[ubuntu-in] audio problem in ubuntu
hey guys thanks 4 all ur support. i am new to ubuntu and i have installed ubuntu karmic in my desktop which has P4 2.4 Ghz processor and 1 GB RAM. I have VLC installed in ubuntu. Whenever i play any mp3 file or any movie in vlc or any other player it plays fine for the first 2-3 mins and then the audio device stops and then my computer becomes very slow and finally it hangs.then i have to restart the machine all over again.why is it happening and what is the solution. i have dual boot - windows xp on 1 hdd and ubuntu on another hdd.i have audoi files on both hdd. saurav _ Windows 7: Simplify what you do everyday. it isnt possible to diagnose the problem with such minimal information. Firstly, run a memtest on ur ram and secondly, post some logs available in ur /var/logs directory so that we can get more information. [ubuntu-in] URGENT HELP NEEDED
Hey Guys this is an emergency My father had got a new lenovo laptop from his office with original win xp proffessional.i wanted to test ubuntu on it keeping the windows and all its settings.so i made a partition of 100 gb using partition manager to install ubuntu there.but while loading ubuntu instead of selecting installing with windows i selected select partition manually and i selected the 100gb partition that i made before. Now ubuntu had been sucessfully installed but when i selected windodw xp from the boot option it is not opening.the 100 gb partition where the windows was previously instaled is been made inactive. If you need a quick fix to get windows xp back, you can always boot from any xp cd, go to the recovery console and type fixboot and fixmbr. Mind you, this will get rid of GRUB from the master boot record. It will not affect the installed Ubuntu OS. You can later reinstall GRUB and experiment more. In the future, you might want to create a backup first. Also try this,
Boot from a live CD and go to partition editor. Turn the windows drive active.
Or else if you can do ths, install a pirated windows on a new small
(say 5 GB Partition) go to disk management by right clicking My
Computer, click the inactive partion and make it active.
Then boot into existing ubuntu, and delete the new partiton and join
it with any existing partition.
The second method is a bit long, but should do the trick. For the
first method, I don't know if the ubuntu partition manager would be
able to activate the drive and how to do that. But for second will
definitely activate your drive.
What I suggest is this:
First try the first method and if for some reason you are not able to
do it then try the second method.

Saurav, I think right now saving the important documents is more important
than saving operating system. Are you able to mount the windows partition(s)
in ubuntu? If so, copy the data first into a removable media and then try to
save the O.S.

Dear All, I just bought a set of DVDs of complete repository of ubuntu 8.04 Hardy from an online vendor(Zyxware). Now I want to use them to set up a local repository similar to apt-mirror without downloading the whole stuff. I googled and found many guides which are either about creating a repository on local machine or downloading and configuring a local mirror. http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...postcount=243 The above link is very close to my need but I don't know how to turn the same into a local NETWORK mirror so that other machines on my LAN can use the repository. You basically install apt-cacher on the server machine, use the import.plscript (described on page 2 of the HOWTO), import all the packages from your repository dvds, change the sources.list file on all the client machines, and you should be good to go. The added advantage of this is that when any machine on the network gets a new package or updates an existing package, the same will be available to all other machines on the network locally, without having to fetch it from the internet. Je suis d'accord avec le fait que c'est trippant déboguer linux, mais il y a une catégorie de user qui ne veut pas s'en occuper. Pour l'instant, plusieur bug bien documenter sous linux sont trop ardu à régler pour le commun des mortels. Je pence surtout au bug d'interaction entre le logiciel et le matériel (wifi, carte video, bluettooth). Par contre, je sais bien que les constructeur travaille en concert avec microsoft. Linux a de moins en moins de bug (si on peu le dire comme sa) et les regression de ce systeme sont rares meme qu'en général l'évolution du systeme ce fait exponnentielement. Côté interface utilisateur, je ne pense pas que les distributions linux ont de quoi envier à Windows. Le problème, comme je le mentionnais plus tôt, c'est que les gens sont habitués à Windows, et qu'ils ont tendance à demander la même chose, même si l'interface Gnome ou KDE me semble plus user friendly. Il faut réaliser qu'il y a un temps d'adaptation à tout nouveau logiciel, et que d'adapter l'interface pour qu'elle ressemble à celle du produit communément utilisé (en incluant ses défaut), n'est pas la meilleure stratégie. L'idée de mettre une assistance interactive dans nos distributions est intéressante. J'ajouterai que de faire de la publicité, des coups médiatiques, aiderait aussi, tout comme, bien sûr, ce que nous faisons, à savoir aider les nouveaux usagers dans leurs premiers pas. Déboguer Windows est pour moi bien plus frustrant que de déboguer un système linux où tout est plus clair et mieux documenté... Non, les utilisateurs trouvent Windows plus facile d'usage simplement parce que c'est le système qu'ils connaissent depuis le plus longtemps. C'est le même problème que l'on voit pour l'adoption d'OpenOffice. Ce dernier fait la job, mais comme la plupart des gens est habituée à utiliser MS Office, et qu'on n'est pas prêt à faire l'effort d'un nouvel apprentissage... Autrement dit, il nous faut continuer à parler de Linux et surtout de faire des démos... C'est vrai ce que tu dis, Gilbert. Cependant Linux est de plus en plus reconnu et discuté en milieu scolaire, chez le personnel enseignant surtout, mais chez plus d'un parent aussi. Par exemple, à l'école où je travaille, une école d'immersion française à Winnipeg, et où Windows est de mise, je dirais que le personnel