or the RT kernel.

Also, I ran into problems with some of the plug-ins in Ardour. I found that
I could not adjust many of the settings (for instance, the frequency setting
in a parametric EQ I was using could not be changed at all). I remember
reading on the Ardour website that there might be some problems with the
packages in the Ubuntu repos. So I re-installed Ardour using a .deb I
downloaded from getdeb.net, and the problem disappeared. Is this something
your package managers can fix?

The final HUGE glaring bug is that the RT kernel will not shut down or
restart. When I try, it just freezes, and I need to shutdown the computer
manually. This is not a problem with the generic kernel.

Overall, everything is working suprisingly well for a beta. I'm really
looking forward to using this kernel on my MacBook.

Re: [Tradutores-Ubuntu] [Guls] Reflexiós sobre o nosos futuro

2009-04-02 Thread Felipe Gil Castiñeira
Ola a t...@s,

unha man.

-- o Software Ceibe existiu antes, e existirá despois. Ten
claro de cara á sociedade xa viña de antes do goberno do bipartito:

 chegar a posturas comuns.

(what you see is what you get), que você pode editar sem ver o código

(arquivo, novo, documento html) e o Amaya.

realizei o teste do phpinfo() (http://localhost/info.php), e apareceu
 a

 da
informação que poderias utilizar no teu curso:
Cartilha de segurança para a Internet: http://cartilha.cert.br/
  Vídeos interessantes sobre segurança:
  http://www.antispam.br/videos/(sóhttp://www.antispam.br/videos/%28s%C3%B3
 http://www.antispam.br/videos/%28s%C3%B3

   http://www.telecentro.niteroi.rj.gov.br/

BrOffice.org, Internet, Firefox e muitos outros aplicativos:
   http://www.ufpa.br/dicas/

Publiquei algumas dicas (cortar figuras, páginas em branco e outros)
  sobre
BrOffice.org no meu blog: http://francival.wordpress.com/ (talvez
 possa
   aproveitar alguma coisa).

  passar
   a
Detalhe: a maioria

Boa sorte no curso e inté +

(what you see is what you get), que você pode editar sem ver o código

 (arquivo, novo, documento html)

[Ubuntu-BR] Dispositivos USB

2009-04-02 Thread Daniel Alves
Ele detecta normal e lista o nome exato do dispositivo.

Danilo,

fininho...

 Bom dia à todos,

Instalei o Apache + MySql + PHP através do

 # apitude install apache2 mysql-server php5

realizei o teste do phpinfo() (http://localhost/info.php), e apareceu
 a

HTML...). O conceito em questão é: no Kompozer, você estará escrevendo a página
do mesmo jeito que o navegador exibirá. No Gedit, vc está escrevendo o
código-fonte.
conceito :)
Apenas para fechar:
WYSIWYG = What You See Is What You Get (o que você vê, é o que você tem)

MilhoXP
I like to kompoze :)