utilise à la maison, et ceci n'est qu'une grossière estimation, Windows dans une proportion de 60% des enseignants, Linux, 30% (Ubuntu surtout et, pour au moins deux enseignantes, Linux Mint) et Mac, 10%. Chez les parents la proportion d'utilisateurs de Windows est plus élevée, c'est un fait, mais c'est un fait aussi que Linux n'est plus une entité inconnue ou dédaignée. On en parle de plus en plus, on l'essaie aussi (grâce aux cd live), ce qui était quasiment impensable il y a seulement 5 ans. Ceci pour dire que bien qu'exposés à Microsoft, il y a un cercle de plus en plus important d'enfants qui sont exposés aussi bien à Linux et, dans une moindre mesure (à cause du prix, pas à cause de la performance), à Mac, et je ne doute pas que c'est un cercle qui va aller grandissant.Bon an mal an, en dépit de tout ce qu'on en dit, Linux gagne du terrain. A PPA on Launchpad is the best place to look for this sort of thing. A quick search finds https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mozilla-daily/+archive/ppa, containing a thunderbird-3.0 package which you should be able to install alongside TB 2. Windows 7 and Ubuntu
Hi. My work notebook is a HP Pavilion dv7 that came with MS Windows Vista. The first thing I did when I got it home, of course, was to set-up Ubuntu to dual boot (there are a number of applications we use that require MS Windows to function - DEEWR's UES Smart Client for example - so I couldn't go for a straight Ubuntu install). Work have since received a heap of MS Windows 7 upgrade disks and all of our new notebooks, mine included, need to be upgraded. My question, therefore, is 'how do I upgrade to MS Windows 7 and then restore Grub so that I can continue to use my current Ubuntu installation?'. Hi, I think displaying English is better, and you may remember about bug 476269, which makes Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, and English variant translations aren't shown during Karmic installation, users are looking at English text during installation. Having no translations is a damning thing, but nothing shown is even worse I think. My immediate assumption is that this is a good idea; it's pretty ugly and disheartening to see a presentation in a foreign language while installing an operating system that should be (and usually is!) in one's native language. On the other hand, lots of people do speak English anyway, etc... For me personally, this is uncharted territory. I don't know much about the psychology of installing software that defaults to a language other than my own, since I have never experienced that, so I thought it would be best to ask around. What are your thoughts? Would you rather see a slideshow in English, contrary to the other stuff, or nothing at all? (Of course, for most languages this needn't be a concern since the translation community is amazing, but just pretend you speak Klingon for a few minutes). Qapla' ! Yes, it is, and was right after my desktop Ubuntu installation. I replaced the 9.10 with with the one I took from 9.04. To be true, I begin to think there was something within my database directory /home/database (into which my.cnf pointed to) that prevented normal installation and running, although the only difference was debian flag file. In my directory it had 5.0 in name (debian-5.0.flag), while in the database folder created after using default my.cnf the file had 5.1 (debian-5.1.flag). Since mysql-common is installed as a requirement to ubuntu-desktop, I had some problems with locating the source of problems. I believe this is a known issue for Windows XP VM's. Do you have hardware virtualization? Many older CPU's do not have support for virtualization and this is known to cause Windows XP x32 VM's to run the processing power all the way up. Recent experience with the network leads me to believe that this is, at least in part, a Windows Browser-Master problem. Windows is known to have trouble (some say it's broken) with browsing peer-to-peer networks. One computer in the network takes the role of being a browser master. There is a defined hierarchy of who does it - generally the machine that is on longest but has the more recent operating system. The browser-master is the machine that stores a list of host names and their ip addresses, enabling browsing of the network. I think that Linux machines on a Windows network rely on the Browser-Master for browsing. Setting up a Windows computer as a broswser-master is inaccurately and incompletely documented and supported by Microsoft, who really you to have a Windows server. My experience that the process of a browser election can be completely confused if other machines are on the network, leading to unreliable browsing with both Windows and Linux. In particular it may be that a non-Windows DHCP server inhibits Windows machines from being browser-masters. Browsing problems on our network seem to have disappeared since we've installed an SME server (www.contribs.org) AS A DOMAIN/WORKGROUP CONTROLLER. En déconnectant et rebranchant l'USB du clavier tout est reparti normalement (la souris est connectée au clavier). C'était au cours de la rédaction d'un courriel, le clignotant de texte était toujours actif. Je n'ai pas compris pourquoi. Essayez CTRL+ ALT +F4 Pour passer en mode terminal. Si ça ne marche pas le hard reboot s'impose. = Une fois logé en terminal, voila quelques commandes utiles (éventuellement avec sudo): halt : pour arretéer la machine proprement reboot : pour rebooter Et enfin CTRL + ALT + F7 pour revenir en mode graphique Notez que ces combinanison de touches fonctionnent tout le temps. [Bug 498443] [NEW] kernel panic with high network traffic
Public bug reported: My media server locks and needs to be hard reset after high network traffic, this is usually triggered by rtorrent or another machine connected by sshfs. This was previously occuring on 9.04 with a wired connection so I had downgraded to 8.10 and everything was fine. I recently upgraded to 9.10 with a wireless connection (broadcom) hoping this issue had gone away, but it is still occuring. I switched to a terminal and ran rtorrent and was able to get a picture of the kernel message, it is attached (sorry for the blurriness but it should still be readable).
